Although in her short life, Austen only created six works, her effect in literary world has never changed. The theme of all her novels is love and marriage, and among all, Pride and Prejudice is the work that can best reflect Jane Austen’s views of marriage. Pride and Prejudice mainly focuses on the love and marriage of five girls from Bennet. The novel reflects the author’s views on love marriage: love, money, status and character. Marriage should be based on love and respect, and in addition, money provides the practical foundation for the stability of the marriage. Taking all of the factors into consideration, we can establish a happy marriage. This thesis aims at exploring Jane Austen’s marital views by analyzing the personality and marriages of the characters in the novel. It can be divided into three parts: the first part deals with the background of the society and Jane Austen’s life experience; the second part deals with the analysis of the main characters and their marriage with the aim of revealing the writer’s views on marriage; the last part focuses on the effect and inspiration from Jane Austen’s view on marriage. We can get the conclusion that marriage plays an important role in our lives, since it has a lot to do with our happiness. Choosing a suitable partner for marriage means a lot; therefore, love should be put on the first place. Jane Austen’s views of marriage give us much inspiration, it can also rouse female’s sense of independence and freedom.Key words: Pride and Prejudice; marriage; love; inspirationContentsAbstract (Chinese) (i)Abstract (English) (ii)Contents (iii)1.0 Introduction (1)2.0 The background of society and Jane Austen (2)3.0 Four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice................................. . Although she was unmarried the whole life, the theme of her novels were love and marriage, basically, the love and marriage between a gentleman and a fairy lady. Her best-known works are Emma (1815), Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Sense and Sensibility (1811).The novel talks about four different marriages: Collin and Challote’s marriage which is based on money; Lydia and Wickham’s marriage which is based on lust; Jane and Bingley’s marriage which is based on sense, Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage which is based on love. Which weighs the most in marriage, love, possession, or social status? Jane Austen has different attitude and description about the four marriages. The first sentence in this novel is impressive. It says: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not love but possession, but Jane Austen tells us a different story. The main story of this novel happens between Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet is a 20-year-old young lady. She is her father's favourite daughter and inherits his intelligence and wisdom. Darcy is a pride and kind gentleman with great fortune. Although, they were not attracted by each other at the very beginning, because they all have some complaints about the other, Elizabeth loathes Darcy’s arrogance, and she also has some misunderstandings on him, Darcy thinks Elizabeth is a very proud girl, and her families leave an awful impression on him. But at last, they fall in love and have a happy marriage. What changes their attitude towards each other? Because the pride and prejudice between them is long gone. They finally know each other deeply and accept each other. Their marriage is rooted in their love and respect. Comparing with other marriages in the story, Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is the perfect one. The story reflects the author’s marriage view: it is wrong to marry just for the possession, lust and position. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage that we should marry for love and emotion.Elizabeth and Darcy have a happy ending not only because of their love, but to some extent, Darcy’s property provides them the material need. From this we can see the author’s views: marriage is based on love, but property and position should be taken into account. In modern society, a lot of people marriage for money and social status, sometimes, it leads to a sad ending. I think, no matter when, Jane Austen’s views on marriage are of great value in leading us to the ideal marriage. My thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter deals with the background of the society and Jane Austen’s life experience, and how does those factors influence her writings; the second chapter reveal the authors views on marriage and the standard of the ideal marriage advocated by Jane Austen through analyzing the characters and their marriage in the story; the last chapter talks about the conditions of the modern marriage and how to found the ideal marriage from the inspiration of Jane Austen’s view on marriage.2.0 The background of the society and Jane AustenIn 18th and 19th centuries, the England society’s had serious social problems. One of the severest of these was the tendency to marry for money. A person sought a partner based on the dowry receivable and their allowance. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society. There was no equality between woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to be staying at home. Their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband. This process went both ways: a beautiful woman might be able to snag a rich husband, or a charring and handsome man could woo a rich young girl. In these marriages, money was the only consideration. Love was left out, with the thought that it would develop as the years went by. Jane Austen (December 16, 1775--July 18, 1817), an outstanding female novelist of British, was born in the village of Steventon, near Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Her father is the local vicar. She did not have the normal schooling, but she got good education from family's literature teaching. From the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century, “the sentiment novel” and “the gothic novel” were the themes of Englishliterature, while Austen made a different way. Most of her works were about romantic love. That might have something to do with her failure in marriage. Jane Austen was unmarried her whole life, but she had fallen in love with a young man. Their love was pure and faithful. However, this young man had to submit to the marriage that his aunt arranged for him, because he was under lots of burden from family. Then Jane broke up with him, since she did not want to stand in the way of the young man’s future, and a lso in her opinion, marriage should be based on love. She loved no one else after that. That is the reason why she was unmarried all her life. So she put all her feelings in creating romantic and happy marriages.3.0 Four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice3.1 Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriageOnce Mr. Qian Zhongshu has compared marriage to a castle, b ut I don’t think this marriage theory is suitable for Darcy and Elizabeth. The marriage is tortuous between them but deep-rooted of love based. As we all know, Elizabeth and Darcy left a quite bad impression on each other at the beginning. Elizabeth thinks Darcy is insolent and arrogant, and Darcy does not like Elizabeth because of Elizabeth’s social class and her indecent relatives. But Darcy finally rea lized Elizabeth's preciousness, and Elizabeth’s prejudice and misunderstandings towards Darcy are gone. They deeply in love and possess a wonderful marriage at last. Their love and marriage are tortuous and kind of mysterious. I will analysis their marriage start with analyzing the two characters.Elizabeth Bennet is a person who is worth our imitation. She is a model because she is different from the others. She does not adhere rigidly to the standards set forth by society, she is self-reliant and independent. She is wit and intelligent. Most of the girls married in pursuit of money and fame at that time, even her best friend Chalotte who married a rich man for changing her poor conditions. However, Elizabeth is not submit to this mood of society. She would never violate her principle and her integrity. She is like the pure lotus that lives in mud but never contaminated by the dirty. That is the reason why she rejects Mr. Collin's proposal, because she would not marry without love. On the other hand, she doesnot totally disregard social costumes. She has good manners; her slight breach of decorum is justified by walking alone to Nether field Park to visit her sister who is ill with her genuine concern. She has good manners. When Lady Catherine criticizes Elizabeth skill of playing piano, she can have good manners to keep polite. Mr. Darcy is pride on the surface, but we know he is warm-hearted. He is a good friend, he is afraid that Mr. Bingley would be cheated and hurt by Jane, although he is proved wrong later. He is a good brother; he takes care of his younger sister very well. He is kind; he helps Wickham and Lydia with money even though he was misunderstood by Elizabeth because of Wickham’s rumors. The two people’s personalities are clear and sharp. At the first time, Elizabeth and her sisters go to attend the ball held in Meryton, and she is coldly treated by Darcy, but she uses her healthy sense of humor to joke about Mr. Darcy’s rude behavior at the ball. Darcy is handsome, tall, and intelligent, but not convivial, his indifferent manners are seen by many as an excessive pride and concern for social status. He makes a poor impression on strangers, but he is valued by those who know him well. He gradually finds out Elizabeth’s intelligence, wisdom and beauty. He begins pursuing her. However, at the beginning, Elizabeth rejects his love expression, because she does not like him, even looks down on him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeth’s eyes, Darcy is arrogant and unreasonable because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly. Because of Darcy’s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the prejudice on Darcy. Most importantly, the misunderstanding, prejudice and pride are disappearing as they know each other better and better. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So Elizabeth accept Darcy’s proposal at the second time, then they get married and have happy family lives.3.2 Jane and Bingley’s marriageIn this novel, the combination of pleasant Bingley and mild Jane is one of the most blessed and happy marriages. The couple has similar interests and they insist on pursuing their true love which leads them to a happy and perfect marriage. Mr. Bingley was a handsome and gentleman with great fortune. As a young man who is well-bred, he wascordial and simple. With this character he never appeared dissatisfied. He is easy to get along and constant in love although he is extremely rich. However he is in short of strength and independence in his marriage which is a big weakness of him. In this story, Bingley is popular with almost everybody in everywhere. Jane is the oldest children in her family. She is an amiable and mild girl who possesses the most beautiful appearance among her sisters. As an introverted girl, she is faithful in love but lacks strength and self-confidence. She is too shy to profess her love towards Bingley, nor admit it, thought she has feelings for Bingley at the time they met. Sometimes she is a little innocent. In her eyes, everybody is nice. She never see through the rotten side of life even she is deceived. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. So it seems quite natural for Jane to fall in love with the pleasant and simple Bingley. They meet each other at the ball, they are attracted by each other at the first sight, and they dance and talk together. As times goes by, their feelings to each other are getting stronger. But Jane has no courage to express her love, she buries it in heart and for Bingley, he is not a strong and determined man. This is his advantage but also his disadvantage. His cordial and simple character causes his quiet romance with Jane. However, his weak and easily-led character causes his departure from Jane. He suddenly leaves Jane when their romance goes smoothly, which nearly put his pure love and marriage in end. To a great extent, Binley left Jane because of Darcy’s misunderstandings on Jane. They establish a steady and constant friendship although they have totally different characters. Darcy wants to help his friend. In his opinion, it is impossible for Jane to love Bingley. He thinks Jane love Bingley because Bingley is rich, but Bingley’s love for Jane is pure. He doesn’t want his best fri end get hurt. So he persuades Bingley to stay away from Jane and she is not a good marriage option. But they do love each other.During those days when Jane stays in London at Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner’s invitation, she visits Bingley’s sister in person in o rder to get some information of Mr. Bingley. At last, they get together after the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy disappears. So the love and marriage between Jane and Bingley is pure and stable. They fall in love at first sight heartily. Thei r marriage is kind of tortuous just like Elizabeth and Darcy’s, but the truelove won’t stop them from being together.3.3 Chalotte and Collin’s marriageCharlotte and Collins’s marriage is the most realistic one in the story. Their marriage is based on money instead of love. Charlotte is the best friend of Elizabeth, but they are very different in the choice of marriage. Chalotte’s parents, like the Bennet couple, can’t give her much fortune, and she is as sensible and intelligent as Elizabeth, but her pursuit for spiritual happiness is not as strong as that of Elizabeth. In addition, Chalotte is a plain girl who is a little bit prudent. As a woman who is 26 years old, her choice of marriage is entirely out of realistic consideration. When she first meets Collins, she sees his folly. When he asks her to marry him, she also clearly knows that Collins is certainly not a reasonable person. But she immediately says “yes”, because “Marriage has always been her aim, what kind of man she is going to marry as is less important”, marrying a rich man can shelter her from suffering poverty. She thinks money can bring her sense of security. William Collins, a man of 29 years old, is Mr. Bennet's distant relatives, since Mr. Bennet has no son; Collins becomes the he ir to Bennets’ estate. Jane Austen describes him as “not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little assisted by education or society”. Informed that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he switches his aim at the second daughter Elizabeth, but Elizabeth has no feelings for him, what’s more, Elizabeth gets tired of him. Eventually, she rejects him with sharp tongue. However, Collins quickly seeks comfort from Charlotte who is desperately in need of love from a male and believes marriage is the elegant way to save a poor girl from suffering, and then they get married as quickly as the lightning. Such marriage without love is too practical and realistic, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happiness.Marriage is just a task for them, but Collins couples get what they want from marriage: Charlotte gets the stability and prosperity of life; Collins also gets a warm home. This is how they understand marriage. There is no love and same interests between them; their marriage is based on benefits. Although they get what they want, marriage without love is not happy and stable.3.4 Lydia and Wickham’s marriageLydia, Bennett's third daughter, is a simple, frivolous, vanity girl. She is keen on social networking at an early age, enjoying contacting with Merry's officers, and even feels proud of it. “Whenever anyone urg es, she will be put into anyone's arms. Her feelings are always kept rolling, swing”. Wickham is a handsome, actual moral, luxurious, and treacherous man. At first, he seduces wealthy Miss Darcy, but his conspiracy fails. After joined the regiment, he first does everything to please Elizabeth, and then pursues wealthy Miss Kim, finally elopes with Lydia. Then, he gets into debt. So, he needs money and become rich and changes his social status through marriage. For his purpose, he seduces Lydia and wins her love easily, because she is young, innocent and frivolous, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and she is also spoiled by her mother. Getting love and praise from a man is what she dreams of. So when Wickham wants to reach his aim-getting wealth by loving and exalting her beauty hypocritically, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love is forbidden by the parents, and then they elope. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that he does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the condition of Darcy's help. Their marriage is considered as a scandal to Bennett’s f amily. But Mrs. Bennet is not shameful of this marriage. The marriage between Lydia and Wickham is conditional. Thanks to Darcy's help, they get married and continue their lives. This kind of marriage is doomed to be unstable. After marriage, they are extravagant; just enjoy the pleasure at the moment, never considering their future. They always ask Jane or Elizabeth for help, counting on their support to pay bills. Wickham's love for Lydia soon suffer a disastrous decline, finally he is indifference to Lydia. They get what they want: Lydia gets erotic satisfaction; Wickham, he also gets the wealth; but their marriage is not satisfactory. This is how they understand marriage.4.0 Analysis and understandings of the four marriages4.1 Perfect marriage based on true loveElizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is intricate but is the ideal marriage because their love is based on love, they cherish each other, they tolerate each other, and of course after marring Darcy who has great fortune, Elizabeth’s life and socia l status are improved, and their marriage gets material security, but at first, Elizabeth refuses the rich man- Mr. Collins’ proposal without any hesitation because she does not and will never love him, from Elizabeth’s perspective, marriage without love w ill never be happy. Elizabeth has a deep understanding of all the things around her. She has a clear understanding about her own social status. Because of this, she resists extremely against the arrogance of Darcy, and she tries to protect herself from being hurt by Darcy's insolent attitude. She believes that she must make him know that she is not woozy. The ultimate failure wakes Darcy up. He is aware of his own short-comings. He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corrects the shortcomings and mistakes. He is no longer arrogant and has a faithful love with Elizabeth. I remember when the sister asks Elizabeth how she would love Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she see the beautiful lane manor park. The statement seems to refer to the possession of Darcy. In addition to referring to the specific manor, she also refers the new Darcy seen in the garden.Elizabeth is a wise girl; she understands that marriage involves many factors, such as love, personality, status, property. Among all, love is essential to marriage, which is the author’s views on marriage that reflected in this novel. We should take marriage seriously; impulse will destroy someone’s happy marriage. Having a clear understanding about the person you are going to marriage is vital. Whether you can live a better life both physically and mentally is important to your marriage. That is to say, all the factors should be taken into consideration carefully. Those are the reasons why Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is the perfect one in the story.4.2 Happy marriage based on sense and similar interestsJane and Bingley’s marriage is also rooted in pure love, and also their concern for each other. It seems that their characters are quite suitable for each other. It seems that only their marriage involves purest love with no tint of money at all. Then why is not Bingley penniless but a “young man of large fortune”? This arrangement can also reflect author’s views on marriage. Love is essential for marriage, and money is also plays an important role in marriage. According to the relationship between Bingley and Jane love and similar interests are also the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. With many similarities in character people can understand each other easily. Above all, their understandings lead to helps and supporting between them. They can live happily together in this way. They don’t care about the shortcomings of their partners and even they don’t see any faults in each other. Just as the old saying going “Birds of a feather flock together people of a mind fill into the same group”.4.3 Pathetic marriage based on money or benefitsChalotte and Collins’s marriage is kind of beyond our expectations. At that time, a girl from the low class, who has no pretty appearance and good education, takes marriage as the only way to change their situations. Jane Austen objects this marriage that based on benefits. Maybe lots of people feel pity for the females who lived in that age, but in no time should we make such hasty decision about our marriage. Many do play an important role in marriage, but a marriage without love which is just based on money won’t be pleasant, at last, people will get hurt from the painful marriage. Once I read a story from a magazine, a girl from a poor family married a rich man, she almost did nothing rather than shopping and seeking pleasures, she squandered her husband’s money so quickly, later, the man got tired of her, they divorced. The woman lost the source of money, but she has gotten used to the luxurious life, she can’t live independently. At last, she tried to blackmail some rich man and ended in jail. This is a tragedy; girls should be independent and marry the person who really loves you just like you love him. So Chal otte and Collins’s marriage is doomed to beunhappy, Chalotte once said to Elizabeth, “I am not romantic, you know; I never was, I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins’ character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state.”(Pride and Prejudice, 144) Therefore, Charlotte seems to have found some kind of satisfaction and happiness in her marriage without any love. It is interesting that in such a marriage based on money-transaction, the woman from poor family does marry a single man with a good fortune, but the husband himself has nothing to do with the enjoyment the marriage bring to her.4.4 Absurd marriage based on lust and vanityThe combination of Lydia and Wickham is absurd. Her admiration to Wickham is entirely up to his “handsome face, comely shape and charming talk”. Their relationship is entirely built on lust and impulse without love foundation. Their marriage is neither practical nor romantic. Lydia and Wickham’s marriage is built on sex lust and impulse. It is kind of ridiculous. They treat their marriage so carelessly, it is impossible for them to get a happy marriage. Lydia is attracted by Wickham’s handsome sur face at first. As a flippant girl, she seeks sexual pleasure. Then they make a rash decision to get married. This marriage is one without love. They don’t understand the real meaning of marriage; they only want to satisfy their aspiration. So this is a kind of impromptu love and marriage without true love and responsibility.4.5 Jane Austen’s views on marriageAfter reading the novel, we can see that people’s views on marriage in England at that time. In the 18th century, women longed for marrying a gentleman who possessed considerable wealth and high social status. Love, seems count for nothing. This was because at that time, women were forbidden from inheriting the possession. Marring a rich man was their only way to live a decent life after their fat hers’ death. That is the reason why Mrs. Bonnet is crazy to marry her daughters off. However, Austen has her own idea. She also emphasizes love. From her perspective, happy marriage is equal to “love + wealth +equal social status”. Marriage should be based on love and trust. People can’t just marry someone for whom he/she has no feelings at all. Austen also points that wealth and social status put great importance on marriage. Austen casts her criticism to the dark fact that people’s attention is only on property and high social status. In Austen’s eyes, marriage without love is contemptuous. We know Elizabeth and Darcy, also Jane and Bingley, both have a happy marriage. From these two cases, we can find out what kind of marriage Jane Austen prefers--- love is basic; enough wealth, good behaviors and equal social status are all necessary. These two examples are exactly the right explanation of Austen’s outlook on marriage. To draw a conclusion, in the novel Pride and Prejudice, Austen casts her criticism to people who take wealth and high social states as the only factors in marriage, with neglecting love. She expresses her views on marriage that marriage should be built on love but at the same time should take wealth, characters and social status into consideration.I think Austen’s outlooks on marriage are well worth our deep consideration even today.5.0 The inspiration from Jane Austen’s views on marriageJane Austen’s views on marriage have a profound effect on lots of people, especially on females. What is marriage all about? I think it is a question that is worth our deliberation. Marriage is an everlasting topic in our lives. Throughout the literary history, many masterworks are about marriage. Everyone has his or her own understanding of it. Some marry for money, some for passion, some for love and so on. Marriage plays an important role in our life. Whether your marriage is happy or not will influence you a lot. Austen shows us a different view of marriage; also let us think that what kind of marriage we want and we suit. Many people try to find out the secret of marriage, because everyone wants to own a happy marriage. Some think that marriage contains all sorts of worldly things: house, money. To get marry is to get money; marriage is their shelters that helps them out of plight and keep them from poor or other sufferings. However, Austen shows us that marriage is built on love. It is wrong to marry for wealth or for the sake of beauty and passion of blind. Those kinds of marriage can't last long a nd we can’t get happiness. The truly happy marriage is based on love and reason. Jane Austen leaves us lots of inspirations, especially。

由于班内特家中无子,而当时法律规定只有男性可以继承财产,因此班内特家中的财产将由科林斯继承。
他向伊丽莎白求婚遭到拒绝,马上就向夏洛蒂求婚。

Pride and Prejudice mainly focuses on the love and marriage of five girls from Bennet. The novel reflects the author ' s views on love marriage: love, money, status and character.Marriage should be based on love and respect, and in addition, money provides the practical foundation for the stability of the marriage. Jane Austen ' s views of marriage give us much inspiration, it can also rouse female ' s sense of independence and freedom.Key words : Pride and Prejudice ; marriage; love; inspirationContentsAbstract(Chinese) ...................................................................... .iAbstract(En glish) ............................................................. .. Although she was unmarried the whole life, the theme of her novels were love and marriage, basically, the love and marriage between a gentleman and a fairy lady. Her best-known works are Emma1815), Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Sense and Sensibility (1811).The novel talks about four different marriages: Collin and Challote ' s marriage which is based on money; Lydia and Wickham s marriage which is based on lust; Jane and Bin gley ' s marriage which is based on sen se, Elizabeth and Darcy' s marriage which is basedon love. Which weighs the most in marriage, love, possessi on, or social status? Jane Auste n has differe nt attitude and descripti on about the four marriages. The first sentence in this no vel is impressive. It says: “ It is a truth uni versally ack no wledged that a sin glemanin possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. ” The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not love but possessi on, but Jane Auste n tells us a differe nt story. The main story of this no vel happe ns betwee n Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet is a 20-year-old young lady. She is her father's favourite daughter and in herits his in tellige nee and wisdom. Darcy is a pride and kind gentleman with great fortune. Although, they were not attracted by each other at the very beg inning, because they all have somecompla ints about the other, Elizabeth loathes Darcy' s arroganee, and she also has somemisunderstandings on him, Darcy thi nks Elizabeth is a very proud girl, and her families leave an awful impressi on on him. Butat last, they fall in love and have a happy marriage. What cha nges their attitude towards each other? Because the pride and prejudice betwee n them is long gone. They fin ally know each other deeply and accept each other. Their marriage is rooted in their love and respect.Comparing with other marriages in the story, Elizabeth and Darcy ' s marriageis the perfect one. The story reflects the author ' s marriage view: it is wrong to marry justfor the possessi on, I ust and positi on. She emphasizes theimportanee of the ideal marriage that we should marry for love and emotion.Elizabeth and Darcy have a happy ending not only because of their love, but to some extent, Darcy' s property provides them the material need. From this we can see the author ' s views: marriage is based on love, but property and positi on should be take n into acco un t. In moder n society, a lot of people marriage for money and social status, sometimes, it leads to a sad ending.I th ink, no matter whe n, Jane Auste n ' s views on marriage are of great valuein lead ing us to the ideal marriage. My thesis con sists of three chapters. The first chapter deals with thebackground of the society and Jane Austen ' s life experienee, and how does those factors in flue nee her writ in gs; the sec ond chapter reveal the authors views on marriage and the sta ndard of the ideal marriage advocated by Jane Auste n through an alyz ing the characters and their marriage in the story; the last chapter talks about the conditions of the modern marriage and howto found the ideal marriage from the inspiration of Jane Austen ' s view on marriage.2.0 The backgro und of the society and Jane Auste nIn 18th and 19th centuries, the England society ' s had serious social problems. One of the severest of these was the tendency to marry for mon ey.A pers on sought a part ner based on the dowry receivable and their allowa nee.In the 19 th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones inthe prese nt society. There was no equality betwee n woma n and man. Wome n wereconsidered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. Thecen tral life of wome n was forced to be stay ing at home. Their roles were todeal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband. This process went both ways: a beautiful womanmight be able to snag a rich husba nd, or a charri ng and han dsome man could woo a rich young girl. In these marriages, mon eywas the on ly con sideratio n. Love was left out, with the thought that it would develop as the years went by. Jane Austen(December 16, 1775--July 18, 1817), an outstanding female novelist of British, was born in the village of Steve nton, n ear Bas in gstoke, in Hampshire. Her father is the local vicar. She did not have the normal schooling, but she got good education from family's literature teaching. From the end of the 18thcen tury to the early 19th cen tury, “ the sen time nt no vel ” and “ the gothicnovel ” were the themes of English li terature, while Austen made a differentway. Most of her works were about roma ntic love. That might have someth ing to do with her failure in marriage. Jane Austen was unmarried her whole life, but she had fallen in love with a young man. Their love was pure and faithful. However, this young man had to submit to the marriage that his aunt arranged for him, because he was un der lots of burde n from family. Then Jane broke up with him, since she did not want to stand in the way of the young man s future, and also in her opinion, marriage should be based on love. She loved no one else after that. That is the reason why she was unmarried all her life. So she put all her feelings in creating romantic and happy marriages.3.0 Four differe nt marriages in Pride and Prejudice3.1Elizabeth and Darcy ' s marriageOnceMr. Qian Zhongshu has compared marriage to a castle, but I don' t think this marriage theory is suitable for Darcy and Elizabeth. The marriage is tortuous between them but deep-rooted of love based. As weall know, Elizabeth and Darcy left a quite bad impressi on on each other at the beg inning. Elizabeth thinks Darcy is in sole nt and arroga nt, and Darcy does not like Elizabeth because of Elizabeth ' s social class and her indecent relatives. But Darcy fin ally real ized Elizabeth's precious ness, and Elizabeth ' s prejudice and mis un dersta ndings towards Darcy are gone. They deeply in love and possess a won derful marriage at last. Their love and marriage are tortuous and kind of mysterious. I will analysis their marriage start with analyzing the two characters.Elizabeth Bennet is a person who is worth our imitation. She is a model because she is differe nt from the others. She does not adhere rigidly to the sta ndards set forth by society, she is self-relia nt and in depe ndent. She is wit and intelligent. Most of the girls married in pursuit of money and fame at that time, even her best friend Chalotte who married a rich manfor changing her poor conditions. However, Elizabeth is not submit to this moodof society. She would never violate her principle and her integrity. She is like the purelotus that lives in mudbut never contaminated by the dirty. That is the reason why she rejects Mr. Collin's proposal, because she would not marry without love. On the other hand, she does nottotally disregard social costumes. She has good manners; her slight breach of decorum isjustified by walking alone to Nether field Park to visit her sister who is ill with her genuine concern.Shehas good manners. WhenLady Catherine criticizes Elizabeth skill of playing pia no, she can have good manners to keep polite. Mr. Darcy is pride on the surface, but we know he is warm-hearted. He is a good frie nd, he is afraidthat Mr. Bin gley would be cheated and hurt by Jane, although he is proved wrong later. He is a good brother; he takes care of his youn ger sister very well.He is kind; he helps Wickham and Lydia with money even though he was misunderstood by Elizabeth because of Wickham ' s rumors. The two people ' s personalities are clear and sharp. At the first time, Elizabeth and her sistersgo to attend the ball held in Meryton, and she is coldly treated by Darcy, but she uses her healthy sense of humor to joke about Mr. Darcy' s rude behavior at the ball. Darcy is handsome, tall, and intelligent, but not convivial, his in differe nt manners are see n by many as an excessive pride and concern for social status. He makes a poor impressi on on stra ngers, but he is valued by those who know him well. He gradually finds out Elizabeth ' s intelligenee, wisdomand beauty. Hebegins pursuing her. However, at the beginning, Elizabeth rejects his love expressi on, because she does not like him, eve n looks dow n on him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeth ' s eyes, Darcy is arrogant and un reas on able because he is rich and has high social status. Realiz ing that, Darcy beg ins to get rid of those bad habits quietly. Because of Darcy' s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the prejudice on Darcy. Most importantly, the misunderstanding, prejudice and pride are disappearing as they knoweach other better and better. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So Elizabeth accept Darcy ' s proposal at the second time, thenthey get married and have happy family lives.3.2Jane and Bin gley ' s marriageIn this no vel, the comb in ati on of pleasa nt Bin gley and mild Jane is oneof the most blessed and happy marriages. The couple has similar interests and they insist onpursuing their true love which leads them to a happy and perfect marriage. Mr. Bin gley was a han dsome and gen tlema n with great fortune. As a young man who is well-bred, he was cordial and simple. With this character he never appeared dissatisfied. He is easy to get along and constant in love although he is extremely rich. However he is in short of strength andin depe ndence in his marriage which is a big weak ness of him .In this story, Bingley is popular with almost everybody in everywhere. Jane is the oldest children in her family. She is an amiable and mild girl who possesses the most beautiful appearanee amongher sisters. As an introverted girl, she is faithful in love but lacks stre ngth and self-c on fide nee. She is too shy to profess herlove towards Bin gley, nor admit it, thought she has feeli ngs for Bin gley atthe time they met. Sometimes she is a little innocent. In her eyes, everybody is ni ce. She n ever see through the rotte n side of life eve n she is deceived. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. So it seems quite natural for Jane to fall in love with the pleasant and simple Bingley. Theymeet each other at the ball, they are attracted by each other at the firstsight, and they dance and talk together. As times goes by, their feelings toeach other are getting stronger. But Jane has no courage to express her love, she buries it in heart and for Bingley, he is not a strong and determined man. This is his adva ntage but also his disadva ntage. His cordial and simple character causes his quiet romanee with Jane. However, his weak and easily-led character causes his departure from Jane. He sudde nly leaves Jane whe n their roma nee goes smoothly, which n early put his pure love and marriage in end.To a great extent, Binley left Jane because of Darcy ' s misunderstandings onJane. They establish a steady and con sta nt frie ndship although they have totally different characters. Darcy wants to help his friend. In his opinion, it is impossible for Jane to love Bin gley. He thi nks Jane love Bi ngley because Bin gley is rich, but Bin gley ' s love for Jane is pure. He does n ' t want hisbest frie nd get hurt. So he persuades Bin gley to stay away from Jane and she is not a good marriage option. But they do love each other.During those days when Jane stays in London at Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner ' s in vitati on, she visits Bin gley ' s sister in pers on in or der to get somein formatio n of Mr. Bin gley. At last, they get together after themisun dersta nding betwee n Elizabeth and Darcy disappears. So the love and marriage between Jane and Bingley is pure and stable. They fall in love at first sight heartily. Their marriage is kind of tortuous just like Elizabeth and Darcy ' s, but the true love won ' t stop them from being together.3.3Chalotte and Collin ' s marriageCharlotte and Colli ns ' s marriage is the most realistic one in the story . Their marriage is based on moneyin stead of love. Charlotte is the best frie nd of Elizabeth, but they are very different in the choice of marriage. Chalotte ' s parents, like the Bennet couple, can ' t give her much fortune, and she is as sen sible and in tellige nt as Elizabeth, but her pursuit forspiritual happ in ess is not as strong as that of Elizabeth. In additi on, Chalotte is a plaingirl who is a little bit prude nt. As a woma n who is 26 years old, her choice of marriage is entirely out of realistic consideration.Whe n she first meets Colli ns, she sees his folly. Whe n he asks her to marry him, she also clearly knows that Colli ns is certa inly not a reas on able pers on.But she immediately says “yes” , because “Marriage has always been her aim, what kind of man she is going to marry as i s less important ”,marrying a rich man can shelter her from sufferi ng poverty. She thi nks money can bring her sense of security. William Colli ns, a man of 29 years old, is Mr. Benn et's dista nt relatives, since Mr. Bennet has no son; Colli ns becomes the heir toBennets' estate. Jane Austen describes him as “not a sensible man, and thedeficie ncy of n ature had bee n but little assisted by educati on or society .In formed that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfrie nd, he switches his aim at the sec ond daughter Elizabeth, but Elizabeth has no feeli ngs for him, what' s more, Elizabeth gets tired of him. Eventually, she rejects him with sharp ton gue. However, Colli ns quickly seeks comfort fromCharlotte who is desperately in n eed of love from a male and believes marriage is the elega nt way to save a poor girl from sufferi ng, and the n they get married as quickly as the lightning. Such marriage without love is too practical and realistic, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happ in ess.Marriage is just a task for them, but Colli ns couples get what they want from marriage: Charlotte gets the stability and prosperity of life; Colli ns also gets a warm home. This is how they un dersta nd marriage. There is no loveand same in terests betwee n them; their marriage is based on ben efits. Althoughthey get what they want, marriage without love is not happy and stable.3.4Lydia and Wickham ' s marriageLydia, Benn ett's third daughter, is a simple, frivolous, vanity girl. She is kee n on social n etwork ing at an early age, enjoying con tact ing with Merry'sofficers, and even feels proud of it. “Whenever anyone urg es, she will beput in to anyon e's arms. Her feeli ngs are always kept rolli ng, swing ” . Wickhamis a han dsome, actual moral, luxurious, and treacherous man. At first, he seduces wealthy Miss Darcy, but his con spiracy fails. After joined the regime nt, he first does everyth ing to please Elizabeth, and the n pursues wealthy MissKim, fin ally elopes with Lydia. Then, he gets into debt. So, he n eeds money and becomerich and changes his social status through marriage. For his purpose, he seduces Lydia and wins her love easily, because she is young, innocent and frivolous, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and she is also spoiled by her mother. Gett ing love and praise from a man is what she dreams of. So whe n Wickham wan ts to reach his aim —gett ing wealth by lovi ng and exalt ing her beauty hypocritically, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love is forbidden by the parents, and then they elope. WhenElizabeth hears the news, she believes that he does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the con diti on of Darcy's help. Their marriage is con sidered as a sca ndal toBennett ' s fa mily. But Mrs. Bennet is not shameful of this marriage. The marriage betwee nLydia and Wickham is con diti on al. Wickham's love for Lydia soon suffer a disastrous decli ne, fin ally he is in differe nee to Lydia. They get what they want: Lydia gets erotic satisfaction; Wickham, he also getsthe wealth; but their marriage is not satisfactory. This is howthey understand marriage.4.0 An alysis and un dersta ndings of the four marriages4.1Perfect marriage based on true loveElizabeth and Darcy ' s marriage is intricate but is the ideal marriage because their love is based on love, they cherish each other, they tolerate each other, and of course after marring Darcy who has great fortune, Elizabeth ' s life and social status are improved, and their marriage gets material security, but at first, Elizabeth refuses the rich man- Mr. Colli ns ' proposal without any hesitation because she does not and will never love him, from Elizabeth ' s perspective, marriage without love wi ll never be happy. Elizabeth has a deep un dersta nding of all the things around her. She has a clear understanding about her own social status. Because of this, she resists extremely aga inst the arroga nee of Darcy, and she tries to protect herself from being hurt by Darcy's in sole nt attitude. She believes that she must make him know that she is not woozy. The ultimate failure wakes Darcy up. He is aware of his own short- comings. He accepts Elizabeth ' s criticism, and faithfully corrects the shortco mings and mistakes. He is no Ion ger arroga nt and has a faithful love with Elizabeth. I remember when the sister asksElizabeth how she would love Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she see the beautiful lane manor park. The statement seems to refer to the possession of Darcy. In addition to referring to the specific manor, she also refers the new Darcy seen in the garden.Elizabeth is a wise girl; she un dersta nds that marriage invo Ives many factors, such as love, personality, status, property. Among all, love is essential to marriage, which is the author ' s views on marriage that reflected in this no vel. We should take marriage seriously; impulse will destroy some one s happy marriage. Having a clear un dersta nding about the pers onyou are going to marriage is vital. Whether you can live a better life both physically and men tally is importa nt to your marriage. That is to say, allthe factors should be take n in to con siderati on carefully. Those are the reas ons why Elizabeth and Darcy ' s marriage is the perfect one in the story.4.2Happy marriage based on sense and similar in terestsJane and Bin gley ' s marriage is also rooted in pure love, and also theirconcern for each other. It seems that their characters are quite suitable for each other. It seems that only their marriage invo Ives purest love with notint of money at all. Then why is not Bin gley penn iless but a “ young man of large fortune ” ? This arrangement can also reflect author ' s views on marriage. Love is esse ntial for marriage, and money is also plays an importa nt role in marriage. Accord ing to the relati on ship betwee n Bin gley and Jane love and similar interests are also the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. With many similarities in character people can un dersta nd each other easily.Above all, their un dersta ndings lead to helps and support ing betwee n them. They can live happily together in this way. They don' t care about the shortcomings of their partners and even they don ' t see any faults in each other. Just as the old saying going “ Birds of a feather flock together people of a mi nd fill into the same group ” .4.3Pathetic marriage based on money or ben efitsChalotte and Colli ns ' s marriage is kind of bey ond our expectati ons. Atthat time, a girl from the low class, who has no pretty appearance and goodeducation, takes marriage as the only way to change their situations. JaneAuste n objects this marriage that based on ben efits. Maybelots of people feelpity for the females who lived in that age, but in no time should we makesuch hasty decisionabout our marriage. Manydo play an important role in marriage, but a marriage without love which is just based on money won ' t be pleasant, at last, people will get hurt from the painful marriage. Once I read a storyfrom a magaz ine, a girl from a poor family married a rich man, she almost didnothing rather than shopping and seeking pleasures, she squandered her husband' s money so quickly, later, the man got tired of her, they divorced. The woma n lost the source of mon ey, but she has gotte n used to the luxurious life, she can' t live independently. At last, she tried to blackmail somerich manand ended in jail. This is a tragedy; girls should be independent and marry the person who really loves you just like you love him. So Chalotte andColli ns ' s marriage is doomedto be un happy, Chalotte once said to Elizabeth ,“ I am not romantic, you know; I never was, I ask only a comfortable home;and con sideri ng Mr. Colli ns ' character, conn ecti ons, and situati on in life,I am convin ced that my cha nee of happ in ess with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state. ” (Pride and Prejudice , 144) Therefore, Charlotte seems to have found some kind of satisfaction andhapp in ess in her marriage without any love. It is in terest ing that in sucha marriage based on mon ey-tra nsacti on, the woma n from poor family does marrya single man with a good fortune, but the husband himself has nothing to dowith the enjoyment the marriage bring to her.4.4Absurd marriage based on lust and vanityThe comb in ati on of Lydia and Wickhamis absurd. Her admiratio n to Wickham is entirely up to his “ handsomeface, comely shape and charming talk ” . Their relatio nship is en tirely built on lust and impulse without love foun dati on.Their marriage is neither practical nor romantic. Lydia and Wickham smarriage is built on sex lust and impulse. It is kind of ridiculous. They treat their marriage so carelessly, it is impossible for them to get a happy marriage. Lydia is attracted by Wickham s handsomesurf ace at first. As a flippant girl, she seeks sexual pleasure. Then they make a rashdecision to get married. This marriage is one without love. They don ' t understand the real meaning of marriage; they only want to satisfy their aspiration. So this is a kind of impromptu love and marriage without true love and responsibility.4.5Jane Austen ' s views on marriageAfter reading the novel, we can see that people ' s views on marriage inEn gla nd at that time. In the 18th ce ntury, women on ged for marrying a gen tlema n who possessed con siderable wealth and high social status. Love, seems count for nothing. This was because at that time, women were forbidden from in heriti ng the possessi on. Marring a rich man was their only way to live a decent life after their fath ers ' death. That is the reason why Mrs. Bonnetis crazy to marry her daughters off. However, Austen has her own idea. She also emphasizes love. From her perspective, happy marriage is equal to “ love + wealth + equal social status ” . Marriage should be based on love and trust. People can' t just marry someonefo r whomhe/she has no feelings at all. Austen also points that wealth and social status put great importa nee on marriage.Austen casts her criticism to the dark fact that people ' s attention is onlyon pr operty and high social status. In Austen ' s eyes, marriage without loveis con temptuous. Weknow Elizabeth and Darcy, also Jane and Bin gley, both have a happy marriage. From these two cases, we can find out what kind of marriage Jane Auste n prefers--- love is basic; eno ugh wealth, good behaviors and equalsocial status are all n ecessary. These two examples are exactly the right explanation of Austen' s outlook on marriage. T o draw a conclusion, in thenovel Pride and Prejudice , Austen casts her criticism to people who take wealth and high social states as the only factors in marriage, with neglecting love. She expresses her views on marriage that marriage should be built on love but at the same time should take wealth, characters and social status intocon side ratio n. I thi nk Auste n' s outlooks on marriage are well worth our deepcon siderati on eve n today.。

英语论文-范本《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度(英文)
英语论文-范本《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度(英文)The Attitude of Marriage in Pride and Prejudice: What Has Affected the Choice of Marriage?《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度什么影响了婚姻选择?1“This is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”(Jane Austen, 2021:1) This sentence was stem from the English woman novelist Jane Austen, which was the typical of her masterpiece .Thus it brings out a classic story concerning love and marriage, which took place in England at the beginning of the 19th century.Marriage is a topic that never ends; it has gone through for a long time. However, it is still stared by the public without hesitation. The marriage and human being are closely related, but few people can place themselvesoutside .However, person is different from each other. It is for this reason, everyone has a different marriage. Many anthropologists and sociologists keep on research in this field. Many writers also describe the marriage in their own works. Pride and Prejudice, this famous novel, also presents it to us the different marriages, leaving us to think about the marriage.I. The Summary of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice can be divided into three parts; the main story is unfolded by the Bennet’s family. On the dancing party, a beautiful girl Jane who has a long hair, beautiful figure shows her dignity and wins the heart of Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennet is bloated and is laughed by Mr. Bingley. While Mr. Darcy is arrogant, in his opinion that on the whole party, expect for the Bingley Sister, dance with other woman all is to suffer mental agony .This lets everyone dislike him very much. Accidentally, Elizabeth hears about Darcy's discussion a bout her. “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.” (Jane Austen, 2021:12) So she decides to leave Darcy alone.Jane goes and has a chance to visit to Bingley's family, but she is sick because of the raining in the half way, it is impossible to go home. Because of the deep sensibility between sister, Elizabeth visits to her on foot. Jane will be not willing to let her go, Elizabeth settles down. However, Darcy has attacked by the alive and clever Elizabeth. When handsome military officer Wickham shows up, everyone is attacked by him,2Elizabeth has not exception. Because of the mistake between Elizabeth and Darcy, Elizabeth believes in Wickham's words without hesitation. At this time, Collins who is the Bennet family's prospector inheritor shows up in their daily life. With the help of the Darcy’s aunt, he gets a profession as a priest and satisfied with his situation. For this reason, he decides to marry a lady to compensate the losses the sisters have suffered for his inherit of their property. At first, he in favor of Jane, after taking the hind from Mrs. Bennet, he makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth, but he is refused. At last, he makes a proposal to Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte successfully. At the beginning of winter and his friends leave without saying goodbye, this makes Mrs. Bennet and Jane disappoints. Jane receives a letter from Miss. Bingley; which says in the letter that Darcy's sister and Mr. Bingley find each other are suitable. Jane is unhappy. This makes Darcy to realize that Elizabeth still love him.At the end,Elizabeth and Darcy, as well as Jane and Bingley live happily,While Mrs. Bennet is well to proud to marry three daughters.II. The Background of Pride and PrejudiceA. The Author of This NovelFrom my standpoint, a good grasp of the career of the author was a must to fully understanding a work. Jane Austin (1775-1817), the author of the novel Pride and Prejudice, was born in Steventon of Hampshire, where her father wasa rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family. Herfather and brothers once educated in Oxford. As a result, her family took possession of a big collection of books. She was well tutored at home underthe guidance of her brothers when she was very young. As3Jane Austin put it in Pride and Prejudice: \all the masters that were necessary.\Austen, 2021: 205) In addition to study, she could be seen in a variety of social intercourse. She kept observing and thinking in a world composed of familial and bourgeoisie background. Not only was she acclimatedto such style of life, she was also familiar with and fond of it as well. She considered it to be complete, animated and with the beauty of poem. Thereputed Charlotte Bront once remarked: “I would not li ke to stay in her small house with gentlemen and gentlewomen of her.”①(刘洪涛,2021:169) This seemed to have become a typical criticism. Jane Austin was not as narrow as that, in fact, she did enjoy the bourgeoisie life and never regarded it to be narrow. Conversely, she was longing to draw a picture of it literally and toair the feeling and understanding of her own, as a result of which sheachieved the masterpiece that Maugham considered to be perfect. Jane Austin's work was primarily concerned with the marriages and romance between man and woman, but the author herself who arranged marriages for the protagonists in novels never got married. Perhaps it was writing that she was enamored of. She started to write when she was young. She made the best of her time atbreakfast in writing from Miss. Sun and Love and Friendliness and gradually finished the first scripts and repeatedly revised. Sense and sensibility was finished in 1795, pride and prejudice in 1796 and Northanger Abbey in 1798.She was obscure at that and failed to find any press to publish her novels. In1809, Jane Austin’s family moved to Bath where she completed Mansfield Parkin 1812, Emma in 1814 and Persuasion in 1816. The works sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice during the early stage of writing came to be brought out since 1811 and Emma published in 1816 received a wide range of praise. Jane Austin became a famous writer afterwards. Much to our sorrow, when she had the opportunity to begin life anew, her health began deteriorating and died in July eight, 1817. Mansfield Park and Persuasion were published in the second year of her death. If Jane Austin lived a little longer, the reputation of her novels brought her could encourage her to produce more sterling works. In her times, with the advent of French Revolution and Industrialization, the development of capitalism hit a new hit. Conversely, she did not depict the great changes taking place in her times, but rather percepted and felt from the internal part of the bourgeoisie life, and on her close examination of the marriages, she tried to build ethic ties of honesty and harmony inside the changing class. Pride and prejudice is such kind of novel that is still popular nowadays. The literary criticism William Somerset Maugham even ranks it top ten of the most popular novels in the world. ①(牛庸懋蒋连杰,1986:123-124)B. The Social BackgroundNot only do we need to be well informed of a writer, more importantly, we should know the social background. Novels stem from life and go above life. To learn the social background can help us to understand better the genuine reason purposes of writers. Human entered into the period of paternity since Zeus created the huge scale of kinship. Through orthodox, order and various restrictions, paternal culture reduced women to inferior creature. Women's status was very low even in 18th and 19th centuries. Men snatched the control of economy, politics and ideology and they considered women as inferior animals and repulsed them overtly. ①(杨莉馨,从《傲慢与偏见》的结构谈简・奥斯丁的女性意识) The society with Jane Austin lived in witnessed a climax of the development4of capitalism, but the feudalism was still powerful, equality between men and women was still out of reach, especially in the distribution of inheritance, men enjoyed priority. The order of the division of the property went this: from male (a lineal consanguinity) to male (a collateralconsanguinity), and than to the female. ①(陈棠,理性的光芒---傲慢与偏见与简奥斯丁的婚姻道德观) So the ownership of the female property would see it destiny in the end. The novel Pride and Prejudice also mentioned: if one family did not have a male inheritor, their property would be only inherited by another male in the family; the only possibility for the female was to depend on this male inheritor. If the inheritor did not take them seriously, they would only wonder around the street. For this reason, finding a shelter for themselves without worrying about foot and clothes was of importance. It was in this type of social environment that brought up the truth that we have mentioned at the beginning of the passage. It was just for this piece of truth that provided the women hope and the object they were fighting for. At the same time, author advantaged of the marriage provided for the woman was that it could improve their economic and social status. After understanding the social background at time , definite the priority the female had in the property inherited and realized that the only way for the female as a social garniture was to get married , then it was easy to understand that Mrs. Bennet strongly desired to marry her daughters and the purpose of Elizabeth’s friend’s marriage as well as Mr. Darcy’s behavior to break up the affection between Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet and Darcy’s aunt’s behavior t o opposite the affection between Darcy and Elizabeth. All of those became reasonable and logical.III. The Five Marriages in This NovelWhen knows the author and the society background, let’s look at the marriage in this novel. In Pride and Prejudice, there are five marriages. They are Bennets’ marriage, marriage of Jane and Bingley, marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, marriage of Lydia and Wickham, marriage of Charlotte and Collins. We often say: “All happy families resemble one another; each unhappy family is its own way.” (托尔斯泰 2021:1) The persons are differences too. So every marriage has its own feature. When we begin to analyze these marriages, we can find out that the present social environment is not only factor that influences the marriages. As it is known to us, for the children, the family environment is more important than social environment. It maybe influences many aspects of children. But the main factor is the parents. Because parents are the first teachers for children, every word and behavior maybe affectstheir children. In this novel, we should analyze the Bennets’ marriage before we see other marriages.A. Bennet’s MarriageThere do not have the intuitional depiction about Bennet’s marriage. But what do children see and the dialogues between Bennets show us the unhappy marriage. Everyone knows that the foundation of the marriage is to understand each other. However Mr. Bennet is so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of the three and twenty years has been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. The husband and wife should have the equal levels which is another basic condition of the marriage. In this novel, Mrs. Bennet is a woman of mean5感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。

The four marriages in the novel completely summarize people’s attitude towards the love and marriage at 18th century’s society situation. Through the discussion of the different marriages and love, the writer demonstrates her concept about love and marriage: love and marriage is closely associated with property and society, however, love and marriage cannot only be decided by the property and social status. An ideal marriage should be based on mutual affection and respect. Love is the root of a happy marriage. She rejects the marriage based on wealth and stresses the element of emotion in a marriage.Key Words:Love; marriage; property; social statusMarriage in Pride and PrejudiceⅠ.IntroductionThis novel takes young people’s marriage as the thread and it covers the inheritance of fortune, women’s social status, ethics and customs. Being the masterpiece of Jane Austen, it comes to the extensive favor of literary lovers and experts at the same time. This paper makes an analysis of four marriages in pride and prejudice and discusses the deep outlook for their love and marriage in the light of social background at the time.Ⅱ.Four Marriages in Pride and PrejudiceA. Collins and Charlotte’s MarriageCharlotte is Elizabet h·Bennetts’ neighbor, and her family’s situation was not very well . In addition, Charlotte is a mediocre intelligence girl, so she was still not married at the age of 26.Mrs. Bennett could not give birth to a boy; instead, she had given birth to five girls. Due to the special inherent law, the father's heritage cannot be inherited by his 5 daughters, but his nephew Collins could inherit. So, Mrs. Bennett put all her expectation on CollinsWith Mrs. Lindberg's help, Collins became a priest smoothly. Then he came to his uncle's house, and wanted to become Bennett's son-in-law. He thought that used this way he could make up his cousins in some degree. He stayed at his uncle’s house for a long time. When he knew the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he just turned his attention to the second daughter Elizabeth. She refuses him with a sharp tongue. But Collins quickly finds comfort from Charlotte who desires to get love froma male and believes marriage is the elegant way for a girl with some education, and then they get married as quickly as the lightning. A mediocre love, a dull marriage has been established effortlessly. Such marriage without love is too practical, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happiness.B.Lydia and Wickham’s MarriageWickham is the son of the Darcy’s housekeeper. At the beginning, the master treated him very well but he was a man without any responsibility and was in debts. He also spoken ill of Darcy everywhere. His marriage is to open the source of wealth, for this purpose, he was prepared to use unscrupulous divisive tactics with Darcy's sister Georgiana to elope. Fortunately, Darcy stopped it in time. He once won Elizabeth's favor, but when Elizabeth left home to Charlotte home for a period of time, he was immediately ready to get married with another lady who was not beautiful but wealthy. But he failed. Later, Elizabeth's sister Lydia had a blind affection on him, and eloped with him. Finally,in Darcy’s funding he promised to marry Lydia.Their marriage was Bennett’s scandalC. Jane and Mr. Bingley’s MarriageBingley is a friend of Darcy. Bingley’s sister loves Darcy very much. She wants Bingley to get marr ied with Darcy’s sister Georgiana, because she wants to get love from Darcy by this way, which also reflects the selfishness the sister. The marriage of the able man- Bingley and the beautiful girl-Jane is ideal in most people’s eyes. Of course, the couple meets many setbacks, such as the misunderstanding of Darcy and Bingley's selfish sister. At last, the lovers get married as the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy has been solved.D. Darcy and Elizabeth’s MarriageAt the beginning, Elizabeth rejected Darcy’s pursuit, because she does not like him, even looks down upon him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeth’s eyes, he is arrogant and unreasonable because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly to crate her taste and get good impression and love of her. Because of Darcy’s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the bias on Darcy. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So when Darcy’s second s uitor is sent to Elizabeth, Elizabeth readily agree with, and they get married and have happy family lives.III. The Different Understanding about Marriage in Pride and Prejudice.A.The Marriage Based on Money or BenefitCharlotte knew that the marriage withou t property would eventually move toward disappointment and suffering. Even if the couple loves each other deeply at first, when Collins, known as a social climber, is rejected by Elizabeth, he immediately turns to fall in love with Miss Charlotte. Although Collins is an inborn fool, his love could not move the heart of a woman, charlotte accepts him, because her purpose is to get married. Almost all the girls born in a family without good education always regard marriage as the decent way, although marriage might not necessarily bring happiness to them. She manages to arrange one of the most reliable way by marriage, thus she would not be exposed to the cold temperatures and suffer hunger in the future. She now gets a storage room.Charlotte is like a roadman catching a plump fish—Collins. But if he doesn’t meet a setback from Elizabeth, and the encouragement of charlotte, I am afraid that he would not be so willing to propose marriage to Charlotte. The man like Bentley who has fairly numerable money need a beautiful wife, the poor man needs a wife with a huge wealth, like Wickham; it was lucky for Charlotte that she could gain the marriage with Collins although their marriage is not happy at all.B.The Marriage Based on Sense and SensibilitySense and sensibility is the footing stone of a happy marriage.Elizabeth and Darcy's marriage is the most successful and perfect ideal marriage in Pride and Prejudice. Their combination is really built based on love. The combination of them proves that sense and sensibility is necessary for a happy marriage. From 16th to 18th Century, while criteria of choosing spouse in English upper-and-middle class from 16th to18th century emphasized equal, but they did not deny love and affection are the prerequisite for marriage. Elizabeth did not have the same beauty with Jane, but she was clever and sensible, lively and lovely. She is rich in personality and connotation. Elizabeth knew that in society people like connect marriage with wealth and social status but she did not lose herself. Instead she chose to continue pursue her love bravely. It was her unusual style of conversation and noble sentiments attracted Darcy and then let Darcy full love on her. Love is unconditional, just when the thing person depends on people’s feeling. But marriage is different from love, marriage must have the material basis and economic basis. Marriage is inevitable for people's survival and development, and it must consider many factors. A happy marriage is the inevitable result of a emotional and rational balance, and the unity of substance and spirit.Ⅳ. ConclusionBy description and discussion of the four marriages in the novel, we can learn that middle-class women have different attitudes towards love and marriage. This novel also like a mirror, it shows the real society at that time, which also reflects the author's views on marriage: Marriage is often restricted by the character, property and family level factors. but she also stressed both men and women’s feeling is the cornerstone of an ideal marriage. It is wrong to get married for property, money and status. In addition, it was foolish not to consider these factors.Bibliography:[1]Sampson George, The Concise Cambridge History of English Literature, Cambridge University, 1988[2] 常耀信.
Marriage in Pride and Prejudice
Marriage in Pride and PrejudiceMain meaning:“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a g ood fortune must be in want of a wife.” The first sentence of this book points out one of the important factors affecting the marriage of money, however, is really a truth? We compare the marriage in the novel; we will have our own judgment.Key words: five marriage, reasons, the meaning for the real life2.1 The old Bennet coupleMrs. Bennet is very beauty in the young. Considering Mr. Bennet’ year incom e, can let herself live in a comfortable life, she took a small portion married t o Mr Bennet. After marriage, the business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news. Mr. Bennet is smart, humorous and funny, all addicted to reading. Soon after his marriage, he found that the mar riage built on the beauty was not happy, and he looked down upon the ignora nt wife, Often ridicule, in a joking voice about her. Obviously, Bennet couples have no common language in character and hobbies and other aspects; just to keep the status for this economic marriage.2.2 Lydia and WickhamLydia Bennet's little daughter, she inherited her mother's beauty; she is in a s mall age into the social world. But she also inherited his mother's ignorance a nd vanity. Although only 15 years old, she has always dreamed of romance, o ften flirt with the officer. It is because such sexual impulse, she met officer W ickham, instantly indicted by his handsome appearance and pretended gentle. A nd also use a variety of ways to attract him, put all of the code of ethics and women's modesty aside, wanted to elope with him. Wickham is a rogue and a hypocrite; he wants to to build up the family fortunes through marriage, For the money, he was secretly planning to bring Darcy younger sister to elope, a lso in after the failure of the courtship of Elizabeth soon turn to the pursuit ofa girl. He finally agreed to marry Lydia because of Darcy repay gambling de bts and gave him a considerable income.2.3 Jane and BingleyJane Is Bennet's eldest daughter, she was in all aspects of the requirements of ladies:Beautiful and kind-hearted, pure, elegant and cute.It is this made her l ady style, lack of confidence; weak and mercy character.Though she fell in lo ve with Bentley at first sight, she did not show it at first sight. She has the o pportunity to continue to develop, and then contact with Bentley, but thanks to Mrs. Bennet painstakingly arranged for her to ride to Bentley home alone in the rain weather. In the later mistakenly believe Bentley is no longer love hers elf, and want to leave Netherfield and never come back, she would just get di sheartened, never to fight for her happiness. When he moves to there, Bentley became the town's gold bachelors. He was gentleman, refined and cultured, han dsome and highly esteemed and easy-going.But he and Jane has the same per sonality: weakness, lack of confidence, no opinion. When family and friends q uestioned, criticized Jane home vulgar words and deeds, he chose to give up t he opportunity for love.Fortunately, with Darcy and Elizabeth's help, the two people love each other forever.2.4 Collins and CharlotteIn Pride and Prejudice, when the homely and plain Charlotte decided to marry Collins, Her reflections were in general satifactory, without thinking highy eith er of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the o nly honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune. In f act what Charlotte asks is only a comfortable shatter, a higher social position and a better wealth. Which she explains to Elizabeth, “I am not romantic, you know. I never was. I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Colli ns character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair, as most people can boast on entering the m arriage state.” For Collins, he is a man who does not know what love is at al l. When Mr. Collins first proposed to Elizabeth, much to her mother's displeasure and her father's joy she firmly and promptly rejected him. He almost imm ediately transferred his affections to Elizabeth's best friend, Charlotte Lucas, wh o, twenty-seven and somewhat homely, accepted at once his offer of marriage. Collins’ decision to marry Charlotte is only because of Elizabeth’s refusal to hi m. What he needs is just a wife who helps him not to be a single man any more.2.5 Darcy and ElizabethElizabeth's love is very important. At the beginning, Elizabeth refused to acc ept Darcy pursue. Because in Elizabeth's eyes, Darcy is very cold and extre mely proud, he is rich and has high social status, and he look down upon t he middle-classe girls. In particular, he insulted Elizabeth Bennet, He refused to dance with her when she was sitting down for lack of a partner, and sa id in her hearing that he was in no to prefer young ladies slighted by other men. But on future occasions, however, Darcy began to admire Elizabeth in spite of himself. At a later ball Elizabeth had the satisfaction of refusing hi m a dance. Bingley's sister Caroline, who was eager to marry Darcy and shr ewdly aware of his growing admiration for Elizabeth, was especially loud in her ridicule of the Bennet ter, Elizabeth herself became Caroline's particular target. Darcy admitted to himself that he would be in some danger from the charm of Elizabeth, if it were not for her interior family connecti ons. Finally, Elizabeth changed her impression of Darcy, He returned to Net herfield Park, they fell in love with each other and became engaged. They ha ve an happy life. The reasons for the view of marriage:Social reasons;Personal reasons. In eighteenth Century, the industrial revolution led to the rapid development of economy, it changes people's life and economic situation in the country.Co mprehensive changing people's traditional customs, value orientation and empl oyment standards. For women, to enter the upper class, there are only two ways: either gets an inheritance or to marry a rich husband; Thus created th e secular view of marriage;Jane Austen was born in an ordinary town in Britain, although born in educated families,However, there are some people s aid that she did not step out of the narrow world around her, in some aspec ts of life are limitated. The meaning of these views of marriage on real life:We followed Austen's id eas to experience five different marriages one by one, it also Let us recogni zed the marriage is influenced by many factors: family property, conception, individuality etc..It is wrong to get married for property and status;happy marriage must be built on the basis of love, marriage without love, no matte r how rich, no matter how apparently ideal, both sides will not make marria ge happiness the true meaning of marriage.Bibliography[1] Austen,Jane. Through the discussion of the different marriages, she perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. Moreover, she portrayed some reasons for the different marriage concept held by people at that time, in which the low social status of women is the most striking one. Austin thinks that marriage merely for property, money and status is absolutely wrong, but marriage without economic factors is silly. In a word, she is against the marriage for money. She regards love between two people as the basis of an ideal marriage, which breaks the traditional marriage concept and influences people’s idea of marriage nowadays.Key words: Pride and Prejudice; marriage; loveI.Introduction“Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. Her six novels---Sense and Sensibility, Pride andPrejudice, Northanger Abbey, Manshifeierde Manor, Emma, Persuasion all describe more than marriage.” (Wang Shouren, 2005, 64) However, her marriage is like a blank paper in her 42 years real lifetime. Going through the finest time, but eventually without meeting a comfortable partner, she gives up her love. Going through the sweet and bitter feeling which helps her to write the great work Pride and Prejudice.“At that time, according to the social conditions in Britain, a good marriage for a young woman was critical. This phenomenon was closely associated with the British society and the status of women in the society. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society. There was no equality between woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to stay at home, their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband.”(Zhu Hong, 1997, 34)People naturally thought that women should be submissive to their husbands. The virtues of women were patient and deferent. They must recognize their inherent inferiority to men, so they must restrict their abilities without conditions. Although the status of women was low, few of them expressed dissatisfaction about their own destiny. At that time, many middle-class young women had three solutions: getting married; staying at home as old maids or working as the family female teachers. The income of family female teacher was very low, and the status was low as well. It was very difficult for them to change or swap out of this status, no one would like to be a maid forever, therefore, in terms of young women, especially those who don’t have enough properties, to get married was the only way for them to gain respect, stability and social status. This idea forms the basis of women’s marriage concept at that time. This novel takes young people’s marriage as the thread and it covers the inheritance of fortune, women’s social status, ethics and customs. Being the masterpiece of Jane Austen, it comes to the extensive favor of literary lovers and experts at the same time. This paper makes an analysis of four marriages in Pride and Prejudice and discusses the influence of Austin’s marriage concept on present marriage.II. Four Marriages in Pride and Prejudice1. Collins and Charlotte’s marriage---marriage based on money or benefitThe first part of Pride and Prejudice tells the marriage of Charlotte and Collins, which is lucky and natural. They get married without any expectation. Charlotte is William Lucas’s daughter, who is the neighbor of Lizzy Bennett. She was born of humble parentage and very mediocre in every aspect. So she has not got married even until she is 26 years old. She may be a typical questionable girl. However, there are 5 daughters in the Bennetts, the five daughters are gradually growing up to the age for marriage. So both of the two families rival mutually, especially in the eyes of the vulgar women, such rivalry was particularly tedious. Bennett’s wife was especially typical; she does not give birth to a boy but five girls. The family’s property couldn’t be given to a daughter according to the custom at that time, and the family without a son can grant the wealth to the nephew. Thus, one of Bennett nephew---Collins can inherit the family wealth. Therefore, Mrs. Bennett has great expectations on her nephew. Though the family is not very rich, he is the final owner of Bonnet family’s wealth. Mrs. Bennett felt at ease about this, and she has great hope on Collins and likes him. Catherine Collins, with the help of one of his relatives, becomes a priest. And then he goes to the home of his uncle, wanting to be home complement of Bennett. Because he has heard a lot about the arrangement of the five golden flowers of his uncle’s family, he is coming to try his luck here. In his mind, if he could be one son-in-low of his uncle’s, then he could get the property of the family. He stays at home for a long time to repay his uncle’s heritage and gets sympathy by the family. Informed that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he aims at the second daughter Elizabeth Bennett in spite for his aunt’s interesting sake, Elizabeth has been tired of him. Eventually, she refuses him with sharp tongue. But Collins quickly finds comfort from Charlotte who desires to get love from a male and believes marriage is the elegant way for a girl with some education. Charlotte knows that the marriage without property would eventually move toward disappointment and suffering. Almost all the girls born in a poor family without good education always regard marriage as the only decent way, although marriage might not necessarily bring happiness to them. She manages to arrange one of the most reliable way by marriage, thus she would not be exposed to the cold temperatures and suffer hunger in the future. She now gets a storage room. Then they get married as quickly as the lightening. Charlotte is like a rodman catching a fairly plump fish---Collins. But if he doesn’t meet a setback from Elizabeth, a nd theencouragement of Charlotte, I am afraid that he would not be so willing to propose marriage to Charlotte. The man like Bingley who has fairly numerable money need a beautiful wife, the poor man needs a wife with a huge wealth, like Wickham; It was lucky for Charlotte that she could gain the marriage with Collins although their marriage is not happy at all. A mediocre love, a dull marriage has been established effortlessly. Such marriage without love is too practical, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happiness. In these marriages, it was quite interesting that the women without property really get married with those rich bachelors. However, the happiness brought by marriage to them has not accompanied the husband. In marriage, money is very important. Austin objects such marriage simply based on money. Collins is the heir of Bonnet family; he doesn’t know what love is. He would state some of the inappropriate remarks at any time. Charlotte gets married for money. Eventually she gets nothing more than a rich man, though she has economic security. She doesn’t care about her husband’s accompanying and love. She encourages him to clean up the garden more. She sets his living-room in the small house absent of even a small number of sunshine. When her husband makes gaffe in front of their friends, she ignores and turns a deaf ear. Such arrangement for the story is a perfect irony for “the truth universally acknowledged” at the beginning of the novel. The author expresses great sympathy to the tr agic fate of the women at that time and those who had to marry because of economic restraints by the description of the marriage of Charlotte.2. Lydia and Wickham’s marriage---marriage based on vanity and carelessnessThe second marriage is between Bennet t’s third daughter Lydia and Wickham, the son of the housekeeper. Originally he is well-treated by the family and the friends. However, he comes down in the world because of his misbehavior. He gets into debt. So he wants to get money and become rich and change his social status through marriage, which is a way to approach the talents. He is a man without any responsibility. He does nothing except assailing a woman with obscenities. In his opinion, love is only recreation. For his purpose, he entices Lydia and gets her love easily, because she is young, innocent and vainglorious, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and is spoilt by her mother. Getting love and praise of a boy is her dream. So when Wickham wants to reach his aim---getting wealth by love, he exalts her beauty hypocritically. Lydia, impulsive, credulous and blindly following, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love does not get the permission from the parents, and then they elope. They spend money without restraint, andthey are unable to make ends meet. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that their love is false, Wickham would not marry Lydia, because she is no charming and has nothing to attract him, He does not lov e her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the condition of Darcy’s help. For sake of Elizabeth, Darcy gave them a sum of money to let them get out of difficulties. At the same time, this swindler prepares to climb another woman for a sum of money. Their marriage is considered to be a scandal in Bennett’s family. But Mrs. Bennet is not disgraceful to this marriage. When Collins gets the news, of course, he is very angry and reacts to the marriage to revenge his early failure of proposal to her. This marriage is one without love. They don’t know the real meaning of marriage. They only want to satisfy their aspiration. So we can say this is a kind of impromptu love and marriage without true love and responsibility which is doomed to be a tragedy.3. Jane and Mr. Bingley’s marriage---marriage based on same interestsThe third marriage is one of the eldest daughter Jane and Mr. Bingley. Bingley is a friend of Darcy. His sister loves Darcy very much and she expects Bingley to get married with Darcy’s sister Georgiana, because she wants to get love from Darcy in this way, which also reflects her selfishness. The marriage of the able man---Bingley and the beautiful girl---Jane is ideal in most people’s eyes. Bolobbyist, a politician, at the end of the 18th century, said that upbringing was more important than law, because it could promote moral, help to realize moral or ruin moral. Thus it could be concluded that upbringing played very important role in life at that time. On the first ball organized by Mr. Bingley in the Niger Park, Jane---the eldest daughter of the Bonnets’ is favored by the host. But the reserved personality and the standardized qualities make her conceal her true feelings, so she almost loses Bingley, which is also caused by her nest-of-kin’s lap sad conducts. For example, Mrs. Bennet often gives comments on the marriage in public, especially the benefits of the marriage, which almost frightens Bingley away. This good marriage based on a favorite of mutual good impression and true love. Fortunately with the misunderstandings between Elizabeth and Darcy solved, the lovers get married after so many setbacks.4. Darcy and Elizabeth’s marriage---marriage based on true loveThe fourth marriage is the main theme of the works. That is D arcy and Elizabeth’s marriage. Elizabeth is the ideal image for women as well as the most charismatic person in the novel. She is Bonnet’s second daughter, an active, intelligent and smart girl. She has a middle-class family background and has not been affected by the formal education belonging to those aristocratic younggirls, so she isn’t good at music and painting, but she has read many books which make her knowledgeable and perceptive. The most important aspect is that she is a lady with dignity and upbringing. Darcy is a man with tall figure and good manner. He is handsome, rich and powerful. So he is the ideal husband of most girls. But he has grown up in the surroundings with strong sense of power, so he always is selfish and arrogant, and he has a critical look at each individual, except the family members., he is not concerned about anyone else, and looks down upon anyone else. Therefore, when he first arrives in the village, he finds all the persons are far away from those imagined. Although every girl there is young and lovely, he has no interest to anyone except Elizabeth. At first he doesn’t put an eye on Elizabeth. Gradually, he has to admit that Elizabeth is beautiful, distinct and popular, although he insists that Elizabeth hasn’t the same soc ial status as him. Darcy is rational because he has a strong sense of power, which agrees on the reality at that time. Although he expresses his love to Elizabeth, he couldn’t help showing his arrogance, which makes Elizabeth have misconception and prejudi ce on Darcy. Darcy considers that he has been lowing himself and doing something against his will, personalities and even moral standard. He thinks that his marriage would certainly succeed and Elizabeth is waiting for him to propose marriage. Therefore, even he is irresistible to the flooding feelings, and condescends to Elizabeth, he still remembers the gap between them. Clearly, the rational aspect of Darcy’s personality performs on the realities of society. When he talks about his feelings of love, he also expresses the arrogance of these feelings in details, which results in the arousing resentment of Elizabeth; she rejects his marriage proposal, and angrily accuses his insolence. The rational aspect of the heroine Elizabeth shows her calm and actually stressful personality. Compared with her stupid mother, the smooth and lazy father, the shallow-minded, self-willed sister with feather head, Elizabeth is one with ideal mind. She is elegant like her sister Jane, but more intellectually superior unlike her sister being easy to be favorable. She also advises her sister to see through the stupidity and nonsense of those camouflage honest persons.Elizabeth is unique, because she has a deep understanding of all the things around her. In fact both she and Darcy are extremely sensitive to the social status. Different from Darcy, Elizabeth doesn’t have superiority about her family background and status. Instead, she feels deeply ashamed for her sister’s being lack of fairly education and her mother’s rudeness and stupidity. Compared with her moderate and generous sister Jane, she is smarter and even more profound. She has a clear understanding about her own social status, which is due to the psychotically sedimentary deposits because she is in aninferior position for long time. Because of this, she resists extremely against the arrogance of Darcy, and she tries her best to protect herself from being hurt by Darcy’s commanding attitude. She believes that she must make him understand that she is not woozy, which reflects her belief to deal with the emotional entanglements with Darcy, as well as her constant patter with Darcy and the prejudice on Darcy. It superficially seems to be shared by the traditional psychological requirement that everyone needs to be respected mutually. Mutually speaking, this is another form of expression about the awareness of status. Perhaps, to some extent, Darcy has more romantic temperament than Elizabeth, it is because he is better positioned than her. Elizabeth refuses the stupid priest Collins and challenges wealthy Darcy, all of this is actually the resistance of the prevailing marriage at that time. The ultimate failure makes Darcy wake up. He is aware of his own short-comings. He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corrects the shortcomings and mistakes. He is no longer arrogant and has a real love with Elizabeth. With the revealing of the truth, Elizabeth’s prejudice on Darcy becomes deeper. Until when Elizabeth refuses Darcy’s long love letter, she experiences the fierce sh ock. After undergoing a period of painful and profound thought, she could not help but to shout how despicable she is, she believes she is the excellent one in the family, she is skillful and always despises her sister’s dress. In order to satisfy her own vanity, she always treats people with an irrelevant suspicion and confusion. How shameful it is! But this shame serves her right. Even if she really falls in love with someone, she should not be so blind to meet this flunking stage. She is stupid not only in love, but in the vanity. When she first knows them two, one loves her and makes her feel happy, and the other treats her in a cold manner, which makes her angry. All these cause her prejudice and ignorance, when she encounters their affairs. She would not be able to distinguish the right and the wrong. She could be considered to be knowledgeable at last. When we see the blame from heart, we find her shortcomings and the courage that she could face herself directly. It is her bringing that plays a role; she starts to give up the bias caused by self-esteem, truly and seriously understand Darcy. Elizabeth wouldn’t believe the shameless lies about Darcy said by Han and eliminate the misunderstanding and prejudice. She finally falls in love with Darcy. When the sister asks how she would love Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she sees the beautiful lane manor park. The statement seems to refer to the property of Darcy. Therefore, Jane doesn’t want the sisters to be kidding. In additi on to referring to the specific manor, she also refers thenew Darcy seen in the garden. In other words, Darcy changes the attitude of being arrogant and rude, and this is the reason why Darcy wins Elizabeth’s heart and love.III. Influence of Austin’s Marriage Concept on Marriage Today1.Woman’s social status in Austin’s age and Austin’s marriage conceptMarriage is the central topic in Pride and Prejudice. From the analysis of the marriages, we can see that wealth is the decisive factor of marriage to the female at that time while the major factor of influencing concepts of marriage is women’s social status. In the novel, Austen portrays the women’s low status and the reasons for it. Pride and Prejudice is also a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, property, and marriage. In a letter Austen wrote to Fanny in 1817, she wrote, “sing le women have a dreadful propensity for being poor---which is one very strong argument in favor of matrimony.”(Gillie, 2005, 98) We get a somber impression of the women in Jane Austen’s lifetime, with fairly rare exceptions, only two professions were open to opportunities and enormous risks, and the latter was arduous, penurious, and little respected. There were also, of course, literature and journalism, but they seldom afforded a stable livelihood. Having a private income, happy matrimony was the only way of life in which middle-and upper-class women could normally hope to find themselves satisfied, esteemed, and secured. The women, in a lower status, in order to live, she has to depend on the marriage or the men, except that she is a rich woman, who owns a large fortune. In that case, it is unnecessary for her to depend on marriage. If it is not in that case, girls must find a rich man to be married. The single women must have their own ways to live on their own. “It is a truth universally acknowledged tha t a single man in possession of a large fortune must be in want of a wife.” (Austen, 2003, 1) This is not a truth, in reverse, it is a truth that a poor woman without fortune is in want of a man in possession of a large fortune. The reason is that she has to live, but she cannot live by her own. Therefore, the ladies take advantage of their beauties and good manners to attract men.In this novel Austen concentrates on women’s fate most. Through her characters’ process of courtship and marriage, Austen shows social background behind their marriage and what low status women have suffered. In Pride and Prejudice, generally the only way for a woman is to get married besides being spinsterhood or governess. To marry a rich and high status man, is a path for the young women to gaining financial security and social status. The novel portrays life in the middle class ruralsociety of the day, and tells the initial misunderstanding and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. They gradually dispel their prejudice and constitute a happy marriage. Here Austen shows the power of love and happiness to overcome class boundaries and prejudice, thereby implying that women should strive for their own love and happiness, but not to according to the social will. However, behind the happy marriage of Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy, Austen mainly wants to show that property, social status still play the most important roles in a marriage, from which women suffered a lot. No right of inheritance, such is particularly the case of the Bennets, a family of five daughters whose father’s estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennet’s death they will loose home, land, and income, everything else. After knowing Elizabeth’s refusal to Mr. Collins, Mrs. Ben net threats her daughter that“if you go on refusing every marriage, you will never get a husband, and I am sure I do not know who is to maintain you when your father died.”(Austin, 2003, 150) So it is illustrated that property and social status are more important than marriage. Marriage is an odd phenomenon and it is just an approach, which people could reach their aims and provides them convenience. Austen describes Charlotte’s marriage as a symbol, through which Austen shows the readers what low status w omen hold.Through Pride and Prejudice, Austen portrays the commonly held views on the characters’ marriage. Society, at that time, put a significant value on property and social status, and women in such a society, with their privileges tightly limited, had no chance to develop their personalities and their characters were fettered by the society. There were no centrally organized systems of state---supported schools, and some local grammar schools did exist but did not admit girls. So women’s education be came impossible, and they didn’t have careers, but society required little for their use of knowledge and gave little chance for them to use knowledge. They were denied the possibility of improving their status or gaining their financial security through hard work or personal achievements. They were mostly estimated by others through their property and social status. Therefore, in Pride and Prejudice, marriage is one of the most ideal ways, in which women could gain reputation, wealth and raise their social status. Just as the character Charlotte Lucas in the novel, without thinking highly either of men or matrimony, her life goal is marriage. When proposing and being rejected by Elizabeth, Mr. Collins quickly transfers his attention towards Charlotte Lucas, and he could not possibly be in love with Charlotte, for only three days before he had proposed Elizabeth. YetCharlotte knows the fact that the man she will marry has no attachment to her, just for the will of marrying, but she pays no attention to it. She marries Mr. Collins for the purpose other than love, so she doesn’t care about whether there is love in their marriage. Just as Charlotte says to her fiend “I am not romantic, you know. I never was. I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Co llins’s character, connections, and situations in life…” she accepts Mr. Collins’s proposal. Austen portrays that Charlotte’s marriage to Collins is a monetary trade. Charlotte marries Collins primarily because he will be able to provide her enough livelihoods and will be able to make her life quite easy by considering estate. So she thinks that the tolerable Collins’s proposing to her is an extremely good fortune for her since he earns his money through inheritance and is in the command of the wealthy lady Catherine. In other words, Charlotte marries Collins not because of love but because of her desire for financial security and raising her social status. Facing the practicality, she would have sacrificed every better feeling to worldly advantages. After their marriage, Charlotte has to endure her intolerable husband. In the novel, Austen also criticizes the marriage concept women held at that time. In terms of marriage, women thought they had no high social status and had no large property, so they thought that marriage was an acceptable path to his high status or their economic safety according to the view of the society. They never thought that they could earn their life and their marriage, which belonged to themselves but not to the social value. They just considered if they could completely integrate into the society and accepted the twisted monetary view and marriage view, and played the roles that the society needed, they could gain their happiness and easy life. Thus, they dressed themselves and were willing to transform themselves into commodities, appearing in kinds of balls, in order to attract men.Although women were forced under the social prejudice, they tried no struggle. They were willing to believe that marriage was a form of trade and in the marriage market they could be given happiness. Facing social prejudice, they also had the consciousness of being humble, thinking that the male was the superiority, and women had to surrender to the society, was seemed to more easily to them. In the novel, Austen demonstrates that women should strive for their own life and marriage, be self-confident and get rid of the illiberal mind, not ruin any chance to realize the value, dignity, personality of theirs. Elizabeth is the best example, although she sometimes shows her pride, she is an admirable, wit, brilliant, and self-confident woman, who conquers many difficulties and at last she gains the true love with Darcy. As for Charlotte, she also could have tried to find somebody she really loves and gets married, like her。

So, she objects to getting married for money , objecting to regarding the marriage as a trifling matter . She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage , and regard men and women’s emotion as the foundation stone which concludes the ideal marriage .The woman protagonist in the book Elizabeth comes from the little landlord’s family, reaches the west to have deep love for for the rich and powerful people sons and younger brothers. Elizabeth’s misunderstanding and prejudice to him are a reason, but a main one is the arrogance that she dislikes him. Reach the thes of the west in fact status’ the reflections of difference, exist this kind arrogant, Not having common thoughts and feelings between he and Elizabeth, the marriage that can not have lofty ideals . 浅析《傲慢与偏见》中的女性主义
An Analysis of Feminism in Pride and Prejudice

Her pursuit of independence and equality, going against feudal ethics, her disregarding of social conventions, the pursuit of freedom and equality of marriage, all of these are embodiment of strong feminism. IntroductionPride and Prejudice is a typical masterpiece of realism in the 18th century, which reflects the feminist thought and has attracted the attention of the readers. So many scholars have conducted extensive researches on it. The academic study of pride and prejudice from the perspective of feminism, with feminist criticism method, reflects the women in all aspects of independent thinking, but there are few articles mentioned the existing limitations of feminism in the novel. In the fiction, the author by creating new women image — Elizabeth, expressed dissatisfaction with the present situation of women at that time, showed advanced feminist awareness of the mainstream in the patriarchal society. Influenced by the society at that time, the awareness of male authority has been deeply embedded into the author‟s ideology, which also appears in the novel, and is common in today‟s feminist work.2. The Embodiment of Feminism in the NovelThe 19th century is the bud of feminism; in the meantime, “the UK has produced a large number of ideological deep, passionate, radical political writers. Their education and grow through writing to explore women, marriage, family, economy and other issues, both showed a sharp feminist thought.”(Chen, 2001:25) Therefore, Jane Austen has also been influenced by the trend. In the novel Pride and Prejudice, one of the most representative characters is Elizabeth with a rebellious spirit, who was different from other characters in the novel. Elizabeth is independent, with a strong self-esteem, dares to challenge the political correctness, to pursue their happy marriage of new women, and she is one of the most representative characteristics of feminism. In this work, the author presents the phenomenon of gender discrimination in British society, reveals the social restrictions on women and shows the advanced female consciousness from a special female perspective. The following contents will analyze the feminism of Pride and Prejudice from the pursuit of independent personality and equal right, the revolt against the feudal moral and the pursuit of freedom and equality of marriage.2.1 The Pursuit of Independence and Equal RightsIn Britain at that time, due to economic independence, women have been in a state of being dominant, thus become subservient to the men. “Women only in male pocket, men are dominated in family and society, and the center. In both physically and intellectually women are supposed to be the weak of the society, women do not enjoy equal rights with men”.(Wang, 2004:17) But Jane Austen is strongly opposed to the roles of social consciousness, said that men and women should have the same rights, stupid, vulnerability is not only the exclusive terms of women. If women receive the same formal education as men, women can be as smart, rational as men.The so-called independent personality refers to p erson‟s independence, autonomy, creativity, which requires people not to depend on any external authority, and not attached to any real political power. In Pride and Prejudice, the writer shaped a beautiful, witty, bold and lively character—Elizabeth, who is different from the other women in the novel, she is sanity and reasonable new woman, who has her own judgment and independent consciousness and has her own original ideas. At the time of the society under the rule of patriarchy, Elizabeth is a very attractive woman. For the choice of marriage, she doesn‟t want to be limited by the lives of their parents and their arrangement. When the heir to the property of his father Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, though mother pressures to Elizabeth again and again, Elizabeth finally flatly refused. She doesn‟t want to be tied down by a secular marriage, refused to accept a marriage without love. However, when the hero Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, Elizabeth was angered by the arrogance of Darcy and straightforwardly refused Darcy‟s proposal. This behavior was very incredible at that time. Because of D arcy‟s property or social status is the most of women‟s dream at that time. But Elizabeth wants a marriage which is based on mutual admiration, mutual respect, rather than a class business marriage.Female subordination was very common in the 18th century of England, but in Pride and Prejudice the heroine Elizabeth had been striving for equal status between men and women. In the novel, Elizabeth is not inferior to men, so that the arrogant Darcy eventually abandons his arrogance and marries Elizabeth. At the same time,Elizabeth‟s performance is more rational, decisive than hesitant Mr. Bingley. Among them, the author also specially shaped love flattery, curry favor with powerful, silly Mr. Collins and simple, moody Mrs. Bennett to prove words like intelligent, reasonable etc. are not only synonymous with men. Both women and men have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, women should enjoy the same rights with men.2.2 The Opposition to Feudal Moral18th-century in Britain is covered by the patriarchal culture. Women don‟t have equal education rights, and their role in life was decided by men. The focus of the female life is housework and taking care of children, and be “the angel in the home”, which makes women gradually withdrew from the social stage. But Elizabeth is a typical rebellious character, who wouldn‟t be limited by the feudal creed and does not recognize the fact that woman has no talent and unwilling to become the victim of political correctness. As a result, the protagonist Elizabeth against ethical code can be divided into the following two aspects:One aspect is that the women‟s acceptance in education. At that time in Britain, men and women do not have the same education rights due to the influence of patriarchalism. The natural obligation of woman is attached to the man; take care of family and child. The wisdom of the woman should not be showed in knowledge or degree, but in singing, playing the piano, painting, doing housework, etc. In Pride and Prejudice, says Mr. Bingley, as long as women can decorate stage desk, adorn screen, woven bag, etc., can be defined as talented women. It is not hard to see, at the time of the society, women‟s“innocence”has achieved a tacit attitude in the men‟s minds, and became a kind of social identity. They don‟t want woman to accept normal education, also just put their training to their education to meet the requirements of the male ideal. But the heroine Elizabeth does not agree with it, and even showed a kind of defiance. Influenced by Mr. Benet, she loves reading. When the sisters are discussing a variety of men, she likes to stay in a quiet place alone with a book. In the novel Pride and Prejudice the opening scenes is Elizabeth holding a book in the home, while the other girl is not in play combat, but practicing the piano. Thus verifies whatMr. Bennett said, “They have none of them much to recommended them. They are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters”(Austen, 1993). When Elizabeth visits Lady Catherine, Lady Catherine asks Elizabeth about the girl family education, Elizabeth answers honestly. Actually, she can play piano, but she says she only knows a little. In Elizabeth‟s view, this is just a worldly game. The other aspect is in manners. “Self-control, lives in seclusion, roll with the punches, virtuous, at the time of the British is considered to be under patriarchy women shall abide by the code of ethics, also can saying is women should have a fair maiden quality”.(Liu, 2009(03):4) But the heroine Elizabeth is against “women‟s”for many times, such as the opposition regardless of her family at that time, walking in the rain to visit her sick sister, although very mess, even being laughed at by Miss Bingley; She doesn‟t attach herself to people in power, such as she repulse Mr. Darcy‟s offer of marriage, though he is rich; She is not makes up to dignitaries as their agents, when she is in Mrs. Catherine‟s home, everybody curries favor with lady Catherine, but Elizabeth sits there quietly. For Mrs. Catherine‟s ironic question, Elizabeth also refuted, face to face without hesitation to maintain the dignity of the family.Due to the time that the women do not have family property inheritance, so Mrs. Bennett is eager to let five daughters marry, and under the condition of the oldest daughter is not married, the rest of the four daughters have been went out for social intercourse at the same time. In the 18th century England, this kind of behavior is a very unreasonable, but Elizabeth‟s is not agree with it. So when Catherine asked Mrs. Elizabeth‟s younger sister, Elizabeth was not afraid to tell Mrs. Catherine her sisters are already out communication, Mrs. Catherine said something pretty incredible, but Elizabeth said, “If only because the elder sister can‟t marry early, or don‟t want to marry early, can‟t do sister out social and entertainment, it is too bitter. The smallest and the largest also have the right to digest the youth. I don‟t think it can do that promote sisterly true feelings, also can‟t form a gentle character.”(Austen, 1993) Elizabeth‟s clever; irony answer expressed her opposition to Mrs. Catherine‟sdecadent ideas, and dissatisfaction with the feudal ethical code and contempt.2.3 The Pursuit of Freedom and Equality of MarriageIn the beginning of Pride and Prejudice, “all bachelors with property must need to marry a wife, and it has become a universally acknowledged truth.”In Jane Austen‟s times, women‟s marriage is not based on “lov e”,but based on the “economy”. This kind of marriage with utilitarian color is opposed by the author, and then the author, shaping the heroine Elizabeth, conveys her calls for opposition with secular opinions about love.In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth‟s marriage is built on love, on the basis of mutual respect for each other. So when she hears that Charlotte will marry to Collins, she feels very sad. She doesn‟t believe this utilitarian marriage can bring happiness to her friend. At the same time, on impulse, her sister Lydia elopes with Wickham; Elizabeth hated this kind of behavior, too. In her view, only the marriage based on love can be happy forever. In the novel, we can see money, status and power are playing a decisive role among female marriage. This marriage, apparently does not involve feelings, is pure economic problem. Social elites are valued not for their moral character and behavior, social role, but for their money, farms, houses, furniture, carriage, garden and so on. Darcy‟s cousin, colonel William is an earl‟s younger son, who can‟t inherit property and the title. He said frankly to Elizabeth, profligate spending, money has become the important factor in his marriage. Regardless of the mother‟s objection, Elizabeth resolutely rejected her family heir Mr. Collins‟s proposal. She is not willing to accept the settling of marriage. Because of Mr. Darcy arrogance, Elizabeth chose to refuse Mr. Darcy‟s proposal.By shaping the character of Elizabeth, the author suggests that marriage should not be dominate and influenced by others. Women should adopt a positive attitude to the secular marriage challenges, and dare to break through the connective with secular opinions about love, brave to pursue their own happiness, get rid of the marriage built on money, status, realize the equality between men and women in marriage.3. The Limitation of Feminism in the NovelIn the novel Pride and Prejudice, the representative figure --Elizabeth, although is constantly with feudal political correctness, her happiness eventually established on the basis of marrying a rich man, which clearly shows that the author compromise on the society. “Since childhood grew up in the living environment and the influence of parents, Jane Austen‟s novel material always locate in the English countryside and neighborhood middle class life, she described the characters in the novel life are very familiar with”. (Yu, 1997:296) Social reality makes Jean Austen can‟t walk out of the country life, and her view is not very open, and real life didn‟t give the author an open space. So some critics considered works of Jean Austen material single, conservative, and they also think that some of her work too feminine. In the fiction, it is not hard to see that the traditional patriarchalism or can control w omen‟s lives, females have to succumb to the male oppression. “In politics, economy, society and life and so on many aspects still have no voice.”(Lin, 2004:15), In short, the novel to a certain extent, reflects that Austin is influenced by conservative patriarchal ideology, the feminism she wants to express still has some limitations, which includes the following aspects: 3.1 Unclear Concept of EqualityFrom the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author‟s sensitive class consciousness can be seen, and her characters also have a distinct class sense of hierarchy. Although in the novel, the author did not describe the intense class conflict, the author‟s class consciousness can be expressed through her negative attitude for marry into a proper family and mercenary marriage. The characters in Pride and Prejudice basically belong to three classes: at the top is Darcy and his aunt who is a duchess with power, they represent the noble class; In the middle class is Mr. Bingley, he represents the emerging upstarts, known as the “new”; and at the bottom of the class is Mr. Bennett, representing the ordinary gentleman. The combination of Elizabeth and Darcy represents the noble class with ordinary gentleman “marriage”.Despite the striking reality in every social class in the eyes of Jane Austen, by shaping the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy, the author has tried to jump the class nature of social disorder, which contributed to the combination of “pride”and “prejudice”, strived to achieve the equality between men and women. But in the novel the author advocates the equality of men and women status, as well as on the social class relations not real beyond the equality of the bourgeois class.First of all, in pursuit of equality between men and women, the protagonist Elizabeth and Darcy in both property and social status have certain disparity. The hero Darcy in the nobility of the society, have the hereditary property, the farms, with revenues of ten thousand pounds a year. And the heroine Elizabeth is just an ordinary ge ntleman‟s daughter locating at the bottom of the society, who gets only “4 per mile of one thousand pound”from her mother. However, Darcy doesn‟t care the gap between him and Elizabeth, and marries to the lower gentleman‟s daughter. Compared with Darcy, on the contrary, Lady Catherine is thrusting, and does not forget the rank order. When she learns that her nephew proposes to the lower gentleman‟s daughter Elizabeth, she goes to Elizabeth‟s home, looks down on Elizabeth and her class origin, and points out that the class differences between her and Darcy. But Elizabeth‟s says, “He is a gentleman, I am a gentleman‟s daughter, at this point we are equal.”(Austen, 1993) Clearly, in the novels of Jane Austen, although the author has been striving for equal social status between men and women, the author just said they are “basi cally”belonging to the same class. Elizabeth and D arcy‟s equality establish in the same class under the background of the implementation of equal, namely with the gentlemen class, and this is the reason why Elizabeth can stand erect before Darcy and Lady Catherine these noble. Thus it can be seen that the author‟s advocating of equality of men and women‟s status is not thorough enough, the author has not really pursued this equality in the various social aspects, just looking for compromise and retrogression.Secondly, performance in aligning with upper class; there are three levels in the novel: the noble class, the “nouveau riche”class, the gentleman class. Mr. Darcy, aristocratic class in society, the first time he comes out, and people are widely rumored that he has an income of ten thousand pounds a year, the male guest praised his wisdom, and the female guests praised his good looks. In the whole party, all people looked at him with love almost half a night. Finally they discovered he isarrogant, looks down on people, so everyone begins to dislike him. Although everyone has the negative emotions about Darcy, he has the authority that no one dares to challenge. On behalf of the newly rich Bingley trust the representative of the aristocracy Darcy, even his marriage happiness is controlled by Darcy. Darcy‟s cousin Fitzwilliam and Darcy‟s sister Georgiana also obey the arrangement of Darcy. Among them, when Elizabeth asks Colonel Fitzwilliam when to leave, his answer is listening to Darcy. All of them reflect Darcy‟s authority. Elizabeth refuses to Darcy because of his arrogance, but when she finds herself has been deep in love with Darcy, says: “He is proud, not like the pride of the ordinary people. Such a good youth, good family, and have money, everything is better than somebody else, it is no wonder that he pride. As I said, he had the right to pride.”(Austen, 1993) Darcy and the heroine finally married. And Elizabeth‟s elder sister Jean marry to Mr. Bingley, who representative the “new class”. From here, it is easy to see that Elizabeth, Jane on behalf of ordinary gentleman class is gradually close to the noble class. Jane Austen still doesn‟t get rid of the limitation of noble ideas, is still affected by the traditional consciousness of noble.3.2 Incomplete Rebellious SpiritIn Pride and Prejudice, the heroine Elizabeth is an independent personality that dares to break through the representative of the secular bondage, and braves to pursuit of happy marriage. For example, when she hears that Jane was ill, walking in the rain to Netherfield to visit sick sister despite of her family‟s opposition; when Darcy expresses love to Elizabeth for the first time, she decisively rejected, refused to accept the charity of marriage and so on. Through those things, it is not hard to see Elizabeth‟s contempt and discontent for feudal political. And she is a typical representative of rebellious spirit who not willing to marry based on money and social status. However, Elizabeth‟s defiance is not thorough. First of all, it performs at women depend on men on economy. In the 19th-century of Britain, women with no economic foundation has been under the oppression of patriarchy society. “Economic foundation determines superstructure”, which directly tell people that economicindependence is unavailable to status in the society. Similarly, in pride and prejudice, because of women‟s economic independence, women have to rely on his father as well as the future husband, which makes them lose the right of speech at home and in marriage life, so that ultimately Elizabeth did not escape the arrangement of social reality because of her economic dependence, and married Darcy who comes from wealthy family. During this period, because women have no real property inheritance, women still depend on men. Women‟s status is obviously low. In Pride and Prejudice, the role of Elizabeth defined by the author did not consider going out to find a career to get economic independence, to change her present situation, but just stay at home. Facing that the closest relatives of blood relationship inherit the property, she has never questioned, but slowly accepted it. In this case, for the hard choices of the unknown future life, the heroine could only marry a man who has financial security and respected status in society. Obviously, Elizabeth does not get rid of the control of man on economy and the subordinate status to get real independence. Our protagonist Elizabeth from beginning to end are not out of her own home, which shows that at last the author did not establish the independent female consciousness.Second, the performances of the women have been in a passive waiting for status. In Britain at that time, women are in a disadvantageous position both in class and gender. In the novel, the only way of social activity for women is dance. Mrs. Bennett has been urged their daughters to take part in all kinds of ball in order to be able to let his daughter have a good home to return to, and the protagonist Elizabeth also went to the PROM consciously for the same purpose. Elizabeth is snubbed by Darcy at a party and in the following Darcy‟s first proposal is vehemently refused. In the novel, Elizabeth is hostile to Darcy intentionally, though she had another kind of feeling from the beginning, she dare not to admit this kind of feeling. “When Darcy proposed to her for the first time, she was actually pleasantly and surprised, but she performance was angry, and these angry though Jane and Wickham as an excuse, but true on Darcy, Elizabeth at both hate and love the contradiction in the mood.”(Pan, 2004:256) Next after Darcy has made a series of changes, and corrected the too much arrogance attitude, Elizabeth begins to regret her former attitude. But she doesn‟t fightfor her own happiness, just waiting for Darcy‟s proposal again. Visible, in contact with Darcy, the hero Elizabeth has been in a passive position. During this period, Elizabeth is familiar with Wickham, and attracted by his gentility, but she doesn‟t express her love, too. Her sister Jane also is in a passive position. When Jane meets Mr. Bingley at a party, she is deeply attracted by Mr. Bingley, but due to the so-called “lady” character, Jane does not dare to express her thoughts too much, so that almost missing her love. Thus it can be seen that women in the novel all follow the custom of the typical patriarchal society, quietly waiting for the pursuit of men. “Visible, in the author‟s mind, patriarchal ideology, women are not fundamentally getting rid of the economic dependency on men, failed to get rid of by men subordinate position of choice”. (Chen, 2012, (04):4)3.3 The Pursuit of Perfect MarriageIn Pride and Prejudice, the center of the novel is marriage. So the book is talking about the marriage and money, marriage and position and marriage and love. In Pride and Prejudice, because of the relationship between money and marriage that makes the young men‟s course of love is full of frustration. But because of the happy endings in Pride and Prejudice, it is unavoidable for people to ask, “Does this kind of perfect marriage really exists in British at that time? The bondage of marriage really can span class differences?”In the novel, Mrs. Be net‟s life is to marry his daughter, for the daughters to seek a better husband. In this regard, Be net‟s five daughters have their own strongpoint: gentle Jean, smart and lively Elizabeth, wooden Mary and flirtatious Lydia. The author is like a god who assigns the ideal husband to her favorite characters as a reward, but for those little girls in improper behavior has an unhappy marriage or lives alone. For example, the eldest daughter Jane who is kind, meet and gentle, is a representative of the fair maiden. She has strong self-control but lack of self judgment, and beauty and character is her superiority, and obtaining B ingley‟s love is the reward for her. The second daughter, Elizabeth, is the author‟s favorite role. She is the only one who has a clear understanding for their own family and the weakness of this class, and her beauty, independent self-esteem, lively to win the love of Darcy. She got abigger reward - become the capable mistress of Pemberley manor. And beautiful and frivolous Lydia is completely not disciplined, who lacks of education and there is no shame in her mind. She is controlled by lust and flirting with officers unscrupulously. Finally she marries to Wickman who is humble and extravagant. And third daughter Mary who is wooden, average intelligence want to prove her talent everywhere, until at the end of this novel she is unable to find their own “Mr. R ight”. Above all, in A usten‟s novels, as long as women own the wisdom, manner, independence can across the social barriers and get together with there beloved. Hero‟s ingenuity seems to be a kind of tool that helps them to find their fare, and does not have effects on other ways.In general, because of the living environment makes Jane Austen can‟t walk out of the country, and her social activity confined to the gentle class and within the church. “Excluded from certain kinds of life experiences, so her …three or four families of rural village‟, is not so much her artistic talent, she consciously in art and helpless choice, she just lucky noted down her era” (Lefroy, 2002:90).4. ConclusionJane Austen‟s feminist consciousness has been clearly analyzed in her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. Austen uses woman‟s unique observation to describe a small word around her, especially among the ladies marriages and love affairs. The heroine, Elizabeth is full of wisdom and independent of thinking that embodies feminist consciousness. But the feminist expressed by author is not comprehensive, which makes it unconsciously fall into the trap of patriarchalism again. For example the concept of quality and class consciousness in the works is not clear. And rebellious spirit of the novel is not thorough, and the pursuit of perfect marriage settings and so on are because the author is influenced by the patriarchalism, Nowadays feminist literary is greatly influenced by the patriarchalism, and the study of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of feminist can provide experience for female writing.Bibliography[1] Duckworth,Alistair. The Improvement of the Estate:A S tudy of Jane Austen’sNovels. 本科毕业设计-论《傲慢与偏见》中的爱情观和婚姻观
AbstractPride and Prejudice is one of the great works of England’s great writer, Jane Austen. In this work, Jane Austen describes four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice. Through the analysis on four marriages in Pride and Prejudice, this dissertation discusses different concepts of love and marriage of four different marriages and analyses the views about love and marriage of Jane Austen. There are four different marriages with different concepts of love and marriage, and different roles have different ideas about love and marriage. In Pride and Prejudice, Some people just want to have power, status and wealth, and others only look for true love. But people need to consider the importance and cruelty of reality in marriage. Reality is ruthless, people should have clear ideas about love and marriage, and don’t be fooled by false and unreal things. The true love is the foundation of a happy marriage; if people ask for too much on power, status and wealth, they can not have true happiness on love and marriage.Key words: Jane Austen; Pride and Prejudice; concept of love and marriage摘要《傲慢与偏见》是英国著名女作家简·奥斯汀的一部伟大著作。

奥斯汀在傲慢与偏见中的婚姻观
ABSTRACT“I t is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Almost two centuries later, the deep impression on readers left by the opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice has not decreased because of their changing literary taste. As the author of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen was one of the famous realistic writers in English literature in the nineteenth century. Pride and Prejudice is Austen’s representative work. During the forty-two years of her short life and a merry one, Austen wrote six full-length works: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion. There were no earthshaking events, no dreadful disasters, no sharp contradictions and no romantic legends in Austen’s novels. Time and space were small in her novels. She wrote how a marriageable woman could find a satisfactory husband. She described many kinds of love and marriage of different women. She expressed her own original views of marriage in her works. In Pride and Prejudice Austen wrote four marriage types: ideal Elizabeth and Darcy, realizable Charlotte and Collins, felicitous Jane and Bingley, unhappy Lydia and Wickham. She pointed out emphatically economic consideration is the bonds of wedlock and love. She said marriage is not determined by property and family status; it is unwise to marry without money, but it is wrong to marry for money; the marriage settled by love is happy and ideal.Based on Marxist social and economic theory, the thesis explicated that Austen’s view of marriage was progressive, advocated by her focus on the equality between men and women. She emphasized marriage should be of equal importance both by love and by economic consideration but love plays the guiding role. She revealed the connotation of marriage. She mercilessly criticized the patriarchy and the view of marriage of her time. Her exposure is of great realistic significance to the society today.Key words: Pride and Prejudice, view of marriage, property and family status, patriarchy, realistic significance摘要“凡是有财产的单身汉,必定需要娶位太太,这已经成为了一条举世公认的真理。
Pride and Prejuice 傲慢与偏见 读后感 英文
Romance Reality and Reason——The four marriagesin《Pride and Prejudice》Before I read the book《Pride and Prejudice》, I watched the movie adapted by this book first, and every adaptation is another story. For no one can bring the whole original story to the readers by another way. And after I watched the movie, I was shocked by the girls marriage-holic. They were eager to marry someone and enjoy the romance. While the book gives me another view at the five girls and through their attitudes to marriage, I learned that an ideal marriage need more than romance and passion. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. The sentence in 《Pride and Prejudice》reveals the most important concept of Jane Austen’s time: marriage. For the majority of the population, marriage was the goal and the center of everything. It was the reason girls were taught their social skills and mannerisms. Marriage was used as a tool in unite powerful families. It was used as a bargaining tool by fathers in matters of business. Until a female was married, her life’s goal was to get married. Afterwards, if she had daughters, it was her job to teach her daughter the same process to follow. In the midst of all the uses, love was rarely mentioned——at least not in its literal form. Unlike today’s said notion of only marring for love, it was rare in practice in Jane Austen’s time. In the book, Jane Austen used love as a main factor in Elizabeth’s marriage, while at the same time she presented several other views about other characters’ marriage. The combination based on love and similar interests results in a happy marriage. The author told us four different marriages to show the readers that different people have different attitudes towards on marriage. And also expressed her own viewpoints on marriage that a combination based on love and similar interests is a happy and perfect marriage. In her opinion, the money-oriented marriage and sex-oriented marriage are not successful although the people can live together. At first, Mrs. Bennet is prattling on about the new, wealthy bachelor that has moved nearby, and she is literally begging Mr. Bennet to visit him, showing how much it means to her to have her daughters married to a wealthy man. At this time she knows absolutely nothing about him except his social station in life-and that is good enough to satisfy her. Her exasperated and overzealous behavior over Mr. Bennet’s refusing to visit the newcomer reveal just how silly she is over the entire matter of marriage. Mrs. Bennet dedicates the majority of her time trying place her daughters in what she thinks are“good matches”. The readers see just how important marriage is to her when she says to her husband,“if I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield, and all others equally married. I shall have nothing to wish for.”S he excellently sums up her life.Elizabeth, despite her mother’s reasons and views of marriage, desires to marry for love. In fact, she states that she will marry for no other reason than love. Therefore, when Darcy first proposes to her, she adamantly refuses. She by no means feels any love for him. In addition, during his proposal, instead of focusing on love and her attributes, he seems to make it a point of expressing how much he did not want to propose by saying to her about his proposal.“In vain Istruggled, my feelings will not be repressed.”T he author goes on to describe how Darcy elaborates in his proposal on“his sense of her inferiority of its being a degradation(to marry her)···”Elizabeth simply refused him and thought Darcy was too full of pride. And when he says in his second proposal,“my affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject foe ever.”H e reveals that he knows he was wrong, and knows that she may still refuse him. At this point, Elizabeth’s feeling for Darcy has changed because of his letter of explanations, his courtesy towards her aunt and uncle, and his salvation of her sister’s reputation. She loves him, therefore she accepts his proposal.Among all the marriages in this novel, the combination of pleasant Bingley and mild Jane is the most blessed and happy one. The couple has similar interests and they insisted on pursuing their true love, which lead them to a happy and perfect marriage. It is true that for the young ladies, besides their family, marriage was the only respectable way for them to survive economically. The older the females got, the more pressure they felt to marry. Elizabeth’s best friend, Charlotte Lucas, is older than the average girls. Elizabeth greatly likes and admires her friend until she sees deeper into her character. Elizabeth is abashed that Charlotte would marry such a pathetic, social climbing man as Mr. Collins so that she can have economic and social security. Unlike Elizabeth, Charlotte views marriage as many of today would view a job:“will it provide economically for me?” along with that and Collins’s social acceptability, Charlotte is content to marry him. She may fancy love in the way Elizabeth does, but she does not view it was something necessary to a marriage. One cannot blame Charlotte for her actions; it was simply the way many young ladies were taught to believe. The younger sister Lydia’s marriage with Wickham is some kind of laughy. Their marriage is based on appearance and flesh and blood, Wickham is a liar, and Lydia seems to be silly and without reason. Their marriage is not so described as those three, even the details about their love. Their marriage is doomed to be unhappy for the two don’t share same value or same interests. They just married for passion.Charlotte Lucas, who basically married for money, turns out to be content with her life with Wickham. Jane and Elizabeth, who marry for love, end up happy. The author uses theses outcomes to say that love should be the reason for marriage- not money. She seems to imply that people must look deeper than status (Darcy),money(Charlotte),appearance (Lydia) and first impressions(Elizabeth)to find love.Even though she lived in a time when many motives and mannerisms were based on such things as class and reputation, Austen seems to use pp a means of protest against the norms of the time. In closer inspection, love may be an excellent literal lesson, as well as a small application used to represent every situation oflife. The theme is narrow, but she showed us a beautiful tableau of the England people’s life of her own time. It seems that she had a talent to describe the ordinary life of people. Most parts of the story are the intricacies of courtships and marriages between the members of her class, which are great attraction to many readers.。

Pride And Prejudice
Pride And PrejudiceLove is an eternal theme in 1itemture. In Pride and Prejudice, love stories are the main point. And there are four different marriages described in the story. By comparing these eight people’s characters and their four marriages, we can understand Jane Austen’s view towards marriage and imagine their life style at that time as well.Plot summaryThe novel centers on the Bennet family, consisting of the bookish Mr Bennet; his wife, a woman somewhat lacking in social graces and primarily concerned with her family's fortunes; and her five daughters. The youngest, Lydia, most takes after Mrs Bennet; the eldest, Jane, is kind-hearted and proper; and the narrator, Elizabeth Bennet, is the second-eldest and most takes after her father, sharing his keen wit and occasionally sarcastic outlook. The narrative opens with Mr Bingley, a wealthy, charismatic and social young bachelor, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighbourhood of the Bennet family. Mr Bingley is soon well received, while his friend Mr Darcy makes a less favorable first impression by appearing proud and condescending at a ball that they attend (he detests dancing and is not much for light conversation). Mr Bingley singles out Jane for particular attention, and it soon becomes apparent that they have formed an attachment to each other, though Jane does not alter her conduct for him, confessing her great happiness only to Lizzie. By contrast, Darcy slights Elizabeth, who overhears and jokes about it despite feeling a budding resentment. On paying a visit to Mr Bingley's sister, Caroline, Jane is caught in a heavy downpour, catches cold, and is forced to stay at Netherfield for several days. Elizabeth arrives to nurse her sister and is thrown into frequent company with Mr Darcy, who begins to act marginally less coldly towards her.Mr Collins, a clergyman, pays a visit to the Bennets. Mr Bennet and Elizabeth are much amused by his obsequious veneration of his employer, the noble Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as well as by his self-important and pedantic nature. It soon becomes apparent that Mr Collins has come to Longbourn to choose a wife from among the Bennet sisters (his cousins) and Elizabeth has been singled out. At the same time, Elizabeth forms an acquaintance with Mr Wickham, a militia officer who claims to have been very seriously mistreated by Mr Darcy, despite having been a ward of Mr Darcy's father. This tale, and Elizabeth's attraction to Mr Wickham, fuels her dislike of Mr Darcy. At a ball given by Mr Bingley at Netherfield, Mr Darcy becomes aware of a general expectation that Mr Bingley and Jane will marry, and the Bennet family, with the exception of Jane and Elizabeth, make a public display of poor manners and decorum. The following morning, Mr Collins proposes marriage to Elizabeth, who refuses him, much to her mother's distress. Mr Collins recovers and promptly becomes engaged to Elizabeth's close friend Charlotte, a homely woman with few prospects. Mr Bingley abruptly quits Netherfield and returns to London, devastating Jane, and Elizabethbecomes convinced that Mr Darcy and Caroline Bingley have colluded to separate him from Jane.In the spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte and Mr Collins in Kent. Elizabeth and her hosts are frequently invited to Rosings Park, home of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy's aunt; coincidentally, Darcy also arrives to visit. Elizabeth meets Darcy's cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, who vouches for Darcy's loyalty, using as an example how Darcy had recently stepped in on behalf of a friend, who had formed an attachment to a woman who had no affection for him and cared solely for his money. Elizabeth is astonished to discover that said friend was none other than Mr Bingley, and her dislike of Darcy hardens further. Thus she is of no mood to accept when Darcy arrives and, quite unexpectedly, confesses love for her and begs her hand in marriage. Elizabeth rebukes him, and a heated discussion follows; she charges him with destroying her sister's happiness, with treating Mr Wickham disgracefully, and with having conducted himself towards her in an arrogant, ungentleman-like manner. Mr Darcy, shocked, ultimately responds with a letter giving a good account of (most of) his actions: Wickham had exchanged his legacies for a cash payment, only to return after gambling away the money to reclaim the forfeited inheritance; he then attempted to elope with Darcy's young sister Georgiana, thereby to capture her fortune. Regarding Jane, Darcy claims he had observed no reciprocal interest in Jane for Bingley, which combined with Mrs Bennet's ongoing excitement over Mr Bingley's financial prospects led him to conclude that Jane's interest was solely in his wealth. Elizabeth, who had previously despaired over these very behaviors, is forced to admit the truth of Mr Darcy's observations, and begins to wonder whether she has misjudged him. Some months later, Elizabeth and her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner visit Pemberley, Darcy's estate, believing he will be absent for the day. He returns unexpectedly, and though surprised, he is gracious and welcoming. He treats the Gardiners with great civility. Darcy introduces Elizabeth to his sister, and Elizabeth begins to realize her attraction to him. Their reacquaintance is cut short, however, by the news that Lydia has run away with Mr Wickham. Elizabeth and the Gardiners return to Longbourn, where Elizabeth grieves that her renewed acquaintance with Mr Darcy will end as a result of her sister's disgrace.Lydia and Wickham are soon found, then married by the clergy; they visit Longbourn, where Lydia lets slip that Mr Darcy was responsible for finding the couple and negotiating their marriage, at great personal and monetary expense. Elizabeth is shocked but is unable to dwell further on the topic due to Mr Bingley's return and subsequent proposal to Jane, who immediately accepts.Lady Catherine de Bourgh later bursts in on Longbourn; intending to thwart local rumour, she warns Elizabeth against marrying Mr Darcy. Elizabeth refuses her demands. Disgusted, Lady Catherine leaves and drops by to inform her nephew on Elizabeth's abominable behaviour. However, this lends hope to Darcy that Elizabeth's opinion of him may have changed. He travels to Longbourn and proposes again, and this time, his pride and her prejudice done away with, Elizabeth accepts.Main charactersElizabeth BennetElizabeth Bennet is the protagonist of the novel. The reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint. The second of the Bennet daughters, she is 20 years old and is intelligent, lively, attractive and witty but with a tendency to judge on first impression (the "prejudice" of the title) and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments. As the plot begins, her closest relationships are with her father; her sister, Jane; her aunt, Mrs Gardiner; and her best friend, Charlotte Lucas. As the story progresses, so does her relationship with Mr. Darcy, who belongs to a higher social class than herself. The course of Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship is ultimately decided when Darcy overcomes his pride, and Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice, leading to them both surrendering to the love they have for each other.Mr DarcyMr Fitzwilliam Darcy is the male protagonist of the novel. Twenty-eight years old and unmarried, Mr Darcy is also the wealthy owner of the famous family estate of Pemberley in Derbyshire, and is rumored to be worth at least ten thousand pounds a year (which, in 2010, amounts to about one million dollars a year, although even this calibration fails to properly demonstrate Darcy's wealth. Such an income would have put him among the 400 wealthiest families in the country[5]). Handsome, tall, and intelligent, but rather antisocial, his aloof decorum and rectitude are seen by many as an excessive pride. He makes a poor impression on strangers, such as the landed gentry of Meryton, but is valued by those who know him well. Throughout the progression of the plot, Darcy and Elizabeth are forced to be in each other's company, causing each character to see the other in a different light. At the end of the work, both overcome their differences and judgments to fall in love with each other.Jane BennetJane Bennet is the eldest Bennet sister. Twenty-two years old when the novel begins, she is considered the most beautiful young lady in the neighbourhood. Her character is contrasted with Elizabeth's as sweeter, shyer, and equally sensible, but not as clever; her most notable trait is a desire to see only the good in others. As Anna Quindlen wrote, Jane is "sugar to Elizabeth's lemonade."[7] Jane is closest to Elizabeth, and her character is often contrasted with that of Elizabeth. She is favoured by her mother because of her beauty. She grows to be in love with Mr Bingley, a rich man who recently moved to Hertfordshire. Throughout the novel she is hurt by Mr Darcy, Mr Bingley's best friend, as he feels their love is not equal and he doesn't want to see Bingley get hurt. Thanks to Elizabeth, Mr Darcy realises his wrongdoing and brings back Bingley who then marries Jane. Jane is the second Bennet to marry.Mr BennetMr Bennet is the patriarch of the Bennet family, a gentleman of modest income with five unmarried daughters. Mr. Bennet has a sarcastic, cynical sense of humor that he purposefully uses to irritate his wife. Though he loves his daughters (Elizabeth in particular), he often fails as a parent, preferring to withdraw from the never-ending marriage concerns of the women around him rather than offer help.Although he has inherited property, it can only pass to male heirs, so his daughters will be on their own upon his death.Mrs BennetMrs Bennet is the wife of her social superior Mr. Bennet and mother of Elizabeth and her sisters. She is frivolous, excitable, and narrow-minded, and she imagines herself susceptible to attacks of tremors and palpitations. Her public manners and social climbing are embarrassing to Jane and Elizabeth. Her favourite daughter is the youngest, Lydia, who reminds her of herself when younger, though she values the beauty of the eldest, Jane. Her main ambition in life is to marry her daughters off well.ConclusionFrom their love story I realize that it’s stupid to judge a person just by the first impression and always have prejudice on the person who you dislike, and pride sometimes will make you far away from the people. From the book, we can see, because Darcy’s proud, he offended the girl he loved, and because of the prejudice, Elizabeth was failed to see the merits of Darcy, but fortunately, they didn’t miss each other finally. Their love was romantic and also realistic. It’s a romantic love story indeed, but at the same time, the author Austen didn’t confined her aim just to telling love stories. In fact, in most cases, the marriage in her book was not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know a truth that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man. Just like the first sentence said in the book: “It is a truth well known to the world that an unmarried man in posse ssion of a large fortune must be in need of a wife.”The marriages in Pride and Prejudice thus portray and advocate patriarchy within the economic system, social standing and society as a whole. Jane Austen therefore portrays marriage as a patriarchal institution where economic, social and intellectual compatibility as well as love must be present for the relationship to succeed. Pride and Prejudice, like Jane Austen’ other novels, sets marriage as its primary subject. It displays a gentle but witty satire of courtship and marriage. The main part of the novel focuses on the relationship between the attractive Elizabeth and the haughty Darcy. Their marriage reveals the characteristics that make up a successful marriage. It should be founded on mutual understanding, respect, similarity in feeling and taste. In different types of marriages, Austen also indicates that personality is the most influential factor to marriage in the 18th century in Britain. Wealth is not criticized in itself, only if it is used in the wrong way. Maybe it is realistic in their day to manage to fit together the love and property of marriage, together with mutual affection and equal alliance. Personality is also an important factor. Jane Austen’s novel tells us that love is the source for happiness of marriage. And personality is the most important factors in affecting a happy marriage。

Ⅱ. Four Marriage in Pride and PrejudiceThe stories show the ordinary lives, feelings of the ordinary people. They were linked up in a harmonious order under the author's meticulous concepts. The work mainly describes four marriages. Two are the main and assisted by the other two assistant marriages. “Darcy and Elizabeth’s love and marriage is the main theme of this work. After undergoing many setbacks, Darcy’s arrogance and Elizabeth’s prejudice eventually eliminates, the lovers finally get married. T he marriage of Elizabeth’s sister Jane and Darcy’s friend Bingley is another clue. They deeply love each other, but they are multi—blocked, after their departure, Jane misses Bingley very much. The two marriages reflects the another point of view in positive way that marriage should be based on true love, which is the ideal marry in the author’s opinion. The stories seem to be the ordinary lives, feelings and persons linked up in a harmonious order under the others meticulous concepts. However, the marriage between Charlotte and Collins is a negative example with the marriage between Lydia and Wickham, which help to make the plots more tortuous and richer.”2.1 Collins and CharlotteIn Pride and Prejudice, when the homely and plain Charlotte decided to marry Collins, Her reflections were in general satifactory, without thinking highy either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object, it was the only honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune. In fact what Charlotte asks is only a comfortable shatter, a higher social position and a better wealth. which she explains to Elizabeth, “I am not romantic, you know.I never was. I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair, as most people can boast on entering the marriage state.” (Austen, 113) For Collins, he is a man who does not know what love is at all. When Mr. Collins first proposed to Elizabeth, much to her mother's displeasure and her father's joy she firmly and promptly rejected him. He almost immediately transferred his affections to Elizabeth's best friend, Charlotte Lucas, who, twenty-seven and somewhat homely, accepted at once his offer of marriage. Collins’ decision to marry Charlotte is only because of Elizabeth’s refusal to him. What he needs is just a wife who helps him not to be a single man any more.2.2 Lydia and WickhamIn the novel, we known Lydia, Mr.Bennet's third daughter, she was spoilt by her mother, so she was very conceited and arrogant, and behave frivolously. Wickham, he has no other advantage except for his attractive physical appearance. In his opinion, love is lonly recreation. Due to he was trouble with a large debt, so he entices Lydia and get her love easily. When their love does not get the permission from the parents, then they elope. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that their love does not have happy end. Really, Wickham would not marry Lydia, because she was no charming and has nothing to attract him. He does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage was admitted on the condition of Darcy's help.2.3 Jane and BingleyJane was the oldest of Mr.Bennet daughter, a pretty girl of sweet and gentle disposition. Bingley was an immediate success in local society. At the first ball, Jane has a good impression of Bingley, and it is the same to Bingley. They were attracted to each other at once. After the ball,“When Jane and Elizabeth we re alone, the former, who had been cautious in her praise of Mr. Bingley before, expressed to her sister how very much She admired him.”(Austen, 11) For Bingley, he had an easily-led temper. He was so modest and pliable that he had no opinion about his ownmarriage. No matter how obvious his attachment to Jane was, he believed Darcy’s re presentation of Jane’s indifference was true. Because Mr. Bingley’s two sisters didn’t like Jane, they thought Mr. Bingley should choose Georgiana, she is Darcy’s sister as his wife. So they also disagree with Bingley about his marriage with Jane. Under the influences of his sisters and Mr. Darcy, Bingley began to doubt Jane’s affection to him. Finally, he thought Jane didn’t love him, so he left her without saying good-bye. Later, when all the misunderstandings clarified, he came back to Jane at Darcy’s assistance. Bingley’s indecisive character determines his happiness and results that his life was controlled by others. Later on a visit to Bingleys, Jane’s love affair with Bingley is advanced. Even Bingley is apparently on the point of proposing to Jane. Actually Bingly is attracted by Jane’s tenderness and beautiful appearance, while Jane is attracted by his gentle manner. They loved with each other.2.4 Darcy and ElizabethThe heroine of this novel, Elizabeth's love is very important. At the beginning, Elizabeth refused to accept Darcy pursue. Because in Elizabeth's eyes, Darcy is very cold and extremely proud, he is rich and has high social status, and he look down upon the middle-classe girls. In particular, he insulted Elizabeth Bennet, a girl of spirit and intelligence and her father's favorite. He refused to dance with her when she was sitting down for lack of a partner, and said in her hearing that he was in no to prefer young ladies slighted by other men. But on future occasions, however, Darcy began to admire Elizabeth in spite of himself. At a later ball Elizabeth had the satisfaction of refusing him a dance. Bingley's sister Caroline, who was eager to marry Darcy and shrewdly aware of his growing admiration for Elizabeth, was especially loud in her ridicule of the Bennet ter, Elizabeth herself became Caroline's particular target. Darcy admitted to himself that he would be in some danger from the charm of Elizabeth, if it were not for her interior family connections. When Wickham said about Darcy down, making Elizabeth more of his misunderstanding of the deep. However, by the fact that Darcy is a good man. When Lydia and Wickham eloped, Darcy find them and help them. When Lydia came home as heedless as ever, she told Elizabeth that Darcy had attended her wedding. Elizabeth, suspecting the truth, learned from Mr. Gardiner that it was indeed Darcy who brought about the marriage by giving Wickham money. Finally, Elizabeth changed her impression of Darcy, she was more favorably inclined to him than ever before, hoped his coming meant that he still loved her, but he gave no sign. Soon afterward Lady Catherine paid the Bennets an unexpected call. Hoping her own daughter to Darcy, she had charged down with characteristic bad manners to order Elizabeth not to accept his proposal. Unluckily for her own purpose, repeated to Darcy the substance of her conversation with Elizabeth, and he knew Elizabeth well enough to surmise that her feelings to ward him had greatly changed. He returned to Netherfield Park, they fell in love with each other and became engaged. They have an happy life.(Ⅲ.Jane Austen's Views on Marriage in Pride and Prejudice This thesis focuses on marriage in British women writer Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice. The topic is elicited out by the first sentence of this novel, “It is a truth universally acknowle dged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” (Jane Austen, 2003: 1) Firstly, state what does a marriage mean to a woman with analyzing on what was the social status of women at Jane Austen’s time. Secondly, give a deta iled introduction s about fourmarriages in this novel and finally analyze these marriages and reach the conclusion that a marriage should be based on true love, financial stability, mutual attraction, and happiness.3.1 On the Basis of Mutual Attraction and Mutual UnderstandingMutual attraction is the most important in the authoress's views. One who betrays his or her heart will never own ture love that is beyond money and social position. This element is what Austen puts a great deal of emphasis on. The heroine in the fiction, Elizabeth, is a loyal follower of her own affection. She encourages Jane to pursue true love with Bingley, and has a disgust for Caroline's overflowing flattery of Darcy for the purpose of marrying the latter whose fortune and position are a great appeal to herself, regardless of the young gentleman's affection. In face of Mr. Collins's proposal, Elizabeth refuses him without hesitation, for her cousin wants to marry her just because he thinks Elizabeth is fit to be his wife and this union is his bestowment to the Bennets. Elizabeth is committed to her ture feelings, because there is no mutual atrraction between them. She believes happiness marriage is grounded upon mutual attraction. That's why she is so surprised at Charlotte's engagement to Collins whose character is an odd combination of servility andself-conceit, let alone lacking self-independence, while Charlotte is wise and quick. Though, afterwards, Elizabeth is informed of the reason why her best friend makes such as a decision, she feels intolerable to learn to ignore the existence of someone who may live with her all life long with no affection for the sake of a modest living. So we know that the mutual attraction is very important in marriage. The marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy typically shows that we should not simply judge a person from the first sight of appearance and impression. It takes time to understand each other completely. Elizabeth and Darcy both show their prejudice on the first sight without further communication. But Darcy cannot risist his affection to Elizabeth. And a sequence of events that connected with them provide them chances to know each other, so that the misunderstanding between them was got rid of and their relationships grew sounder. The marriage between Lydia and Wickham is the counter example of the first-sight love. They were attracted by the appearance and impulsive sex desires. Lydia didn’t know Wickham at all that he was immoral and owe debt to his neck. Their marriage was proved unhappy at last. Love should base on mutual understanding, and understanding takes time. Hasty marriage results in unhappy marriage3.2 The Importance of Ture LoveElizabeth is the ideal image for women as well as the most charismatic person in the novel. She is Bonnet’s second daughter, an active, intelligent and smart girl. She has a middle-class family background and has not been affected by the formal education belonging to those aristocraticyoung girls, so she isn't good at music and painting, but she has read many books which make her knowledgeable and perceptive. Therefore, when he first arrives in the village, he finds all the persons are far away from those imagined .Although every girl there is young and lovely, he has no interest to anyone except Elizabeth. At first he doesn’t put an eye on Elizabeth. Gradually, he has to admit that Elizabeth is beautiful, distinct and popular, although he insists that Elizabeth hasn't the same social status as him. Darcy is rational because he has a strong sense of power, which agrees on the reality at that time. Although he expresses his love to Elizabeth, he couldn't help showing his arrogance, which makes Elizabeth have misconception and prejudice on Darcy. Darcy loves Elizabeth, but looks down upon her social status. He considers that he has been lowing himself and doing something against his will, personalities and even moral standard. When Darcy talks about his feelings of love, he also expresses the arrogance of these feelings in details, which results in the arousing resentment of Elizabeth; she rejects his marriage proposal, and angrily accuses his insolence. The rational aspect of the heroine Elizabeth shows her clear, calm and actually stressful personality. Compared with her stupid mother, the smooth and lazy father, the shallow-minded, self-willed sister with feather head, Elizabeth is one with ideal mind. She is elegant like her sister Jane, but more intellectually superior unlike her sister being easy to be favorable. She also advises her sister to see through the stupidity and nonsense of those camouflage honest persons. Elizabeth is unique, because she has a deep understanding of all the things around her. In fact both she and Da rcy are extremely sensitive to the social status. Different from Darcy, Elizabeth doesn’t have superiority about her family background and status. Instead, she feels deeply ashamed for her sister’s being lack of fairly education and her mother's rudeness a nd stupidity. Compared with her moderate and generous sister Jane, she is smarter and even more profound. She has a clean understanding about her own social status, which is due to the psychotically sedimentary deposits because she is in a inferior position for long time. Because of this, she resists extremely against the arrogance of Darcy, and she tries her best to protect herself from being hurtled by Darcy's commanding attitude. He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corr ects the shortcomings and mistakes. He is no longer arrogant and has a real love with Elizabeth. With therevealing of the truth, Elizabeth’s prejudice on Darcy becomes deeper. Until when Elizabeth refuses Darcy’s long love letter, she experiences the fier ce shock. When she first knows them two, one loves her and makes her feel happy, and the other treats her in a cold manner, which makes her angryAll these cause her prejudice and ignorance, when she encounters their affairs. Elizabeth wouldn't believe the shameless lies about Darcy said by Han and eliminate the misunderstanding and prejudice. She finally falls in love with Darcy. When the sister asks how she would love Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she see the beautiful lane manor park. The statement seems to refer to the property of Darcy. Therefore, Jane doesn't want the sisters to be kidding. In addition to referring to the specific manor, she also refers the new Darcy seen in the garden. In other words, Darcy changes the attitude of being arrogant and rudest, and this is the reason why Darcy wins Elizabeth’s heart and love. We can imagine that if Da rcy doesn't change his mind, even if other misunderstandings have been resolved, they would not fall in love forever.3.3 The Importance of Financial FoundationAlthough Mrs. Bennet has been described as a comedy character in the work gaining a lot of sarcasm and derision, her universally acknowledged truth-all the wealthy bachelors want to marry a lady, has been proved to be truth which proves another fact that it's the wealth and the number of the wealth that decides the fate of life and marriage. Charlotte knows that the marriage without property would eventually move toward disappointment and suffering. Charlotte is like a rodman catching a fairly plump fish-Collins. But if he doesn’t meet a setback from Elizabeth, and the encouragement of Charlotte, I am afraid that he would not be so willing to propose marriage to Charlotte. The man like Bentley who has fairly numerable money need a beautiful wife, the poor man needs a wife with a huge wealth, like Wickham; It was lucky for Charlotte that she could gain the marriage with Collins although their marriage is not happy at all.In these marriages, it was quite interesting that the women without property really get married with those rich bachelors. However, the happiness brought by marriage to them has not accompanied the husband. In marriage, money is very important. Austin objects such marriage simply based on money. Collins is the heir of Bonnet family; h e doesn’t know what love is. Hewould state some of the inappropriate remarks at any time. Charlotte gets married for money. Eventually she gets nothing more than a rich man, though she has economic security. She doesn’t care about her husband's accompanying and love. She encourages him to clean up the garden more. She sets his living-room in the small house absent of even a small number of sunshine. When her husband makes gaffe in front of their friends, she ignores and turns a deaf ear. Such arrangement f or the story is a perfect irony for” the truth universally acknowledged” at the beginning of the novel. The author expresses great sympathy to the tragic fate of the women at that time and those who had to marry because of economic restraints by the description of the marriage of charlotte. Austen understands completely that the social environment makes man obey not only in material but in psychology, which improved that Austin is a rational author that she prefers true love to survival. Miss Bingley also e xtremely objects the marriage between her brother and Bennet’s eldest daughter Jane. She hopes her brother to marry Darcy’s sister Miss Geovgiana in order to make herself to have the same status.(Ⅳ. The Causes of Jane Austen's View on Marriage4.1 Jane Austen's Living EnviromentWomen’ position in the first half of the 19th century was very low. Jane Austen was born at that time, feminism was not paid attention to by common people. Practically, everyone believed that men were superior sex. Women were considered not only lower than men, but also were very different. The purpose of their lives was marriage, their only proper sphere was the home, while men had all the rest of the world to show their talents. British women had few rights, few opportunities to change their life. At that time, meekness and sacrifice, were the key points for an excellent woman. According to Ilannah More, “to a woman moral excellence is the grand object of education; and of moral excellence, domestic life is to woman the a ppropriate sphere.” For gisborn, too, a woman’ role must be centered on the home, and according to him her main resposibilities involve “contributing daily and hourly to the comfort of husband, of parents, of brothers, and sisters…in the intercourse of domestic life.” Before marriage, a woman must sacrifice for her family. People believed that an virtuous woman was never seperated from her family. Girls in the upper middle-class or in the better-off families, needn’t do housework and had been left with a great deal of time. They may stay at home , study unstematically, for example singing songs, drawing pictures and taking care of the family issues. And they have time to take parties, play cards, and chat with friends. While the situation in poor families is completely different. Girles around 12 or 13 had to leave home to work as servants in order to surport the family, for at that time, parents often have a lot of children and they have ability to surport all the children. Marriage is the only choice for gir ls to relieve from the old family and change their fate. So mothers’ duties was to get their daughters married to high-class. While the marriage market was not always good for them. Sometimes, they got married just because the want the establishment of marriage but not love. Such things was clearly reflected in Pride and Prejudice. As the first sentence of Pride and Prejudice: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”, Jane has cl everly told us: that the main subject of the novel will be courtship and marriage, she has established the humorous tone of the novel by taking a simple subject to elaborate and to speak intelligently of, and she has prepared the reader for a chase in the novel of either a husband in search of a wife, or a women in pursuit of a husband. Jane Austen was born into a supremely happy and resourceful family. Jane and her family lived in Steventon. Steveton Rectory stood at the foot of the lane which leads up to the simple medievalchurch of St Nicholas. Steventon is still a samll rural village, surrounded by fields and woods, in a valley between two main roads. Because away from the cities, Jane's life has been clame. Her parents were never wealthy, but they family atmosphere of harmony and friendliness. Jane and her elder sister Cassandra were inseparable friends from childhood. Their sisterly affection for each other could hardly be exceeded, so Jane is a very heavy emotional person.(4.2 Jane Austen's Emotional LifeJane Austen, a lively and popoular young women, never settle down with a husband. She never married, but it does not mean that she refused the marriage. She always on the look-out for a husband, assessing each young man who came her way. But she known, as a parson's daughter with no hope of a dowry, she knew that however attractive she may have been to the opposite sex, she had only a slender chance of finding a husband in fairly restricted circle of acquaintances in Hampshire. Jane had grown into attractive and lively young woman and was popular guests at private parties, Assembly Room dances and country house balls. There she would meet her friends and the usual string of dancing partners. At Christmas 1795 a good-looking man appeared. His name is Tom Lefroy, was the nineteen-year-old nephew of the Revd George Lefroy, of the rectory at Ashe, a few miles north of Steventon. They flirted, enjoyed meeting at different parties over Christmas and may indeed have felt the strength of sexual attraction. Once, Jane was very attracted to Tom Lefroy, as Jane implies in a letter to her sister, their interest in each other was noticed and remarked on. But finaly, he jilted Jane, because Jane did not have a dowry. When Tom Lefroy came to Hampshire he was in no position to get entangled with Jane. In 1797 Tom Lefroy went back to Ireland to be called to the Irish Bar; he took the opportunity to become engaged to Mary Paul. Therefore, Jane missed her marriage. Another young man she came to know in Kent is Edward Bridges, the brother of her sister-in-law Elizabeth. Edward Bridges was believed to have proposed and been turned down by Jane Austen. Jane Austen once promised to married with Harris Bigg Wither, but during the night- Jane changed her mind. Because Jane and Harris had known each other since childhood. Jane may have been tempted by the prospect of settling down in a fine house with a well-to-do husband. After she discovered it was wrong to marry for money. When Jane saw that far too many women were burdened with child-bearing, and lost their heath, their looks and sometimes their lives. So she dicide that writing was far more important to her than the security of a home.Ⅴ. ConclusionThrough the description of the four marriage in Pride and Prejudice, we can s ee Jane Austen’s views on marriage. Successful marriage should be based on mutual attraction and mutual understanding, even the importance of true love and the necessity of financial foundation. From the novel, we know about the women’s life in the 19th ce ntury. Although Jane Austen wrote the novel in 19th century, but her views are also suitable for the mordern marriage. Nowdays, people show various attitudes toward marriage, for example, some young ladies who are very attractive like to marry a rich men, regardless of his quality personality; or some young men want to marry rich women, even though the women are much older than them. So these people are confined to pursuit of money and meterial enjoyment. If we want to have really happy marriage, we should hold a right and cautious value judgement to marriage.Bibliography[1] Austen,Jane. Pride and Prejudice. New York: Bantam Dell ,2003.[2] Bu Yayun.
