When Dee Dee Bridgewater learned that she would become a 2017 NEA Jazz Master, a series of thoughts and feelings flooded her mind. “It was so far out of my orbit and just my whole sphere of thinking,” she said in a conversation at NPR this spring, hours before she formally received her award.
She’s 66—far from retirement age in jazz, and on the extreme forward edge of the NEA Jazz Masters people. So she was aware of her relative youth in the field. She also recognized that there haven’t been many women in the ranks of NEA Jazz Masters: fewer than 20, out of 145. That idea led her to reflect on her predecessors(前任): legendary singers like Betty Carter, who was seated back in 1992, and Abbey Lincoln, who received the nod in 2003.
Bridgewater sought inspiration and advice from both Carter and Lincoln, as she recalls in this period of Jazz Night, which features music recorded during the season opener for Jazz at Lincoln Center. On the program called Songs of Freedom, organized by drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr., Bridgewater sang material associated with Lincoln as well as Nina Simone: an extremely angry song of the civil rights movement, like “Mississippi Goddam”.
A separate concert, “Songs We Love”, found Bridgewater singing less politically charged (but still exc iting) material like “St James Infirmary”, which appears on her most recent album. In words as well as music, this period reveals how seriously Bridgewater takes that responsibility, seeing as how i t connects to her own experience in jazz. But maybe “seriously” isn’t the right word when it comes to Dee Dee, whose effervescence(欢腾) shines through even in a reflective mood.
24. What did Bridgewater think of her winning the award?
A. It confused her.
B. It won great support for her.
C. It gave her much confidence.
D. It was beyond her expectation.
25. What can we learn about the musicians winning NEA Jazz Masters?
A. Women ranked higher than men.
B. Men accounted for a bigger part of them.
C. Most of them were unwilling to retire at first.
D. Many of them received the award at an early age.
26. Who are more likely to have a great influence on Bridgewater?
A. Carter and Lincoln.
B. Ulysses and Lincoln.
C. Nina Simone and Lincoln.
D. Nina Simone and Ulysses.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Bridgewater’s music style.
B. Bridgewater’s music experience.
C. Bri dgewater’s personal characters.
D. Bridgewater’s great achievements.

Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.
For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch(疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection(注射) with a needle. Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized(免疫的) against the flu.
Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your finger. Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.
None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.
The biggest beneficiaries could be people in low and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t req uire refrigeration, can be
self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles—are even better.
“Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu.
B. A patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past.
C. A clinical study that protects people from disease.
D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless.
29. What do we know about the vaccine patch?
A. It causes slight side effects.
B. It is produced by the WHO.
C. It delivers vaccine to the little finger.
D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.
30. What is the feature of the vaccine patch?
A. It’s pain-free.
B. It’s non-storable.
C. It’s costly.
D. It’s environment-friendly.
31. What is Kaija and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot?
A. Cautious.
B. Ambiguous.
C. Favorable.
D. Disapproving.

The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs (地画)in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. It is ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized human-like forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight.
The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian desert in the 1920s. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived here 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle.
The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Holivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because
of the ir numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group.
The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode (腐蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-colored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.
32. What can we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?
A. They were built as a big map.
B. They were formed by nature.
C. They are ancient lines in caves.
D. They are huge markings in a desert.
33. How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive?
A. Two.
B. One.
C. Four.
D. Three.
34. Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?
A. Because of the wind at ground level.
B. Because of the existence of soft soil.
C. Because of the climate and geography.
D. Because of the thick sand on the top.
35. What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean?
A. Non-stop.
B. Ever-lasting.
C. Real-life.
D. High-end.

W: A fter each stop? So guests don’t spend the whole evening driving around on the bus?
M: N o! In fact, we take them to 4 different clubs during the evening. At each club, we’ve booked special VIP entrance, which means no waiting to get in, and everyone gets a free drink.
W: A nything else our listeners should know about the parties?
M: Y es, all guests must be smartly dressed. No jeans or sports shoes. The only exception would be if they want to have a fancy-dress party.
