JSA Philosophy
• Job Safety Analysis is based on the following ideas:

What Is JSA?
• Method of identifying hazards • Means of breaking the work process down into simple chronological steps • System for allowing employees to easily understand hazards associated with the specific job • The JSA is the final checkpoint for verifying the safety preparedness of the crew and the jobsite!
• Special Inspection
– Targeted – Specific to exposures – Based on facility operations
• Formal Tours
– Weekly, monthly, or daily – Maintenance and production reviews

OSHA Guidelines for Inspections
• • • • • List departments and operations involved List and describe operational activities Assign inspection dates Sequence the inspection route Identify and instruct follow-up assignments
• This will help achieve the safest and most efficient manner to perform a specific job.

How Jobs Are Selected for a JSA
• Jobs with high accident and injury rates • Jobs with the potential to cause severe or disabling injuries or illness • Jobs in which one single error could lead to a severe accident or injury • Jobs that are new to your operation or have undergone changes in procedures • Jobs complex enough to require written instructions • All other jobs
– – – – Supervisors Employees All affected personnel Competent Persons
• Completed prior to the start of any job/work task and discussed with personnel completing the work and personnel in the work area

Benefits of a JSA
• • • • • Reduces injuries Increases productivity Increases morale Protects employees Assists in standard-specific compliance (e.g. personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance) • Increases communication between crew
Objectives
• Discuss and emphasize the importance of the JSA process • Provide information to develop understanding of the control measures used to plan, identify and control hazards • Review requirements of the Subcontractor Safety and Health Program ( Section 5-1 Safe Work Planning) to ensure proper implementation of the JSA process
