一、选题的意义及国内外研究状况综述、本人是否有创新
选题的意义:
随着社会的进步和人类文明的发展,委婉语伴随着整个社会的言语交际过程。委婉语不仅是每个社会中都普遍存在的语言现象,也是一种社会文化现象。它被定义为:“用一种不明说的、能使人愉快的或含糊的说法代替具有令人不悦的含义或不够尊敬的表达方法。”(《语言与语言学词典》,斯托克和哈特曼等编)委婉语是社会语言学和语用学研究的课题之一,同时也是跨文化交际中一个重要话题,它使用更礼貌文雅的方式,代替了唐突、直接的表达,顾及听话者的利益,给与其礼貌与尊重,最终达到良好的交际任务。它又是人们在社会交往中为寻求理想的交际效果而创造的一种恰当的语言形式,是用来维系人与人之间交际活动顺利进行的有效润滑剂,是保全交际中双方面子的重要手段。由于中西文化的差异,两种语言的委婉语在使用上有明显的差别。因此,就中英两种语言的学习者和使用者而言,了解和掌握中英委婉语在社会交际中运用的异同可以借以避免尴尬的意图,交流信息,实现以言行事;减少语用失误、文化冲突带来的摩擦,维护说话双方利益并保全面子,从而提高语言学习者和使用者的语用能力及跨文化交际能力,促进各方关系融洽,达到理想交际效果。

中英文指称的对比分析

中文摘要衔接是篇章中的句子在语义和表层结构中的连接方式,是构筑篇章的重要手段之一。

本文以韩礼德的功能主义语言学理论为基础,辅以大量英汉对比例句,分析了作为衔接方式之一的指称在英汉两种语言系统中的异同。

指称衔接关系又可进一步分为人称指称关系、指示指称关系和对比指称关系。

通过对比分析,我们发现英语和汉语的人称指称系统在指称功能上并无多大差异,其区别主要体现在英汉人称代词在表达和形态上的差异,而导致这种差别的主要原因正是英语重形和而汉语重意和。

相对而言,汉语语篇中的指示指称较之英语复杂,本文重点比较了两种语言在表示近指和远指概念时选词的区别,体现了英语重客观逻辑而汉语多受主观因素影响的特点。

总的来说,英汉两种语言的比较指称系统并无多大差异,主要都是通过形容词和副词来表达比较意义的。

人称指称的对比分析对于翻译实践,尤其是对增词等具体翻译技巧的应用有很好的借鉴和指导作用。

在外语教学实践中,衔接理论是传统教学的有效补充,指示指称的某些词项的功能可以解释语法规则望尘莫及的一些语言现象。

外语教学者可以从中受启发,博采众长,把语言学领域的新研究成果和理论用于指导教学。

Non-verbal communication mainly expresses real emotion and attitude through facial expression, gesture, eye behavior, clothes, sound, etc. For instance, waving hand is to show farewell; offering our hand with a slight smile to others means welcome. When listening to a report, people lean against the chair, which suggests that they are not interested in the report. (3)2. In China, a slouching posture is a sign of poor manner on many occasions, for Chinese value proper stance and sitting position. However, Americans often fall into chairs or slouch when they stand, because being casual and friendly is valued in America. There are also cultural differences as far as gait is concerned. Chinese people may reproach Americans for being arrogant because of their long strides. On theother hand, Chinese people’s gait may be thought as shy and timid. The differences are caused bythe simple reason that Americans need more space than Chinese do. Besides, there is another underlying reason: Chinese culture stresses modesty, so it is improper to swagger. Standing with arms akimbo is common in America with neutral meaning. Such a posture may be adopted both by men and women. Women adopt this posture to show their impatience. However, such a posture is regarded as a threat in China. (14)Sitting posture is a constant source of cultural misunderstandings. For example: Americans feel very relaxed at home and in their private offices. They may sometimes sit on the carpeted floor or the ground. This is taken as a dirty habit in China. When Chinese have to sit on the floor or the ground, they invariably spread a handkerchief or a newspaper. Americans in turn would interpret this to be a dirty habit because to them, handkerchiefs should not be used to mop the floor, nor should newspapers be littered here and there. When American teachers sit on the desk in class to create a light atmosphere, Chinese students are often shocked by that. Besides, an American in his private office may lean far back in his chair or even put his legs up on desk when talking on the phone or to other people. To them, it is a sign of being relaxed. A male leader may put his legs up on the desk to show his amicability and friendliness. Nevertheless, such a posture is extremely offensive to Chinese. The way a dentist, doctor, or barber touches someone will differ from the way he/she touches or is touched by his/her friends and families.Generally speaking, we can regard America as non-contact culture. Americans try their best to avoid touching strangers in public. When Americans stand in line, they always try to keep a distance from others. If someone is too close with him, the first reaction is falling back. If not, he will incline aside and contract his muscle. If the invader hasn’t reacted to the signal, he will use the bag which he takes with him or other things to protect him. In contrast, China is a country of togetherness, and China belongs to contact culture. In China, the sense of private space is comparatively weak. Crowdedness is quite ordinary because of the large population. People may feel uncomfortable with the physical contact in crowd, but in most of times, they wouldforgive and endure this kind of behavior rather than get angry. So, when Americans touch or pat Chinese people on the shoulder in conversation, Chinese often avoid.Apart from such intimate contact, there is ritualized touch. The most obvious of a ritualized touch in America is handshake. This mutual gesture is widely practiced and serves as a substitute for a number of verbal messages: “hello”, “goodbye”, “it’s a deal” and “congratulations”. Handshake is common in China, too. People, especially men, tend to shake hands during initial meetings. There exist differences of handshake. To American people, Chinese shake hands are too long and less firmly. Any smile that seems less than apologies will make Americans angry. Sometimes, a smile with Americans tends to signal an intention to keep the atmosphere cordial, but for Chinese culture, it can mean an area of tension. After all, Chinese culture often uses the smile to display embarrassment or a feeling of discomfort with the conversation. American teachers in China often comment that on that first day of the class, students appear so happy. In fact, many are nervous and yet their smiles give the new inexperienced teacher some encouragement.Facial expressions carry meanings determined by context. Pain is conveyed by a grimace, which also signifies disgust or disapproval. Surprise, shock, or disbelief can be shown by raising eyebrows. When the Chinese want to express “shame on you”, they use forefinger of one hand extended, and sliding over one’s own face several times quickly, which is similar to scratching. But Americans use forefinger of each hand extended, palms down in front of one’s body, and one forefinger makes several brushing movements over the back of the other forefinger to give this meaning; When Chinese express “I’m very full” after a meal, they use the gesture with one or both hands open, lightly patting one’s own stomach. In U.S. people raise their hands tothroat with finger extended, palm down and with the remark “I’m full up to here.”When Americans express “come here” (beckoning someone to come), they use hand extended toward person open palm, palm up, with all fingers crooked in a beckoning motion. 意译
• 意译就是按意思来译,在英语 中也称为“free translation”。 严复说: “译事三难: 信达雅”。 如果说直译追求的是“信”或 者忠实、形似,那么意译就追 求的是“ 达” 或者通顺、 意似。 • “粽子”——a pyramidshaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves” • “粽子”的译文体现了其外形特 征及构成。当“ 粽子”有一天 和“饺子”一样成为世界食品 时,“ 粽子”的最佳翻译还应 该是音译“zong zi”,而不是现 在的意译或释译。
道家学说
• “无为”意为无为而治,是 《道德经》的总纲。这两 个字反映了老子的辩证法 思想,同时反映了他的治 国之道。有人译为 “effortless action”,有人 译为“non-action against action”,还有人译为“do nothing”或“wuwei”。笔 者认为这几种译法如果没 有注解或解释,“无为” 是很难被西方人理解的。

• 中国的哲学思想也是翻译的难 点之一。“仁”是儒家学说的 核心。一个“仁”字却使译者 大伤脑筋。是“love”? 是 “goodness”? 还是“humanity” 或“human-heartedness”? 其 实,“仁”字远远超过了这些英语 词的含义。“仁”字包含了孔 子思想的精髓。孔子曾多次解 释该词的意思——“爱人”, “克己复礼为仁”。由此可见 “仁”的含义是如何深奥。现 在许多译文将“仁”译作 “benevolence”,并且还有解 释,这样就清楚了。

中医
• 在中医理论的英译中, 我们会碰到 诸如“虚”、“实”、“寒”、 “ 热” 等词语。这些词语在中医 理论中被赋予了深奥的意义, 难以 在英语中找到对应、达意的词语。 一种译法: • 虚——underactivity 实—— overactivity • 寒——cold 热——heat • 这种译法多少只表达了其表面内 容, 没有完全表达出中医理论的实 质。 • “虚” 和“实” 是指体质的强弱 与疾病的严重程度。“虚”即 “虚症”,是正气虚,也就是患 者抵抗力弱。“实” 即“实症”, 是邪气实,也就是病理反应强。 • 抵抗力强的人常常患实症,即 “寒症” 和“热症”,在中医里 不只是感觉上的寒和热,而是一 种错综复杂的情况。
中医
• Practitioners(医师) of traditional medicine track down symptoms by looking , smelling , asking detailed questions and taking the pulse. • “望诊”其实是观察病人的精神、 气色及形态,而“look”却不能表达 出这个意思。这里的“望”应译为 “observing the patient carefully”。 • “闻诊”包括两层意思: 闻声音和 嗅气味,而“smell”只表达了其中 的一层意思。这里的“闻” 应译 为“listening to the patient's voice and pay attention to any odor of the patient”。
道家学说
• 道家学说中的“道”字常被译为 “the way”,“得道”译为 “achieve the way”。笔者认为 “the way”只是“道”的一个方面, 而不是全部。“道”是万物之本, “道”是万物之源。在《道德经》 第一章中,老子这样写道:“道 可道, 非常道”,就是说道家说的 “道”已超越了常人认为的道。 是一种看不见,摸不着,却又存 在的无物之物。它是不以人的意 志为转移,无处不在,无时不在, 永远运行的无状之物。如此复杂 的含义,一个“way”字恐怕是表 达不了的,必须加以解释或注解 才能使西方人了解其含义。
• 中西方在历史背景(history)、社会习俗(social customs)、 宗教文化(religious practices)、意识形态(ideology)等方面 的差异, 为中国传统文化英译提出了许多值得商榷的问题。 文化空缺现象就是其中的一个方面。 我们常常碰到这样 的情况: 反映中国传统文化特色的词语在英语中几乎无对 应或相近的表达方式——文化空缺造成了词语空缺。 • “Cultural vacancy” : Some words and expressions conveying the features of Chinese traditional culture have no equivalents in English.
二胡
• 有人把民间乐器“二 胡”译为“second fiddle”,这个译法显然 不合适。“二胡”之 所以称之为二胡,是 因为该乐器有两根弦, 并非有第二根弦之意。 所以,“二胡”可译 为“two-stringed fiddle”或“Er Hu”。
音译
• 英译汉时可以将许多反映西方文化的词语用音译 的方法译入汉语,比如:“可口可乐”、“沙 发”、“华尔兹”、“麦当劳”、“巧克力”、 “咖啡”等。这些词随着西方文化的传入,在我 国已经被接受,成了汉语中的外来词汇。 • 那么,在英译中国传统文化的实践中,音译也可 被广泛采用。目前,音译这种方法主要用来翻译 一些哲学思想、中医理论、部分年号如“永乐”、 “景泰”、“雍正”等及古代文人名称如“秀 才”、“举人”、“进士”等等。对这些在英语 里找不到对应表达方式的词语,采用音译加解释 (或文化注解) 的方法,十分可取。
中医
• 虚—— symptoms showing deficiency of vital energy and resistance of diseases • 实—— symptoms of high fever or disorders as stasis(停滞) of blood, constipation(便秘), etc. (suffered by patients who are physically strong as a result of combating of resistance against evils in the body) • 寒—— symptoms caused by cold factors such as chill(寒气), slow pulse , etc. • 热—— symptoms caused by febrile(发热的) factors
直译
• 这种翻译方法有很大的局限性。一是因为逐字逐 句翻译是十分机械和死板的, 加之英汉在语言单位 划分、句法结构形式等方面的明显差异,使译者 很难找到恰当的搭配及完全相等的字眼。二是直 译虽然简洁明快,不拖泥带水,但往往会使读者 对词语的理解只停留在表面,不能完全深入其文 化内涵。如果在直译的基础上, 对有些词语适当加 注,效果则更好。 • 比如给“eight-part essay” 加上“a literary composition prescribed for the imperial civil service examinations, known for its rigidity of form and poverty of ideas”

Abstract
气功
• “气功”中有两个概念词— —“气”和“阴阳”不好译。 有人把“气”译为“air”。 笔者不敢苟同。“气”的 概念来源于中国传统医学 理论,可分为好几种:元 气,脏腑之气,卫气和营 气。对中国人来说“气功” 里的“气”是一种运行于 经络之间的东西,是一种 动力。“air” 的意思与其 相比, 相差甚远。所以, 翻译“气”时,多为音译。
