2022-2023学年广东省韶关市广东北江实验学校高一下学期期中英语试题1. Theater is a big part of what makes New York shine. This city is full of talent that even the youngest can appreciate, and at the best Broadway shows, everyone in your crew will be interested. The Lion King (Ages 8 and up.)There’s a reason Simba’s story continues to draw in crowds year after year: It’s an amazing production with amazing sets and a moving score. Seeing The Lion King live is something like a ceremony for New York kids. Unconvinced? Ask the 100 million+ audience members worldwide who’ve seen the performance.Six (Ages 10 and up.)On a concert stage, backed by an all-female band, the six wives of Tudor Dynasty Henry Ⅷ air their complaints in the form of modern pop. The queens sing their heads off, and the audience loses its mind. Some of the stories are pretty dark, but the girl-power dance moves will make older kids excited.Wicked (Ages 8 and up.)Based on novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 adult variation on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked shows what happened before the events in the children’s book. The musical addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty and morality. While children five and up are permitted in the theater, little ones might be afraid of the flying monkeys.Come from Away (Ages 10 and up.)One of the more unlikely musicals on Broadway is an excellent choice for the family: Come from Away is the tense but humane story of an airport in Gander, Newfoundland, where 38 planes and more than 6,000 passengers were forced to land on September 11, 2001. It raises big topics, but in such a way that invites thoughtful discussion.1. Which musical combines royal history with modern art form?A.The Lion King . B.Wicked . C.Six . D.Come fromAway .2. What can you learn about Come from Away?A.It features female dancers and singers. B.It leaves much room for deep thinking.C.It includes standards of beauty and morality. D.It stresses harmony between human and nature.3. Who is the text intended for?A.Musical talents. B.Foreign visitors.C.Parents and their children. D.Teachers and their students.2. Coming of age is that time in each of our lives when we begin to see the possibilities. The world opens up in ways that mature our vision and give us a sense of responsibility and gratefulness. Connor had just started college and loved being at that stage in his life where he could eat all the pizza he wanted, get engaged in adult conversations with his parents about the responsibility to make life better for others. Connor’s optimism was infectious. There was so much he could do, and so much he could become. But it all ended one night when Connor was distracted while driving on a Colorado high- way. A young man,who gave off so much light, suddenly went dark.Connor’s father, David, took it particularly hard. A father sees more than his own traits (性格) in his son; he sees greater possibilities than he achieved. Taking that hope away left David feeling at a loss. But Connor’s optimism was one of those traits passed on to him by his father. So, David got to work.First, he established the Honor Connor Scholarship Fund to reward students who served in the community. Next, he went to work creating a research-based curriculum that educates University of Colorado Boulder students and their families about the dangers of texting while driving. It includes a very simple three part promise: Do not text or use social media while driving, speak out if riding with a driver who is distracted and encourage friends and family to drive phone-freeDavid now works with lecturers at various colleges and high schools, ensuring young minds understand how statistically at risk they are when they text while driving. He’s become a passionate advocate for preparing young people to drive safely and not reach for their phones while they’re at the wheel. “I just don’t want other parents to go through what I did when I lost Connor,” says David. “It’s just so preventable.”1. What’s the p urpose of paragraph 1?A.To give the background of a funny story.B.To explain why David chose to volunteer.C.To set off David’s great pain of losing his son.D.To sing high praise for Connor’s healthy growth.2. What happened to Connor on a Colorado highway?A.The headlight of his car went wrong.B.He drove carelessly and died in an accident.C.He suffered an accident for his father’s fault.D.He died from another driver’s careless driving.3. From whom did Connor get the positive attitude towards life?A.His coach. B.His grandfather.C.His teacher. D.His father.4. Why did David work with lecturers under a research-based curriculum?A.He wanted to take a job in a college.B.He took the classes that Connor hadn’t finished.C.He wanted to prevent the sad event that he had suffered.D.He honored Connor for what he had done in the community.3. This was a major week in AI (Artificial Intelligence), with some of the largest companies announced their most updated and leading models: GPT-4 fr om OpenAI’s made its first show to the public, while Google put out its Med-PaLM 2, a new-and-improved medical model etc. Meanwhile, Company Anthropic introduced its lighter and cheaper Claude API, which is a ChatGPT competitor. And in China, Tsinghua launched ChatGLM, a chat-based Chinese-English model, in somewhat as a reminder of ChatGPT. In this AI spring, much awaits for customers.Designs are on the rise. As foundation models change rapidly, the demand for AI policy grows as well, which catches the attention of top policymakers across the world, attempting to ensure AI security. In the U.S., Congressman Ted Lieu presented a report calling for AI regulation that was written by ChatGPT, accompanied by a column (专栏) in the New York Times.“AI is no longer a matter of science fiction, nor is it a technology confined or restricted to research labs. AI will dramatically change our lives. Jobs like journalists, lawyers and doctors are facing challenges. AI is a technol ogy that is already being highly concerned.”1. Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them.Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality (性格) more than anything else, CBC News reported.“We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study. But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster. In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.1. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph?A.Dislike. B.Fear.C.Put up with. D.Adapt to.2. What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study?A.What we eat actually helps to develop our personality.B.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females.C.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food.D.People are wrong to treat " spicy" as a kind of taste rather than a feeling.3. Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?A.Because their taste has become less sensitive.B.Because they love the burning feeling.C.Because they want to challenge themselves.D.Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns.4. What’s the main idea of the passage?A.What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality.B.Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality.C.One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste.D.Different people have different taste.5. Quality of life refers to an individual's general well-being. It can be determined by a variety of factors, especially the mental ones. 1 The following tips could give you what you need.Spend time with your thoughts. Spending time with your thoughts is a good way to know what makes you happy. It is worthwhile to always think about what you really need, and then act as you like. Know what upsets you and try to get away from it if possible. 2Get some help for constant problems. Sometimes things affecting your quality of life are simply your worry. 3 For instance, you may have issues with insomnia(失眠症) as you are aging. It can be difficult to get rid of it all by yourself. In this case, speaking to a professional doctor could relax yourself and help get your life back on track,4 If you feel down for having been leading a plain or even boring life and not accomplishing something meaningful, now it might be the time to start working on something bold(大胆的) to cheer you up. You can start by taking on a project that you’ve previously been afraid of.Learn something new. The more you develop your talents in many different areas, the more you have to be proud of. Have you ever doubted yourself? 5 This is because learning something new can help you add more skills to your list and prepare you for more chances ahead.6. She then ra n a marathon every day for 150 days— a 3,900-mile journey that ended in Melbourne on Monday, January 16,2023.By running the entire north-south distance of Australia, Murray-Bartlett beat the record held by British runner Kate Jayden, who ran a marathon for 106 continuous days last year. In addition to the new Guinness World Record, Murray-Bartlett was running to raise money for a conservation charity, the Wilderness Society. She raised $70,000 during her journey across Australia.“Yesterday was everything,” she said. “When I stood on the start line on August 20 I could never have imagined what the next 22 weeks would bring... I can’t put into words how good crossing that finish line felt, and to be honest, I think I’ll be processing for a few weeks, months, and even years to come.”Murray-Bartlett has been running professionally for many years. When she missed out on qualifying. for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she decided on a new goal: running the length of Australia and setting a new female record for continuous marathons. To state the obvious: it wasn’t always easy. Murray-Bartlett experienced three injuries during the first 3 weeks of the journey. But she didn’t give up, and her body adapted as she ran along her country’s coasts, rainforests, dirt roads and highways. She ran through heavy rain and intense heat. The journey also served to raise awareness of Australia’s extinction(灭绝) crisis. Many of the island nation’s plants and animals are found nowhere else — yet 500 of them are threatened with extinction. Throughout the trip, Murray-Bartlett highlighted her country’s biodiversity on social media. When she finally crossed the finish line on Monday evening, she learned she’d raised nearly double her fundraising(募捐) goal.4.What’s one goal of Murray-Bartlett’s running?A.To enter the next Olympics.B.To go on running professionally.C.To collect money for protecting wildlife.D.To help bring back lost plants andanimals.5.How did she feel when crossing the finish line?A.Pleased.B.Faint.C.Confident.D.Horrible. 6.What do we know about the journey from paragraph 6?A.Murray-Bartlett finished the journey uninjured.B.The good weather continued during her journey.C.There were many challenges during the journey.D.The journey raised awareness of extinction crisis.7.Which words can best describe Murray-Bartlett?A.Energetic and frank.B.Tough and determined.C.Positive and adventurous.D.Considerate and generous. The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t seem to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has showed. The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life. They found that participants who had taken their exam 50 years ago and not used French ever since performed as well as as recent school leavers and those who occasionally used French.Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory. V ocabulary is memorized in the same way that facts, dates and names are, while this memory may become weaker over time, and grammar is learned in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much more stable. V ocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”“Many people are not willing to revisit languages they once learnt as they fear they willbe forced to relive some of the more ‘boring’ elements of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to go back to their original level,” Schmid added.8.What did the researchers ask the participants to do?A.Take a French exam.B.Conduct a survey in French.C.Learn French from recent school leavers.D.Talk about their French GCSE experience.9.What can help us recall a foreign word?A.A fact related to it.B.Our muscle memory.C.A similar-sounding word.D.The grammar of the language. 10.What can we infer from Schmid’s words in the last paragraph?A.One is able to quickly and easily to learn a new language.B.Years of use promises fluency in a foreign language.C.The boring elements of a language course are important.D.It is easier than one thinks to pick a foreign language back up.11.What is the best title for the text?A.Language Tests Taken at School MatterB.If You Don’t Use a Language, You Lose ItC.Knowledge of Foreign Languages Lasts a LifetimeD.When You Grasp the Grammar, You Learn the LanguageHousing officials say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack the will, and the skill, to deal with ordinary conflicts. “We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our conflicts are because kids don’t know how to solve a problem by formal discussion.”And as any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent discontent (不满) that can boil over into frustration and anger. At the University of Florida, emotional conflicts occur about once a week, the university’s director of housing education says, “Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is mostdramatic among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.Administrators guess that reliance on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable encounters. Why express anger in person when you can vent (发泄) in a text? “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,” says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It’s a different way to express their conflict to each other, consequently creating even more conflicts as complaints go public.” In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor.Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Some parents continue to interfere (干涉) on campus.12.What is the main reason for many roommate conflicts?A.Students are not good at reaching an agreement about the problems.B.Students are not satisfied with each other.C.Housing directors are not responsible for them.D.Students are not strong-willed.13.What do we learn from the second paragraph?A.Students, especially freshmen, should bottle up their dissatisfaction.B.Students in Florida sit down and have a person-to-person talk once a week.C.Not all students are able to handle conflicts by the time they graduate.D.The number of conflicts among roommates has decreased in the past five years. 14.What is the attitude of Dana Pysz when he mentions roommates reveal their conflicts in the media?A.Disapproving.B.Indifferent.C.Supportive.D.Unclear. 15.What should parents do according to the passage?A.They should be involved in their children’s life on campus.B.They should deal with their children’s problems in their whole lives.C.They should constantly contact the administrators of the college.D.They should teach their children the skills to tackle the conflicts.Reviews (评论) play an important role in our online society; they allow you to get an idea of what you are getting yourself into before actually putting any time into such a venture (冒险). Despite this, some people still choose not to take advantage of this useful tool. 16 Let’s look at why you should read reviews before buying something online.17 Many factors (因素) determine what quality a product has, and trying to look for them all on your own when trying to shop is going to take you days of research. Many user review websites can give you a good idea of what the usual experience is when buying a product.18 Not only will you have to create an account (账户) but you will also need to spend money to try out the game for a while to get a full view of what it has to offer. You can just look up reviews by experienced players and know right away whether it’s a great game. It’s really that simple. With the number of companies that are out there, finding one that meets your tastes for what you are looking for can be a near-impossible task. 19 Reviews allow you to jump straight to the key points you need to know before wasting any time on a product that isn’t to your tastes. So next time you consider buying something online, look up a few simple reviews.20 But you will not regret it.A.It might take a few minutes.B.This may sound like a big deal.C.It can lead you to having a bad shopping experience.D.Reviews allow you to see if a product is worth your time.E.This is especially the case if you happen to be someone with special tastes.F.This can be for many reasons such as believing that others can’t exactly describe whatever product you are looking to buy.G.For example, you are considering trying out an online game.二、完形填空A Life-Giving TouchOn March 25, 2010, Kate and David heard the words every parent 21 : Theirnewborn wasn’t going to make it. Some of us used to get in trouble for talking in the hallway (过道). Miss Paula says she can’t change the rule that we can’t make noise in the hallway but we can still talk to each other. She is teaching us sign language. I already know how to say “hello” and “how are you” with my hands. Now we love it when we have to walk somewhere and we are always quiet except for a laugh or two.Miss Paula likes everybody even Sam and nobody likes Sam. He never does what he’s told but now he is doing better. Miss Paula says every single one of us is perfect and beautiful just the way we are. We can learn from the passage that the writer ________.A.loves and respects her new teacher B.is a bit afraid of her new teacherC.always picks her teacher some flowers D.wrote this article in the morning“I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,” said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me? ”Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character — even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular — experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all, we’ve all heard “No man is an island.” That’s true. We all need others in our lives.Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection (拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures (措施).Be willing to take the initiative (主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her. And don’t let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You’ll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance.Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog?” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possi ble friend not end your communication with a one word answer.8. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry?A.To set a sad tone. B.To share Lisa’s pain.C.To introduce the topic. D.To teach readers a lesson.9. What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage?A.Being refused by others. B.Putting ourselves in danger.C.Being treated in a rude way. D.Losing interest in communicating.10. What can we know from Paragraph 5?A.Shy people are hard to talk to. B.Popular people are often easy going.C.Just waiting for chances will waste our time. D.A proper manner is important in making friends.11. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes”or “no”questions?A.It is considered unfriendly. B.It will leave a bad first impression.C.It shows the poor quality of the speaker. D.It isn’t good for keeping a conversationgoing. One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the ‘last paradise (天堂) on earth’. However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of sea-side holidays, over-crowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife, and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation (开采) of precious trees and plants. Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multi-national organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people. The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning world-wide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists n ow may well have been destroyed.12. What does the author indicate in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?A.The Pacific island is a paradise. B.The Pacific island is worth visiting.C.The advertisement is not convincing. D.The advertisement is not impressive. 13. The example of Nepal is used to suggest__________.A.its natural resources are untouched B.its forests are exploited for farmlandC.it develops well in health and education D.it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists 14. What can we learn about the farmers from Paragraph 4?A.They are happy to work their own lands.B.They have to please the tourists for a living.C.They have to struggle for their independence.D.They are proud of working in multi-national organizations.15. The author’s attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is___________.A.optimistic B.doubtful C.objective D.negative Participating in high school extra-curricular activities is important for personal growth. They can teach you a lot, introduce you to good friends and give you ideas about what to do in future. 16 . The most important thing to consider before taking part in extra-curricular activity is: what do you like to do? 17 Once you’ve made a list of interests, it’s time to search for opportunities. Usually, your teachers and parents know more about what is going on in your community than you do. 18 And never underestimate the power of a simple online search! Now you know how to find extra-curricular activities, there is one more problem most high school students have: how to find the time. You need to go to school, do your homework, and maybe even work a part time job. 19 However, time is not something too difficult to get. You have to make the time to do extra-curricular activities if you really want to get involved. You can sit down and make your schedule hour by hour and take an honest look at what you do with your free time. 20 Whether you give up one Saturday every month to volunteer or one hour every week to. attend club meetings, you are making the time to make a difference and prepare for your future.Standing on the top of Mount Tai, I watched the sun rising through the cloud and taking its place in the sky. The next day, we drove to the research center where he worked. In the conference room, each of us gave a presentation about science and what we hoped to learn from the study of Cuban rivers. Then, we toured every lab in the building. I met scientists, technicians, secretaries, students, and the cook. Some spoke English, and others communicated with me in Spanish while my cooperator translated. I was introduced to each person in their center, and that was what I remembered most. Then we met again to brainstorm. Together, we studied maps carefully to plan how we were going to collect samples. Had it not been for the Cubans, I would have been unaware that the maps I had were outdated and wrong. They left out reservoirs, which was a problem because had we sampled downstream of them, our results would have been misled. On the last night of the trip, we searched for a restaurant that could seat all 14 of us at one table because that’s what teams do--sitting together. When a restaurant couldn’t seat the team without splitting us up, my partners insisted that we move on and find another restaurant with a large enough table. In 26 years as a professor, I’ve always tried my best to treat my students as valued partners. I have never been a fan of the grade system in the academic world. I urge everyone working with me to feel as though they are part of a team. But my Cuban partners taketeamwork to another level entirely. They make it clear--through actions, both big and small--that all team members are valued, that everyone is equal, and that true team work contributes to better science.I returned to the United States as a changed scientist. Now, I spend more time listening and making sure that everyone’s voice is heard.4.What impressed the author most when he visited the research center?A.He was led to see everyone.B.There were no many people there.C.Everybody gave a great presentation.D.The cooperator spoke perfect English. 5.Why did the author’s partners refuse to eat at the first restaurant?A.They wanted a smaller one.B.They wanted to save money.C.They didn’t want a crowded one.D.They didn’t want to be separated. 6.Which of the following does the author stress in the team?A.Honesty.B.Perseverance.C.Cooperation spirit.D.Scientific theory.7.What can we infer about the author from the text?A.He used to treat his students unfairly.B.He used to be misled by other scientists.C.He focuses on the opinions of the masses now.D.He speaks highly of the grade system in science now.Using needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. The past hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, from life-saving medicine and X-rays to mRNA vaccines and special cancer treatments. Yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged. Although now available in a variety of different sizes, it remains a hollow (having a hole or empty space inside), pointy tube. With luck, that may soon change. As Yichi Ma, a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues outline in a review paper, researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the pain when needles go into the skin. Many have been inspired by nature. The team got their idea from mosquitoes, which manage to get their blood meals without causing great pain to people. One reason is that the insects use painkilling chemicals when they first puncture(刺穿) the skin. But there is another reason. The point of a mosquito’ssaw-like proboscis(锯齿状的喙) is softer at its tip. The insect makes the skin of its target tight before biting, and shakes its proboscis as it pushes the proboscis in. All of this helps reduce the force needed to puncture the skin. One paper, published in 2020 by a group of researchers in America and China, found that a mosquito-inspired needle required 27% less puncturing force than an ordinary one. And less force means less pain. Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies (the examination of tissue taken from a living body). A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020, found that scientists could improve biopsies of tissue in some body organs. The lower force led to less movement of the organ itself, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the area that needed sampling. For now, such devices remain limited to labs. But there is a big market for better needles. According to WHO, around 16 billion injections were given in 2018. With one person in four saying they suffer from a fear of needles, the savings on stickers and sweets for the brave souls who roll up their sleeves would be considerable.8.What can we infer about needles from Paragraph 1?A.Their importance has been ignored for long.B.They fall behind other medical innovations.C.Their size remains the same for over a century.D.They had a poor source of supply for decades.9.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The source of scientists’ inspiration.B.The chemical compounds found in mosquitoes.C.The unique structure of a mosquito’s proboscis.D.The harmful effects of mosquito bites on humans.10.Why did the author mention the figures in the last paragraph?A.To show people’s anxiety about injections.B.To highlight the limitations of current needle designs.C.To draw attention to the dangers of too many injections.D.To emphasize the potential demand for improved needles.11.What is the best title for the text?A.The Limitations of Current Needle DesignsB.The Role of Needles in Traditional Chinese MedicineC.Enhancing Needle Technology: Lessons from MosquitoesD.The Impact of Needle Innovation on Medical AdvancementsThe artificial-intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has shaken educators since its November release. New York City public schools have banned it from their networks and school devices. There is, perhaps surprisingly, one subject area that doesn’t seem threatened. It turns out ChatGPT is quite bad at maths.“I’m not hearing maths instructors express concern about ChatGPT,” said Paul von Hippel, a professor at the University of Texas who studies data science and statistics. “I’m not sure it’s useful for maths at all, which feels strange because maths was the first-use case for the artificial-intelligence devices.”ChatGPT’s struggle with maths is inherent in this type of AI, known as a large language model. It scans a large amount of text from across the web and develops a model that might be extremely effective for writing grammatically correct responses to essay requirement, but not for solving a maths problem. In an email, I asked Debarghya Das, a search-engine engineer, why ChatGPT gets some simple questions right but others completely wrong. “Maybe the right analogy (类比) is if you ask a room of people, who have no idea what maths is but have read many hieroglyphics (象形文字), ‘What comes after 2+2,’ they might say, ‘Usually, we see a 4,’ That’s what ChatGPT is doing.” But, he adds, “Maths isn’t just a series of hieroglyphics. It’s the process of calculating.”It isn’t great for pretending you know it through a maths class because you only recognize the mistakes if you know the maths. Another reason that maths instructors are less anxious about this innovation is that they have been here before. The field was upended for the first time decades ago with the general availability of computers and calculators.“Maths has had the biggest revolution based on machinery of any mainstream subject,” said Conrad Wolfram, the strategic director of Wolfram Research. “In the real world, since computers came along, have maths, science and engineering gotten conceptually simpler? No, completely the opposite. We’re asking harder and harder questions, going up a level.”Eventually, Al will probably get to the point where its maths answers are not only confident but correct. A pure large language model might not be up for the job, but the technology will improve. In general, however, AI, like computers, will likely ultimately bemost useful for those who already know a field well. They know the questions to ask, how to identify the shortcomings and what to do with the answer. A tool, in other words, is for those who know the most maths, not the least.12.What does the underlined word “inherent” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?A.Stable.B.Practical.C.Limited.D.Natural. 13.What can we know from Debarghya’s reply?A.Calculating requires some knowledge of hieroglyphics.B.ChatGPT is good at solving mathematical questions by analogy.C.Reading hieroglyphics prevents ChatGPT solving maths questions.D.ChatGPT’s response is based on language models instead of calculations. 14.What is maths instructors’ attitude towards ChatGPT?A.Anxious.B.Unworried.C.Indifferent.D.Satisfied. 15.As for AI, which would the author probably agree with?A.It will play the largest role for professionals in a field.B.It will become confident to solve all the maths problems.C.It will turn the maths field over again just like computers.D.It will take the jobs from humans as the technology improves. With all of the technology we have at our fingertips, network crime would be at an all-time high. Identity thieves will do whatever they can to get their hands on your personal information, including your bank account, mail or email, credit card and anything they want to know. Many victims of identity theft don’t know they are victims. 16 You start getting bills for unfamiliar expensesDon’t ignore any unusual bills that appear in your mailbox. It might not be simply junk mail. Bills for overdue (逾期) payments could mean trouble with identity fraud (欺诈). In this case, you should call the police right away. 17 But it puts you on record as having reported the identity theft and can help in repairing your credit. You stop receiving your mail or emails18 Not receiving mail or emails related to expenses is a red flag too. This is especially true for items that you receive on a regular basis, like bank statements and bills. An identity thief only needs your name and address to reroute your mail and intercept (拦截) sensitive documents, so make sure to follow up with creditors if your bills don’t arrive ontime. This is a reason to destroy documents that have your personal information on them.19You don’t have to lose your wallet for thieves to steal your credit card information. If you enter your credit card number while on public Wi-Fi, hackers can gain access to your information and copy your credit card to consume. 20 Then get new credit card numbers as soon as possible. These are the times you should never use a credit card.A.They probably will not catch the criminal.B.You start receiving mail for a different name.C.You notice unexplained charges on your credit card.D.Receiving strange bills is not the only dangerous sign.E.You receive statements for credit cards you don’t have.F.However, some signs can remind you that you’re one of them.G.Contact your bank to report the fraud and have the charges removed.二、完形填空After ten years in the same company, I found my job was no longer fun. +1围成的图形的面积为258.【解析】(1)把A,B的坐标代入解析式即可解答(2)设直线L的解析式为:y=kx+b,代入A,B的坐标即可(3)求出直线L与x轴交于(﹣74,0),直线y=2x+1与x轴交于(﹣12,0),即可根据三角形面积公式进行解答【详解】(1)把A(2,a)代入y=2x+1得a=2×2+1=5,故a=5,把B(b,1)代入y=x+2得,1=b+2,∴b=﹣1,(2)设直线L的解析式为:y=kx+b,把A(2,5),B(﹣1,1)代入得521k bk b=+⎧⎨=-+⎩,解得:4373kb⎧=⎪⎪⎨⎪=⎪⎩,∴直线l的函数表达式为y=43x+73;(3)∵直线L与x轴交于(﹣7 4,0),直线y=2x+1与x轴交于(﹣12,0),∴直线L、x轴、直线y=2x+1围成的图形的面积=12×(﹣12+74)×5=258.
