2、The prime mover may be a steam-driven turbine, a hydraulic turbine or water wheel, or an internal combustion engine. Each one of these prime movers has the ability to convert energy in the form of heat, falling water, or fuel into rotation of a shaft, which in turn will drive the generator.

Circuit breakers are necessary to deenergize equipment either for normal operation or on the occurrence of short circuits. Circuit breakers are rated in terms of these duties.

With modern equipment, the relay and breaker opening cause removal of fault within three or four cycles after its initiation.
