Section Ⅴ Writing-

Jess Owens seemed sure to win the long jump at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Just the year before, he had set three world records in one day. He was the record holder for the running broad jump with 26 feet 8 1/4 inches — a record that would stand for 25 years.
As he walked to the long jump pit, however, Owens saw a tall, blueeyed, blond German taking practice jumps in the 26foot range. Owens was nervous. He was aware of the tension created with his presence. He knew the Nazi's (纳粹) desire to prove their “superiority”, especially over the blacks.
The pressure was obvious, and on his first jump Owens absently jumped from several inches beyond the takeoff board. Embarrassed, he fouled (犯规) on the second attempt, too. He was only one foul away from being driven out of the game.
At this point, the tall German approached Owens and introduced himself as Luz
Long. Then an amazing event took place. The black son of an American farmer and the white model of Nazi manhood chatted in view of the entire stadium. What were they talking about?
Since the qualifying distance was only 23 feet 5 1/2 inches, Long suggested making a mark several inches before the takeoff board and jumping from there, just to play it safe. Amazing! At the beginning of World War Ⅱ, this model of Germany's strength was providing technical assistance and words of encouragement to an enemy both on and off the field.
Owens qualified easily. In the finals, he set an Olympic record and earned the second of four gold medals during the 1936 Olympics. The first person to congratulate Owens was Luz Long — in full view of Adolf Hitler.
Owens never saw Long again, for Long was killed in World War Ⅱ. “You could melt down all the medals and cups I have,” Owens later wrote, “and they w ouldn't be plating on the 24carat (克拉) friendship I felt for Luz Long.”

Traveling independently for the first time can be stressful if you don't plan your trip carefully. In Cuba, my friends and I really learned the value of planning ahead and being responsible tourists. So, before you set off, take a look at my list of useful tips:
Plan who to go with.
Think about your travel buddies (朋友) carefully. Traveling with just one person has its advantages and disadvantages, but traveling in a group isn't easy either. In a group, everyone wants something different. Be patient and understanding, and try to find a compromise (妥协). __1__ And remember: if you take everyone's views into account before you go, you won't have so many arguments!
__2__
Before you go, find out about the country's culture and look up some basic words and useful phrases in the local language. __3__ If you say just a few words in their language, the local people will really appreciate it, and everyone will feel more comfortable.
Be responsible.
It's really important to be a responsible tourist and to try to support the local economy. __4__ We stayed in private homes in different parts of Cuba. Our hosts were really kindhearted and their generosity was amazing. If we had stayed in a hotel, we wouldn't have had these experiences.

The roots of basketball are deep in Canada. In 1891 the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who was from Almonte, Ontario.
Having been given the task of creating a new indoor sports activity while conducting a physical education class at the international YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith designed what we now call basketball. The original game involved 13 rules and a peach basket hung ten feet above the floor. Even though it took place in the United States, at least ten of the players who located in the first game were university students from Quebec.
Basketball played by school and local amateur teams has been part of the Canadian sports scene since the turn of the century. Hoops teams representing Canada have joined in Olympic Games since 1936 and in the World Championships since 1954.
One of the most storied amateur teams in Canadian basketball history is the Edmonton Commercial Graduates (Grad's), a group of Canadian women who dominated (占优势) the sport in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Over 25 years, the Grad's played 522 games at home and abroad, against both women's and men's teams. The Grad's accomplished a recordbreaking winning streak (连胜场数) of 147 games and throughout their basketball tenure (任期) won remarkable (卓越的) 502 times.
The National Basketball Association also has origins in Canada. The NBA's first game was played in Toronto nearly seventy years ago, on November 1, 1946 when the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The teams were part of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.
The Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies joined the NBA beginning in the 199596 season, becoming the first nonU.S. cities to join the league since the Toronto Huskies were oneyear members of the BAA. In summer 2001, the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis, Tennessee.

Who could have imagined that a treadmill on wheels would one day go somewhere? The Lopifit is an unusual means of transportation that allows you to power an electric bicycle by walking on a treadmill.
Bruin Bergmeester, the founder of the Lopifit says it all started when he asked himself the question “How can I use the treadmill outdoors?” He eventually came up with a functional design, added an electric engine, and the Lopifit was made. It's similar to an electric bicycle in that the motor only engages when the rider puts power in as well.
To use the Lopifit, simply turn on the battery and use your foot to slide the treadmill backwards and activate the motor. Then get on and enjoy the ride! If you need speed, just walk on the treadmill, and if you want to coast, all you have to do is stay still and admire the view. To stop, you have two hand brakes. The right lever stops the motor assist and activates a rear disc brake, while the left one stops the treadmill itself, so you can go from motor assist to coasting.
The Lopifit first hit the streets in 2014 and, unsurprisingly, became an instant hit. That was actually quite challenging for the company, because it started getting inquiries and calls for orders, but it was nowhere near ready for mass production. The unique treadmill bicycle became available this year, and the Lopifit is struggling to keep up with demand, despite the high price tag of $2,115.
But despite having a very loyal fanbase of socalled Lopifitters, the ingenious means of transportation also has naysayers who simply consider the concept stupid and unnecessary. They basically believe that if you're going to walk, you might as well do it the old fashioned way. But the Lopifit does have the unique advantage of helping you “walk” really fast without breaking a sweat, or walking at cycling speed, if you will.

My grandfather Andy Anderson is 99. His life story is one for the big screen — he met my grandmother on a Saturday, and they married on the following Saturday. They stayed together until my grandma died 67 years later.
Without going to college, Andy worked his way to the top. He became the manager of the dairy department of Safeway. He earned the nickname Mr. Cheese, which eventually turned into Grandpa Cheese among the family. He has taught me a lot and here's what he has learned in his 99 years.
Always maintain a good sense of humor. Find something humorous in every single situation. Never be too good to start at the bottom. Exercise every day, even when you don't feel like it. Don't spend more money than you make. Save your money now and spend it later.
You must be able to forgive, even if it's difficult to do. Love is not always easy; sometimes you have to work at it. Your family is the most precious thing you will ever have in life.
If you're faced with a problem, don't delay trying to figure it out. But if there's no way to figure it out, you have to forget about it. Make sure you're doing what you love; don't be afraid to follow those dreams you have for yourself.
School education is important, but not necessary. Life can be an education in itself. Explore your world and stay curious; Having a bad job is better than having no job at all; Try not to take yourself so seriously. Don't ever be afraid to be your true self. Your life is delicate, and if you fail to take care of yourself properly, you'll spoil.
Life is a gift that you must unwrap (打开). It's up to you to determine if what's inside will lead you to happiness or dismay (沮丧). You have the power to make that
decision for yourself.
All of above come from Grandpa Cheese. If you're wondering what Grandpa Cheese is up to these days, he's riding his motorized scooter (踏板车) around Benicia, CA, and “planning on what I'm going to do when I start to get old,” he says.
