The First Settlement in North AmericaIt is very difficult to say just when colonization began. The first hundred years after Christopher Columbus’s journey of discovery in 1492 did not produce any settlement on the North America continent but rather some Spanish trading posts further south, a great interest in gold and adventure, and some colorful crimes in which the English had their part. John Cabot, originally from Genoa but a citizen of Venice, was established as a trader in Bristol, England, when he made a journey in 1497. But his ship, the Matthew, with its crew of eighteen, did no more than see an island (probably off the New England coast) and return home. He and his son made further voyages across the north Atlantic which enabled the English crown to claim a “legal” title to North America. But for a long time afterwards the Europeans’ interest in America was mainly confined to the Spanish activities further south. The first beginning of permanent settlement in North America were nearly a hundred years after Columbus’s first voyage. The Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh claimed the whole of North America for England, calling it Virginia. In 1585 he sent a small group of people who landed in Roanoke Island, but they stayed only for a year and then went back to England with another expedition, led by Drake, in 1587. A second group who landed in 1587 had all disappeared when a further expedition arrived in 1590.The first permanent settlement in North America was in 1670. English capitalists founded two Virginia companies, a southern one based in London and a northern one based in Bristol. It was decided to give the name New England to the northern area. The first settlers in Virginia were little more than wage slaves to the company. Allwere men and the experiment was not very successful. Many died. Those who survived lived in miserable conditions. By 1619 the colony had only a thousand people.1.We know for sure that colonization began at the end of the 15th century.( )A. RightB. WrongC. Not mentioned2. behaviours.Winston Churchill noted:"We shape our buildings and then our buildings shape us."Buildings and the city environment have been found to influence our general emotion and wellbeing.Architects(建筑师)have often been focused on their imagination and design above how a space may influence its residents(居住者).However, there are a number of architects moving in a new direction, interested in creating people﹣centred building designs.Research carried out by Colin Ellard of the University of Waterloo,Canada, has found that people are often strongly affected by building plex (复杂的)and interesting appearance design influences people much more positively than simple design. Many studies have shown the value of green space and woodland in a city environment and how they can help to reduce the stress that comes with city life. The visual (视觉的)complexity of green spaces plays into Ellard's theory that the human brain prefers complex and lively environment.Another study in Iceland in 2023 found that streets which vary because of their architecture were the most emotionally pleasant. This all leads to the idea that we want variation in our environments.Another research has shown that growing up in an city environment can double a person's chance of developing problems such as worry. It shows that the stress of city life is something that needs to be considered and new spaces should be designed with stress management and wellness in mind.It would be wrong to say style isn't important. We want things which look fantastic as well as work practically, but things can go wrong and influence us negatively if style becomes more important than the building itself.Architects who want to show their skills must consider the purpose of the building. For example, schools should look bright with open spaces, green areas and comfortable corners for reading and learning. No one wants a building to create bad feelings. If we can create spaces which appeal to residents,as well as achieving their purpose, then the end result is much more satisfying and much more likely to stand the test of time. Our cities are set to grow year on year with no end in sight,so we should make sure new development s are built more with people in mind.(1)What do you know about architects from the passage?A.They are running out of creativity.B.Their stress needs to be considered.C.They have to take tests from time to time.D.Their design starts to focus on human feelings.(2)The writer probably agrees that .A.there should be more buildings in green colour in citiesB.visually complex design is more likely to create stressC.it is a must to consider the building itself and its styleD.buildings with simple appearance bring us comfort(3)The words"appeal to"in the last paragraph are closest in meaning to .A.pleaseB.houseC.shapeD.upset(4)What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A.To criticize architects for their great mistakes.B.To call for the people﹣centred design of buildings.C.To suggest how to make architectures emotionally pleasant.D.To stress the importance of architectures to a city environment.15.A 16﹣year﹣old boy named Li Tao lived in a small town in China. One day, while Li Tao was doing his science homework,he came up with a great idea.He worked out a way to make a new type of power supply(供应)for his town, which had a problem with its electricity supply. To make his idea come true,Li Tao began to experiment at home.He was so confident that nothing could stop him from inventing. He made and took apart many models.Even though he faced lots of challenges and failures,he didn't give up.He fixed his mistakes, changed his plans, and kept working hard. After two years of hard work,he finally succeeded. He made a small device(设备)that could change wind power into electrical power successfully. This was a new, environmentally﹣friendly way for his town's power problem.News about Li Tao's invention quickly spread around his school and town, and everyone really took pride in his achievement. The group of science﹣technology of the town decided to help him improve the invention. He was invited to give a speech to encourage other teenagers to learn more about science and be more creative in the Science and Technology Meeting. His story encourages teenagers that being young is not a barrier(阻碍)to achieve their dreams.Even a common teenager can do something amazing!(1)What was the problem of the town where Li Tao lived?A.Water pollution.B.Experiment device testing.C.Electricity supply.D.Wind power lightning protection.(2)When Li Tao faced challenges and failures,he .A.encouraged other teenagers to join himB.fixed his mistakes and kept working hardC.gave a speech and learnt more about scienceD.asked the group of science﹣technology for help(3)How did people feel after knowing Li Tao's invention?A.Excited.B.Proud.C.Confident.D.Surprised.16.We rely on our memory for sharing stories with friends or learning from our past experiences.Yet evidence shows that our memory isn't as consistent as we'd like to believe. There are countless reasons why tiny mistakes might happen each time we recall past events. And whenever these mistakes happen, they can have long﹣term effects on how we'll recall that memory in the future.Take storytelling for example. When we describe our memories to other people,we might ask ourselves whether it's important to get the facts straight,or whether we only want to make the listener laugh. And we might change the story's details depending on the listener's attitudes. It isn't only the message that changes, but sometimes it's also the memory itself. This is known as the"audience﹣tuning effect",showing us how our memories can change automatically over time,as a product of how, when, and why we access them.In fact, sometimes simply the act of repeating a memory can be exactly what makes it easy to change. This is known as"retrieval﹣enhanced suggestibility".In a typical study of this effect, participants watched a short film, then took a memory test a few days later. But during the days between watching the film and taking the final test, two other things happened.First, half of the participants took a practice memory test.Second, all of the participants were given a description of the film to read, which contained some false details.Participants who took a practice memory test shortly before reading the false information were more likely to reproduce this false information inthe final memory test. Why might this be?One theory is that repeating our memories of past events can temporarily make those memories malleable. In other words, retrieving (找回)a memory might be a bit like taking ice﹣cream out of the freezer and leaving it in direct sunlight for a while.By the time our memory goes back into the freezer,it might have naturally become a little misshapen, especially if someone has influenced it purposely in the meantime. These findings lead us to wonder how much our most treasured memories have changed since the very first time we remembered them.Remembering is an act of storytelling, after all.And our memories are only ever as reliable as the most recent story we told ourselves.(1)The writer takes storytelling for example to prove that .A.it is impossible to change the listener's attitudesB.it is important to describe our memories directlyC.we can make other people laugh to y telling storiesD.we may change our memories according to the listener(2)What do you know about memory from the passage?A.Our memories can change our personalities.B.Our memories can correct mistakes on their own.C.We can take a practice memory test to strengthen our memories.D.We can reproduce the information while repeating our memories.(3)The word"malleable"in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to .A.reasonableB.valuableC.changeableD.controllable17.Clean electricity is the power of the future, but engineers are facing a big challenge. How can we store electricity to be used at times when the wind is not blowing and the sun is not shining? In some cases, the answer will be batteries;but in other cases,it could come from a variety of different solutions—starting with gravity.Gravity is the most abundant source of power on Earth. It's always been everywhere since the beginning of time.Nobody knew about it until around 1700,when Isaac Newton saw an apple fall from a tree in hisgarden.Newton asked himself the question:"Why did that apple fall to the ground?" And he soon worked out the answer.Everything will fall to the ground if it can do so,because there is a massive force that pulls things towards the centre of the earth.Newton decided to call this force "gravity",a word that then just meant "weight".Engineers have used gravity as a source of power for centuries, long before Newton first explained it.In particular, they used gravity to move water from one place to another to irrigate(灌溉)field s and bring water to cities. They knew that water would flow downhill, but never uphill,so they built structures to use the force of gravity most effectively. In 1907,engineers in Switzerland first used gravity for a new purpose:to store energy. They pumped(用泵抽送)water up a hill, where they stored it in a lake. Then when they needed more electricity, they let the water come back down the hill, driving electric turbines(涡轮机)as it fell. The idea was just so simple, and it is now used in many parts of the world. However, the problem is that "pumped storage" hydro schemes(抽水蓄能水电方案)can't be built just anywhere,as they need lots of water and big hills or mountains. Some experts believe that gravity systems are the cheapest way to store electricity.Gravity﹣stored electricity is maybe half the price of battery﹣stored electricity, but even so it is not cheap. In order to make gravity more effective,we would need to increase its force—and that,of course,is quite impossible.Yet gravity is not the only way of storing energy, and engineers are working on systems that store it using water pressure or compressed air...and even sand!Storage is one of the big scientific challenges of our time,as storage is the essential partner of wind power and solar power. We need clean electricity 24 hours a day,not just when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.(1)The word "abundant" in Paragraph 2 probably means .A.expensiveB.environmentalC.famousD.plentiful(2)From the passage,we can know that .A.gravity systems are the cheapest way to store electricityB."pumped storage" hydro schemes can be built on small hillsC.engineers in Switzerland first stored energy by using gravity creativelyD.experts have already made gravity more effective by increasing its force(3)Why does the author write this passage?A.To tell the story of finding gravity.B.To show the importance of gravity.C.To call on people to use clean electricity.D.To introduce a good way to store electricity.四.书面表达(共1小题)18.某英文网站正在开展以"突破自我,我拼过"为主题的征文活动。

And yet, I was made very angry when a colleague pinched (捏)my waist and screamed, “Rosa, you've lost weight. You look great In The truth is that I was tired and not taking care of myself. I decided to start a proper weight-loss program. The first to go would be road rage (路怒).I am in far less control of this weight than any other. Every time something gets in my path, I fly off the handle. I need to lose the road rage, and fast! No, no more speed. Instead, I now repeat the words:"I am not in a hurry. " This year, I will drive safely, allowing "stupid" to happen all aroundme. From that, I hope to gain patience.Next is guilt. When guilt drives my conscience to do better, it's functional. But when it presents itself as an internal dialogue that goes nowhere, it's useless. This year, I want to stop feeling guilty for not keeping a cleaner house, for spending time away from my children to be with friends, for not attending every party because I’d rather be at home, or for watching TV when I should be reading. My image and performance are not at the front of anyone else’s mind but my own. From this, I hope to gain freedom to be myself. The last is fear. Fear has held me back. Fear of failure has prevented me from being a writer. Fear of embarrassment has prevented me from giving an opinion. Fear of rejection has stopped me from aiming higher in my life. Fear of regret has led me into situations that made me uncomfortable. If I can lose any one of these fears, I stand to gain experience. So, if I can lose the rage, shake off some guilt, and take fear off my plate, I stand to gain patience, freedom, and experience. Pound for pound I have not lost a thing but I will be much lighter. Next time, I hope my colleague looks me in the eye to see my glow instead of pinching part of me that has nothing to do with how great I really look.24.What does the underlined part “fly off the handle” in paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Pick up speed.B. Drive off.C. Feel quite nervous.D. Become very angry.25.What has made the author feel guilty before?A.Attending too many parties.B.Reading much with her children.C.Wasting her time in watching TV.D.Spending little time with her friends.26.How has fear affected the author?A.It has prevented her achieving her goals.B.It has stopped her furthering her education.C.It has made it difficult for her to make friends.D.It has caused her to quit her dream of being a teacher.27.What does the author expect to gain from her weight-loss program?A.Respect.B. Independence.C. Optimism.D. Tolerance.CSix months before she died, my grandmother moved into an old people's home and I visited her there. The room was clean and warm, and the care assistants were kind and cheerful. A general knowledge quiz show was on the television, and the only other sound was snoring (打呼噜).People moved only when they needed to be helped to the bathroom. It was disappointing. Grandmother talked a lot about how much she missed seeing her grandchildren, but I knew from my sister that they hated going to visit her there. So I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people's homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary - combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on.The advantages are huge for everyone concerned. The children are happy, because they get a lot more individual attention. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. And the staff are happy because they see an improvement in the physical and psychological health of the residents and have an army of assistants to help with the children.Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young in an increasing number of countries. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for ageing relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same - increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children, and more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. Ifs a major problem in many societies. That's why intergenerational programs, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world.28.What does the underlined word "residents" in paragraph 2 probably refer to?A.Old people.B. School teachers.C. Assistants.D. Staff.29.How were the old people at the home the author's grandmother was in?A.They felt lonely and useless.B.They weren't allowed to be visited.C.They weren't looked after properly.D.They lived in a dirty and uncomfortable room.30.What does the author think is a major problem in many societies today?A.The extended family is broken down.B.There isn't much room for grandparents.C.Working parents have no time to care for their children.D.There isn't much contact between the old and the young.31.What will be probably talked about later in the passage?A.Advice on how to communicate with children.B.Plans for setting up more homes for old people,C.Examples of successful intergenerational programs.D.Ways of teaching entertainment skills to old people.DMicroplastic pollution is increasing greatly around the globe, according to a study of plastic particles (微粒)carried in the air.People are already known to breathe, drink and eat microplastics, and research suggests that pollution levels will continue to rise rapidly. The researchers said that breathing in these particles can be harmful to lung tissue and lead to serious diseases.Professor Natalie Mahowald, at Cornell University in the US and part of the research team, said, " But maybe we could solve this before it becomes a huge problem, if we manage our plastics better, before they accumulate in the environment and move around everywhere."The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Acadenry of Sciences, examined airborne (空气传播的)microplastics, which have been far less studied than plastics in oceans and rivers. The team gathered more than 300 samples of airborne microplastics from 11 s ites across the western US. These were the basis for atmospheric modeling that estimated the contribution from different sources (来源),and it was the first such study to do so.They found that roads were the main factor (因素)in the western US, linked to about 85% of the microplastics in the air. These are likely to include particles from tiresand brake pads on vehicles, and plastics from litter that had been broken down. The researchers extended their modeling work to a global level and this suggested that while roads are also likely to be the major driver of airborne plastics in Europe, South America and Australia, plastic particles blown up from fields may be a much bigger factor in Africa and Asia.Professor Andreas Stohl of the University of Vienna's Faculty of Earth Sciences said, “The study confirms the global-scale (全球规模的)nature of microplastic transport in the atmosphere and does a good job in highlighting highly relevant and concerning possibilities, but more measurement data is needed to get a better idea of the sources.”32.What can be known about microplastic pollution from this text?A.The particles can do great harm to our lungs.B.Airborne microplastics have been widely studied.C.It has become the most pressing environmental problem.D.There is less plastic in the air than in oceans and rivers.33.What did the researchers find out about microplastic pollution?A.Its results differ across many continents.B.Africa and Asia are suffering most from it.C.Roads and fields are largely to blame for it.D.It spreads fast from one continent to another.34.What should the researchers do next according to Professor Andreas Stohl?A.To predict the potential damage of microplastics.B.To understand the nature of microplastic pollution.C.To improve the method of collecting samples of microplastics.D.To collect more data to understand the sources of microplastics.35.What can be the best title for this text?A.Effects of microplastics on human healthB.Microplastic pollution on the global scaleC.Possible solutions to microplastic pollutionD.Microplastic pollution rising quickly in the air第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

The First Settlement in North AmericaIt is very difficult to say just when colonization began. The first hundred y ears after Christopher Columbus’s journey of discovery in 1492 did not produce any settlement on the North America continent but rather some Spanish trading posts further south, a great interest in gold and adventure, and some colorful crimes in which the English had their part. But for a long time afterwardsthe Europeans’ interest in America was ma inly confined to theSpanish activities further south. The first beginning of permanent settlement in North Americawere nearly a hundred years after Columbus’s first voyage. TheEnglishman Sir Walter Raleigh claimed the whole of NorthAmerica for England, calling it Virginia. In 1585 he sent asmall group of people who landed in Roanoke Island, but theystayed only for a year and then went back to England with another expedition, led by Drake, in 1587. The Operation of International AirlinesInternational airlines have rediscovered the business traveler, the man or woman who regularly jets from country to country as part of the job. This does not necessarily mean that airlines ever abandoned their business travelers. Instead, companies like Lufthansa and Swissair would right argue that they have always catered best for the executive class passengers. But many airlines could be accused of concentrating too heavily in the recent past on attracting passengers by volume, often at the expense of the regular traveler. Too often, they have seemed geared for quantity rather than quality.Operating a major airline is essentially a matter of finding the right mix of passengers. The airlines need to fill up the back end of their wide-bodied jets with low fare passengers, without forgetting that the front end should be filled with people who pay substantially more for their tickets. It is no coincidence that the two major airline bankruptcies were among the companies specializing in cheap flights. But low fares require consistently full aircraft to make flights economically viable, and in the recent recession the volume of traffic has not grown. Equally the large number of airlines jostling for the available passengers has created a huge excess of capacity. The net result of excess capacity and cut-throat competition driving down fares had been to push some airlines into collapse and leave many others hovering on the brink.Against this grim background, it is no surprise that airlines are turning increasingly towards the business travelers to improve their rates of return. They have invested much time and effort to establish exactly what the executive demands for sitting apart from the tourists.High on the list of priorities is punctuality; an executive’s time is money. In-flight service is another area where the airlines are jostling for the executive’s attention. The free drinks and headsets and better food are all part of the lure.Another development has been the accent of seating arrangements. Regular travelers have become well versed in the debate about seat pitch—the amount of room between each passenger. And first-class passengers are now offered sleeperette seats, which, for long journeys, make it possible to snatch a proper night’s sleep. Sleeperettes have proved so popular that they will soon become universal in the front end of most aircraft. The airlines are also trying to improve things on the ground. Executive lounges are commonplace and intended to make the inevitable waiting between flights a little more bearable. Luggage handing is being improved. Regrettably, there is little the airlines can do to speed up the boring immigration and Customs process, which manages to upset and frustrate passengers of all classes in every continent.Although it is the airlines’ intention to attract executive passengers from their rivals, the airlines themselves would nonetheless like to change one bad habit of this kind of traveler—the expensive habit of booking a flight and then failing to turn up. The practice id particularly widespread in Europe, where businessmen frequently book return journeys home one on several flights.11.
