2022届湖北省武汉市武昌区高三上学期元月调研考试英语试题
2022届湖北省武汉市武昌区高三上学期元月调研考试英语试题1. Three Types of Renewable Energy SourcesWater PowerWater power is the world’s biggest source of renewable energy by far, with China, Brazil, Canada, the U. S. , and Russia the leading water power producers. While water power is a clean energy source provided by rain and snow, it also has several drawbacks.Large dams can damage river ecosystems and surrounding communities, harming wildlife and displacing residents. Even water power at full capacity bears its own emissions problems, as rotting organic material in reservoirs releases methane (甲烷,沼气).Dams ar en’t the only way to use water for power. Tidal and wave energy projects around the world aim to capture the ocean’s natural rhythms. The potential marine energy is great.Wind PowerWind turbines (涡轮) are growing around the globe, and China, the U. S., and Germany are the leading wind energy producers. Some people may object to how wind turbines look on the horizon (地平线) and to how they sound, but wind energy, whose prices are declining, is proving too valuable a resource to deny. Another problem with wi nd turbines is that they’re a danger for birds and bats, killing hundreds of thousands annually that engineers are working on solutions to make them safer for flying wildlife.Solar PowerFrom home rooftops to farms, solar power is reshaping energy markets around the world. In addition to solar panels, which change the sun’s light to electricity, concentrating solar power (CSP) plants use mirrors to concentrate the sun’s heat, getting thermal energy. Solar thermal energy is also being used worldwide for hot water, heating, and cooling. China, Japan, and the U. S. are leading the solar transformation, but solar still has a long way to go.1. Which country is the leading producer of all the three renewable energies?A.China. B.Japan. C.Germany. D.Russia.2. What may reduce the disadvantages of water power?A.Gathering organic material in reservoirs.B.Employing alternative water sources.C.Moving residents away from damsD.Using water power at full capacity.3. What is a problem with the wind turbines?A.They cost too much.B.They occupy much space.C.They cause noise pollution.D.They affect flying wildlife’s health.2. Throughout history, many of the world’s greatest artists never achieved tremendous fame until after their death. That’s the case of Vivian Maier, who’s now considered to be one of the most important American street photographers of the last century, alongside famous names like Diane Arbus and Henri Cartier-Bresson. But she remained unknown for much of her life, and it was only a chance encounter with a box of negatives that put her in the spotlight.Details of her life are unclear, but she was born in New York City in the 1920s to European parents. Maier grew up in France before returning to the U. S., where she spent several decades working as a nanny in Chicago to wealthy families. During her days off Maier is thought to have taken more than 100, 000 photographs of people and city scenes in Chicago, yet she kept the photos to herself-many of them never developed.Skip ahead to 2007, a Chicago historian and collector, John Maloof, came across Maier’s work by accident after purchasing a box of tens of thousands of undeveloped negatives for $380 Sat an auction (拍卖) . As he developed them, Maloof realized they were more than just photos. He was looking at evocative (唤起) art illustrating a Chicago of the mid-20-century that nobody had never seen. Maloof worked to uncover who the photographer was, acquiring more and more of her work. But before he could locate her, Maier had already passed away in 2009, having slipped on ice and never recovering from her head injury. While Maloof researched Maier’s work, more details emerged. She kept to herself, her employers said, and she would spend her free days taking photos on the streets of Chicago with a Rolleiflex camera. According to Maloof, the children Maier took care of knew she was constantly taking photos, yet she never showed her photos to anyone. Maier also traveled around the world, as indicated by some of her photos.Other collectors began to acquire Maier’s photos, but Maloof owns much of her work. He released a book, Vivian Maier: Street Photographer, in 2011, and his documentary, Finding Vivian Maier, came out in 2013.1. Which word can be used to describe Vivian’s life?A.Risky. B.Wealthy. C.Mysterious. D.Miserable.2. What do we know about Vivian Maier?A.She was born in France.B.She never developed her photos.C.She enjoyed great fame in her life.D.She took photos of Chicago and other cities.3. What did Maloof do after he found Maier’s photos?A.He approached Maier’s former employers.B.He managed to meet the artist in the flesh.C.He released a collection of Maier’s work.D.He purchased more developed negatives.4. What can be inferred about Vivian Maier’s photos?A.They were presented to her employers.B.They were meant to earn her a fortune.C.They were taken by a professional artist.D.They were of artistic and historical value.3. I was not worried about the American education system until after I started writing a column, because that’s when I found out there are English teachers who assign my column as reading material. I regularly get e-mails from students asking about my use of writing techniques and other things I’ve never heard of. To which I respond, “Transfer (转学) high schools immediately! To one that teaches Shakespeare and Homer instead of the thoughtful commentary of a first-rate modern wisdom! Also, don’t do drugs! ”I can expect to be sending more of these e-mails because of the Common Core State Standards (共同核心国家标准), which public schools are encouraged to follow. The new curriculum standards dramatically shift about half t he nation’s high school English reading lists toward an emphasis on nonfiction. In a speech last year, David Coleman, the new president of the College Board, who was one of the chief creators of the Common Core, said, “It is rare in a working environment t hat someone says, ‘Johnson, I need a market analysis by Friday, but before that I need a vivid account of your childhood.’” I agree with this, but no one has ever asked me for a market analysis.Coleman’s idea is that by reading clear, tightly structured nonfiction, kids will learn how to write clear, tightly structured nonfiction. And indeed, the first time I write in a new format-travel essay, screenplay, apology e-mail-I read a bunch of examples. But when I want my writing to improve, I read something that forces me to think about words differently: a novel, a poem, a George W. Bush speech. Fiction teaches you how to tell a story, which is how we express and remember nearly everything. Anyway, school isn’t merely training for work; it’s training for comm unication throughout our lives.1. How did the author feel after his column was used as students’ assignment?A.Proud. B.Satisfied. C.Concerned. D.Disappointed. 2. What should high schools do according to David Coleman?A.Stress nonfiction.B.Read more fiction.C.Teach market analysis.D.Encourage writing.3. Why does the writer turn to a George W. Bush speech?A.To create words. B.To better his writing.C.To tell a story. D.To follow the format.4. What is the passage mainly about?A.The shift of teaching techniques.B.The trend of reading Shakespeare.C.The effects of the new curriculum standards.D.The problem with American education system.4. Despite living beyond 80s, “super-agers” have the physical ability and cognitive (认知的) function of people much younger, which has long been puzzling scientists. But researchers may have discovered why super-agers are able to stay so mentally sharp: the neurons (神经元) in their entorhinal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for storing memories, are much larger than those of their average peers. Furthermore, these neurons show no sign of tau tangles (蛋白病), which limit the communication between neurons and are alarming signs of Alzheimer’s disease. “To understand how and why people may be resistant to developing Alzheimer’s disease, it’s important to closely investigate the brains of super-agers,” said lead researcher Tamar Gefen, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences at Northwestern University. To make the discovery, the researchers examined the brains of six super-agers, seven cognitively average elderly individuals, six young individuals and five individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.“The remarkable observation that super-agers showed larger neurons than their younger peers may imply that large cells were present from birth and are maintained structurally throughout their lives. We conclude that larger neurons are a biological signature of the super-ageing.”The researchers concentrated their studies on the e ntorhinal cortex as it’s one of the first locations to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The neurons that form this part were found to be bigger in super-agers than in all of the other groups in the study, even those who were 20 to 30years younger. They were also found to be free from tau tangles.“In this study, we show that in Alzheimer’s disease, neuronal shrinking in the entorhinal cortex appears to be a characteristic marker of the disease,” Ge fen said.“We suspect this process is a function of t au tangle formation in the affected cells leading to poor memory abilities in older age. Identifying this contributing factor-and every contributing factor-is crucial to the early identification of Alzheimer’s, monitoring its course and guiding treatment.”The researchers are now planning further studies to try and figure out why super-agers have such larger neurons.1. What do researchers find about “super-agers”?A.They have weak cognitive ability.B.They are likely to suffer Alzheimer’s neurons.C.Tau tangles can be commonly found in their brains.D.Some of their brain neurons are larger than their peers’.2. How did Tamar Gefen carry out his research?A.By observing the function of neuron formation.B.By limiting the communication between neurons.C.By examining the brains of multiple groups of people.D.By tracking the large cells in super-agers’ brains from birth.3. What does the underlined word “shrinking” mean in Paragraph 5?A.Adapting. B.Becoming smaller.C.Expanding. D.Growing flexible.4. Which of the following is not yet identified by the researchers?A.Why super-agers are free from tau tangles.B.What are typical signs of Alzheimer’s disease.C.Which part of the brain is in charge of memory storage.D.Whether large neurons are connected with super-ageing.5. Praise is like sunlight to the human spirit: we cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, while most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism, we are somehow reluctant to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise.1 Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept compliments gracefully. Instead, we are embarrassed and shrug off the words we are really so glad to hear. Because of this defensive reaction, direct compliments are surprisingly difficult to give. That is why some of the most valued pats on the back are those which come to us indirectly, in a letter or passed on by a friend. It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed or unmentioned. 2 A cook is praised for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? Do you ever praise your paperboy for getting the paper to you on time 365 days a year?Praise is particularly appreciated by those doing routine jobs: gas station attendants, waitresses-even housewives. 3 Since so often praise is the only wage a housewife receives, surely she of all people should get her measure.4 It only takes a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort perhaps a quick phone call to pass on a compliment, or five minutes spent writing an appreciative letter. It is such a small investment and yet consider the results it may produce. 5So, let’s be alert to the small excellences around us and comm ent on them. We will not only bring joy into other people’s lives, but also, very often, add happiness into our own.6.
