Happy birthday! Do birthday really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthday celebrate the day when we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggest another year of growth and maturity(成熟)-or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story.
Growing old is not exactly for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心) American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re young as you feel.”Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart”.
Many older Americans find the “golden years”to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition, medical care, and housing. Some even experience age discrimination(歧视). American sociologist Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.
Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the group of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are ready noticing this growing group of consumer.
56.Growing up is a wonderful thing because ____________
A.people can celebrate their birthday
B.people can become more mature and wiser
C.people can receive many presents
D.people will feel younger at heart
57.We can infer from the second paragraph that __________
A.young people lack experience and wisdom
B.American older people often joke about their old age
C.American culture is very young
D.different countries have different opinions on the old age
58.What does the first sentence in the third paragraph mean?
A.the golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical care
B.the old in America are leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing C.the old in America have to retire at the age of 65
D.American social security benefits are not good
59.What does the underlined word “in” in the last paragraph mean?
A.serious B.cool
C.disappearing slowly D.growing fast
60.According to this passage, which of the following statement is correct?
A.the young are much more respected than the old in America
B.the old are much more respected than the young in America.
C.growing old makes people feel proud in America.

The round-the-clock(24小时不断的) availability that cell phone have brought to people’s lives may be taking a toll on family life, a new study suggests. The study, which followed more than 1,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “spillover” between work and home life-and, in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.
Spillover essentially(本质上) means that the line between work and home begins to become unclear. Work life may invade home life when a parent is taking job-related calls at home, for instance-or family issue may start to take up work time. For example, a child may call mom at work, telling her “microwave exploded”, explained Noelle Chesley, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing forever more spillover between work and home.
This may be especially true for working woman, the study found. Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep(潜入) into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions being “connected” meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came into work life.
Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley. “Employers”, she said, “could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are ‘reasonable’”. “For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time,” Chesley said.
61.What does the underlined phrase “taking a toll on” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Explaining B.Protecting. C.Extending. D.Damaging. 62.What is the purpose of offering the example “microwave exploded” in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the microwave is of poor quality.
B.To indicate how dependent the child is.
C.To indicate family issues affect work hours.
D.To show work time creeps into family life.
63.As a result of negative “spillover”, people will feel ___________.
A.less satisfied with their family life
B.less satisfied with their work
C.angry with their troublesome children
D.unwilling to get married at an early age
64.According to Chesley, what is the best solution to the problem caused by cell phones?
A.Refuse to use cell phones.
B.Separate work hours from family time.
C.Ignore coming calls during family time.
D.Encourage women to stay at home.
65.We can learn from the passage that __________.
A.spillover makes the line between work and home unclear
B.cell phones seem to be convenient to families
C.cell phones affect men as much as women
D.we can do nothing to solve the problem

The flag, the most common symbol(象征) of a nation in the modern world, is also one of the most ancient. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country.
The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive(原始的) artifact. It is, rather, the product of thousands of years’ development. Historians believe that it has two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.
Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People’s food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.
Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems(图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves.
These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked. The king of China around 1,000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.
66.The best title for the passage would be ______________.
A.Development of the National Flag B.Power of the National Flag
C.Types of Flags D.Uses of Flags
67.The underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 means
A.impossible to make sure of B.likely to be protected

68.The earliest flags were connected with heavenly power because ____________.
A.they could tell wind direction
B.they could bring good luck to fighters
C.they were handed down by the ancestors
D.they were believed to stand for natural forces
69.What does the author know of the first national flag?
A.He knows when it was sent to Europe.
B.He believes it was made in Egypt.
C.He thinks it came from China.
D.He doubts where it started.
70.What will the author most probably talk about next?
A.The role of China in the spread of the national flag.
B.The second ancestor of the national flag.
C.The use of modern flags in Europe.
D.The importance of modern flags.

Before astronauts can go into space, they have to have the right suit. That’s why NASA(美国家航天和航空局) scientists are developing a kind of space suit-lighter and more flexible than before. These new space suits will have more mobility for the astronauts, but will not need much maintenance(保养). NASA wants the suits to include new technology that can help astronauts be safe in outer space.
Right now, the American space suit weights about 275 pounds and is big and massive. But the suit is easy to work in for long periods of time. The Russian space suit is less complex, but is used only a few times and then gets thrown away.
“Finding the right balance is always going to be a challenge,”said long-time American astronaut Jeff Williams, who has worn both types of suits. Space suits protect astronauts from both extreme heat and freezing temperatures. They carry life-packs with oxygen for the astronauts. They also protect astronauts from radiation.
Scientists are using computers to design the new suits. This allows them to change the design again and again, and to even test the design out before actually making anything.
“There’s a lot more capable tools and technology to get the job done-a lot more knowledge, as well.”Said Joe Kosmo. Kosmo helped design, develop and test suits during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and shuttle periods.
These new space suits will be much lighter and use a new kind of complex material. They also will have a smaller life-pack, thanks to tiny electronics. NASA hopes to have the first prototypes(原型) in development by 2010 and confirm the suit by 2012. This will be in time for the launch of the Orion spaceship in 2014.
71.The main characteristic of the new space suit is that it will ___________.
A.not need much maintenance B.be easy to work in
C.be lighter and more flexible D.help astronauts be safe in outer space 72.The disadvantage of the Russian space suit is that ______________.
A.it is big and massive B.it is too complex
C.it can only be used a few times D.it costs too much to make
73.What does the underlined part “both types of suits” refer to?
A.The new space suit and the present American space suit.
B.The present American and Russian space suits.
C.The new pace suit and the present Russian space suit.
D.The Apollo space suit and the Mercury space suit.
74.A smaller life-pack is designed for the new space suit because ___________.
A.it is safer than a larger one
B.it can make the space suit much lighter
C.it can hold more oxygen for the astronauts
D.it is more useful to protect the astronauts from radiation
75.We can learn from the passage that ____________.
A.the new space suit has been put into use already
B.Joe Kosmo is an experienced astronaut
C.it’s the first time that computers have been used to develop space suits
D.the new space suit is likely to be put into practical use in 2014

第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分45分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题。

(请注意问题后的字数要求)
The earliest observance of thanksgiving on this continent was with special services in Virginia as early as 1607. The first Thanksgiving Festival began on December 13th in 1621 at Plymouth, Massachusetts. It started as a harvest festival with the people thanking God for giving them sufficient crops. That first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days with the people enthusiastically participating.
On June 20, 1676 the town of Charlestown, Massachusetts issued the First Thanksgiving Proclamation. By unanimous vote the governing council instructed the clerk, Edward Rawson, to proclaim June 29th as a day of thanksgiving.
George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789, the year of his inauguration as President of the United States of America. He called for another thanksgiving Day in 1795. With other presidents and state governors proclaiming days of thanksgiving at various times there was no effort to organize a yearly Thanksgiving Day until Mrs. Sarah Joseph Hale struggled in 1827. It took thirty-six years to achieve victory when, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made his Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. __________.
Today Thanksgiving Day is a legal holiday with most government and private employees being given the day off. Some companies and most schools also shut down the following Friday. Yes, the United Sates of America, for most purposes, observes Thanksgiving Day.
But, it appears that Thanksgiving Day, like most other national and religious holidays, has been highly commercialized, to the point that many people forget what we are supposed to be celebrating. If we were to survey people on the street and ask, “What stands out in your mind when you think of Thanksgiving Day?”We would probably get answers like: turkey, dinner, pilgrims, fall, pumpkins, corn stalks.etc.
But, how many people on Thanksgiving Day actually pause and do what the name of the event suggests? What portion of the celebrators do stop to thank God for our nation and for all we have?
A psalm commands us, “ Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.”
As we approach Thanksgiving Day, let’s not focus on the food, which are gifts. Let’s focus on the giver. Let’s thank God for all he has provided. Let’s call on his name and invite him to be present at our table. Let’s celebrate Thanksgiving Day with grateful hearts.
76.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
__________________________________________________________________________ 77.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
Many persons have ignored the original meaning of the Thanksgiving Day because it is often
celebrated commercially.

As is reported, a Charming Teacher contest, using the “Super Girl” model to teachers was launched in a city, which raised a lot of debates.
Some students in our class think the contest is very good because they believe teacher should show their talent in public instead of just being limited to the teaching. At the same time, it can help change teacher’s image which used to be only serious and industrious.
However, I think the other way round. I hold the view that teaching is not entertainment, so it’s unnecessary for a teacher to be good-looking, and holding such a contest is just misleading the teacher’s role. On the other hand, it is unfair to the older teachers who have a wealth of teaching experience. They can teach students better and tha t’s where a teacher’s real charm lies.
【亮点点击】文章要点齐全,体裁、时态把握准确,语言规范地道,脉络清晰,行文流畅,用词准确。

使用了较多的高级词汇和短语,如:launch; be limited to; the other way round; on the other hand; good-looking等。

还恰当使用了一些结构复杂的从句,如:定语从句(如:which raised a lot of debates; which raised a lot of debates; which used to be only serious and industrious 等);同位语从句(如:that teaching is not entertainment);表语从句(如:where a teacher’s real charm lies.)。

此外一些非谓语动词(如:holding such a contest)以及一些连接和过渡成分(如:on the other hand, however)的合理使用,都大大提升了文章的表达效果。
