Being an Olympian (奥运会选手) demands focus, determination, and a competitive spirit. Plus, representing your country is a lot of pressure. However, two athletes recently showed the world another quality that is definitely worth championing.
Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi were competing in the high jump on Sunday when they reached a stalemate (僵局). Both men had managed to jump over a surprising 2.37 meters with no faults along the way. However, after three attempts neither managed the next level of 2.39 meters.
An Olympic official suggested ajump-offbetween the two friends and rivals (竞争对手) to determine who would get the gold medal. But Barshim had another plan to reward their efforts.
“Can we have two golds?” he asked the official.
The official agreed and the two men jumped for joy. This was the first time a gold medal had been shared since 1912. “He is one of my best friends, not only on the track, but outside the track. We work together. This is a dream come true.” shared Barshim.
The decision to share the medal was particularly meaningful to Tamberi. The Italian had suffered an ankle injury that prevented him from competing in the Rio Olympics in 2016, and it nearly put an end to his career altogether. So this year he brought along his cast to this year's Olympics with “Road to Tokyo 2021” to inspire him along the way.
For Barshim, the gold has topped off his already impressive medal collection, having received a bronze and a silver medal in 2012 and 2016 respectively.
Despite all the glory of receiving a gold medal for their countries, their achievement means so much more. These two individuals, trying to do their very best for their countries, have provided a wonderful example to all those competing in sports. They've summed up exactly what it means to take part in a global event with a generous and compassionate (有同情心的) spirit.
4. What happened to Barshim and Tamberi in the competition?
A. They ended in a tie.
B. They quit the competition.
C. They set a new record.
D. They ran out of strength.
5. What does the underlined word “jump-off” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Debate.
B. Vote.
C. Celebration.
D. Extra round.
6. Why was the gold medal particularly meaningful to Tamberi?
A. It could bring him a lot of money.
B. It may make up for his regret in 2016.
C. It was a glory for his country.
D. It could complete his medal collection.
7. What does the author mainly want to convey in the text?
A. The importance of sharing.
B. The glory of winning gold medals.
C. The valuable and special team spirit.
D. The considerate and sharing Olympic spirit.
C
Scott and Daniel Harry are enjoying everyday tasks like shopping and washing for the first time following their move to an accommodation (住宿) support house in Kurwongbah, north of Brisbane last year.
Disability Services Queensland’s Strengthening Non-Government Organisations project provided an accommodation support model that would enable residents (居住者) like Daniel and Scott to live more independently.
The house is just one of many accommodation support services funded (资助)through the project. The five-bedroom house provides 24-hour care for up to four individuals with complex needs, including medical support. Care and staffing levels are varied and flexible, depending on each resident’s requirements.
Scott and Daniel, who have a severe form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, require 24-hour support in all activities of daily living. Before they moved to the house, they lived with their family. Scott says living at home was difficult as it placed a physical and emotional strain(负担) on their parents who had to wake them several times each night to reposition them or place them on breathing machines.
“We were heavyhearted,” says Scott, who is planning to write a book about his life experiences. “But our parents now have a lot moretime for themselves. We now manage ourselves on a day-to-day basis.”
Daniel is an enthusiastic gardener, taking care of his own vegetable garden. The men share the house with one other young man, and they go to rugby league games, meeting up with friends.
Leeding Care Australia provides the care service at Kurwongbah. Manager Lee Garniss says setting up the
facilities (设施) has not been without its challenges.
“It is an unconventional model of care,” Lee says. “The home is Scott and Daniel’s home, however it is also a workplace for their support staff. Balancing these two requirements has been a challenge for all.”
“We have experienced a bit of a learning phase over the last twelve months. However, by working as a team we try our best to meet the needs of both residents and staff and I think we have achieved the right balance.”
8. What do we know about the house Scott and Daniel live in now?
A. It was built by their parents.
B. It can accommodate four residents.
C. It belongs to a governmental project.
D. It’s located in the center of Brisbane.
9. Why did Scott and Daniel’s parents wake up frequently at night?
A. To help them do exercise.
B. They were making a lot of noise.
C. To check on their breathing.
D. They were under emotional pressure.
10. How did Scott feel while living with his parents?
A. A bit guilty.
B. Quite happy.
C. Very proud.
D. Slightly angry.
11. What was a challenge while setting up the facilities?
A. Lack of fund.
B. No workplace.
C. Inexperienced staff members.

Preparations for the Tokyo Olympics have suffered another challenge after a survey found that 60% of people in Japan want them to be cancelled, less than three months before the Games are scheduled to open.
Japan has extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and several other regions until the end of May as it struggles to control a fast increase in COVID-19 cases caused by new, more catching variants(变异体)with medical staff warning that health services in some areas are on the edge of breaking down.
The Olympics, which were delayed by a year due to the pandemic, are set to open on 23 July, with the International Olympic Committee(IOC)and organizers insisting that measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of athletes and other visitors, as well as a nervous Japanese public.
The survey, conducted between 7 and 9 May by the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun, showed 60% wanted the Games cancelled as opposed to 39% who said they should be held. “Postponement” — an option abandoned by
the IOC — was not offered as a choice.
Of those who said the Olympics should go ahead, 23% said they should take place without audience. Foreign audience have been banned but a final decision on native attendance will be made in June.

The IOC's vice president, John Coates, said that while Japanese sentiment about the Games “was a concern”, he could foresee no situation under which the sporting events would not go ahead.
12. How many Japanese wish the Olympics would not be held in Tokyo according to the survey?

They speak loudly in public places, carve characters at tourist attractions, throw a rubbish everywhere, even cross the road when the traffic lights are still red. Such bad behavior had caused damage to what people think of themselves and our country. Actions should be taken to stop this. First, tourists should be educating to obey social and public order, and respect locally religions and customs. Besides, laws should be made to punish those don't behave politely in public.
