Reindeer are a kind of deer which live in the Arctic(北极的)area. But their habitats(栖息地)are being taken over
by people. Cutting down trees and building roads have driven
many reindeer out of areas in the US, Canada, and Russia.
To make things worse, the Arctic is slowly heating up. The area now often gets freezing rain instead of snow, which makes it harder
for reindeer to get their food. If they can’t find their food,
they will have nothing to eat but to starve (饿)to death. That’s bad news for native people in the area too. They rely on reindeer for food; clothing, and transportation.
Reindeer also play a key role in the Arctic food chain. Fewer reindeer can mean less food for animals such as wolves.
Government leaders in the US recently took action to help reindeer. They approved(批准)a plan to protect parts of Alaska where the animals live.
“Reindeer are a symbol of the North,” says wildlife expert Justina Ray. “If we take care of them, we’ll be taking care of other Arctic animals too.”

with the help of others. What he wanted was that he could be given strength(力量). On hearing it, all of the guests were speechless. After
a while, there was a round of loud applause(掌声).

I was born in New York City and lived there until I was five. After my brother was born, my parents wanted us to grow up knowing our culture, so we moved back to India. But every summer, we return to New York to visit friends, so I feel that I have two homes instead of one.
A lot of my American friends think of teens(少年) in India only as hardworking, book-smart students---and to some degree that’s a true. One reason is that ,unlike in the US . whether an Indian teen can go to college is decided by his scores only. There are, however, lots of similiarities between Indian and American teens. We wear jeans ,eat out,and watch movies. The differences are surprisingly few.
Sometimes I find myself thinking, what it would be like if my friends of both countries could meet. I don’t think they would
have any trouble asking themselves the same questions:
Who am I ? What kind of person do I want to be ? And what
can I give back to the world?
The answers I’ve heard are similar everywhere.
Everyone believes we should do something to improve our world. Everyone believes our generation cannot be influenced easily by the prejudices(偏见) of past generations; not only do we accept differences among us,we also appreciate them.
Besides, all of us have already got some ideas about religious argument, globaling warming---things that have matured(成熟) us faster than our parents and grandparents
And because of this, everyone feels that no matter how old we are or where we are or where we come from, we each should try to unite through differences that drove us apart in the past. That’s what I’ve lear ned on both sides of the word.
( )48. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that ____.
A. the author was born in India
B. the author’s family are from India
C. the author goes to school in America
( )49. In Paragraph 2, the author wants to ____.
A. show there are few differences between Indian and American teens
B. tell us American teens can go to college only by high scores
C. encourage American teens to study as hard as Indian teens
( )50. The underlined word “them” in the 4th paragraph refers to(指代)____.
A. prejudices
B. generations
C. differences
( )51. The author holds the view that ____.
A. younger generation are easily influenced by the prejudices

Tom is in front of a group of people. He is blindfolded, but he can still show these people something amazing. The young man calls it “the art of memory”. First, the people who are watching him randomly(随机) choose sixty numbers. After that, a helper reads the number to Tom. Then, after hearing them just once,Tom repeats the numbers in the correct order from memory. He dose this first in the order he heared them. Then, he does it again—backwards!
Tom has a very special kind of memory. He explains in his own words, “It’s a kind of memory that is connected to what I see . It means every idea that I learn and everything I read become a part of me. Normally, a person who dosen’t have the gift, and who dosen’t study memory, often forgets things—even an entire book. Not me .” Tom says that with his “gift”, he has memorized more than 250 books!
Memorizing more than 250 books is surprising, but it’s not the only surprising thing ahout Tom. He says that he can remember every detail of every day of his life. He also says that he can remember these details from the time he was less than one year old!
Memory is very difficult to understand. Scientists don’t really know how it works yet. Tom’s family genes(基因) may hold important information about his memory.
“The most important question,” says neurobiologist(神经生物学家) Dr. Antonio Malgaroli, “is to understand which is from heredity(遗传),and which is from the environment.”
