第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
The Dial-a-Bus,which is a mixture of an ordinary bus and a taxi, can pick up passengers at their doors or at a nearby bus stop shortly after they have telephoned for service. The computer will know the location of its vehicles(车辆),how many passengers are on them, and where they are heading. It will choose the right vehicle and send it to the caller according to the programming of the system.
The cost of taxi rides can be reduced by sharing rides, and the Dial-a-Bus system is designed to do this as rmation from the study for the new system suggests that depending on passengers’need,door-to-door transportation can serve its passengers almost as fast as a private taxi but at one-quarter to one-half the price.
The key point is that the Dial-a-Bus may do what other transportation systems don’t do now.The system will attract more off-peak(非高峰期的)business than other normal transportation does. And if it does attract enough passengers, the off-peak income(收入)would keep Dial-a-Bus away from the economic problems faced by other transportation services, which are used only 3 or 4 hours a day.It could also help reduce dependence upon cars.
There is little question that the idea for the Dial-a-Bus system will come true. Most of the existing vehicles can comfortably carry 12 to 24 passengers. Some can also offer services to puters, radio communications and telephone links are enough for the needs of the Dial-a-Bus system.
A limited demonstration(演示)of the Dial-a-Bus idea can almost certainly be finished within
3 years at a cost of less than 1 million using existing equipment.A full-scale(全面的)demonstration of the Dial-a-Bus service, using vehicles and equipment specially designed to test all the possible advantages, probably can be completed within 7 years at a cost of less than 20 million.
56.One important character of the Dial-a-Bus system is that________.
A.it serves special persons
B.it has no drivers
C.it needs no electricity
D.it is fast and cheap
57.We can learn from the third paragraph that________.
A.the Dial-a-Bus does the same things as other transportation systems do
B.more people will enjoy the Dial-a-Bus service at off-peak hours
C.other transportation services will earn more money than the Dial-a-Bus service
D.more people will drive cars instead of using the Dial-a-Bus system
58.What can we know about the Dial-a-Bus according to the passage?
A.It can pick up passengers just at a nearby bus stop.
B.It can offer services to any place except airports.
C.It has many advantages over other transportation.
D.It will be put to use after the limited demonstration.
59.According to the passage, the use of the Dial-a-Bus system in the future is________.

When the Ministry of Education planned to make high school students learn to dance a series of dances that were thought to be suitable for students, including three for primary pupils, two for middle school students, and three for high school students, people had different attitudes towards the new idea.Several educational experts spent two years choosing the dances considering the needs of students of different ages.Every dance took four to five minutes. It was said that the dancing lessons would be arranged in students’spare time and as a part of their sports education, and after the plan was carried out students in high school could dance the waltz hand in hand. Some students have already danced their waltz.Did they enjoy it?
Li Ye,16,Nanjing Meiyuan High School,Jiangsu
“We learned some basic steps of the waltz in our PE class on the first day of our new term.It was embarrassing to dance hand in hand with a girl.I’d rather do the waltz with a boy.Anyway, most of us didn’t know each other very well.I would prefer to play basketball or do radio gymnastic exercises (广播体操) during the break and the PE class.”
Huang Xinchan,15,Changsha Dizhi High School,Hunan
“I like dancing, but the waltz in pairs makes no sense. When the boy put his hand around my waist,my face went red.Luckily our teacher finally decided to cancel (取消) this part. Why not teach us dances that we can do alone?I heard that students in a school learned martial arts (武术),because there are no touches on bodies. Then there will be no concern from parents that we could fall in love too early.”
Zhao Congke,17,Chengdu Experimental High School,Sichuan
“We danced last term.So the waltz is not that new for us.I was shy at the beginning and often stepped on my partner’s feet. Now it is enjoyable. As I have to invite the girl to dance and take care of her while dancing,it has made me into a young gentleman.”
You can click here to see more attitudes from students. If you have your own idea and want to communicate with all high school students, you can E-mail us at my attitude@.

Humour is a most effective, yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying“no”,criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs,it is the only tool that can succeed,it is a way to discuss subjects which are so sensitive that serious dialogue may start a riot. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than the people in any other forum.
Humour is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating into a big deal.Recently a neighbour of mine had a squabble with his wife as she drove him to the airport.Airborne,he left miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she got home, she received a phone call.“Person-to-person for Mrs. I. Apologize.”in toned the operator.“That’s spelled P’as in...”In a twinkling, the whole day changed from grim to lovely at both ends of the wire.
An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist in a major charity drive.Austerity was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen...and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tightrope walker, brought in a large roast turkey. He successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing threw the bird onto the dining-room floor.
The boy stood rooted, guests stared at their plates.Moving only her head the hostess smiled at her son,“No harm,Daniel,”she said,“just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen.”...she enunciated clearly so he would think about what she was saying...“and bring in the other one.”
A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a conspiracy of fun.
64.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Humour is the key to success in our work and our lives.
B.Humour enables us to cope with difficult situations effectively.
C.Humour is the only best way to criticize someone without losing his face.
D.Humour makes fun of any difficult situation.
65.Which of the following is NOT stated in the passage?
A.Comedians on TV are believed to have done a lot in making people more tolerant of racial and religious differences.
B.To make up differences, humour is a most acceptable as well as a most effective means.
C.People often turn to humorous ways when meeting with difficult situations because of their effectiveness.
D.Only by adopting the means of humour can one succeed in some jobs.
66.What caused the roast turkey to drop onto the floor?
A.The backward movement of the door.
B.The son’s hasty behaviour.
C.Someone happened to be at the door.
D.The bird raised by the family.
67.By saying “...and bring in the other one.”,the hostess meant that ________.
A.the son had to cook another turkey for the guests
B.she had already made more than one turkey ready for the dinner
C.some other dishes would be served instead of a turkey
D.the son could serve the same turkey after it was cleaned
D
As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to family meal than food.Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children.“In general, the more question-asking the parents do,the higher the children’s IQ scores,”Lewis says.“And the more children there are,the less question-asking there is.”
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹).Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention.“Middle children are invisible,”says Lewis.“When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.”There is,however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention.“When the TV is on,”Lewis says,“dinner is a non-event.”
68.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ________.
A.show the relationship between parents and children
B.teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table
C.report on the findings of a study
D.give information about family problems
69.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ________.
A.they are busy serving food to their children
B.they are busy keeping order at the dinner table
C.they have to pay more attention to younger children
D.they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family
70.By saying “Middle children are invisible” in Paragraph 3,Lewis means that middle children ________.

D.find it hard to keep up with other children
