The Red Delicious apple is likely to lose its title as the most popular apple this year, which it held for more than half a century. The U.S. Apple Association is projecting, that the Gala apple will usurp(夺取)the Red Delicious for the top spot. The group, which advocates on behalf of 7,500 apple growers and 400 companies in the apple business, predicted that the U. S. would grow 52.4 million Gala apples in 2018, up 5.9 percent from a year earlier. Red Delicious apple production is expected to fall 10.7 percent to 51.7 million.Consumers apparently like the Gala's "taste, texture(口感)and sweetness," the U.S. Apple Association said in a statement. "The rise in production of newer varieties of apples aimed at the fresh consumption domestic market has caused demand for the Red Delicious to decline." said Mark Seetin, the association's director of regulatory and industry affairs. The Granny Smith, Fuji and Honeycrisp apples are expected to rank third, fourth and fifth. The association predicted that within a year or two the Honeycrisp may pass the Granny Smith and Fuji, jumping into third place. The production of the apple rose 21.8 percent to 23.5 million this year. That puts it ahead of the Golden Delicious apple for the first time. The Honeycrisp was created by the University of Minnesota's apple breeding(培育)program only 21 years ago. It typically costs more than its competitors.Until the 1970s, Americans had only a few choices of apples. While the Golden Delicious offered a color contrast and the Granny Smith brought tartness(酸味)to the table, the Red Delicious was the star, heavily promoted by Washington state growers. Then wholesalers began looking for tastier varieties, finding them overseas in Japan, home to the Fuji, and New Zealand, which had the Braeburn and Gala.(1)How does the author prove Americans' preference for the Gala?A.By using statistics.B.By listing examples.C.By explaining causes.D.By presenting research findings.(2)What do we know about the Honeycrisp?A.It is sour in flavor.B.It is light in color.C.It is gaining popularity.D.It is losing its price advantage.(3)Which of the following comes from New Zealand?A.The Fuji.B.The Honeycrisp.C.The Braeburn.D.The Granny Smith.(4)What does the text mainly tell us?A.Why Americans eat apples from different countries.B.How different apples are becoming popular in America.C.How American farmers choose their apple growing types.D.Why the Red Delicious was Americans' favorite for 50 years.causal inferences rather than simply finding patterns. AThe Top4Beaches on the East CoastNantucket,MassachusettsGreat point,at the easternmost end of the island of Nantucket,is one of the most secret beaches in the world. That’s because you need a four-wheel drive vehicle and a beach permit to get there.Once you do,you’ll find miles of beachfront and a historic lighthouse.Block Island,Rhode IslandAccessible by ferry,Block Island oozes New England charm. It’s worth the effort to get to Mohegan Bluffs, where you can experience a set of141wooden steps leading down to the sand. Now,thanks to the invention of a17-year-old girl,Arora,we finally have a better choice. This plastic-like material is made from prawn(大虾)shells, and it breaks down1.5million times faster than most of the commercial plastic products we use today. The Australian teen first became aware of the impact of plastic waste on the environment when shopping with her mother. She wondered why her mother had to pay for the plastic bags. When asked, the cashier informed her how plastic hurts the planet and that the additional charge was there to encourage people not to use it.This inspired Arora to create a kind of plastic that would break down faster than the conventional one.But the journey of inventing“eco-friendly plastic”was not easy. She experimented with a number of organic materials such as cornflour and banana peels, both of which had to be ruled out because of their solubility(溶解性).One night, while having dinner, she noticed that the shells of prawns look plasticky. She immediately went to the lab to ter,she would describe that dinner as her“Eureka”moment. She extracted the material called“chitin”from the shells and then mixed it with an insoluble protein called“fibroin”,which is found in silk ing the combination of these twoorganic materials,Arora created a plastic-like material that breaks down completely within just33 days. Moreover, this plastic releases nitrogen when breaking down, which is why it can be used as plant fertilizer.Arora’s invention has caused a stir, and she has won a number of awards. As an inspiring young woman,Arora wants to make a difference in the world, and she wants to encourage other young people to follow their passion and make a positive difference however they can.8.What inspired Arora to create a kind of special plastic?A.A cashier’s words about paid plastic bags.B.Her determination to protect the prawns.C.A class about plastic’s impact on the planet.D.Her plan to save money on plastic products.9.What could be a“Eureka”moment?A.A moment of needing reflection.B.A moment of finding the truth.C.A moment of having sudden inspiration.D.A moment of enjoying the celebration.10.What can be known about the new plastic in paragraph4?A.It is made from non-organic materials.B.It can break down totally in a month.C.It can be used to help plants to grow.D.It is extracted from an insoluble protein.11.Which of the following can best describe Arora?A.Brave and clever.B.Creative and inspiring.C.Active and considerate.D.Humorous and friendly.DI once asked people what it meant to be a good listener. The typical response was a blank stare.Of course, technology plays a role.People find phone calls interrupting them, preferring text or wordless emoji.Besides, schools and colleges rarely offer classes or activities that teach careful listening. The loud unpleasant mixture of sounds of modem life also stops us from listening.Generally, listening goes beyond simply hearing what people say.It also involves pa)dngattention to how they say it and what they do while they are saying it,in what context, and how what they say is related to you.Ifs not about merely holding your peace while someone else holds forth.Quite the opposite.Good listeners ask good questions. They engage in exploring the topic, not to divert attention. There are curious questions like“Wouldn’t you agree...?”or“Don’t you think...?"These questions have strong tendencies. They will greatly influence the other person to change his or her view. And you,d better stay away from some personal questions like“What do you do for a living?”or “What part of town do you live in?"Just try to find out what excites people.Ask about the last movie they saw or for the story behind a piece of jewelry they're wearing. Also good are expansive questions, such as,“If you could spend a month, where would you go?”The reward of good listening will certainly be more interesting conversations.Researchers have found that attentive listeners receive more information from speakers, even when they don't ask any questions. We are, each of us,the sum of what we attend to in life. The gentle voice of a mother and the criticism of a boss both ultimately form and shape us.And to listen poorly, selectively or not at all limits your understanding of the world and prevents you from becoming the best you can be.12.What's the main idea of paragraph2?A.The great influence of technology.B.The factors causing fewer good listeners.C.The lack of classes to teach listening.D.The two opposite sides of modem life.13.Which question may a good listener ask?A.Isn’t it wise to choose a foreign university?B.Are you satisfied with your present salary?C.How can you afford such a costly house?D.What do you think of Eminem’s new song?14.What does the author probably agree with as for listening?A.Asking adequate questions is necessary.B.Keeping silent is of greater benefit to both sides.C.Listening attentively will be rewarded a great deal.D.Listening selectively will bring limitless possibilities.15.What can be the best title of the passage?A.The Art of Asking QuestionsB.Take Action Against TechnologyC.Bad Listening Leads to FailureD.Try to Be a Good Listener第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项.Basic first aid is a very valuable skill to have when going on a camping trip.____16____Cuts.With small cuts, you need to be careful to keep the area of the wound clean to avoid getting infected.____17____If the cut has not stopped bleeding, raise the wounded area above the heart and place pressure on the area to stop the bleeding.____18____It should be held in place with tape, but should not be too tight.Blisters.Blisters can turn a fun walk in the woods into a terrible experience.____19____ Change your bandage and socks and keep the blistered area clean.Make sure that you pack different size bandages and first aid cream.Sprains.If you have got a heavy pack on your shoulders,it can be very easy to twist your ankles.Walking sticks can be a traveller's friend.____20____A good ACE bandage should be packed in case of a sprained ankle. This can help fix the sprained area until you can get medical attention. After seeing the above dangers and treatments,it's also helpful to pack a small basic first aid kit for your trip.Make sure that you include items that are unique to you and fit your environment (bleeding, bruise, snake bite,etc.).A.Some climates can be very hot during the day and very cool at night.B.Treat the cut with first aid cream to prevent infection.C.They are an open wound and can get infected if not cared for.D.Below is a brief list of less-severe injuries that you can prepare for.E.They can help you keep balance on rough areas.F.Apply some cream and cover the wound with a dry, clean bandage.G.Wear comfortable shoes and socks during the trips.第二部分语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Numerologists use the numbers 1-9, 11 and 22 — also known as the “master” numbers —to help a person understand his or her personality, life goals, and destiny.Numerologists consider your Life Path number to be the most significant because this number describes your character. To find this number, add together all the numbers in your date of birth. For example, a person born on April 25, 1985 would add the month (4), to the numbers of the date (2+5), plus the numbers of the birth year (1+9+8+5). In this case the total is 34, so this person’s life path number is 7(3+4). Numerologists believe that people with this number are peaceful and affectionate but can also be very reserved.Your Expression number describes your talents and predicts how you should use these tofulfill your destiny in life. Numerologists assign a number between 1 and 9 to each of the letters in your name. These numbers are then added together in the same way as before to find your Expression number. Numerologists can also do calculations to predict when the most challenging periods of your life will be.Numerologists also believe that the day a person is born is important. Each day of the month has a character description. People born on the fourth are said to be responsible, honest, and stubborn. People born on the fifteenth have very strong attachments to family and home. Those who celebrate their birthday on the thirtieth are artistic, creative, and imaginative, and often make good writers. If we calculate the numerical value of our name and birth date, numerologists believe that we can learn more about our personalities. They also believe that we can predict our destinies, how our lives will progress, and what challenges we may face along the way. To the numerologist, numbers can be used in many more ways than we think.26. If a person was born on November 8, 1995, what is his Life Path number?A. 7B. 8C. 9D. 1127. To understand your abilities and how to use them in your life, you should calculate your ______.A. Life Path numberB. Expression numberC. birthdayD. name and birth date28. According to the passage, a person born on the fifteenth tends to be _______.A. stubbornB. home-lovingC. artisticD. imaginative29. According to the passage, numerologists believe that _________.A. Life Path number can be used to predict a person’s most challenging life periodsB. Expression number is the most meaningful for people to learn a person’s characterC. numbers can help people better understand themselvesD. numbers can be used to change a person’s future30. The function of the passage is __________.A. to raise doubts about the usefulness of numerologyB. to persuade readers about the benefits of the practices it describesC. to describe some of the numerological practices and their purposeD. to tease those who take such beliefs seriouslyBMost young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and totake risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, as is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.31. What sports are popular among people in winter in the passage?A. Soccer and golf.B. Skiing and skating.C. Cycling and hockey.D. Mountaineering.32. The und erlined word “passion” in Paragraph 2 could best be replaced by ______.A. strong emotionB. good wayC. better feelingD. enough affection33. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because_______.A. it has man-made rulesB. it is too dangerous for climbersC. it can’t bring people joy or leisureD. it is free for climbers to use their own methods34. We know from the passage that _______.A. mountaineering has no appeal for peopleB. physical quality is more important than the mental one for climbersC. a mountain climber passes his best by the age of thirtyD. it is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps35. What is the best title for the passage?A. Sports in winterB. Team work in climbingC. MountaineeringD. The quality for mountaineeringCStudying volcanoes is a demanding profession. Hazel Rymer frequently has to struggle through rainforests, climb to the top of mountains, then climb 200 metres into the crater ofactive volcanoes. But the 38-year-old volcanologist does her best to make it sound less alarming than it is. “Driving to work is more risky,” she insists. “And the deepest I go into the crater of a volcano is about 300 metres,” she adds, trying to make it all sound as ordinar y as taking the dog for a walk.Hazel has been studying volcanoes for a long time, so it’s not surprising she is used to the danger. Her interest in volcanoes began at school. A teacher gave her a book about Pompeii. “I remember reading about the eruption of V esuvius and the destruction of the city,” she explains. “The thought of all those people just frozen in time had quite an effect on me and I am still excited by their dangerous beauty today.”Nowadays, volcanoes are getting more and more unpredictable. There have been many changes in sea level caused by global warming and melting ice caps. These have resulted in some dormant volcanoes erupting, so studying them is more dangerous than ever before. Hazel says that although she doesn’t take any unnecessa ry risk she has had some frightening moments. Her worst experience was on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, when she was slowly surrounded by lava. “I had a choice of walking ten hours to get around the lava flow or just walking across it,” she explains. She chose to pick a path across the cooler rocks in the lava stream. “I guess it was five metres. The flow was 1,000°C, so if you hesitated your boots would begin to melt. It was scary, but it really was a practical decision --- there wasn't time to do an ything else.”And what about the future? “I haven’t been to the volcanoes in Indonesia yet. And I would love to spend some time working in the Antarctic,” she says. “I would also like to know why quiet lava flows erupt from some volcanoes and why other vo lcanoes go bang.” In other words, Hazel Rymer won’t be exchanging her volcanoes for the relative safety of driving to work just yet.36. Hazel’s claim that “driving to work is more risky” than exploring volcanoes shows that ______.A. people have exaggerated the dangers of volcanoes in the pastB. Hazel does not really understand the dangerous situations she puts herself in.C. there are many bad drivers in the place where Hazel livesD. Hazel is being modest and understating the dangers she faces37. When did Hazel first become interested in volcanoes?A. When she was visiting Italy.B. When she was at school.C. When she was twenty.D. When she saw V esuvius.38. The underlined word “these” (in paragraph 3) refers to __________.A. melting ice-capsB. volcanic eruptionsC. changes in sea levelD. higher temperatures39. When Hazel was on Mount Etna she had to ________.A. take a dangerous routeB. take an unnecessary riskC. leave her boots behindD. walk for ten hours around the mountain40. In the future, Hazel wants to ________.A. revisit volcanoes she knowsB. go on holiday to the AntarcticC. find a less dangerous jobD. discover new things about volcanoesDAcross the planet there are millions of people who engage in some type of meditation, the practice of concentrating and clearing the mind to bring the body into a state of peace, at least a semi-regular basis. For some, particularly among practitioners of Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, this is part and parcel of their religious practice. For others, particularly in Western cultures, meditation tends to be a response to stress. With the world economy approaching meltdown and people worried about their job or their ability to keep their hom e, it’s a way for people to attain a state of peace of mind and well-being.For those interested in taking up the practice, instruction in meditation for beginners can be found in literally thousands of sources. One of the most popular styles of mediation in the West, with classes offered in most major cities, is called Transcendental Meditation. TM, as it is known among its practitioners, first came to worldwide attention when the Beatles began practicing it in 1967. For direct, guided, personal instruction in meditation for the beginner, TM may be the hallmark.Part of the confusion about how to practice meditation effectively is due to the fact that there are literally hundreds of techniques championed by various groups and individuals. As a general principle, it might be said that all meditation techniques seek to have the practitioner attain a state of consciousness that is different to our ordinary state of awareness. They attempt to train people to clear their minds and achieve a sense of inner peac e. It sounds simple enough, but of the huge number of people experiment with meditation, very few are able to maintain its practice over the long haul. In most cases, this is due to frustration over the inability to experience any dramatic, instantly recognizable effects. This is quite a sad state of affairs, that so few these days are willing or equipped to persist in something that doesn’t provide immediate life-changing results. It reflects a culture in which demands for discipline and sustained effort are considered unnecessary or even unfair. It is no surprise therefore that many people abandon their efforts at meditation before they have a chance to bear fruit. But for anyone who does decide to take up this worthwhile practice, please remember. Y ou m ust clear your mind, relax and “take it as it comes”. Maintain the practice with a sense of discipline and devotion, and eventually benefits of inner peace and calm will be yours. 41. The underlined part “part and parcel of” in paragraph 1 is nearest in m eaning to________.A. closely associated withB. very different toC. usually sent fromD. an important element of42. The goal of meditation is ________.A. to clear the mindB. to practice a religionC. to develop a techniqueD. to carry out an experiment43. What can we infer about meditation from the passage?A. It has two main types.B. It is practiced by many famous artists.C. Its benefits are not immediately obvious.D. Most people find it a very good way to relax.44. According to the writer, what has attracted many Western people to meditation practices in recent years?A. Their improved understanding of foreign culture.B. The need to fill in their growing free time.C. Increasing employment instability.D. Migration from countries in which meditation is traditional.45. Who is the probable audience for this article?A. Experienced meditation practitioners.B. People interested in starting to learn meditation.C. Buddhists and Hindus.D. People who are very religious.第二节信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)首先请阅读下列电子产品的信息:A.
