(Text 1)
W:I can t believe that you hurt your back. I thought you were a professional weightlifter.
M:I am a professional, and usually that weight is no problem. I was just stupid. I thought I could lift 180 kg without warming up.
(Text 2)
M:Could you describe the two people who robbed the bank?
W:Well, the man was tall with dark hair and he was wearing a black sweater. What I remember about the woman was that she did most of the talking. (Text 3)
W:Honey, where s my favorite orange skirt? I thought you said that you would wash it, so I put it in the bathroom.
M:It has to be dry-cleaned. I took it there this morning. It should be done by this afternoon.
W:Oh, no. What am I going to wear to the party?
(Text 4)
W:I ve been studying American History this year, and I have really enjoyed my studies.
M:That s the subject that I have always enjoyed, too. When you think of the founding fathers, who do you admire the most?
W:There are so many that I admire that it would be hard to choose.
(Text 5)
M:You want $20 for this scarf? Can you lower the price?
W:You can have it for $18.
M:I ll take it for $15 and not a penny more.
W:$17 and it s a deal.
(Text 6)
M:I heard that your brother is getting back from Sweden this Saturday.
W:That s right! I m so excited to see him. He s been away for almost two years exploring mountains. I talked to him for the first time in almost a year and a half last night! It s such a relief to know that he s okay. M:Yeah, it must be hard to be out there without any way to communicate. W:It was peaceful for him, but hard for his family! We never knew if he was okay or not.
(Text 7)
M:Can you tell me how to reach the bank, please?
W:Which bank? There are two: the Allied Irish Bank and the Bank of Ireland. M:I have an AIB pass card and I want to get money from the bank.
W:You need to go to the Allied Irish Bank which is near the local shopping center, Dunnes Stores.
M:How do I get there? I have no knowledge of this area.
W:Cross the road and turn left at the other side. Walk along the footpath until you reach the traffic lights. You will see a shopping center on the right hand side. Walk across the road and turn right after the shopping center. Keep going straight for about 100 meters and the bank is to your left.
M:It sounds a little bit difficult. How far is it from here?
W:It s not so difficult. It s about five minutes walk from here. I can draw a map for you if you wish.
M:Oh, I would really appreciate that.
(Text 8)
W:Has your sister s baby arrived yet?
M:Yes, I ve been an uncle since yesterday at noon!
W:Congratulations! Is it a boy or a girl?
M:An eight-pound boy. They named him Francis.
W:Why did they name your nephew Francis?
M:I don t know. They were considering a lot of other names, like Richard, Edward, Phillip, and David.
W:What if the baby had been a girl? Did they have any girl s names in mind? M:They couldn t agree on any. Whenever I suggested a girl s name, my
sister said, “I hate that name!” Some people have very strong feelings about names.
W:I think most people do. Sometimes I start out not liking someone just because I don t like their name.
M:That reminds me of something I read a few days ago. Somebody discovered that children with certain names get low grades in school just because of their names.
W:You mean their family names?
M:No, their first names. That s what the article said.
(Text 9)
M:Hi, Lucy! How are you? I have not seen you for a long time.
W:Fine! I am busy preparing for the exam these days.
M:Are you going to see the basketball match this afternoon? I m really excited about it.
W:Uh, a basketball match?
M:It is the “Big Game” of the season! And we re playing against one of
the best school teams in the state, so it s going to be really exciting. W:Great! That sounds wonderful! Did you get the ticket?
M:Yes. And some of our friends will go and watch the game. But one of our friends has to go out of the town this afternoon and he won t be able to watch the game, so I have another ticket. Do you want to watch the match? W:Sure, I would love to go! I ve never watched our school s basketball games before.
M:Great! There will be a bus picking at 1 pm and the game begins at 3 pm. W:Thank you for giving me the ticket.
(Text 10)
Keeping up in the job market is very difficult, especially for women. Women have been taught to be very passive and just do what they re told. This can cause problems when women enter the fast-paced business world, because they re not tough enough to get the jobs they want or to ask for
the things they need.
The first thing that women need to remember is that they are just as valuable in the workplace as men. In fact, women can often solve problems more creatively. This is something that can be very helpful in the world of business. The most important thing is to be confident. Men often get high-powered positions because of their confidence. Make good eye contact, speak in a strong voice, smile a lot, and don t apologize unless it s
absolutely necessary. Make sure that you are particularly careful about how you dress. This means wearing clothes that do not show too much skin. You want to look professional, not sexy. Keep these things in mind, and you ll be on your way to becoming a successful businesswoman. And remember, never take no for an answer, and always ask for more money. You just might get a little bit more than you thought.
A
Pesca was the smallest human being I ever saw. He had left Italy for political reasons, and had been working as a teacher in London for many years.
The ruling idea of Pesca s life was to show his thanks to the country that had given him a shelter by doing his best to turn himself into an Englishman. He desired to become an Englishman in his habits and amusements, as well as in his personal appearance. Finding us distinguished, as a nation, by our love of athletic exercises, the little man devoted himself
to all our English sports and recreations.
I saw him risk his life blindly in the sea at Brighton where we were bathing together. If we had done any exercise unique to my own nation I would have looked after Pesca carefully; but as foreigners are generally quite as well able to take care of themselves in the water as Englishmen,
it never occurred to me that the art of swimming might add one more to the list of manly exercises which he believed that he could learn on the spot.
Soon after we had both struck out from shore, I stopped, finding my friend didn t follow me. To my amazement, I saw nothing but two little
arms struggling above the surface of the water. I dived and pulled him back to the shore. When he recovered, his warm Southern nature broke. He
declared that he should never be happy again until he offered me some
service which I might remember to the end of my days.
Little did I think then that the opportunity of serving me was soon to come; that he was eager to seize it; and that by so doing he was to turn my existence into a new channel. If I had not dived for Professor Pesca when
he lay under water, I should never, perhaps, have heard even the name of the woman, who now directs the purpose of my life.
21.The author didn t look after Pesca carefully when bathing in the sea due to the fact that .
A.they both had done the unusual English exercise before
B.foreigners were generally bathing not far from the shore
C.he was sure that Pesca would learn to swim on the spot

A.the author was quite helpful to those in need
B.Pesca sometimes acted rather thoughtlessly
C.one can never be too careful when bathing in the sea
D.showing off one s manly behavior may cause others trouble
23.Why did Pesca want to do the author some favour?
A.His warm nature made him so.
B.He treated the author as his best friend.
C.He enjoyed doing something unforgettable.
D.He would have died without the author s help.
24.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Pesca changed the author s life completely.
B.Pesca met a woman who later directed his life.
C.Pesca turned his existence into a new channel.
D.Pesca missed an opportunity to reward the author.

Today, we are told, children don t spend enough time in the fresh air. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV—they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature.
But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some “wild time”. They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, rummaging for conkers and playing hide-and-seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park.
Children often need a helping hand from mum and dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from National Health Service says, “We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go.”
So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing “nature s playground” is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, “We need to make more space for wild time in children s daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted.”
This might sound a bit old-fashioned to you or maybe, like me, it has made you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood. There s no age limit on enjoying yourself!
28.Children are encouraged to do the following activities
EXCEPT .
A.building dens
B.climbing trees
C.playing hide-and-seek
D.watching TV
29.According to Andy Simpson, we know that .
A.wild time is hard to design
B.wild time is beneficial to children
C.parents know the importance of wild time
D.parents like keeping their children indoors
30.What s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Modern children need wild time.
B.Adults value outdoor activities.
C.The present world is complicated.
D.This generation of kids have no freedom.
31.The last paragraph suggests that .
A.people like thinking of the past
B.it is out of date to go outdoors
C.it is too late for adults to enjoy nature
D.people at any age can enjoy wild time
28.D 根据文章第2段中的“They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside.Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, rummaging for conkers and playing hide-and-seek are just some of the things kids can do”可知A、B、C三项都是鼓励孩子们应该去做的事。
29.B 根据文章第3段中Andy Simpson 所说的“We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go”可知,户外活动时间对孩子们的成长有好处。
31.D 根据文章最后一段最后一句“There s no age limit on enjoying
D
Public distrust of scientists comes partly from the unclear boundaries between science and technology, between discovery and manufacture. Most governments, perhaps all governments, prove the value of public spending on scientific research in terms of the economic benefits the scientific research has brought in the past and will bring in the future. Politicians remind their voters of the wonderful machines our scientists have invented, the new drugs to relieve old diseases, and the new medical equipment and techniques by which previously incurable conditions may now be treated and lives saved.
At the same time, the politicians demand that scientists suit their research to economic needs, and that they put in the first place research proposals that are “near the market” and can be translated into the greatest return in the shortest time. Dependent on politicians for much of their funding, scientists have little choice but to obey. Like the rest of us, they are members of a society that values the creation of wealth. Many have different opinions, but keep them to themselves.
In such circumstances no one should be too hard on people who are doubtful about conflicts of interest. When we learn that the distinguished professor trying to convince us of the safety of a particular product is a consultant (顾问) of the company making it, we cannot be blamed for wondering whether the money he receives from the company might cloud his professional judgment. Even if the professor holds no consultancy with any firm, some people may still distrust him because of his association with those who do, or at least wonder about the source of some of his research funding.
This attitude can have damaging effects. It questions the honesty of individuals working in a profession that thinks intellectual honesty is the most important. This makes it easier to distrust all scientific statements, especially those made by the scientists who present themselves as experts. The scientist most likely to understand the safety of a nuclear reactor,
for example, is a nuclear engineer, and a nuclear engineer is mostly likely to be employed by the nuclear industry. If a nuclear engineer declares that a reactor is unsafe, we believe him, because clearly it is not to his advantage to lie about it. If he tells us it is safe, on the other hand, we distrust him, because he may well be protecting the employer who pays his salary.
32.What is the chief concern of most governments when it comes to
scientific research?
A.Quick economic returns.
B.Support from the voters.
C.The reduction of public spending.
D.The budget for a research project.
33.Scientists have to adapt their research to economic needs in order
to .
A.translate knowledge into wealth
B.obtain funding from the government
C.impress the public with their achievements
D.turn the value of their existence into reality
34.According to the author, people doubt the professional judgment of scientists because .
A.their statements often turn out to be wrong
B.sometimes they hide the source of their research funding
C.some of them do not put intellectual honesty in the first place
D.they could be influenced by their association with the project concerned
35.Why does the author say that public distrust of scientists can have damaging effects?
A.It makes things difficult for scientists seeking research funds.
B.It may discourage scientists from doing independent research.
C.People would not believe scientists even when they tell the truth.
D.Scientists themselves may doubt the value of their research findings. 【
33.B 根据文章第2段第2句“Dependent on politicians for much of their funding, scientists have little choice but to obey”可知,科学家们使自己的研究满足经济需求是为了从政府处获得研究经费。
35.C 根据文章最后一段中的“This makes it easier to distrust all scientific statements...If he tells us it is safe, on the other hand, we distrust him...”

As is known to us all, every human being has the right to choose how they feel. 36
You may be in low spirits or heartbroken over something that happened to you or something you did a long time ago, maybe even years ago, to yourself or to others. 37 In other words, there is no need to carry
that pain inside your heart, day after day, year after year. You must not let it grow continuously because soon enough, the issue you are sad about will turn into your normal way of thinking. Negative thinking has a chain effect!
38 However, if you do not let go of the pains of yesterday, the joys of today and tomorrow will never be discovered. They will be clouded by your unhappiness. You must let go of the past to be happy. There are no ifs, ands, or buts!
39 Instead, focus on what you can do about today and in the future. You see, today you have no control of what happened in the past. You cannot do anything about it, so why live there?
Start living and loving the things you can control such as this beautiful day or maybe call a friend that you had a relationship with that turned bad and make it up. Go out and create happy experiences. 40
A.Quit living negatively in the past.
B.You can choose happiness or sadness.
C.So how can you get rid of this bad feeling?
D.Living in happiness makes your life positive.
E.But you need not stay in that sad state any longer.
F.And turn happiness into a constant way of thinking.
G.When one door closes in life, another one will open.
