13、Someday in the future we may not need to have money in our pockets. Is life easier when people don’t need to carry anycurrencyat all? Is money heavy to carry? Is it safe to carry money? Maybe in the future each of us will have only one small plastic credit card. We will use it to buy all the things we now buy with money. We will not need money to pay for things.
Of course we may still have some of the same problems with cards we now have with money. Sometimes we lose money. Maybe we will lose the cards. Maybe someone will take the card. Someone may even make a card that looks like our
card. Since we can’t buy anything without our cards, the credit card may be no better than currency.
Is there something easier to use than credit card? Each of us has a thumbprint(拇指纹). No two thumbprints are the same. Maybe someday the government will keep people’s thumbprints with a number. When you want to buy something you will put your thumb on a machine or a computer. Each store or business will have one. Everyone’s thumbprint will be in the computers. 15、All living things on Earth need water to live. Yet humans are facing serious water problems. According to the United Nations, today over 113 million people live without a safe water supply close to home.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1443. It is on Mar 22 each year. From Mar 22 to 23 is also the China Water Week. The first y ear’s theme is “Waste water”. It tried to call people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
In Australia people make good use of waste water. Most Australians have a grass lawn around their home instead of washing the car in the street. Many of them wash it on the lawn to keep the grass longer so that it covers the ground and reduce evaporation.
Rainwater may seem useless to you. But you can also reuse it. People in Germany collect rainwater to wash their toilets. Most houses in the country that are built in the last few years have rainwater collection devices(设备). Rainwater is collected from the root, and then linked to the toilet. But if you don’t have the device just put a bucket(桶)under your roof when it rains.
Water makes up 21 percent of Earth’s surface. But we can only use a very small part of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
Over 30 percent of the waste water in the world goes back into the nature. It has not been cleaned and pollutes the rivers and lakes. Unsafe water makes around 342,000 people die each year.
By 2030, about half of the world’s population could be facing water problem. By 2050, as many as seven billion people across the world could not have enough water supplie s. The world’s population might be 4.3 billion by then. 1.From paragraph 1, we can learn that___________ .

16、Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ b ehavior?
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.
But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarte rs of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”
1.What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean?
A.Quick. B.Crazy. C.Careful.
2.Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the text?
A.They like difficult tasks.
B.They don’t care about costs.
C.They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
3.How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens’ behavior?
A.By comparing it with how a car works.
B.By comparing it with an accident.
C.By showing research findings.
4.What can we learn from the text?
A.Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.
B.Peer influence is bad on teenagers.
C.Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
