语言学简明教程Chapter 3
1
3.1 Introduction
Phonology is the study of the sound patterns(systems) of language. It is concerned with the linguistic patterning of speech sounds, that is, the ways in which speech sounds form systems and patterns in human languages, with its primary aim being to discover the principles that govern the way sounds are organized in languages, and to explain the variations that occur. It is also called phonemics.
Chapter 3 Phonology: Sound Patterns (音位/音系学): 3.1 Introduction
3. 2 The Distinctive Sounds of Language
3.3 Minimal pair (最小对立体) 3.4 Some rules of phonology
For example, the words “pan” and “ban” differ only in the initial sound: „pan‟ beg with /b/. Therefore, /p/and /b/ are phonemes in English. The number of phonemes varies from one language to another. English 6 is often considered to have 44 phonemes.
英语文体学Chapter-3-Surface-Structure-Deviation
3.2 Graphological Deviation
Example 6
L(a le af fa ll s) one l iness
The visual effect of this poem is obvious. The lines of poetry imitate the falling of a leaf in late autumn, which is suggestive of the meaning of ‘loneliness’.
3.1 Phonological Deviation
❖3.1.2 Mispronunciation & Sub-Standard Pronunciation
❖E.g. T. Dreiser, Sister Carrie An old Irish woman ye → you murthering → murdering divil → devil thafe → thief
❖The use of mispronunciation and substandard pronunciation may help to vividly describe a character. And substandard language is perceived as more forceful, more direct in expression for standard language is perceived as more civilized, more educated than the substandard one, and sometimes more indirect.

Mr. Fix was happy because he thought it would delay Phileas Fogg long enough for the arrest warrant to arrive. Passepartout and Phileas both received fines and jail time. Phileas Fogg paid a large sum of money to get Passepartout and himself free.Chapter 7 On board the RangoonPhileas Fogg, Mrs. Aouda, Passepartout, and Mr. Fix were all on the Rangoon as it sailed to Hong Kong. Mr. Fix was worried about arresting Phileas before reaching America. He tried to be friendly with Passepartout. Passepartout thought that Mr. Fix was working for the Reform Club. Mrs. Aouda was falling in love with Phileas. A big storm made the ship late, which may cause Phileas to miss the ship to Yokohama.Chapter 8 Mr. Fix and Passepartout have a drink togetherThe travelers were late for the ship to Yokohama, but it was delayed, so they were still in time. Mrs. Aouda agreed to go to London with Phileas Fogg because her rich relative in Hong Kong had moved to Europe. Passepartout and Mr. Fix went to the ship to pay for the cabins. They found out that the ship would leave that night instead of the next morning. They then had a drink in a hotel. Mr. Fix told Passepartout that he was a policeman and asked for his help. Passepartout refused, so Mr. Fix drugged him.Chapter 9 A storm at seaPhileas Fogg discovered that the ship to Yokohama already sailed the previous evening. He could not find Passepartout. He paid the captain of a very small ship a lot of money to take him, Mrs. Aouda, and Mr. Fix to Shanghai. He hoped to catch the steamship to America from there. There was a very bad storm,9but the crew sailed through it. The storm made them late. They arrived in time to see the American steamer leaving Shanghai.Chapter 10 Passepartout needs a jobPassepartout woke up after fainting. Some sailors saw him and put him on the ship to Yokohama just as it was leaving. He slept all night and forgot that he had not told his master that the ship was leaving early. When he realized this he was very angry with himself. He had no money. In Yokohama, he got a job in a circus. During his act, he rushed off stage to hug a man he saw in the audience.Chapter 11 Crossing the Pacific OceanPhileas Fogg got onto the American steamer with Mrs. Aouda and arrived in Yokohama. He looked for Passepartout and remembered that he was once an acrobat. They went to the circus, and Passepartout saw them. They were together again, and were soon on the ship to America. When they arrived in San Francisco, they saw an election rally. A man called Colonel Proctor tried to hit Phileas but instead hit Mr. Fix. Then they caught the train to New York.Chapter 12 Across America by trainThe train traveled across America. It stopped several times. Passepartout saw some buffalo, a preacher, and various other kinds of people along the way. Mrs. Aouda was worried because Colonel Proctor was also on the train. About halfway across the country, the train stopped because the bridge ahead was weak. The train went across it very quickly and then slowed to a stop. The bridge collapsed few minutes later.Chapter 13 Attacked by Sioux!Phileas and Colonel Proctor saw each other on the train. They are about to fight when a band of Sioux attacked the train. There was a terrible battle, and the Sioux were chased away. However, they took10Passepartout and two other passengers with them. Phileas went to rescue the hostages. When he returned, the train had left. Mr. Fix and Mrs. Aouda had waited for him at the station.Chapter 14 A strange way to travelThe travelers rode on a sledge that sailed across the ice and snow like a ship. It was very fast, and they caught the train to New York. However, they were still too late to catch the steamship to Liverpool. Phileas found a steamship that was going to Bordeaux. He paid the captain a lot of money to take them as passengers. He got on board with Passepartout, Mrs. Aouda, and Mr. Fix. Mr. Fix was confused about Phileas but still hoped to arrest him when they got to England.Chapter 15 Mr Fix wins at lastPhileas toke over the ship by locking the captain in his cabin. He used up all the coal to try and began to burn everything that was wooden. He sailed the ship into Queenstown in Ireland, and caught a fast train to Dublin, and then got on a steamship to Liverpool. Mr. Fix arrested him and put him in prison. He was locked up for a few hours and then released because the real robber had already been arrested. Phileas hurried to London, but he was five minutes too late to win his bet.Chapter 16 Phileas Fogg returns homePassepartout and Mrs. Aouda were very worried about Phileas. He had lost the bet and now had no money. He spoke to Mrs. Aouda, and they agreed to get married. Passepartout discovered that it was one day earlier than they had thought. This was because of the time difference between different parts of the world. Phileas rushed to the Reform Club and was just in time to win his bet. He and Mrs. Aouda were married two days later.11Before You ReadI. W ork with your classmates. What are some goodthings about traveling, adventure, and time? What are some bad things? His wife didn’t want the ladies to stay at the family home, Norland, any longer and made their time there very unpleasant. The situation at home caused Mrs. Dashwood to accept an offer from a relation of a small cottage in the country, known as Barton Cottage. Meanwhile, Mrs. Dashwood’s eldest daughter Elinor had mixed feelings for her friend Edward Ferrars following a conversation with her sister Marianne. Edward Ferrars was the brother of Mrs. John Dashwood, further complicating Elinor’s friendship with him.Chapter 2Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters packed their things and move to their new home, Barton Cottage. They found it to be much smaller than Norland, but otherwise very pleasant. Their new neighbors, Sir John Middleton and Lady Middleton, welcomed them to the area and invited them for dinner. At dinner, they met Mrs. Jennings; Lady Middleton’s mother, and Colonel Brandon; a friend of Sir John. Mrs. Jennings enjoyed talking of love and marriage, and soon decided Colonel Brandon and Marianne should marry. Marianne argued that she was too young for Colonel Brandon, before wondering why Edward Ferrars had not yet come to Barton Cottage to see Elinor.Chapter 3The Dashwoods were now comfortable in their new house. One day when Marianne and Margaret were walking in the country, Marianne slipped on the wet ground and was taken home by a man on horseback. He was Mr. Willoughby, a young gentleman visiting the old lady who lived nearby. He soon became a close friend of the Dashwoods, especially of Marianne, and there were many expectations that they would soon marry. He gave her the present of her own horse, which her mother refused to allow her to accept. One afternoon, Mr. Willoughby revealed that he did not like Colonel Brandon. Soon after, the group decided to take a day-trip to the property of Colonel Brandon’s brother-in-law.Chapter 4On the morning of the group’s trip to the country, Colonel Brandon received an urgent letter calling him to town. They were all very interested in Colonel Brandon’s mysterious business. At Sir John’s suggestion, they took a drive in the country. Marianne and Willoughby took a carriage together and disappeared for the rest of the morning to Allenham, the house of Willoughby’s elderly friend. At this point, everyone believed the two were secretly engaged. The next day, Mrs. Dashwood and Elinor returned to the house to find Marianne in tears. They were very confused to hear that Willoughby was leaving for London, and had no plans to return. Soon after, Edward Ferrars arrived to meet with Elinor, but their meeting was quite cold.Chapter 56Edward Ferrars was staying with the Dashwoods at Barton Cottage. Marianne and Elinor noticed that he was out of spirits. Soon after, Mrs. Jennings brought her daughter, Mrs. Palmer, and her husband to meet the Dashwoods. The Dashwoods found Mrs. Palmer to be very talkative, and Mr. Palmer to be very difficult to talk to. Mrs. Palmer took a liking to the lady Dashwoods and invited them to spend Christmas in town. Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Jennings teased Marianne about Willoughby, and the lady Dashwoods discovered that Mrs. Palmer had been spreading the news of an engagement between Marianne and Mr. Willoughby in town.Chapter 6One morning at Barton Park, Sir John introduced the Miss Dashwoods to Lucy and Anne Steele, young relations of his. The lady Dashwoods quickly noticed that Lucy and Anne were trying hard to gain the friendship of Sir John and his wife but were not take a liking to either of them. Lucy and Elinor took a walk together, and to Elinor’s great surprise Lucy revealed that she was engaged to be married to Edward Ferrars. The next day after dinner, Lucy told Elinor the concerns she had with the engagement, trying to make Elinor jealous. Elinor could not believe that Edward was engaged to Lucy, yet felt this explained his recent cold behavior towards her.Chapter 7In January, Mrs. Jennings invited the lady Dashwoods to stay at her house in London. Elinor did not want to leave her mother, but saw that Marianne was very excited at the opportunity to see Mr. Willoughby again. The girls traveled to London and Marianne began writing letters to Willoughby, yet received no reply. Colonel Brandon came to tea at Mrs. Palmer’s apartment, and expressed his disappointment at the rumors about Marianne and Willoughby’s engagement, not explaining why. Some days later the ladies attended a beautiful party with Lady Middleton, where Willoughby treated Marianne coldly, hardly speaking to her. The girls were very confused at his extraordinary behavior.Chapter 8The day after the party, Marianne received a strange, impersonal letter from Willoughby telling her he had never cared for her. He also revealed that he was engaged to a Miss Grey, the fashionable, rich young lady from the party the previous evening. Colonel Brandon told Elinor some news about his past; there was a young lady, Eliza, for whom he had cared for since the death of her mother. Eliza met Willoughby while away at school, and he tricked her and left her pregnant and alone. This was the reason the Colonel had to go to town so suddenly on the day of their planned trip to Whitwall. Several weeks later the girls found out that Willoughby had married Miss Grey, and now had a completely different opinion of him. Marianne was left devastated by Willoughby’s action.Chapter 97One morning during a shopping trip, Elinor met her brother in town. Her brother was very pleased that the girls had managed to find themselves such rich neighbors and friends since leaving Norland. To Elinor’s surprise, her brother told her Edward Ferrars was to be married to a Miss Morton, and not to Lucy Steele. He then visited the Middletons and Mrs. Jennings, and he and his wife decided to give a dinner for the Middletons, the Jenningses, Colonel Brandon, the lady Steeles, and the lady Dashwoods. It was an uncomfortable dinner for Elinor, who was treated quite rudely by Edward Ferrars’ mother. Later, Elinor discovered that the young man she noticed buying a toothpick-case during the shopping trip was actually Edward’s brother Robert Ferrars.Chapter 10Lucy’s sister Fanny revealed the news of Edward and Lucy’s secret engagement, causing a great drama for the Ferrars, family. Edward was disowned by his mother for deciding to marry someone without money, and he was left in a terrible situation. Colonel Brandon learned of the news, and told Elinor of a position in a church at his property Delaford. Elinor was very happy to be able to tell Edward of this, as although it seemed he would marry Lucy she still wanted him to be happy. Mr. Dashwood told Elinor that Edward’s brother, Robert, would now marry Miss Morton, and take his brother’s place as the eldest son. He also told her that Edward’s mother would have preferred him to marry Elinor over Lucy.Chapter 11The lady Dashwoods have traveled to Cleveland at the invitation of the Palmers. Marianne catches a cold after walking in the rain, and soon became very sick. She called for her mother, and so Colonel Brandon went to get her on horseback. One night as Elinor waited for her mother, Willoughby arrived at the house; having heard Marianne was sick and might die. He told Elinor that the letter he wrote to Marianne was actually the words of his wife, and that it hurt him very much to treat Marianne as he did. When Elinor’s mother arrived, she told her daughter her belief that Colonel Brandon was in love with Marianne.Marianne made a slow recovery and realized how selfishly she had behaved toward her family and friends.Chapter 12Marianne soon realized that to marry Willoughby would have been a mistake. One morning, a servant tells the Miss Dashwoods that Edward Ferrars has married. Edward arrives at Barton Cottage soon after, and to Elinor’s surprise they discover that in fact it is Robert that has married Lucy Steele. Edward proposed to Elinor the same day and they were soon married, living at Delaford where Edward worked in the church. He was forgiven by his family. Colonel Brandon asksed Marianne to marry him sometime later and so the four of them lived side-by-side in happiness in the country. Mrs. Dashwood and her youngest daughter visited them often. Willoughby remained married to Miss Grey, but never forgot his love for Marianne.8Before You ReadI. W ork with your classmates. Write the pros andcons of each situation. Beth overcame her shyness to play the wonderful piano in the big house, and at last, Mr. Laurence gave her a small piano that belonged to the granddaughter he lost.Chapter 3Amy was selfish at school and got into trouble. Jo did not want Amy to come with them to the theater. Amy was angry and burned Jo’s book of stories. Now Jo was angry. The next day they went ice-skating and Jo allowed Amy to skate where the ice was thin. Amy fell in the river when the ice broke and Laurie rescued her. Jo was very sorry and promised to learn how to control her anger. Meg went to stay with a friend and heard people talking about her family. She was upset about being too poor to have good clothes, and borrowed a dress from her friend’s sister. She had a good time at the party, but afterwards she was not happy. Marmee told them that she wanted them to be good and happy. This was more important than being rich.Chapter 4The girls invited Laurie to join their club, and he made a post box for them to use. Meg and Jo had three months holiday from their job. Marmee allowed them to play and not work for one week. They soon got bored. Then Marmee decided to have a holiday herself, and the girls had to do all the work for one day. Even Hannah was away. They had a very bad day, and nothing worked out well. They learned that they should do some work and some play. That was the best way to use time. Laurie invited the girls and the Gardiners to go on a picnic lunch with the Vaughn family, who were visiting him from England. They had a lovely day, playing games and eating nice food.Chapter 5Laurie and the girls told each other their dreams and hopes. Jo’s story was printed in the newspaper, and Laurie told her he knew a secret about Meg’s missing glove. They received a telegram that told them that their father was very ill, and Marmee went to Washington to be with him. Mr. Brooke went with her. The6girls and Hannah look after each other with help from Mr. Laurence and Laurie. Their father began to get well.Chapter 6The girls work hard for one week but then got lazy while Marmee was in Washington. Beth went to visit the Hummels. Their baby died of scarlet fever, and Beth got very sick. She almost died, and Marmee had to rush home to see her. Amy stayed with Aunt March and learned not to be selfish. Jo told Marmee the secret of the lost glove.Chapter 7Laurie played a trick on Meg. He pretended to be Mr. Brooke and wrote her love letters. When Marmee found out, she was angry and made Laurie apologize. Laurie also got into trouble with his grandfather, but Jo helped to solve the problem. Beth got better and so did Mr. March. He arrived home on Christmas Day and everyone was very happy. The next day, Mr. Brooke asked Meg if she would marry him when he had enough money. At first she refused because she was afraid. Then Aunt March came and warned her that she should not marry him. She would not get anything from Aunt March’s will if she did. This made Meg annoyed, and she agreed to marry John Brooke in two years time if he had enough money.Chapter 8It took three years for John to earn enough money to marry Meg. He bought a small house and the wedding took place in the March’s garden. Everybody enjoyed it very much. Amy tried different kinds of art and had a party for her friends, but nobody came to it. Jo continued to write and won a competition. Then she wrote a novel and it was published. She was very happy to earn her own money.Chapter 9Meg and John were very happy in their new home, but they had some problems. Meg tried to make jam and John brought home a guest for dinner. Later, she was envious of Sallie and decided to buy an expensive dress. John was upset, but Meg solved the problem and everybody was happy again. Amy took Jo out for some visits, but Jo behaved badly. She told Aunt March and Aunt Carrol that she didn’tlike favors and couldn’t speak French. Amy worked at the fair and behaved very well when another girl argued with her. Aunt Carrol decided to go to Europe and invited Amy to go with her. Jo was disappointed.Chapter 10Amy went to Europe where she met Fred Vaughn. She decided to marry him if he asked her. Mrs. March was worried about Beth and Jo thought that Beth was in love with Laurie. She was worried because Laurie seemed to love her instead of Beth. She went to New York to live with her mother’s friend. She7taught the children and wrote sensation stories. She met a German teacher and liked him, though he was old and poor. She decided that sensation stories were not good and stopped writing them.Chapter 11Laurie asked Jo to marry him, but she refused. She said that they would not be good together. Laurie went to Europe with his grandfather. He met Amy there and went to a dance with her. Beth was sick and Jo took her to the beach for a holiday. Beth told her that she was going to die, and they were very sad. Meg spent too much time with the children and not enough with her husband. Her mother gave her some good advice and soon the house was happy again.Chapter 12Laurie stayed in Nice with Amy. She thought he was lazy, and told him that he should do something to make Jo love him. He thought about this and agreed. He went to his grandfather in Paris and tried to write music, but couldn’t. He wrote to Jo, but she still refused him. She was looking after Beth, who was dying. Beth slowly got worse and died. They wrote to Amy and told her. Laurie came to stay with her again and finally fell in love with her and they agreed to marry. Jo tried to be like Beth but found it difficult. She began to write again and her stories were much better, but she felt very alone.Chapter 13Jo was worried about becoming an old maid. Laurie and Amy arrived home. They surprised everybody by telling them that they were already married. Everybody was very happy to see them. They had a big meal together and then Mr. Bhaer arrived as well. Laurie and Amy realized that he would ask Jo to marry him, and decided that they would help with money if they could. Meg and John’s children were growing older, and the family loved them very much.Chapter 14Mr. Bhaer walked with Jo every day and at last he asked her to marry him. She agreed. Aunt March died and left her house to Jo, who made it a school for boys. Mr. Bhaer taught the boys. Amy had a daughter and called her Beth, and Jo had two sons. The girls realized that their dreams did not come true, but they were happy with their lives.8Before You ReadI. W ork with your classmates. What do these wordsmake you think of? The Old English period (449-1100)
The history of the English language begins with the conquest and settlement by the Angles, Saxons and jutes from about 450 AD. The language they spoke was Anglo-Saxon, which replaced the language used by the former inhabitant. The next 650 years are known as the Old English period of the English language. The vocabulary of old English were chiefly Anglo-Saxon.
Reading 1: Background information
Modern English (1500- the present)
In the early stage of this period(1500-1700), the Renaissance brought great changes to the vocabulary. From the 16th century onward, English borrowed words from an increasing number of languages, the major ones being the three Romance languages— French, Spanish and Italian. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as a result of exploration, colonization and trade, many words came in from nonEuropean languages, like Chinese ‖Hong fu‖ and the Japanese ―kimono‖.
Reading 1: Background information
Middle English (1100-1500)
The transitional period from Old English to Modern English is known as Middle English, which is characterized by the strong influence of French. Since the French-speaking Normans were the ruling class, French was used for all state affairs and for most social matters; but the masses continued to speak English. Only toward the end of the 15th century did English become once more the language of the whole country. However, the language showed vast changes in the English vocabulary– the loss of a large part of the old English words and the adoption of thousands of French words.

Denotation refers to the actual dictionary definition of the word, without the attachment of an emotional response. For example, if you look up the word aggressive, you will find that it means ―characterized by unprovoked offensive attacks, hostile behavior, vigorously energetic, and boldly assertive.
