但在这出戏中作者要着力表现的是他的残忍，他因为自己的利益（安东尼奥“借钱给人不取利息”妨碍了他赚钱）和尊严受到损害（他也是一个虔诚的教徒），就无情地报复安东尼奥并且不惜一切代价，结果适得其反，自食其果。
由于他的身份是犹太人和异教徒而倍受欺侮，从剧中其他人反复强调的话语可以看出来，当时这样的身份是受人歧视的，以致最后他落得人财两空，因此他又有令人同情的一面。
值得注意的是，夏洛克控诉了资本主义原始积累的血腥，这虽然是他在为自己争辩但也是对当时历史的真实写照，从这一点上来说，他又具有一定的洞察力。
鲍西娅是剧中另一重要人物，她是人文主义新女性的典型，是作者极力歌颂的人物形象。
