The main difference of eating habits between Chinese and the west country is that in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody can share while in West everyone has their own portion.
Pouring
The host should pour for the guests and always make sure everyone’s cups are not empty for long to show hospitality . The host should pour for others from the senior and superior to the junior and inferior. And when other people fill your cup or glass, you should express your thanks. But if you don’t want to drink any more , you could say “hao hao hao” or “gou le gou le ” to stop pouring . Guests can not pour for themselves。

Even there is no official “table manners’ in china, while there is “eating behavior”. Once there is “eating behavior”, there must be some eating manners up to standard. Here are some characteristics on Chinese eating: a. The meal may only begin once the host and all his guests are seated. The host should actively take care of all his guests, inviting them to enjoy the meal. b. Except soup, all dishes should be eaten with chopsticks. c. Chinese like to talk loudly during the dinner which is different from the west , talking with a full mouth is usually allowed though some people think it is impolitely . d. Besides , when you are eating or drinking do not make some voice .It’s better to put the bowls and plates quietly。 e. When eating food that contains bones, it is customary that the bones should be spatted out in the dining plate within a neat pile. Spitting them onto the floor is almost never accepted.

A formal Chinese dinning is always accompanied by tea, beer or distilled spirit. Drinks plays an important role in Chinese dietary
culture .

Different from the west cooking , Chinese food is
usually cut into proper pieces when cooking ,so you don’t have to use folks or knives to eat them . As a result thus, you’ll use different tableware

A toast to others is a characteristic in Chinese dinning. When all people sit down and all cups are filled, the host should toast others first, together with some simple prologue to let the dinning start. During the dining after the senior's toast, you can toast anyone from superior to inferior at their convenience. When someone toasts you, you should immediately stop eating and drinking to accept and toast in response. If you are far from someone you want to toast, then you can use your cup or glass to rap on the table to attract attention rather than raise your voice. However, it is impolite to urge others to drink 《礼记· 曲礼》所谓的“侍饮于长者,酒进则起,拜受于尊所。长 者辞,少者反席而饮。长者举未釂,少者不敢饮。长者赐,少者、贱 者不 敢辞”。陪长者喝酒,要站起来走到长者跟前,长者劝止,再返 回自己座位饮酒。若席间的长者没有举杯,其他人不能先饮酒;对于 长者的敬酒,辈分低的人不能推辞不饮。

People’s dining position reflects the most obvious etiquette in Chinese table manner. The first-class seat is usually in the interior of a room which facing to the door. Generally speaking the host usually sits on the first-class seat but if there is a guest, the host will offer the first-class seat to the guest friendlly. Even though it is an ordinary home dinner , people should start it following their elder. 中国古代,北方为上(易经中的乾位),东面是古人崇拜的 太阳升起的地方,在北之左,“吉事尚左”,“君子居则贵 左”(《老子》),仅比上首次之。西在北之右,“用兵者贵右” 〔《老子》),是将军座、凯旋座,再次之。 (国际交往遵循“右尊左卑”的惯例) 《礼记· 曲礼》载:“虚坐尽后,食坐尽前。”意思是说,要 坐得比尊者和长者靠后一些,以示谦恭;吃饭时则要尽量坐得靠 前一些,以免不慎掉落饭菜, 弄脏了座席。
