One of the simplest and most inexpensive ways is to place an “ad” (advertisement or announcement) in the local newspaper. Sometimes they place ads in “journals” (academic magazines) for professionals in a “field” (an area or type of work).Many companies also use the power of the Internet for recruitment. Companies often post “job descriptions” (a summary of what the job is and what the company is looking for in a new employee) on their website. Other companies use employment websites specifically for job announcements to “post” (upload something to the Internet for others to read) their job announcements. “Jobseekers” (people who are looking for a new job) can read job announcements on those websites and then “apply” (send in the required papers to be considered for a job) for those jobs.Companies that have a lot of money and need to hire for “top” (very important) positions often use “executive search firms,” which are also known informally as “headhunters.” These companies call people who are working in similar jobs at other companies and try to get them interested in coming to the company that is “hiring” (looking for a new employee). I’m looking for a new job myself.[end of dialogue]The conversation begins with the woman who works for the employment agency asking Kurt, “Tell me why you’d like to sign up with our employment agency” – tell me why you want to use our agency – our company – to help you find a job. Kurt says, “Well, right now I’m working in a dead end job.” A “dead end job” is a job that doesn’t have a lot of opportunities; it doesn’t have a very good future. A “dead end” is when you have a street that stops, that you can’t go any farther on. Here, it’s used to refer to a job that doesn’t have any great importance, pay, or responsibilities in the future; it’s not going to lead you to anything else.Kurt says, “There are no opportunities for advancement.” “Advancement,” here, means moving up in the company; it’s the same as a “promotion,” to get a better job in the same company. Kurt says, “I’m already at the top of the pay scale, so there’s no chance of another pay raise.” The “pay scale” is a system that a business or organization uses to determine how much each job is going to be worth, how much they’re going to pay their employees. If an employee is there for two years, they may get this salary; if they’re in the company for five years, they get a different salary. So that’s what a pay scale is; it’s a set of, we would call them, “steps” that you go through as you are in the company longer, as you have more experience, or perhaps as you increase your education while at the job. A “pay raise” is an increase in the amount of money you receive for working, an increase in your salary.The agency employee says, “Okay, I’d like to find out a little more about your employment history.” Your “employment history” is a list or a description of the jobs that you have had in the past. If you look at my employment history, it began working at a car wash, cleaning cars when I was 15 years old. When I was 16, I worked at a nursing home, cleaning dishes in the kitchen for three or four months. Then, I worked in a store, selling things for almost seven years, and so on and so forth. Eventually, I ended up being a podcaster – it’s a long story!ESL Podcast 400 – Working in a Dead End JobKurt says, in describing his last job, it “was a mind-numbing position.” “Mind-numbing,” here, means boring, very uninteresting. Not interesting at all – it was mind-numbing. To “numb” (numb) something means that you lose your feeling. For example, if you sit on your legs the wrong way your foot could go, we would say, to sleep. It would go numb; you couldn’t feel anything in your foot.So, this is a mind-numbing – a brain-numbing, if you will – position. He says, “I did menial work all day and I burned out in six months.” “Menial” (menial) is similar to mind-numbing; it’s boring, it’s not important, it’s uninteresting. Usually, “menial” is a very simple physical task, such as washing the windows, or washing cars, or washing dishes – these are menial jobs. To “burn out” means that you can no longer work at that job; you are exhausted, mentally and perhaps physically. When you do a job for a long time, you may get sick of it; it becomes boring to you. “Burn” has several different meanings; take a look at our Learning Guide for some additional explanations.The agency employee then asks Kurt, “What about the job you had before that?” – what was the previous job you had? Kurt says, “The problem with that job was that there was a glass ceiling.” A “glass ceiling” (ceiling) is the idea that people, especially women, who work in an organization can never become the managers, the vice presidents, or the presidents. They’re looking up as if through a ceiling made of glass at all of those men in the higher positions. The “ceiling” is, as you probably know, the top of a room; the bottom is called the “floor.”So, “glass ceiling” is usually used to talk about women who are unable to advance or get promotions in an organization, but Kurt says that he was a victim of a glass ceiling. He says, “They would never promote a person like me.” To “promote” someone means to give them a better job, something with more pay and more responsibility.Then, the employment agency employee asks Kurt, “Well, what about the job before that one?” Kurt says, “I only took that job as a steppingstone to the next one, but it turned out to be a stumbling block instead.” Couple of expressions here: first “steppingstone,” in this case, is something that helps you get to another level – to a higher level, especially at work. So, you start washing dishes, and you say, “Well, that’s a steppingstone for cleaning the tables in the dining room; that’s what I really want to do.” A “steppingstone” is the first, or one of the first jobs that you have that you hope will lead you to get a promotion. A “stumbling block” is something that makes it difficult or impossible to do something. To “stumble” means to fall; “stumbling block,” then, would be something in your path – in your way that would make you fall. Here, Kurt isESL Podcast 400 – Working in a Dead End Job talking about how the job he had was a stumbling block; it prevented him from advancing.He says, “My boss didn’t like me and wouldn’t give me a good reference.” A “reference,” when we talk about a job, is an evaluation, usually a letter that someone will write about an employee, often for an employee that’s looking for another job outside of the company – a different job. “Reference” has a couple of different meanings in English however, so take a look at the Learning Guide so you know how to use it correctly.The agency employee says, “Okay, so you were not happy with any of the jobs you’ve had.” Kurt says, “ No, they weren’t right for me (they weren’t good for me). I don’t want to be trapped in a dead end job.” To be “trapped” means not to have any choices, not to have any options, to be forced to do something. Kurt doesn’t want to be trapped in a dead end job. He says, “I want something that will give me personal satisfaction.” “Personal satisfaction” is a feeling of happiness, feeling good about what you are doing.The employee says, “I see” – I understand. Then she asks Kurt, “Have you considered working at an employment agency? Then lock the screws according to the torque rates shown in the table.In case of crash the turret may slip and turn around the reference pin. In this way any subsequent re-alignment will be facilitated.3.3 - Assembling of the toolholder discBefore assembling the toolholder disc the coolant outlet shown on page 9 must be properly positioned.Before locking the disc fixing screws it's necessary to adjust its angular position by checking the height of the tool position.When the disc is correctly positioned, lock the screws (according to the torque rates shown in the table) and put the reference pins between the toolholder disc and the turret.The pins could be removed to allow the disc movement in case of crash and re-utilized for an eventual further re-alignment.Fig. 2ScrewsTurret size BSV-N 320Type M12 - 12.9Tightening torque[Nm]115Nr.16Reference pinsNr.2 - ø16Fig. 4425426417328325420324323418408424419418422421B2A424+ α− α41741942342242113.4 - Coolant operation (Fig. 4)The path for the coolant is designed in such a way that it exits always and only in line with the actual cutting tool it is necessary to set the disc interconnecting valve in the position required.The coolant pipe coming from the pump must be connected to the "A" or the "B" inlet on the turret housing.Throught an internal path the coolant passes from the housing to the (408) manifold ring that, by means of an anular groove brings it to the exit points 1 and 2.Normally, one of this outlet points is closed by a plug (418), while the other contains the coolant valve (417).The coolant valve (417) slides on the rear surface of ring (323), which rotates as one piece with the turret ring and the disc by delivering the coolant to the working tool area.The coolant valve (417) can be positioned in any of the two positions provided by changing it with plug (418).The angular position of the coolant outlet can be modified by an amount of ± α as follows:—Loosen screws (325) and turn ring (323). When the desired position has been reached, tighten screws (325) again.—Loosen screws (425) and turn collector (408) for moving the coolant valve (417) into the position of the hole at the outleton ring (323).Then tighten screws (425) again.It is furthermore possible to replace quickly the coolant valve (417) for coolant without any need to disassemble the disc after having loosened screws (424) and removed plug (421).Coolant pressure:—continuous supply: max 7 bar;—by pressure cut-off during turret rotation: max 14 bar.3.5 - Electrical connections (Fig. 5)The electric connection must be carried out according to diagram on page 11. The maximum lag time betweenthe signal of the sensor and the stopping of the motor mustnever axceed the R2 value shown in the table. At this pointthe machine can be started, in order to go on working.•The solenoid (4) is to be de-energized after the expirationof the T2 lag time starting from the moment when thesensor (6) signal is read.N.B.: The T1, T2, R1, R2, times must be understood asreal times execution of the controls and the signals checkedon the terminal board of the turret.For an accurate detection and measurement of the abovementioned values it is advisable to use adeguateinstrumentation such as an oscilloscope with memory andcurrent sensing devices.(*) See tab. 2 sheet 12 ( Cycle ).4 -SERVICE OPERATIONS4.1 - Replacement and adjustment of locking control switch (Fig. 8 - 9)This switch is operated by the part (141) in correspondance of the locking position.The turret is locked when the part (141) is moved to the top dead point or at least at a max. distance of 0.5 mm from it.The switch point of the proximity switch, to be used to stop the motor, must be adjusted with an advance to ensure that the motor is stopped in the zone of the locked turret.This advance is provided the counteract the R2 lag time or stated values (see table page 12).The switch point, size "B", is shown in the fig. 9 page 15.4.1.a - Replacement of the switch (Fig. 8)Remove the cover (146) to reach the proximity switch (105). To replace the switch disconnect the wires from the terminal board, unscrew the screw (321) of the block (306) and remove the switch.Once replaced and re-connected the new switch adjust the position as follows:—With the screw (321) unscrewed, introduce a 1 ÷ 1,2 mm spacer (A) between the switch and the part (141).—Push the switch against the spacer (A) (as shown on the figure) then lock in place with the screw (321).—Remove the spacer (A).Fig. 81421184.1.b- Adjusting procedure (Fig. 8 - 9)a)With the turret correctly lock part ( (141) on the Nr. 3 position) energize the low voltage circuit only, do not apply mains voltage at this stage.b)Loosen the two screws locking the support (306) and move it in the direction indicated by the arrow (4) until the switch is de-energized (verify this condition on the relevant Led of the electrical interface equipment).Move the support (306) forwards (direction indicated by the arrow (5) ) the exactly, find the point where the switch is re-energized. Starting from this position move the support (306) forward again (direction indicated by the arrow (5) ) of a distance corresponding to the B value . To better check the displacement (B), it is advisable to use a dail as indicated on figure 9.Note:The "top position" can be slightly different changing the position (scattering "n" in figure 9)For the right adjustment please refer to the most external top position.Fig. 954.2 - Replacement and timing of the angular position transmitter (Fig. 8)To replace this element remove the cover (146); the angular position transmitter is the component (116). Disconnect the wires from the terminal board, unloose the two screws and remove the two fixing pieces (118). At this point it is possible to remove it from the turret. For the re-assembly proceed according to a reverse sequence, but before locking it, set the timing operations as follows:—Lock the turret at any position.—Set an approximate positioning by rotating the unit to get corresponding position code (check by means of a voltmeter or on the machine PLC).—Perform an accurate adjustment by rotating the unit until the strobe signal passes from 1 to 0; mark the position of the angular position transmitter against its support then rotate in the opposite direction until the strobe signal passes again from 1 to0 and mark this new position.In such a way it is possible to determine the area where the strobe signal is 1; the width of this area will be 20°.Rotate 10° backwards the angular position transmitter so that the reference mark is halfway the angle found with the previously described procedure and tighten the screws of the fixing pieces (118).4.3 - Indexing control adjustment and replacement (Fig. 10)To reach the indexing control first remove the solenoid assy as shown on page 17.The switch (105) is locked by means of a block (106).To replace the switch disconnect the wires from the terminal board, loosen the cable clamp (145), unscrew the two screws (457) and remove the switch together with the block, simultaneously pushing the wire through the cable clamps (145).Once replaced the switch and before connecting the wires to the terminal board, provide for the adjustment of this position as follows:—Lock the screw (457).—Once locked the screw (457/B) proceed as follows:- take a 0,9 ÷ 1,1 mm thick spacer.- introduce the spacer (A) between the pin (158) and the switch.- push the switch against the space (as shown by the figure) then lock it with the screw (457/B).- remove the spacer, connect the wires, tighten the cable clamp and re-assemble the solenoid.4.4 - Brake and motor replacement (Fig. E)The motor and the brake form a single assy which can be reached after removal the rear cover (146) of the turret. For disassembling the unit, it is necessary to remove from the terminal board the cable belonging to the brake and to the motor. For this purpose loosen screw (147) and withdraw the motor with its shaft. Loosen screw (229) and remove brake (228) from its support (350). Finally pull off bearing (223) and oil-seal (220).The motor unit will be supplied complete with brake (228), bearing (223), oil-seal (220) and spacer (354) have already been adjusted in order to obtain an air gap of 0,2 ± 0,05 mm on the brake, without any need of further adjustment. However, it is advisable to check the set value of the air gap.4.5 - Solenoid pre-indexer (Fig. 11)4.5.a - Solenoid pre-indexerThe solenoid pre-indexer is the component shown by the number 4 on the sequential cycle and is the unit which, lifts or lowers the pre-indexer pin, pre-sets the turret for its rotation (beginning of cycle) or for shut-down (end of rotation).To check this assy proceed as follows:•Remove the rear cover of the turret (146), disconnect the solenoid wires from the terminal board, loosen the cable clamp and push the cable inwards.•Unscrew the screws (178) and remove the spacers (177).•Remove the cap (193) after having unscrewed the screws (190) then remove the solenoid (157) (see fig. 11 and fig. 12).4.5.b - Checks to be performed on the pinManually push the pin (158) and let it be pushed back by the springs to verify that it runs smoontly.In case of problems, completely remove the pin and check the springs (180) for correct condition and verify that the flats coupling of the cam (128) is not damaged.4.6 - Shock absorber (Fig. 11)The shock absorber (173) as be designed to absorb the shocks caused by the turret pivoting part when stopping it by means of the pin (158).As it can be seen on the drawing, the shaft (181) is axially positioned by means of two shock absorbers (173) allowing a cushioned stopping of the disc.4.7 -The turret's restart-up after an accidental or emergency shut-downThis operation is required in case the turret stops during rotation due to lack of electricity or sequential cycle mismanegement. This turret-up after an accidental or emergency shut-down must be performed in the same rotation direction which it had at the moment of shut-down.4.7.a)Operate one of the turret's positioning cycles. In the case that the controller doesn't accept the positioning command, because the point of departure is wrong and the turret is not locked, see point (4.7.b)4.7.b)In order to return to the normal turret positioning, it is necessary to have at one's disposal a set of manual commands (push-button type) to manually start up the individual cycle phase for each component in order to operate the solenoid, motor and brake in an indipendent manner, accordimg to the opportune sequences. To reset the turret's normal condition, follow these steps:—De-energize the brake (3).—Energize the indexing electromagnet (4).—Operate the motor's rotation in order to turn the turret in the same direction that it turned at the moment of interruption.Cut off the motor's feed as soon as the indexing pin stops the rotation.—Reverse the motor's rotation in order to lock the turret, cutting of the feed as soon as you have the locking microswitch signal.—Energize the brake (3).—De-energize the electromagnet (4).—The turret, at this point, is normally indexed and locked in position and ready to go in an automatic cycle.4.7.c)If the re-timing — as described in point (4.7.a) and (4.7.b) — doesn't work because the necessary manual commands are not available or because the rotation direction at the time of shut-down wasn't known, the following manual re-timing procedure be carried out:—Desconnect the turret's electrical connections. This operation serves to electrically isolate the turret with a resultant de-energizing of indexing solenoid and brake.—Remove the solenoid cover (193).—Remove the rear cover (146).—Push by hand down wards the part (192) and contemporally, by means of a key as stated in Fig. 12 rotate the motor.—Rotate the motor shaft until the part (192) will push the pin (158) inside the slot relevant to an indexing position and keep always pushed the part (192).—For locking the turret, rotate the motor shaft (during this step keep part (192) pushed), into the direction where less resistance is felt (rotation into the opposite direction is impossible).—If the rotation direction is the right one you can see the ring (141) page 14 is moving towards the outside signalling that the turret is going to be locked. Right locking is got when the ring (141) is in the top position (before starting to recover); in this situation the proximity switch (105) must be energized.—Now the turret is ready to start again in the automatic cycle.4.8 - Operation checks to be carried out in case of accidental collisionThis inconvenience presents two different conditions:•The collision between the disc and the machine occurs while the disc is locked.•While the disc is unlocked. The most frequent condition is the collision while the disc is locked and, normally, the following operations are to be performed for re-starting the machine:—Loosen the screws locking the disc.—Introduce the suitable setting pin supplied with the machine.—Tighten the screws and remove the setting pin. Repeat the above sequence also for the screws locking the turret to the saddle.Having completed the above operations, the turret usually is aligned again and ready to be operated.Should the collision occur while the disc is unlocked, or in case of malfunction after the re-alignment operations previously described, the mechanical parts are to be checked in conformity with the procedure illustred in the next chapter.Fig. 121901931921464.9 - Instructions for the checking of the mechanical partsThis check is to be performed in the following cases:—Accidental collision with the lathe, when after retiming the turret does not work correctly.—Misfunctions which cannot be eliminated after checking the motor, the brake, the encoder, the turret timing and the max.lag times of the electrical equipment of the machine.4.9.a-Disassembly instructions (see Fig. A-B)—Remove the toolholder disc from the turret.—Remove the ring and seal complete (408) from the turret and check the condition of the seal (123).—Remove the rear cover of the turret (146).—Remove the encoder (116).—Remove the proximity switch (105) and its support (306).—Remove the motor support (350).—Remove the ring nut (436).—Remove the screws (101) and the relevant pins.—At this point, even with the turret locked, the whole mechanical group can be removed through the front of the turret.—The various components of the mechanical assy can be dismantled further after removing the locking nut (310).4.9.b-Checks to be performed on the mechanical elements.—Check the conditions of the bearing (317).—Check that the three roller and pins (130) are not damaged.—Check that the surface of the cam (128) is not damaged.—Check that all sliding surfaces are in good condition and that all gaskets are undamaged.4.9.c-Assembly instructions—Carefully clean and wash the various components before reassembly. The assembly must be carried out in the reverse sequence of the above disassembly instructions and the turret on the mechanical assy must be unlocked.—Before locking the collar (310) check the preload of the springs, proceeding as follows (Fig. 13): Assembly the spacer (309)Screw the collar (310) until it touches the springs (133).Then tighten the collar and makesure that the springs are compressed in according with the X-Y values indicated in the table of Fig. 13, if necessary modify the spacer (309).—After assembly check, with the turret unlocked, the 0,1 mm backlash on the main shaft (311); in the opposite case modify the ring thichness (136) to get the right clearance.Fig. 13LENGHT AFTER PREOLADINGUNLOADED LENGHTBSV-N 32010,80,9Turret size Normall valueX [mm]X-Y [mm]+ 0,10313165314N.B.: After prolungated working time it is possible to inspect a lower value; min. acceptable value is 0,10 mm.4.9.d - Check of the right mechanic locking of turretAfter re-assembling of the turret or in case you suspect the toolholder disc is not mechanically locked(also if the electrical indexing cycle is properly operating).A rod (313) allows to inspect the right shifting of the locking inside parts and the consequent application of the power given by the cup-springs (Fig. 13).Shifting remark must be executed in the following way:—Position a dial gauge as per Fig. 14.—Unlock the turret manually driving the motor as shown at page 18 - 19.—Push the rod (313) towards the inside up to the touching.—Reset the dial gauge.—Manually get the locking and check the rod has got the shifting stated in Fig. 14.If the checked vaule "Z" is not corrisponding to the stated one the reasons could be the following ones:•Wrong assembly of inside parts.•Excessive wearing of the rollers (130) or of the cam (128) or of the toothing (111-112).•Presence of dirt between the contact surfaces.4.10 - LubricationThe mechanical part of the turret is supplied with permanent lubrication and therefore it does not require periodical refillings or lubricant changes.The lubricant is to be changed only in case of complete disassembly of the turret.The lubricant is to be filled before assembling the solenoid (157) and the pin (158) pouring it through the pin seat.4.10.a - Recommended capacity of lubricant used4.10.b - Recommended lubricantFLUID GREASECENTOPLEX GLP 500 - KLüBER LUBRICATIONAustralia Klüber LubricationA Division of Freudenberg (Australia) Pty. For that reason, these dog breeds are often used as police dogs, which are also known as “K9s,” meaning “canines” (dogs or dog-like animals).A “public order enforcement dog” is used to help police officers “chase” (run after) “suspects” (people whom the police believe have committed a crime). These dogs can also help to protect the police officer by “attacking” (physically fighting against) a criminal, if necessary. These are usually large, strong, and intelligent dogs.A “tracking dog” is used to “track” (find where someone has gone and follow that direction) criminals or people who have become lost. The dog might be given a small piece of the person’s clothing and then be told to track that person. The police officers follow the dog until the person is found.An “illicit substances dog” is used to find drugs or “explosive devices” (bombs). These dogs are often seen at airports where they “sniff” (smell something by breathing in loudly through one’s nose) suitcases. If the dog “detects” (finds something), it points to the suitcase until the police officer comes over and opens it.Finally, a “cadaver dog” is used to find “cadavers” (dead bodies) through its sense of smell. With the right training, some dogs can even smell cadavers that are underwater.Police dogs are “valued” (respected and honored) members of the “police force”(a group of police officers). [end of dialogue]Giles begins by saying to Julia, “Do you really think we’ll be able to renovate this place and turn it into a restaurant?” “To renovate” means to improve a room or an entire building by usually rebuilding parts of it, expanding it, perhaps putting different decoration – different colors, that sort of thing. “To renovate” means to make new, in some ways, the room or the building. Giles wants to take a place, some place they own or are renting, and turn it into a restaurant, meaning make it into a restaurant. Maybe it was a store before, now it would be something different.Julia says, “It’s not so bad.” The place is not too bad is what she’s saying. She says, “I know it smells a little stale and musty in here, but all we need to do is air it out.” “Stale” is a way of describing a smell that is not fresh, that is old; something that smells used could be described as stale. “Musty” (musty) is something that smells like it’s slightly wet; it’s a very bad smell, usually because there hasn’t been enough air circulation in a particular area. If you live in the northern part of the United States and your house has a basement, sometimes in the basement it can get very moist, very damp, meaning there’s water there, and that can lead to a musty smell. “To air (something) out” means to open windows or to do something to make the air move around the particular space so it dries out, smells better, gets rid of the bad smells. You might open a window, for example, to air something out.Giles says, “Air it out? This place needs a lot more than an airing out.” Notice he uses “airing out” as a noun, from the verb “to air (something) out.” He says, “The kitchen smells putrid.” “Putrid” (putrid) is the smell of something that is dead, something that is perhaps decaying, meaning that, for example, it’s been sitting there for a long time and so it starts to come apart. A human body, if it were left in a room – a dead body, that is – would start to decay. It would start to change colors; it would start to smell bad. Well, that bad smell we could describe as being putrid. It doesn’t just mean it’s a dead body; there are other things that can smell putrid. “Putrid” is perhaps one on the most negative words you can use to describe the way that something smells. Giles says, “I wonder what died in there.” He’s joking; he doesn’t mean something actually is dead in there – although it’s possible!Julia says, “There is a faint smell of something nasty in there, but I don’t think it permeates through the rest of the building, do you?” A “faint (faint) smell” is aESL Podcast 543 – Describing Different Smellsvery slight, very small – so small you can almost not notice it. “Faint” has a lot of different meanings in English in addition to this one. Take a look at the Learning Guide for some more explanations. “Nasty” (nasty) is something that is very unpleasant; we might even say it’s disgusting or it’s gross. It’s a very negative way to describe something. You could say, “It was a nasty fight.” The two people were fighting, they were yelling at each other, they were shouting, using bad language. That would be a nasty fight. Here, “nasty” means that the smell is very bad. Julia says there’s a faint smell something nasty in there, but she doesn’t think it permeates through the rest of the building. “To permeate” (permeate) means to be present in every part of something – in every part of, in this case, the building. If a nasty smell permeates the building, we mean you can smell it everywhere in the building.Giles says that he doesn’t think the nasty smell permeates through the rest of the building, but there are different nasty smells in other parts of the building. He then says, “Oh! There’s a really strong burnt, smoky smell in this corner. Hold your breath!” A “burnt (burnt) smell” would be something that smells after it has been damaged by fire. “Smoky,” similarly, means that something has been burning, or something has been producing smoke, and the smoke is now the smell that you get when you go close to that object. So if there’s a fire in the room, and there was a wooden chair, after the fire whatever is left of the chair might have a burnt, smoky smell. Giles says to Julia, “Hold your breath!” “To hold your breath” means not to breathe, usually because you don’t want to smell something. You want to avoid a bad smell, hold your breath. It means not to breathe.Julia says, “This is a restaurant. I’m sure a thorough cleaning will make all the difference.” So I guess they’re in a building that had a restaurant, but it’s an old one and it needs cleaning up. Giles says, “That might be true for the kitchen, but what will you do in the dining room (the place where people eat, or dine)? An entire truckload of scented candles or bottles of perfume couldn’t mask those foul smells. This place just stinks, from top to bottom!” Giles says that an entire truckload of scented candles or bottles of perfume couldn’t mask those fouls smells. A “truckload,” here, would be the amount that you could put into a truck; more generally, it just means a large amount of something. So he’s saying that even if we had a large number of scented candles – “scented” means with a pleasant smell. So you buy a candle, and you light it, and it gives off a pleasant smell. That would be a scented candle. I personally don’t like scented candles, because I don’t think the smell is very pleasant at all usually. Giles also mentions bottles of perfume. “Perfume” is a liquid with a strong, pleasant smell. It’s used primarily by women. When men use perfume, they don’t call it perfume, they typically call it “cologne,” just so they don’t seem like they’re women I guess.ESL Podcast 543 – Describing Different SmellsI don’t know; it’s all perfume basically! “To mask” (mask) means to cover something, to make it difficult or impossible to see or smell or hear something. In this case, make it difficult to smell something. “Foul” (foul) is like the word “putrid,” something that is very unpleasant, something that is very bad. “Foul,” however, has some other meanings; take a look at the Learning Guide for those. So going back, Giles says, “An entire truckload of scented candles or bottles of perfume couldn’t mask those foul smells. This place just stinks, from top to bottom!” “To stink” means to have a very bad smell. You would never want to say to your boss or to your girlfriend, “Boy, you really stink!” That is not a nice thing to say. More generally, “stink” means to be very bad at something. So we could say, “Ah, that baseball player stinks.” “David Beckham stinks,” for example. I’m not saying he actually stinks; I don’t watch soccer so I don’t really know! But when Giles says, “This place just stinks,” he means it literally stinks; it smells “from top to bottom,” meaning the entire building – the entire room.Julia says, “All right, I’ll look for another building, but this place is cheap and within our budget,” meaning we can afford it; we have enough money for what we planned. Giles says, “Yes, but if I had to work here, I’d first have to lose my sense of smell!” Your sense of smell is your ability to smell. We talk about the five senses: smell, see, hear, taste, and touch. Follow the steps below to verify board operation.Caution: Do not turn on the power supply until all connections are completed.1) Verify that all jumpers are in their default positions asshown in Table 1.2) Preset the power supply, PS to 14V. Turn off the PS.3) Preset the electronic loads, EL to 3A. Turn off the EL.4) Connect the positive terminal of EL to OUT; connectthe negative terminal of EL to GND4.5) Connect the positive terminal of PS to SUP; connectthe negative terminal of PS to GND.6) Connect the positive terminal of VM to OUT; connectthe negative terminal of VM to GND2.7) Turn on the power supply.8) Verify that the voltmeter on VOUT1 measures ap-proximately 11.5V.9) Enable the electronic loads, EL.10) Verify that the voltmeter on VOUT1 measures ap-proximately 11.5V.Detailed DescriptionThe MAX25240 EV kit provides a fully developed and proven layout for evaluating all variants of the MAX25240 family of current-mode-controlled buck converter ICs. Each converter accepts input supply voltages as high as 36V and input supply transients up to 40V.Operation ModesThe IC can operate in two modes, forced-PWM or skip mode. Skip mode offers improved efficiency over PWM during light-load conditions. When FSYNC is pulled low, the device operates in skip mode for light loads, and in PWM mode for larger loads. When FSYNC is pulled high, the device is forced to operate in PWM across all load conditions.Switching Frequency and External SynchronizationThe FSYNC pin can be used to synchronize the switching frequency of the IC to an external source by applying an external clock signal. The device is forced to operate in PWM when FSYNC is connected to a clock source.Output Voltage Monitoring (PGOOD)The EV kit provides output test points (PGOOD) to moni-tor the status of the buck-boost output voltage on OUT. PGOOD is high impedance when the output voltage rises above its 95% (typ) of regulation voltage. PGOOD pulls low when the respective output voltage drops below 93.5% (typ) of its nominal regulated voltage.To obtain logic signals, pull PGOOD up to VCC by install-ing the shunts on jumpers on JU_.Setting the Output Voltage in Buck ConvertersThe EV kit comes assembled to provide a fixed 11.5V output regulation on OUT. To externally adjust the voltage at OUT, remove R fb and place appropriate resistors in positions Ry and Rx according to the following equation:VOUT1R7R81VFB=−where VFB = 0.8V (typ) and R8 is between 10kΩ and50kΩ.Evaluating Other VariantsThe MAX25240EVKIT# comes installed with the 11.5V/400kHz variant (MAX25240AFFF/VY+)Analog Devices offers additional variations including those that operate at higher switching frequency of 2MHz for smaller component size. Figure 2 shows the schematic of the EV AL-ADuM3190EBZ circuit which can be used to test the accuracy of the ADuM3190 and perform other tests. The EV AL-ADuM3190EBZ is a 4-layer PC Board, complete with ground and power layers as shown in the Evaluation Board Layout section.EVAL-ADUM3190EBZ SCHEMATICFigure 2 is the ADuM3190 schematic of the EV AL-ADuM3190EBZ evaluation board. U1 is the ADuM3190 in the center of the board and Pin 1 is the top-left pad with respect to the notch in the silkscreen’s package outline. C 1, C2, C3 and C4 are ceramic 0603 1µF bypass capacitors required for proper bypassing of the ADuM3190 internal 3V regulators on both sides of part. 10µF 0603 ceramic capacitors are added to the VDD1 & VDD2 connections to provide additional bypassing to to the board in case long wires are used from power supplies to the evaluation board.Test point connectors are provided for most of the important connections to pins of the ADuM3190. The following sections describe connections to make to power the EV AL-ADuM3190EBZ and make performance tests.LEFT SIDE POWER CONNECTIONSConnect the Left-side external power supply (+3V to 20V) to P1 (labeled “VDD2”) and its return to P2 (labeled “GND2”).RIGHT SIDE POWER CONNECTIONSConnect the Right Side external power supply (+3V to 20V) to P9 (labeled “VDD 2”) and its return to P10 (labeled “GND 2”).ACCURACY TEST CONNECTIONSFigure 2 EV AL-ADuM3190EBZ Schematic has a blue line outlining the EAOUT accuracy circuit. The capacitor C7 2.2nF together with R8 680 ohm and R7 0 ohm resistors form an integrator circuit to close the loop from the “-IN” input to the “EAOUT ” output. A 1% accurate internal reference voltage of 1.225V at “REFOUT” is connected to the non -inverting Op Amp input “+IN” through a 0 ohm resistor R9, providing the reference for the Accuracy Test Circuit. See Figure 3ADuM3190 Block Diagram or the ADuM3190 datasheet for more information about the operation of the ADuM3190. Note, as stated in Figure 2, “add a wire between GND1 and GND2 for EAOUT and EAOUT2 accuracy tests”. This connection is needed since the accuracy tests connect a 680 ohm resistor across the isolation barrier and creates a current path between the two isolated areas, so a ground return is needed for the accuracy tests. The accuracy of the EAOUT output will be within +/-1% of the reference voltage specified value of 1.225V . Next, the EAOUT2 accuracy test can be performed by removing the R7 0 ohm resistor and placing a 0 ohm resistor at R5, completing the EAOUT2 circuit. Since the EAOUT2 circuit has a high gain and uses the same internal reference voltage to connect to the “–IN ” input of the Op Amp, the accuracy of the EAOUT2 output will also be within +/-1% of the reference voltage specified value of 1.225V .For tests other than the accuracy tests, the 680 ohm resistor connections should be made open by removing R5 and R7 0 ohm resistors, and the external wire connection made between GND1 and GND2 should be removed. The Igaro D2 is designed to work only with STVZO 3W dynamo hubs (all Shimano, SON and SP dynamo hub models are supported). 2.4W "LED" dynamo hubs provide less power and are less suited to USB charging. Using bottle or rim driven dynamos may damage the Igaro D2 and such usage is not covered under warranty.POWER LEAD: Ensure the power lead is immobile by securing it (i.e cable tie) so that it moves with the main unit. This will prevent metal fatigue of the wire which could eventually lead to fracture. For example if the unit is situated on the handlebar then the power lead should move with the handlebar. A violation of this rule would be to place the unit on the handlebar and securing the power lead to the head tube.USB-C LEADS: Both USB Adapter Charging v1.2 (USB-A) and USB-C CC (Current Control) protocols are supported. Poor quality USB-C leads may only support the USB-A protocol and not work well if at all for USB-C to USB-C usage. Use original or good quality USB-C leads that specify USB-C CC (Current Control) or USB-C PD (Power Delivery) support. Keep leads short for slightly higher efficiency.As with the power lead we recommend immobilizing USB-C leads to move with the main unit. Also note that all USB ports suffer electrolysis (corrosion of the pins) when wet. For a long working life it is vital water does not enter USB-C ports. This is discussed further in Placement.For supporting multiple devices use USB-C leads with metal connectors. These are thinner than most plastic counterparts. Some plastic ones will work, as shown, but rubberized ones generally won't fit. For USB-C/USB-A adapter, use a cable with appropriate ends and not a plug adapter.LIGHTS: Dynamo lights can be wired in parallel directly to the dynamo hub. For Schmidt SON hubs piggyback spade connectors can be used. For Shimano and SP both wires can be twisted together and inserted into the plug that comes with the dynamo hub.Dynamo hubs don't have the capability to reliably power a dynamo light and USB device concurrently with a degree of reliability. For this reason we've chosen to automatically turn the Igaro D2 off if a dynamo light is detected.PLACEMENT: Chose a location where the USB ports are protected from water ingression. While the Igaro D2 is water-proof water entering a powered USB port will result in corrosion of the pins and lead to eventual failure1 (see FAQ). The Igaro D2 produces no heat and can be placed inside a bag however when doing so consider how other items inside the bag could move and apply force to USB leads and the sockets they connect to.A handlebar mount is available that places the unit in an easy-to-access location and at an angle which naturally protects from water ingression with a rain skirt providing protection from driving rain. This is our recommended mounting solution.We've also designed 3D printer models for positioning under the stem or to allow re-using an existing bicycle light bracket via a longer bolt. See thingiverse for details. Occasionally we print batches of these and add them to our online store however they are time/resource intensive and we frequently run out of stock. For customization you can download and edit the Freedcad (0.18) under stem or light bracket files. OPERATION: Four lights (red and blue per USB port) provide status and diagnostic information. You should only attempt to look at them in a safe and controlled environment. Igaro is not responsible for loss of bicycle control or damage or injury caused due to attempting to inspect these lights whilst riding.When the bicycle begins to move version information is displayed by a series of red flashes. The left red light denotes software version and the right red light denotes the selected dynamo hub model.The system then waits for stable motion, which is roughly the same speed held for 4 seconds. After this dynamo light detection is performed. If a light is detected the unit will alternative its red lights. For this reason always come to a complete stop when turning dynamo lights on or off.The red light for either USB output indicates a minimum speed has not been reached. The default minimum speed is 8kph and will later vary based upon whether a USB device is successfully powered. For example if a USB device fails to power on at 8kph a percentage increase will apply and a further attempt will be made at the higher speed. If successful and then later speed decreases to 5kph and power fails the new speed will be 5kph plus a percentage increase. The speed value for each USB output is independent.When either USB output is powered the left red light will be replaced by a left blue light. This blue light will have a pattern ranging from a 'blip' to full steady and indicates how much power any connected USB device is consuming.With power successfully applied to USB output #1, and after a short period of steady motion, if there is minimal output (i.e the connected USB device is fully charged), and the minimum speed is met for USB output #2, then this output will enable. If USB output #1 later begins drawing significant power then USB output #2 will be disabled. As such, USB output #1 can be considered to have priority making it better for primary devices such as GPS and smartphones whereas USB output #2 is better for power-banks, camera chargers and similar.Power availability and output consumption are continuously assessed. If an imbalance is detected the system may restart a USB output (auto-reconnect) to further greater consumption. If unsuccessful it won't occur again.Blue light patterns•Blip on - USBv1 (<= 100mA).•Half on/half off - USBv2 (<= 500mA).•Three quarter on/quarter off - USBv3 (<= 900mA).•Steady on - USB-C CC (<= 1.5A).TIPS: The Igaro D2 has no internal storage and so power isn't available when stationary. Constant monitoring ensures USB devices won't experience unstable power fluctuation as the bicycle slows down. Some USB devices like smartphones may 'wake-up' when power is lost however newer phones (Android 9+) usually have a setting in the menu to disable this. See the general FAQ for details.FAQ: A common query is whether it's best to charge a device direct or to charge a power-bank and then 'dump' the power later on. With the Igaro D2 lacking an internal power store it's more important to choose the right approach for the USB devices you wish to charge.COMPATIBLITY: Always remember, there's no such thing as a USB port that doesn't corrode when wet and to keep water out for a long working life. If water does enter a USB port immediately stop riding and remove any connected USB lead. Shake the unit downwards to remove excess water then point upwards to allow remaining water to evaporate. Do not start cycling until you are sure the USB port is completely dry. SOFTWARE: Internally the Igaro D2 uses a programmable processor which relies on software, which we write. It's well tested and we don't expect to discover any bugs or to release new features, however we've left the door open for things we can't plan for, specifically future dynamo lights which are found to be problematic with the Igaro D2's detection method. Finding somebody for you is going to be harder than I thought![end of story]We listened to a dialogue between two people talking about their ideal, “ideal,” or perfect mate - person they would want to have as their boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife.The dialogue begins by Tamara saying that she's “been trying to set up” her “good friend, Rachid, with one of” her “single girlfriends.” To set someone up means, in this dialogue, to help two people meet so they can begin, perhaps, dating each other. If you think two people may like each other, you may try to set them up - try to arrange a meeting between them so they can have a chance to talk and to get to know each other. To set up someone, or to set someone up - either way is correct - has a couple of different meanings, and you want to take a look at our Learning Guide today for those additional definitions.So, Tamara is trying to set up her friend - her male friend - Rachid, but shewasn't sure what Rachid's type was. When we say that “She's my type,” or “He's not my type,” “type,” we mean the ideal characteristics - the personality, the physical appearance that you are looking for in a person with whom you want a romantic relationship. So, he wants a woman - a girl - with a lot of money, and she has to be hot, “hot.” When you use the word hot to describe a person, you mean they are very attractive - they're very sexy - they're very good looking. I have never been described as being hot!But Rachid is looking for a woman who is hot, and Tamara says, “Come on! Be serious.” Rachid is kind of joking here, since that's the answer that every man would say - he wants his girlfriend to be rich and attractive. Tamara uses the expression “Come on,” meaning stop doing that - stop saying that, “Be serious” - tell me what you really think.Rachid then says, “Well, that is what I really think” - no! He says, “Okay, okay, but I don’t know why married people are always trying to get their single friends married off.” Tamara is married; Rachid is single. To marry someone off means to get them to be married - to get them married. “Is it because misery loves company?” Is it because people who are unhappy like to be with other people who are unhappy, assuming that married couples are unhappy.Tamara says, “Stop being a smart aleck and answer the question.” A smart, “smart,” aleck, “aleck,” is someone who does not give serious answers - tries to always be funny - tries to be - give funny answers. I have been described as a smart aleck, for example.Rachid says, “All right. I’m being serous now. What do I look for in a woman? I’d like someone who has a good sense of humor.” To have a good sense, “sense,” of humor means that you can make other people laugh and enjoy laughing and telling jokes. Recognizing the funny things in life; that's to have a good sense of humor.Rachid also wants a woman “who is kind-hearted and easy to talk to.” To be kind-hearted, “kind-hearted,” means to be nice - to be kind - to be generous. To have a kind heart means to be a nice person. He also wants a woman who is “easy to talk to,” someone he can have conversations with - someone who will talk to him and interested in talking to him, someone he is comfortable speaking with. He also says that he wants a woman who “is supportive of” him. To be supportive, “supportive,” means to give help - to give advice, or to be willing to help someone, and that's what Rachid wants in his future wife.ESL Podcast 245 – Characteristics of an Ideal Mate Tamara says, “What about vital statistics? Age, physical type?” The expression vital, “vital,” statistics is a word we - or expression we normally use to describe someone's physical appearance - how old they are, their height, their weight, their hair color. The expression means something a little different in a hospital. When the doctors want to know the vitals - or the vital statistics - they're usually looking for things like the heartbeat and the pulse - other indications of how the body is doing. But here it means the physical appearance of the person.Rachid says that “She has to be pretty, but I’m not too picky about whether she’s a blond, brunette, or redhead.” A blond is a woman, of course, with yellow, light hair; a brunette has dark hair, and a redhead has red hair. My niece is a redhead, for example. She's not married, so if you are between the ages of 18 and 25, email me and I'll - I'll set you up if your type is redheads!Rachid says he's not picky, “picky.” To be picky means to be very difficult to please - somebody who only wants a very specific type and doesn't like anything else. A person who is picky might, for example, only like certain kinds of food.It's usually a negative adjective to describe someone as picky.Rachid says that “She should be my height or shorter, and around my age or a few years younger or older.” So, he doesn't want anyone who's 20 years older, and he wants someone who's more or less his height or a little shorter than him. Tamara says, “That helps a little to narrow down who may be a good match for you.” To narrow, “narrow,” down something (two words) means to go from a large number of choices to a very small number. To narrow down means to eliminate some options - some choices - so that you can focus or concentrate on a smaller number. “We need to narrow down the number of people we are going to interview for this job.” You may have 100 people who want the job - who apply for the job - but you can only interview 10, so you have to narrow down the list of people to 10 people.Tamara says that Rachid's description helps “narrow down who may be a good match for” him - who would be a good person for him. Then she asks him, “Any deal killers?” A deal, “deal,” killer, “killer,” is something that would make someone decide not to do something - not to accept something. So, Tamara's asking if there's anything that he absolutely would not want in his ideal mate. That would be something that would be something that would make him say no - “a deal killer.” A deal is an arrangement and an agreement, usually. You don't often hear that expression in talking about people, but about business deals, for example. But Tamara, here, is using it to describe the potential negative characteristics that would make Rachid say no.ESL Podcast 245 – Characteristics of an Ideal Mate Rachid says, “I don’t like women who are too chatty or who are too bossy.” To be chatty, “chatty,” means to talk a lot. You may have seen on the Internet chat rooms, “chat,” these are places where you talk. So, chat is just another word for talking. Chatty is somebody who talks a lot. Bossy, “bossy,” is someone who likes to tell other people what to do - likes to give orders. So, Rachid doesn't want a woman who's chatty or bossy. I'm with Rachid!Rachid also says, “I have a pretty open mind when it comes to women.” To have an open mind, “open,” open - I know I sometimes pronounce that “ompen,” with an “m” in there, that's my Minnesota dialect - to have an open mind means to be willing to consider many different things - to be flexible - to be the opposite of picky.Tamara says, “Okay, I can think of at least a couple of friends who may be willing to put up with you.” To put up with someone means to tolerate - to be able to be with someone even though they are difficult to be with. Tamara, here, is joking with Rachid.Rachid says, “Put up with me? Are you kidding” - are you joking? “I’m a catch,” “catch.” To say someone is a catch means that they are a person who is very desirable, that many people would want to marry or, in the case of an employee, that a company would want to hire. Normally it's used in talking about someone who would be good to marry. If you say, “I'm a catch,” you're saying lots of people would want to marry me because I am so good. So, Rachid is not very humble! He thinks very highly of himself; he has a high opinion of himself. Tamara says, “Oh, geez,” meaning ugh! It's an expression to mean that you dislike what the other person said. “Finding somebody for you is going to be harder than I thought,” she says.Now let's listen to the dialogue, this time at a native rate of speech[start of story]I’ve been trying to set up my good friend, Rachid, with one of my single girlfriends, but I still wasn’t too sure what his type would be.Tamara: So, tell me what you’re looking for in a woman.Rachid: She has to be rich and hot!Tamara: Come on!
