Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping to create an anti-malaria(疟疾) medicine. The 84-year-old’s route to the honour has been anything but traditional.
Tu Youyou attended a pharmacology school in Beijing. Shortly after, she became a researcher at the Academy of Chinese Traditional Medicine. In China, she is being called the "three noes" winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas.
In 1967, Communist leader Mao Zedong decided there was an urgent national need to find a cure for malaria. At the time, malaria spread by mosquitoes was killing Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of Mission 523. Researchers in Mission523pored over ancient books to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, over 240,000 compounds(化合物) around the world had already been tested, without any success.
Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood(青蒿), which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD. The team isolated one active compound inwormwood, artemisinin(青蒿素), which appeared to battle malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫). The team then tested extracts(提取物) of the compound but nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient
text. After another careful reading, she improved the drug recipe one final time, heating the extract without allowing it to reach boiling point.
After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu volunteered to be the first human rec ipient of the new drug. “As the head of the research group, I had the responsibility.” she explained.
Tu is consistently cited for her drive and passion. One former colleague, Fuming Liao describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubborn enough t o spend decades piecing together ancient texts and apply them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.
25. Which of the following words can best describe Tu Youyou?
A. Traditional and modest.
B. Passionate and responsible.
C. Lucky and knowledgeable.
D. Stubborn and flexible.
26. When did Ms. Tu start her malaria research?
A. When malaria become serious among Chinese citizens.
B. When she was enrolled into a pharmacology school in Beijing.
C. After she entered a secret government unit known as “Mission 523”.
D. After she became a researcher at the Academy of Chinese Traditional Medicine.
27. What can we learn about the discovery of anti-malaria drug?
A. Heating the extract until it reaches boiling point is necessary.
B. The process of testing extracts of the compound is very smooth.
C. No one had ever done any research on it before Tu and her team.
D. The idea of using wormwood to treat malaria was from ancient Chinese text.
28. The underli ned phrases “pore over” in paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A. go over
B. pay attention to
C. search for
D. think over

It’s generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay S5 for a caramel brulée latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.
It’s undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions (性情),but in
many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why would we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually,we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are.
Moreover, we don’t just use our behavior to learn about our pa rticular types of character, but infer characters that weren’t there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition.
Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do,though it may not be in compliance (符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegufs advice:“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
29. According to the passage, personalities and attitudes are commonly believed to __________.
A. determine one’s behavior
B. reflect one’s taste
C. influence one’s surroundings
D. result from one’s habits
30. Which of the following would Daryl Bern most probably agree with?
A. The return of a wallet can indicate one’s hones ty.
B. A kind person will offer his seat to the old.
C. One recycles plastics to protect the environment.
D. One buys latte out of true love of coffee.
31.What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the passage?
A. We fail to realize our inner dispositions.
B. We can be in fluenced by outside pressures.
C. Our behavior is the result of our true desires.
D. Our characters can shape our social relationships.
32. What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?
A. Personalities and attitudes.
B. Preferences and habits.
C. Behavior and personalities.
D. Attitudes and preferences.

Gravitational waves are the ripples(波纹) in the pond of spacetime. The gravity of large objects warps space and time, or “spacetime” as physicists call it, the way a bowling ball changes the shape of a trampoline(蹦床) as it rolls around on it. Smaller objects will move differently as a result — like marbles spiraling(盘旋) toward a bowling-ball-sized dent(凹迹) in a trampoline instead of sitting on a flat surface.
Scientists announced that they have succeeded in detecting gravitational waves from the violent merging(兼并) of two black holes in deep space. The detection was regarded as a victory for a controversial, delicately crafted, billion-dollar physics experiment and as confirmation of a key prediction of Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.
T here is no obvious, immediate consequence of this physics experiment, but the scientists say this opens a new window on the universe. Until now, astronomy has been almost exclusively a visual enterprise: Scientists have relied on light, visible and otherwise, to observe the cosmos.
But now gravitational waves can be used as well. They could potentially take a census of black-hole mergers, spot the collisions of ultra-dense neutron stars(中子星), probe the inner dynamics of exploding stars and discover theoretical “cosmic strings” left over from the big bang.
These waves will be particularly useful for studying black holes (the existence of which was first implied by Einste in’s theory) and other dark objects, because they’ll give scientists a bright beacon to search for even when objects don’t emit
actual light. Mapping the abundance of black holes and frequency of their mergers could get a lot easier.
Since they pass through matter without interacting with it, gravitational waves would come to Earth carrying undistorted information about their origin. They could also improve methods for estimating the distances to other galaxies.
It will also start a new era of astronomy in which gravitational waves are tools for studying the most mysterious and exotic objects in the universe.
33. According to the passage, which of the following is true about the experiment of gravitational waves?
A. It is a success and was approved of by all.
B. It is well designed though time and money consuming.
C. It proves that black holes do give out gravitational waves.
D. It proves one of the key predictions of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity right.
34. Why is gravitational waves important?
A. Because scientists have relied on light, visible and otherwise, to observe the cosmos.
B. Because they have been used to discover facts about the inner dynamics of exploding stars.
C. Because they could make it possible to probe objects in total darkness even when they don’t give out light.
D. Because mapping the abundance of black holes and frequency of their mergers could be impossible without them.
35. The underlined word “undistorted” in paragraph 6 probably mean _______
A. Unrelated.
B. Unfamiliar.
C. Unchanged.
D. Unreal.

When you’re packing for an adventure, what’s the most important thing you’ll need? ___36______ Or better yet, a GPS. What about other animals, how do they know
where they’re going?
While humans depend on technology to travel, some animals have something far more advanced. Researchers, mainly from Oregon State University, US, found that Chinook salmon (鲑鱼) have a “built-in GPS” of the Earth’s magnetic field. __37__ It acts like a big map inside their brain.
Scientists placed some baby salmon into a big swimming pool. To simulate (模拟) the Earth’s magnetic field, they put magnetic coils (线圈) all around the pool. Then, by changing the direction of the coils, the salmon began to change their own direction. They started to face in the direction of their ocean feeding area. __38__ When the scientists changed the coils to the opposite side, the salmon also turned in the opposite directi on. Just by using their “built-in GPS”, the salmon were able to figure out the direction of their feeding area.
__39__ The scientists believe that their navigation skills came through evolution. The fish that were able to reach the feeding area lived longer. __40__ So if you’re ever lost and in need of some help, maybe you should ask a salmon to point you in the right direction!
A. How did Chinook salmon get their “built-in GPS”?
B. If you don’t want to get lost, you’ll need a map!
C. This is a safe place in the ocean where salmon can find food to eat.
D. Then they could pass on their navigation skills to their babies.
E. However, the magnetic field is likely not the only tool salmon use to navigate.
F. It turns out young salmon don’t just learn quickly, they don’t need to learn at all.
G. This means as soon as they are born they are able to direct themselves in the ocean. 第三部分完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)
