8A Unit2 Reading—School Lives
Distinguished judges, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon, today it’s my great honor to share my lesson plan with you. The content of my lesson is the reading part---school lives, which is taken from unit2, school life , in book fun with English 8A. Reading, as the main body of the whole unit, serves as the important resource of language input. The passage is about the school lives of America and British school, which is very closely related to their own school life, so it can easily arouse students’learning interest.
My target learners are grade 8 Ss who are quick in thinking and curious for exploration,so a variety of tasks should be designed to activate students’learning desire and exploration spirit. So based on the analysis of the teaching material and Ss, here comes my teaching objectives. The ultimate goal in teaching English is to develop Ss’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, for this lesson specifically, Ss should be able to:
1. Master words and expressions like mixed school,foreign language and so on.
2. Tell the differences between British school and American school life.
3. Love and cherish their school life.
During the whole class, I consider my teaching focuses are mastering new words and phrases to understand the text. And the teaching difficulty is how to use the knowledge they learnt to summarizing the passage by retelling.
For breaking through the teaching focuses and difficulties, I’d prefer to adopt the Task-based ,audio-visual and communicative teaching methods.
Now, let’s come to the teaching procedures including 5 steps, lead-in,pre-reading,while reading,post-reading and extension.
Step1, lead-in
At the beginning of the class,I’ll say:Boys and girls, there is an opportunity to be an exchange students in two foreign countries, (British school and America school)and before you make a choice, you’d better know something about this school life, what would you like to know about the school?” After the brainstorming,I will say:So today we are going to learning something about different school lives in a british school and an American school.Then I will write Different School Lives on the blackboard.(板书) In this way, brainstorming can not only arouse Ss’ interest in this lesson but also create lively atmosphere.
Step2:pre-reading
This step is aimed at leading out new words and prepare for the reading step.
I’ll say: Do boys and girls study together in our school? So we can say our school is a mixed school, right? We learn English at our school,Do you like it? English is a useful foreign language we have to learn. What about student’s in Britain and America?Is chinese a foreign language they have to learn?Now, let’s read the text to know something about them.
Step3, while-reading.
First, fast reading.I’ll say :In order to let you make a correct choice and decide which school you want to go,I ‘ll introduce my two new friends to you,they are from
these two different schools.Now reading the text quickly and tell me:Who are
they?(板书Nancy John)And do they like their school lives? 1 minute later, invite some Ss to give their answers and I’ll evaluate them .In this way,they can get the general idea of the passage.
Second, careful reading. I will say:Let our two new friends Jone and Nancy tell us something more about their school lives.Four minutes after reading,I’ll ask them to
fill in the table .The table is about the differences between American school life and British school life.Here I’ll write their different activities on the blackboard.This part,Ss can have a basic understanding.Here,they can check in pairs.
Task 3 Further reading
I’ll say:Our exchange students need to be very careful. Now let’s see if you have noticed these details. 5 T/F statements will be given to them to check their understanding of some difficult phrases and sentences. I will say:Now, read the text carefully within 3 minutes and judge whether the statements are true or false. (稍微停顿) 3 minutes later, I’ll say, time is up (边说边拍手示意). Now check your answers discuss in groups of four. If you don’t agree with each other, give your reasons. Then I’ll ask some of you to report your answers on behalf of your group. In this process, they can develop their individual learning, cooperative learning as well as team spirit.. Step 4, post-reading
I’ll say:since we have known something about different school lives in Britain and America,tell me if you are an exchange student,which school do you want to choose and why?you can use my blackbaord design as a consult.They can work in pairs to have a discussion.This session is designed to improve Ss’ summarizing ability and speaking skill. Also, it can promote the cooperation between Ss.
Step 5 Extension
Work with group members and make a report.
T: What is your ideal school like? Please work with your group members and make a report in front of the classroom. Those who do well will have another chance to win a star for your team!
This can help create a real-life situation for students to put out their language so as to develop their communicative competence as well as their awareness of cooperation and competition.
Finally,I’ll give them homework to Write a passage to introduce American school and British school to your friends.
This can help them to consolidate what we have learned today
