Part I Reading Comprehension(共20小题,每题2分,共40分)Directions:In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions.Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer On the answer sheet.Passage OneQuestions 1~5 are based on the following passage.Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a meaningful activity. Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families.Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables are superior to those purchased from markets. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family diet.Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening. One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house, so the gardener can work in it whenever they are free.Soils for vegetables should be easily broken up and porous (多孔的) for quick water drainage and good aeration (透气). Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.1. Many people find home gardening____A. expensive and boringB. interesting and enjoyableC. time-consuming and inconvenientD. neither interesting nor enjoyable2. A well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of freshvegetables_____A. all year roundB. whenever you need nutritious foodC. for a greater part of the yearD. throughout spring3. The amount of money you spend on your garden ___A. can be largeB. must be largeC. can not be largeD. must not be small4. Which of the following statements is true?A. Vegetables need to have as much shading as possible:B. A small garden is much better than a large one.C. Homeowners can freely choose the soil for their vegetable garden.D. Whenever possible, the vegetable garden should be close to your home.5. From the passage we can conclude that_____A. vegetables need little care while growingB. vegetables can be grown on almost any kind of soilC. vegetable gardening is an indispensable part of life for urban andsuburban peopleD. vegetable gardening is a good pastime for retired peoplePassage TwoQuestions 6~10 are based on the following passage. In old days, when a glimpse of stocking was looked upon as something so shocking as to distract the serious work of an office, secretaries were men. Then came the First World War and the male secretaries were replaced by women. A man's secretary became his personal servant, in charge of remembering his wife's birthday and buying her presents; taking his suits to thedry-cleaners; telling lies on the telephone to keep away people he did not wish to speak to; and, of course, typing and filing and taking shorthand. Now all this may be changing again. The microchip (芯片) and high technology is sweeping the British office, taking with it much of the routine clerical (文书的) work that secretaries did. "Once office technology takes over generally, the status of the job will rise again because it will involve thehigh-tech work-and then men will want to do it again."That was said by one of the executives (male) of one of the biggest secretarial agencies in this country. What he has predicted is already under way in the U. S.Once high technology has made the job of secretary less routine (泛味的), will there be a male takeover? Men should be careful of thinking that they can walk right into the better jobs. There are a lot of women secretaries who will do the job as well as they--not just because they can buy negligees (妇女长睡衣) for the boss's wife, but because they are as efficient and well-trained to cope with word processors and computers as men.6. Before 1914 female secretaries were rare because they_____A. were less efficient and less trained than menB. were looked down upon by menC. would have disturbed the other office workersD. wore stockings and were not as serious as men7. A female secretary has been expected, besides other duties, to____A. be her boss's memoryB. do everything her boss asks her to doC. clean her boss's clothesD. telephone the boss's wife8. Secretaries, until recently, had to do a lot of work now done by____A. machinesB. other staffC. servantsD. wives9. A secretary in the future will __A. have more work to doB. be better paidC. have higher statusD. have less work to do10. The writer believes that before long __A. both men and women can act as secretariesB. men will be better than machinesC. men will take over women's jobs as secretariesD. women will operate most office machinesPassage ThreeQuestions 11~15 are based on the following passage.Humanity is a new experiment on planet Earth. For most of its history, life on Earth was restricted to the sea. Living things began to populate the land slightly over 400 million years ago, and humans have existed for no more than 3 million years. One way to represent the evolution of life is to compress the 4.6-billion-year history of Earth into a l-year-long film. In such a film, Earth forms as the filmbegins on January 1, and through all of January and February it cools and is cratered (变成坑状) and the first oceans form. But those oceans remain lifeless until sometime in March or early April, when the first living things develop. The 4-billion-year history of Precambrian (前寒武纪) evolution lasts until the film reaches mid-November, when primitive ocean life begins to evolve into complex organisms such as trilobites (三叶虫).If we examine the land instead of the oceans, we find a lifeless waste. But once our film shows plant and animal life on the land, about November 28, evolution proceeds rapidly. Dinosaurs, for example, appear about December 12 and vanish by Christmas Eve, as mammals (哺乳动物) and birds flourish.Throughout the 1-year-run of our film there are no humans, and even during the last days of the year as the mammals rise and dominate the landscape, there are no people. In the early evening of December 31, vaguely human forms move through the grasslands, and by late evening they begin making stone tools. The Stone Age lasts until about 11 ~ 45 pm, and the first signs of civilization, towns and cities, do not appear until 11 ~ 54 pm. The Christian era begins only 14 seconds before the New Year, and the Declaration of Independence is signed with 1 second to spare.11. In comparing all of Earth's geological evolution to one calendar year, theauthor shows____A. just how recently humanity has arrived on the sceneB. just how simple it is to understand the history of EarthC. just how early humanity appears on planet EarthD. just how difficult it is to understand the history of Earth12. According to the passage, primitive ocean life begins to evolve intocomplex organisms_____A. in the middle of DecemberB. when Earth is crateredC. at the beginning of NovemberD. when the land is still a lifeless waste13. It is indicated in the passage that_____A. Earth is cool at firstB. Earth is hot at the beginningC. there are oceans at the beginningD. there is life in the ocean in late February14. In the one-year-long film dinosaurs____A. die out on December 25B. appear after December 25C. die out on December 24D. appear on December 2415. In the compressed history of Earth the Declaration of Independence issigned____A. a long time before the New YearB. immediately after the New Year's DayC. just one second before the New YearD. right on the New Year's DayPassage FourQuestions 16~20 are based on the following passage.Internet-addicted job seekers may be partly the cause of the fact that it is taking the unemployed 23 % longer to find a new position than it took during the last recession (经济萧条),when the "benefits" of online job searching were unavailable. "A growing number of unemployed Americans waste time browsing ( 浏览) the estimated 4,000 to 5,000 online job sites, filling them with resumes, and then waiting for replies. It is common for long-time joblessness,” argues Professor John A. Challenger. Although the Internet has the potential to be very useful for job seekers and it has become the primary tool for many, Challenger believes that it should be considered secondary to the traditional technique of meeting would-be employers in person. In addition to slowing job search efforts, the Internet is making the hiring process longer for the employer. In a survey of 5,000 hiring managers by an online résumé~ site, 72 % said that a majority of the resumes they received in response to an online job posting did not match the position's description."The more unrelated résumés managers have to go through in order to select the few to bring in for interviews, the longer it takes to fill the position," points out Challenger. "One result of this has been the increased use of screening software by employers. This will make it even more difficult for job seekers to get their résumés in front of the hiring executive for an interview.""All of this is not to say that the Internet has not revolutionized job hunting. It has certainly made it easier for someone in San Francisco, for example, to search for job openings in Miami. In addition, the ability to conduct keyword searches has reduced the amount of time it takes to find the type of position a person is seeking.""Job seekers must learn how to use the Internet as a tool, rather than just relying on it as a means for submitting electronic résumés," concludes Challenger.16. According to the passage, the coming of online job searching brings __A. longer waiting time for the unemployedB. longer computer technology training for the job seekersC. more unemployment throughout the U. S. A.D. more job opportunities in the Internet world17. Professor Challenger thinks ___ should be considered more important bythe unemployed.A. browsing the Internet job sitesB. sending résumés by emailC. going to a traditional training centerD. meeting the potential employers in person18. The Internet is making the hiring process longer for the employer because__A. the speed of the Internet is not fast enoughB. there is a lot of false information on the NetC. the hiring position cannot be fully described on the NetD. it has drawn many unfitting résumés19. It can be inferred that "screening software" in Paragraph 3 is used to____A. draw more job seekers to the websitesB. get rid of some unrelated resumesC. serve as a bridge between the job seekers and the employersD. provide the job seekers with more chances to visit the employers inperson20. According to the passage-the Internet has revolutionized job huntingby____A. changing the recession cycleB. opening more chances for job seekersC. improving the reemployment situationD. reducing the interview timePart ⅡVocabulary and Structure ( 共40小题,每题1分,共40分) Directions: In this part there are forty incomplete sentences. Reading ComprehensionIt was not much fun to travel on one of the old sailing ships. Life was hard for both passengers and crew. In the 17th century, sailing ships were small and roiled(摇荡)heavily in rough seas, so most of the passengers were seasick. There were no toilets, and the spaces below deck where passengers had to stay during gales(狂风)were often not more than 5 foot high. Water was scarce and the little water they got was brown and smelt terrible. Food was a problem, too—there was only salted meat, ship ' s biscuits and cheese, but the cheese was so hard that sailors often made buttons out of it for their jackets and trousers. There were no vegetables or fruit, so the people on board often fell ill. The sailors, however, were a bit better off than the passengers. They each had a bottle of beer a day, and they needed. The work they had to do was hard and dangerous. Courage was needed, for the heavy sails had to be set and taken down in all kinds of weather, and quite often sailors were swept overboard in a gale. Almost the worst thing about the voyages was the time they took up to 70 days for the journey across the Atlantic. Not surprisingly, everybody was overjoyed when they at last approached land and stepped ashore. But some ships never arrived.SSS_SINGLE_SEL1.In the 17th century______.A life on old sailing ships was enjoyableB people enjoyed sailing old. ships in rough seasC most of the passengers **fortable when the ship was rollingD it was very painful for both passengers and crew during the voyageSSS_SINGLE_SEL2.The passengers______when the ship was heavily rolling.A slept wellB could drink a lot of waterC had to stay below deckD had a big room of more than 5 foot highSSS_SINGLE_SEL3.Which of the following statements is true?A Passengers had a lot of vegetables, but no fruit.B The sailors had four bottles of beer a day.C The people on the ship often fell ill because of the lack of vegetables and fruit.D The food for the passengers was more and better than that for the crew.SSS_SINGLE_SEL4.Which of the following statements is true?A The sailors often had to set the sails in bad weather.B The sailors had no courage.C The sailors were happy to be swept overboard in a strong wind.D A 70-day-journey across the Atlantic was the sailors' happiest thing.SSS_SINGLE_SEL5.When the people saw the land, ______.A only passengers were gladB the sailors had to swim ashoreC they were surprised at the news that some ships never arrivedD all of them were excitedA lot of people are their own enemies. They regard themselves as unlikely to succeed in college and often feel that there have been no accomplishments in their lives. In my first year of college especially, I saw people get themselves down all too quickly. There were two students in my class who failed the first test and seemed to give up immediately. From that day on, they walked into the classroom carrying defeat on their shoulders the way other students carried textbooks under their arms. Both students hang on until about mid-term. When they disappeared for good, no one took much notice, for they had already disappeared in spirit after that first test. They are not the only people in whom I have seen the self-doubt do its work. I have really wanted to shake them by the shoulders and say, "You are not dead. Be proud and pleased that you have broughtyourself here to college. Be someone. Breathe. Hope. Act. "Such people should not use self-doubts as an excuse for not trying. They should pull themselves together and get to work. They should starttaking notes in class and trying to learn. It listed all the tradesmen in each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on one' s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside. Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of**merce, but its power is still remarkable. Our local grocer' s shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of **petition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local newswhile doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend whohappened to be passing. 2001年广东省普通高等学校本科插班生招生考试英语试题Part I Reading Comprehension(40%)Passage oneDid you know that the empty plastic soft drink bottles you throw away every day can be turned into carpet or automobile parts ?That used glass bottles and aluminum cans can be turned into new ones? And that yesterday’s newspaper can be turned into tomorrow’s ?It all happens because of recycling .This simple waste we throw away is a “natural resource” that , with recycling, can be used to produce a variety of mew products.Unfortunately, America recycles only 10% of its rubbish ,burns 10% and deposits (存放)80% in waste disposal grounds. As a result , it has to cope with a serious solid waste problem.Every year, Americans throw away about 160 million tons of rubbish. Of that total, plastics make up less than 8% , paper about 36% , and glass and metal about 20% , all by weight . Plastics are naturally lighter, but still, when pressed together, account for only about 20% by volume(体积). As a result, in the past 10 years the United States’ waste disposal grounds have decreased from about 18, 500 to 6,000. In five years 2,000 more will close. In the process of finding solutions, some people have proposed to stop using plastics. Unfortunately, stopping using plastics would do much harm and no good. We would lose all of the safety, health and convenience features of plastics.Besides, packaging(包装) would still be needed. A1987 study shows what would happen if plastics were not used---the energy needed to produce other packaging, its cost, and the volume of waste collected would all rise greatly. Some Americans believe part of the answer to Ameri ca’s waste problem lies in recycling everything from glass to metals to paper to plastic.Today, recycling is on the rise. There are now more than 1,000 waste recycling programs in the U. S. Many are beginning to recycle plastics.Right now, almost 200 companies are recycling millions of used plastic containers into toys, traffic signs, wastebaskets, floor materials, and park benches.Plastics are among the easiest materials to recycle. More than 150 million pounds or 20% of all plastic soft drink bottles were recycled in 1987.1. What can’t the plastic soft drink bottle be turned into?A. NewspapersB. Automobile partsC. ToysD. Being curious, he studied preserved meats under the microscope and found that if meat were frozen quickly on a very cold day, ice crystals did not have time to form long needles and the meat cells were not damaged.Birdseye believed that if he could freeze other foods very rapidly, the same thing might happen. But, since there are not many days when the temperature drops 40 or 45 degrees below zero-even in Labrador-some way had to be found to freeze things rapidly without depending on the weather. Remembering that salty water can get very cold without freezing, Birdseye placed some cabbages in salt water and then exposed them to freezing winds. The cabbages froze quickly.Later, Birdseye invented a machine to freeze food while they were very fresh. Today, stores sell a great variety of frozen foods, and some foods that were once available only in certain districts or in season are now readily available in most communities(社区)in any season.1.To freeze foods quickly, Birdseye experimented with ______ .A.a microscopeB.meat in salt waterC.meat in freezing windsD.cabbages2.Cell damage is caused by ______ .A.salty waterB.extremely low temperaturesC.outdoor freezing methodsD.needle-shaped ice crystals3.Birdseye’s principal discovery regarding food preservation was that ______ .A.rapid freezing would reduce cell damageB.foods could be frozen and preserved for later useC.salty water can get very cold without freezingD.meat must be frozen at 45 degrees below zeroter, Birdseye invented ______ .A.a refrigeratorB.a machine that would freeze foods quicklyC.a machine that would freeze foods slowlyD.the icebox5.Much of the popularity of today’s frozen foods is due to the fact that ______ .A.foods may be widely distributedB.disease can be eliminatedC.every American home has a deep-freezeD.such foods are now considered luxuries Passage TwoAstronomers in California have spent the past decade designing a revolutionary, 10-meter telescope with four times the “seeing power” of any functional scope on earth. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers thenearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; he does so with skill and polish; “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned. “ Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is :” This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on. Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only”having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36.According to the passage, when a man is buying clothes, ______.A.he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityB.he chooses things that others recommendC.he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right thingsD.he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear正确答案:C37.What do men care about the fit of new clothes?A.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average size.B.Most men just assume that the size is right for them.C.They make sure a thing fits before they buy it.D.They do not worry whether a thing first well or not.正确答案:C38.What does a man do when he cannot get exactly what he wants?A.He buys a similar thing of the color he wants.B.He usually does not buy anything.C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.正确答案:B39.What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.D.They listen to advice but seldom take it.正确答案:A40.What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A.Men do not try clothes on in a shop.B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.C.Women care more about the quality than men.D.The time they take over buying clothes.正确答案:DAs a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling, without requiring the seller to purchase goods from the person who buys his products, or vice versa. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product. Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value, that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal, which would be a difficult and time-consuming task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties’desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter fish bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to barter fish for bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to exchange bananas is or not keen on fish. Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a person could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Even when a person actually produced a complete product the difficulties would be overwhelming. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on would involve obvious disadvantages-imagine a coal-miner attempting to save enough coal, which of course is his product, to keep him for life. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity.41.Using money as a medium of exchange means that______.A.you have to sell something in order to buy somethingB.you have to buy something in order to sell somethingC.you don’t have to buy something in order to sell somethingD.the seller and the purchaser are the same person正确答案:C42.Specialization is encouraged because people______.A.can use their money to buy whatever they wantB.do not need to make a complete product for exchangeC.can share their products with many othersD.cannot use their money to buy whatever they want正确答案:B43.A barter economy is one in which______.A.value is decided by weightB.value is decided by numberC.money is used goods are not exchangedD.goods are exchanged and money is not used正确答案:D44.If one had to save products instead of money, ______.A.this would need years of practiceB.he could only save part of his productsC.they could not be stored for years on endD.many products would lose their value正确答案:D45.How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage?A.TwoB.ThreeC.FourD.Five正确答案:BTalk to those people who first saw films when they were silent, and they will tell you the experience was magic. The silent film had extraordinary powers todraw members of an audience into the story, and an equally potent capacity of make their imaginations work. It required the audience to become engaged—to supply voices and sound effects. The audience was the final, creative contributor to the process of making a film. The finest films of the silent era depended on two elements that we can seldom provide today a large and receptive audience and a well-orchestrated score. For the audience, the fusion of picture and live music added up to more than the sum of the respective parts. The one word that sums up the attitude of the silent filmmakers is enthusiasm, conveyed most strongly before formulas took shape and when there was more room for experimentation. This enthusiastic uncertainty often resulted in such accidental discoveries as new camera or editing techniques. Some films experimented with players; the 1915 film Regeneration, for example, by using real gangsters and streetwalkers, provided startling local color. Other films, particularly those of Thomas Ince, provided tragic endings as often as films by other companies supplied happy ones. Unfortunately, the vast majority of silent films survive today in inferior prints that no longer reflect the care that the original technicians put into them. The modern versions of silent films may appear jerky and flickery, but the vast picture palaces did not attract four to six thousand people a night by giving them eyestrain. A silent film depends on its visuals; as soon as you degrade those, you lose elements that go far beyond the image on the surface. The acting in silent was often very subtle and very restrained, despite legends to the contrary.46.In paragraph 2, the sentence”For the audience. . . parts, “indicates that______.A.music was the most important element of silent filmsB.silent films rely on a combination of music and image in affecting an audience C.the importance of music in silent film has been overestimatedD.live music compensated for the poor quality of silent film images正确答案:B47.The “formulas “mentioned in paragraph 3 of the passage most probably refers to ______.A.movie theatersB.use of real charactersC.contemporary eventsD.standardized film techniques正确答案:D48.The author uses the phrase “enthusiastic uncertainty”in paragraph 3 to suggest that the filmmakers were ______.A.eager to challenge existing conventionsB.eager to please but unsure of what the public wantedC.excited to be experimenting in an undefined areaD.delighted at the opportunity to study new acting formulas正确答案:C49.The last sentence of paragraph 1 implies that______.A.the audience plays an important role in the process of making a filmB.silent film techniques should be studied by filmmakers todayC.visual effects defined the silent filmD.many silent films that exist today are of poor quality正确答案:A50.The word”restrained”(the last line of the passage) most nearly means ______.A.sincereB.dramaticC.inexpressiveD.understated正确答案:DPeople have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviors are formed. It is not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive. Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have been developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from one another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often referred to as “ nature/nurture”. Two who support the” nature” side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined to such a degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts. Proponents of the “ nurture”theory, or as they are often called, behaviorists, claimed that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviorist, B. F. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimulus as the basis of their behavior. Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to ourbehavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controversy will continue for a long time is certain.51.Which of the following statements would supporters of the” nature” theory agree with?A.A person’s instincts have little effect on his actions.B.Environment is important in determining a person’s behavior and personality.C.Biological reasons have a strong influence on how we act.D.The behaviorists’ view correctly explains how we act.正确答案:C52.Which of the following statements would proponents of the “nurture “theory agree with?A.Environment has little to do with behavior.B.Behaviorist theory is not correct.C.Biologically based instincts are important in how we act.D.A person’s character is greatly influenced by his environment.正确答案:D53.B.F. 广东省专插本英语考试(2)2006年广东省专插本英语考试Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity.41. Using money as a medium of exchange means that______.43. A barter economy is one in which______.44. If one had to save products instead of money, ______.45. How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage?Talk to those people who first saw films when they were silent, and they will tell you the experience was magic. The silent film had extraordinary powers to draw members of an audience into the story, and an equally potent capacity of make their imaginations work. It required the audience to become engaged-to supply voices and sound effects. The audience was the final, creative contributor to the process of making a film. The finest films of the silent era depended on two elements that we can seldom provide today-a large and receptive audience and a well-orchestrated score. For the audience, the fusion of picture and live music added up to more than the sum of the respective parts. The one word that sums up the attitude of the silent filmmakers is enthusiasm, conveyed most strongly before formulas took shape and when there was more room for experimentaion. This enthusiastic uncertainty often resulted in such accidental discoveries as new camera or editing techniques. Some films experimented with players; the 1915 film Regeneration, for example, by using real gangsters and streetwalkers, provided startling local color. Other films, particularly those of Thomas Ince, provided tragic endings as often as films by other companies supplied happy ones.Unfortunately, the vast majority of silent films survive today in inferior prints that no longer reflect the care that the originaltechnicians put into them. The modern versions of silent films may appear jerky and flickery, but the vast picture palaces did not attract four to six thousand people a night by giving them eyestrain. A silent film depends on its visuals; as soon as you degrade those, you lose elements that go far beyond the image on the surface. The acting in silents was often very subtle and very restrained, despite legends to the contrary.46. In paragraph 2, the sentenc e “For the audience…parts.”indicates that______.47. The“formulas”mentioned in paragraph 3 of the passage most probably refers to ______.48. The author uses the phrase “enthusiastic uncertainty”in paragraph 3 to suggest that the filmmakers were ______.49. The last sentence of paragraph 1 implies that ______.50. The word“restrained”(the last line of the passage)most nearly means ______.Passage fourPeople have wondered for a long time how theirpersonalities and behaviors are formed. It is not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from one another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often referred to as“nature/nurture”.Two who support the“nature”side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory . Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined to such a degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts.Proponents of the “nurture”theory, or as they are often called, behaviorists, claimed that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviorist, B. F. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists’ view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli as the basis of their behavior.Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controversywill continue for a long time is certain.51. Which of the following statements would supporters of the “nature”theory agree with?52. Which of the following statements would proponents of the “nurture”theory agree with?53. B. F. Skinner________.54. Concerning the nature/nurture controversy, the writer of this article________.55. In the U. S. , black people often score below white people on intelligence tests. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesmanpromptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else-he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; he does so with skill and polish:“I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir , but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned.”Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is:“This is the right color and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only“having a look round”. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36.According to the passage, when a man is buying clothes, ______.A.he buys cheap things, regardless of qualityB.he chooses things that others recommendC.he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right thingsD.he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear37.What do men care about the fit of new clothes?A.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average size.B.Most men just assume that the size is right for them.C.They make sure a thing fits before they buy it.D.They do not worry whether a thing fits well or not.38.What does a man do when he cannot get exactly what he wants?A.He buys a similar thing of the color he wants.B.He usually does not buy anything.C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.39.What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.D.They listen to advice but seldom take it.40.What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?A.Men do not try clothes on in a shop.B.Women bargain for their clothes, but mendo not.C.Women care more about the quality thanD.The time they take over buying clothes.men.Passage TwoAs a medium of exchange, money permits the separation of exchange into the two distinct acts of buying and selling, without requiring the seller to purchase goods from the person who buys his products, or vice versa. Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value-that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal, which would be a difficult and time-consuming task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties’ desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter fish bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to barter fish for bananas, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to exchange bananas is or not keen on fish.Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivity.41. Using money as a medium of exchange means that______.A. you have to sell something in order to buy somethingB. you have to buy something in order to sell somethingC. you don’t have to buy something in order to sell somethingD. the seller and the purchaser are the same person42. Specialization is encouraged because people______.A. can use their money to buy whatever they wantB. do not need to make a complete product for exchangeC. can share their products with many othersD. cannot use their money to buy whatever they want43. A barter economy is one in which______.A. value is decided by weightB. value is decided by numberC. money is used goods are not exchangedD. goods are exchanged and money is notused44. If one had to save products instead of money, ______.A. this would need years of practiceB. he could only save part of hisproductsD. many products would lose their valueC. they could not be stored for years onend45. How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage?A. TwoB. ThreeC. FourD.
