The standard measurement of MEC proposed by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) relies on the measured explosion pressure (P m) and the test results are strongly affected by the behaviors of dust cloud.In this paper, the influence of the behaviors of dust cloud was investigated in determining MEC for the standard measurement proposed by IEC based on the experiments and numerical analysis. The uncertainty to determine MEC by using P m was confirmed through the comparative analysis of MEC obtained under different test condition in the 20L Siwek chamber. Therefore, a new method by using the combustion duration time (t com) was proposed to measure MEC. The t com method was proved to have an inherent stability and make the test process simpler. Finally, the reliability of t com method was demonstrated.
