What Playing the Piano Has Given Me
Hi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I've been taking piano lessons since I was 6 and I just love it so much. Playing the piano has become one of my biggest passions and hobbies. It's brought so many wonderful things into my life that I want to share with you.
The first and biggest thing I've gotten from piano is a newfound patience and discipline. When I started learning, everything seemed so hard and frustrating at times. My little fingers could barely stretch to reach all the notes and keys. Some of the songs and pieces sounded impossible to play smoothly. But my piano teacher Miss Sylvia told me that with regular practice and by taking it step-by-step, it would get easier over time. And she was totally right!
At first, I could only focus for 10 or 15 minutes at a time before getting antsy and bored during practice sessions. Slowly but surely though, I got better at sitting still and repeating sections over and over without losing interest as quickly. Now I can practice for a full hour if I need to master a difficult new piece! It takes a ton of patience, but I've learned that kind of
discipline. And it's helped me academically too – I find I can concentrate much better when doing my homework or prepping for tests these days. My parents have noticed the positive change as well.
Playing piano has also opened up my world to all kinds of amazing music I never knew about before. When I started, I thought piano songs were just the simple nursery rhymes my parents sang to me as a baby. But then Miss Sylvia introduced me to famous composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin who wrote these incredible, beautiful, emotional masterpieces for the piano. Every lesson, I get to learn new songs that tell a sort of story without any words at all! The music just captures feelings of joy, sadness, fear, love and more in such a powerful way. It's like traveling through time whenever my fingers dance across the keys.
Some of the piano music has also inspired me to start writing my own little songs and melodies. I'll hear a certain chord progression or rhythm that I think is cool and try improvising around that. Sometimes I'll write down the notes so I can keep playing my made-up songs over and over. Who knows, maybe I'll become a great composer someday too! Even if I don't though,
it's just fun to play around and be creative after learning so much music theory and technique.
Another awesome benefit of piano has been getting to perform in front of audiences! Our piano studio does two recitals every year – one in the spring and one around the holidays. At first, the thought of playing on a stage in front of so many people terrified me. My hands would get all sweaty and shaky whenever I thought about it too much. But Miss Sylvia had us do mock recitals during our group lessons to prepare. We all got to practice playing through our pieces for each other first while getting used to the spotlight.
I'm not going to lie, the first couple of recitals were still pretty nerve-wracking! But now I've done almost 10 of them. I've learned to breathe deeply, stay focused, and not let little mistakes ruin the whole performance if they happen. It's such an incredible feeling of pride and accomplishment whenever I walk off that stage after nailing a difficult piece. Tons of people have complimented my playing which makes me feel so confident. I've become way more comfortable speaking and performing in front of others, which will definitely help me out in the future with class presentations, public speaking, and more.
Probably the best part about playing piano though has been meeting some of my very best friends in the whole world. The studio has group lessons for kids around my age, so we all get to hang out together once a week working on the same music.
We'll split off into teams and challenge each other to nail certain sections or we'll take turns picking out fun new warm-up exercises to do together. We've all bonded over our shared love and passion for piano and music in general. Even though we're different ages, we're like one big musical family always cheering each other on.
Some of my piano buddies have already gotten me into listening to pop and rock artists like Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, and The Weeknd who play piano or have cool piano parts in their songs. Others have shown me funny videos of people doing amazing stunts and tricks on pianos. We trade music recommendations and playlists all the time. It's crazy how you can instantly click with other people over this one special interest! During our socials after group class, we'll literally spend hours at someone's house playing duets together on their family's piano, having jam sessions, and seeing who can riff off each other the best. I'm constantly blown away by how talented my friends are.
So in summary, playing piano has brought me life-long skills like patience, discipline, and confidence. It's opened up my appreciation for different musical genres and cultures from around the world. Piano has allowed me to express myself through writing my own music while also performing on a stage regularly. And most importantly, it's led me to form deep friendships with others who share my passion. Sometimes I'll be having a terrible day at school or feeling sad about something, but then I'll go to my lesson or group class and everything's better. As soon as I sit down at those keys, all my worries temporarily fade away and I'm just totally present playing the music I love.
I honestly can't imagine my life without the piano now. It's basically become a part of my identity at this point. Looking ahead, I plan on sticking with it all through middle school, high school, and hopefully getting a scholarship to study music in college someday. Maybe I'll even tour the world someday playing classical concerts! Or I could pursue a career as a composer for movies, TV shows, and video games. Heck, I may just want to teach piano lessons myself when I'm older since Miss Sylvia has been such an inspiration. No matter what though, piano will always be my first true love. Those 88 keys have
already given me so much joy, and I can't wait to see where this lifelong journey takes me next.。
