4. Now that you‘re leaving college, you‘re going to have to choose reality over theory. In other words, you‘ll have to become a(n) realist, because what matters now is what works in practice, not in theory.
5. A lot of self-esteem training you got through school was an exercise in wishful thinking. You feel great about yourself, but you have to figure out what you‘re truly good at and go for it.
III. Summary
A. Complete the following statements with words or expressions from the box. Use their proper forms.
1. Most people think love is a fortunate accident, which to experience is merely a matter of chance. They yearn for it, but hardly anyone regards love as an art which needs to be learned about.
2. This mistaken idea is based on several premises. The first is that most people see love primarily as a problem of how to be loved, rather than that of loving.
3. The second premise behind this attitude is the assumption that to love is simple, but to find the right object to love is difficult. This attitude is actually has several deep-rooted reasons concerning the development of modern society.
4. The third error leading to the wrong idea is that people often confuse the initial excitement of falling into love and the permanent state of standing in love. They don‘t know that love is what is left over when passion has burned away.
5. We should face up to the fact that love is an art. To learn an art, we should not only grasp theoretical knowledge but have a lot of practice. Besides, we should consider the mastery of the art to be more important than any thing else such as money, success, prestige and power.

III. Summary
1. American pop culture has become the biggest export of the U.S., which is reflected in the dominance in show business around the world by American-made products.
2. According to Commerce Department statistics, total exports of intellectual property from the U.S. have risen greatly since the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
3. Despite all the discussion and debate on the merits and demerits of the U.S. dominance, the penetration of U.S. culture is beyond dispute. The youth everywhere have a way to get to know their own culture and that of the United States.
4. There was a time, however, when American-made entertainment could be found only in places with financial and technical means to allow it across the border.
5. Of course, the spread of U.S.-made pop culture follows several larger worldwide trends: prosperity of virtually every nation, which provides people with more leisure time and disposable income.
6. U.S. popular culture is believed to be intertwined with fast food restaurants, T-shirts, expensive sneakers and shopping malls in the sense that they are all viewed as part of the same U.S. invasion.
7. Yet the causes behind the spread of U.S.-made pop are manifold: partly linguistic, partly economic, and partly a reflection of what is uniquely American in terms of its historical, racial and ideological development.
8. Made-in-America cultural products enjoy the competitive advantage of being created in English. This favorable condition gives American entertainment products immediate entrée to some of the biggest markets in the world, including places where people don‘t speak much English, and generates large revenues.
