2019学年第二学期期末考试高二年级英语试题第I卷(选择题共70分)第一部分:阅读理解(共二节,满分40分)第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AChinese New Year is approaching and preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.LondonAlthough it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is a perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns , previous years have seen shows with acrobatics (杂技), martial arts (武术), dance and opera nearby.San FranciscoSan Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.BangkokWith an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.MauritiusFound in Port Louis, this Maur itian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century bysettlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional Lion dances through the streets.1. According to the text, which of the following has the longest history?A. London’s Chinatown.B. Bangkok’s Chinatown.C. Mauritius’s Chinatown.D. San Francisco’s Chinatown.2. What’s special about Bangkok’s Chinatown?A. It is crowded with Chinese restaurants.B. It is well-known for its gold business.C. It was the major entrance for the Chinese.D. Rue Royale in Port Louis, Mauritius.B. the Sunday market in Bangkok.C. the Grant Avenue in San Francisco.D. the Chinese community in London.BI once had an unforgettable experience that has influenced and directed the way I think and act now. When I was about seven years old, my grandfather took me to a fish pond ona farm and told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone. “You may create lots of circles in your life, but the waves that come from those circles will disturb the peace of all your fellow people,” he said thoughtfully. “Remember that your circle may touch many other circles, meaning that your thoughts or actions may disturb others’ lives. You are responsible for what you put in your circle. You will need to live in a way that allows the good or peace that comes from your circle tobe sent to others. At the same time, the anger or jealousy(嫉妒) coming from your circle also spread to other circles. You are responsibl e for both.”That was the first time I had realized that each person’s inner peace or discord(不和谐) can flow out into the world. If we are filled with inner conflict, doubt or anger, we cannot create world peace. We spread the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not. Whatever circles are inside us, they are spreading into the world, creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.4. The author’s grandfather took him/her to the fish pond to_______.A. go fishing togetherB. teach him/her a meaningful truth of lifeC. play a fun game with the authorD. correct his/her wrong doings5.What does the author want to say by telling us his unforgettable experience?A. It’s difficult to keep a good relationship with other p eople.6. The author would probably agree that we should________.A. send our anger to other peopleB. share our happiness with other peopleC. complain about the misfortune in our livesD. hide our feelings and never express them to others7.What is the purpose of writing this passage?A. To teach the young people how to hold their feelings and thoughts.B. To indicate the importance of an unforgettable experience.C. To recall the experience of fishing.D. To tell people to create beauty and harmony.CMusic is something that every person has his or her own specific opinion about. Different people have different tastes, and various types of music have many ways of leaving an impact on someone. It can be relaxing, angering, comforting, energizing, and many more. There are so many types of music out there today. Rap, pop, rock, country, alternative, hardcore are some of the abundant types in the world. Music sends out either good or bad messages that have big impacts on how people act. People usually become friends with others who have the same taste. The lyrics (歌词) sung or rapped by the artists can be things going on in their own personal lives. Music can also serve as a motivation for new ideas. When people listen to the new things out there, they learn different things going on in the world and they become more open-minded because they’re exposed to different people like the artists.People can use music to express themselves in ways it can’t be expressed through behavior, or art. You can usually tell how someone feels by the type of music he or she is listening to at the time. It’s a tool used by many. Groups of people around the world can come together and gather at concerts and shows to show what their interests and likings are and you see how many people have similar likings as you. 8.What can we know about music according to the first paragraph?A. The music you listen to shows how you feel.B. Music expresses oneself better than behavior.C. The music one listens to determines his or her feelings.D. Music is tool to make different people become friends.Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed.Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.12. What can we learn about crossing one's legs?A. It is a very bad social habit.B. It can do harm to people's health.C. It is usually practiced deliberately.D. It can make others feel uncomfortable.13. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______.A. affect your blood pressure.B. resist gravity effectively.C. lead to heart attacks easily.D. improve the function of legs.14. In the t hird paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______.A. being highly flexible.B. being a little tired.C. serious muscle injuries.D. slight sharp pains.15. What is the main purpose of the text?A. To compare common habitsB. To evaluate effects of an experiment.C. To give readers some advice.D. To introduce research methods.第二节(共5小题每小题2分满分10分)根据短文内容从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways-education, medicine and business. Quietly, the graying(老龄化)of America has made us a very different society—one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage of health. There’s no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say,“I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age.”No one says “Act your age”any more. We’ve stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.41. It can be learned from the text that aging of the population in America .A. has made people feel younger.B. has changed people’s social positionC. has changed people’s understanding of ageD. has slowed down the country’s social development42. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself(懒散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don’t know what to do with him these days,”she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She confessed(坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across theB. lifeB. changeable B. stillB. soB. getting to touch B. keepB. incidentsB. mistakesB. costB. becauseB. It was 1994., but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday: “Kerrel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be careful when you are around him.”AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look ater him.We couldn’t afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no money for school supplies and ofter couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the tea cher’s words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.I did not share my burden(负担) with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be crues. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his cindition a secret. I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless, I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. You needn’t stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn’t listen to something completely wrong and not to say that it was quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always keep patience and a smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike…I did this work for a month, then I decided to give it up. Apart from the reasons above, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse.Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my clas smates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing for even though I was earning money it came at great cost.Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong negative influences on study. Most students don’t view the relationship between study an d work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial(财政的) reasons, students should be cautious (careful) about taking up a part-time job.57. From the text, we can tell that the writer is .A. an unemployed manB. a middle-school studentC. a college studentD. a door-to-door salesman58. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries. Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them.Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long. The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately. The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left. Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases. Now,the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. According to the report, 2021 was probably one of the 10 warmest years since 1850.The report shows temperatures in different areas of the world. The report says most of the world’s land areas had temperatures higher than normal for nine months in 2021, from January to September. Australia had a very strong heat wave. Record high temperatures were also reported in parts of North America and north Africa. The report says record-breaking rainfall and snow fell in many parts of North America. Many scientists are worried about carbon dioxide, which stays in the atmosphere for centuries. However, the report calls for reducing pollutants that do not last as long. It says methane, for example, disappears after about 12 years. Black carbon from open-fire cook stoves stays in the air for just days or weeks. These pollutants speed up warming.I’ve decided to do what I can to help prevent global warming. For example, I’ve decided to stop asking my father to drive me to school from tomorrow on. Instead, I’ll take the bus or ride a bike. I hope we can all do our best to help prevent global warming.创作人:历恰面日期:2020年1月1日创作人:历恰面日期:2020年1月1日。

stuff.“Aerobic respiration(有氧口乎吸)was thought to be commonly found in animals, but now we confirmed that this is not the case,“said Dorothee Huchon,a zoologist at Tel Aviv University in Israel,in a press release.Huchon and a team of international researchers examined and sequenced(排序)all of.salmincola’s genes in their study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They found that the parasite, which is closely related to jellyfish, lacks the DNA machinery necessary to“breathe'Mt doesn't'have mitochondria(线粒体),often called the"powerhouse"of the cell, because they use oxygen to make energy. It's like a little factory inside almost all cells, and DNA detectives can find mitochondrial genes during sequencing. The discovery came as something of an accident for the team, who were examining the genome(the complete set of genes)of the species. When they went searching for the mitochondrial genes, they came up empty-handed."Our discovery shows that evolution can go in strange directions,Huchon said."Aerobic respiration is a major source of energy, and yet we found an animal that gave up this important pathway.”Some single-celled life forms have evolved the ability to survive without oxygen and do not have mitochondria, either.Plenty of bacteria can exist without oxygen at all.Instead of oxygen, they get their energy from fernentation(发酵)or use other molecules like iron. But how H.salminicola produces energy is still unclear.Huchon suggests it could draw oxygen from the cells in salmon or it could have evolved similar methods to those of single-celled organisms which scientists have documented in the past.28.What can we learn about Henneguya salminicola?A.It is an animal consisting of a cell.B.It can still survive without oxygen.C.It takes on a normal appearance.D.It has a longer life span than salmon.29.What is the main function of mitochondria?A.To make cells breathe fast.B.To help to produce oxygen.C.To provide energy for cells.D.To help cells absorb oxygen.30.How did Huchon probably feel about the discovery?A.Interested.B.Satisfied.C.Astonished.D.Frightened.31.What could be the most suitable title for the text?A.The natural evolution of animal cellsB.Different kinds of life forms on earthC.A research on single-celled organismsD.A creature that doesn't breathe oxygenDIn these days of information overload,it's never been more important to keep track of and back up your data. The problem is that digital storage doesn't last forever.Hard disks fail, phones tumble out of our pockets, and tablets are beaten up by grandchildren. This is why it is important to think carefully about your back-up strategy.Online back-ups are easier, arguably. All of the big tech players have online storage you can treat like your ownhard disk.Google has Google Drive,Apple has iCloud, and Microsoft has OneDrive. All you have to do is download the app for service you want to use to your computer or phone. Most Cloud storage apps even have the option to automatically upload your camera roll,so when you take new photos they511be sent up to the Cloud as soon as you connect to wifi.Offline storage is slightly trickier.Looking after Cloud files is Google5s or Microsoft's problem. But offline, figuring out what equipment to buy is something you need to figure out for yourself. The most obvious option is to buy a portable USB hard drive.Just plug it into your computer and you can copy important files to it.This is definitely a better approach than doing absolutely nothing, but there5s still a problem:if your back-up drive fails, you still lose everything. This is why if you5re serious about backing up-and you should be-I recommend the slightly pricier option of getting a device known as a NAS,which stands for""Network Attached Storage“and is basically a mini computer that you can plug directly into your wifi router. Some companies have devices available that contain only one hard drive, but I recommend buying one with space for at least two. This is because on most NAS models, two hard disks can work together to keep your files safe.Instead of appearing as separate hard disks, they can be combined using a feature called"RAID”,standing for"Redundant Array of Independent Disks”and it basically tells your NAS to treat the two hard disks inside it as though they were one drive, with the contents mirrored on both drives automatically. It means that if one of the two drives goes kaput, you still have a perfectly functioning mirror copy with all your files safely stored on it.The only thing considered undesirable is that a decent NAS tends to start at around£300,and that excludes the price of the hard disks themselves. But before you scream in horror,remember-this is for your most important files, to keep them safe. So,as annoying as it might sound, this is important.Just as you wouldn't leave your home with a risky boiler or drive a car with faulty brakes.It5s time to do the boring but important thing and spend the money to get your data backed up-before it is too late.32.Why are online back-ups easier?A.Because all of the big tech companies offer online storage free of charge.B.Because you just need to download the Cloud storage app for service you want.C.Because it is the service providers that are to blame if your Cloud files get lost.D.Because the data of your digital device is uploaded to the Cloud automatically.33.What can we learn about NAS?A.It's a device that you can plug into your computer.B.RAID is used to separate two hard disks inside NAS.C.It tends to be very costly even without hard disks.D.Most of them contain only one hard drive within.34.What does the underlined word"kaput”in the fourth paragraph probably mean?A.Tom.B.Broken.C.Lost.D.Shut.35.What's the main idea of the passage?A.Strategies for backing up data.B.Solutions to information overload.C.Problems concerning digital storage.D.Reasons for keeping track of your data.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

AFrom a multi-day hike following the routes of a Japanese poet,to a classic climb in the Argentinian Lake District, there are thousands of incredible trails(小路)that allow us to get up close to nature.Appalachian Trail,UnitedExtending for2,200miles,the Appalachian Trail is listed as the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. It runs from Springier Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through some of the most remote country in the United States. That means it’s a hard task, either for those with endless vacation allowance,or walkers looking to do a small piece of a classic route. The Basho Wayfarer,JapanThis self-guided trip follows a route taken by the poet Matsuo Basho over300years ago.The six-day hike starts in Sendai and works its way through the northern Tohoku region, passing through the UNESCO World Heritage(遗产)Site of Hiraizumi and along the ancient Dewa Kaido path. With its beech and cherry forests,it finishes at the temple of Yamadera.Mount Toubkal,MoroccoThe path upwards rises from the village of Imlil, passing over a dry river bed before rising sharply through a temple and on towards a large mountain cottage. After overnight here, hikers set off up the snowfield to the peak, where the Atlas Mountains open out and the views are breathtaking.A local guide and muleteers for carrying luggage are a must. The Dingle Way,IrelandIt is a ring-like path that offers the best way to get under the skin of wild County Kerry in Ireland’s south west. Mount Brardon, the highest peak on the Dingle Peninsula.1.What do we know about the Basho Wayfarer?A.It offers no guide service.B.It was built by a poet.C.It ends in the northern Tohoku region.D.It is on the world heritage list.2.Where can hikers enjoy a good view of snow?A.Appalachian Trail.B.The Basho Wayfarer.C.Mount Toubkal.D.The Dingle Way.3.What is special about the Dingle Way?A.It follows a circle path.B.It is the longest in the world.C.It finishes at Mount Brandon.D.It reaches the highest peak in Ireland.BKe’Nyzjah Ferebee was standing the kitchen worktop, adding cupcake liners to a pan.She used an ice cream spoon to fill each with cake batter(面糊)to ensure they would look identical.A finished group sat on the counter with white buttercream turning on top.The cupcakes were for a2-year-old’s“Moana”-themed birthday party. The next day,she had orders for a two-tiered cake and two birthday cakes. While most teenagers are spending the summer hanging out with friends and working,Ke’Nyzjah is filling orders, updating her website and getting new branding photos. She owns and operates KayKe Bakery,ahome-based business, specializing in custom cakes and cupcakes. She offers14flavors.She requires at least two to four weeks’notice on orders, and she gets six to seven a week.In2020,she started baking out of boredom and a desire for cake. She asked her mom for a solution.Mom pointed her to a box of cake mix in the cupboard.Ke’Nyzjah’s first attempt failed. But she tried making more cakes the next day.She got better. She watched hours of YouTube videos to come up with a recipe and to teach herself baking techniques.“Once I got on Instagram and started seeing other people’s decorated cakes, that’s when I got inspired to be a cake artistinstead of just a baker,”she said. She took business classes such as digital marketing at her school. She also registered for a course to become a certified customer service specialist. It taught her how to talk to customers and get through a sale. She’s constantly trying to find more ways to promote her business and find new clients.“It’s a little difficult having to keep up with both my Instagram and my Facebook pages and managing school, personal life and a business. It can be a lot sometimes, but I manage.”Nakesia Fercbec,Ke’Nyzjah’s mother, felt her daughter’s father has been influential.Ke’Nyzjah artist.D.How to start a business.CI am thinking today about my new favorite thing. It’s an app that my husband told me a few years ago that helps me bypass all the obstacles(障碍)in my way:potholes, heavy traffic, and even speed cameras. To be honest, when my husband first told me about it,I didn’t pay much attention.I was only going to places I already knew how to get to.Plus,I learned to drive from my father—who never turned to a map.I think I mistakenly absorbed the message that real drivers didn’t need a map;you somehow just magically knew where to go.It was only later that I realized that just getting a driver’s license didn’t mean you knew how to get to places—that was lesson one.Lesson two came when my kids started playing on two different travel teams. The drivers in our household suddenly had the need to head in different directions on the same day.Suddenly my app became very meaningful to me.How did I ever manage to get to strange playing fieldshidden somewhere without it?But the crazy thing I have also noticed is how often I just don’t listen to it.Why might that be?Do I just prefer the old routes, even if they are actually worse?I see an analogy(类比)to the present moment. There is evidence that some old ideas and some long familiar ideas will send us into a boring unchanging lifestyle. But for some reason we like them better than an unfamiliar new route that might take us into areas we’ve never heard of,let alone visited. It can be hard to admit we don’t know everything. As a person who still drives an8-year-old stick shift and who has never stood in line for anything new,I certainly understand that. But I also try to remember the times I let go of my ego(自负),or my fear, and learned that life could be better. Not perfect—but better.I am glad I finally listened to my husband about that app.He was right.8.What did the author think of the app at the very beginning?A.It was magical.B.It was practically valueless.C.It was powerful.D.It was not as good as a map.9.What would probably make the author ignore the app’s instructions?A.Her desire to explore alone.B.Her doubt about the new device.C.Her preference for the new routes.D.Her refusal to experience changes.10.What can be inferred about the author from the last paragraph?A.She is willing to challenge herself.B.She cares little about others’comments.C.She recognizes her problems easily.D.She is too inflexible to make any change.11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Real Drivers Know Their Way B.It Pays to Take a New RouteC.New Apps Make Life Perfect D.It Matters to Listen to Inner Voice第二节:(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

But I quickly found myself facing the same roadblocks that had caused me to quit before: I was confused with college-level algebra and a heavy workload of reading and writing assignment. Moreover, I was unsure of my career direction. I was ready to drop out again. Then a smartly-dressed woman walked confidently to the front of my English composition class. “Look at you! Look at each and every one of you,” she said. “You’re here to change your lives for the better. And you’re going to make it!” I can’t remember the rest of the speech, but it changed the course of my college career and my life.Mrs. Smith didn’t know me from any of the other 40 faces in her classroom, but I felt she speaking directly to me. Having trouble keeping up with the workload? Break it down into small pieces, and set up a schedule that suits you. If college algebra is too difficult, drop back to introductory college math. As for English composit ion, she gave us writing assignments we could relate to. “Go for the best, kid. You’re worth it,” she’d say.I graduated from that college and went on to get my bachelor’s degrees. Today, as a college instructor, each fall when I stand in front of a new class, I think of Mrs. Smith and how much teachers can affect their students. She couldn’t have known it when she gave that pep talk, but she made a huge difference in my life.4. Why did the author want to quit school again?A. He wanted to return to hid former job.B. A lady changed my life in time.CIn the story of “The Crow and the Pitcher”(乌鸦和水罐)from Aesop’s Fables (伊索寓言), a thirsty crow drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink. Now scientists have evidence to back up that story. New Caledonian crows actually do understand how to make water displacement work to their advantage, experiments showed. The results suggests that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as first-graders, according to the study.Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a worm or pieces of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged a bunch of heavy rubber erasers that would sink, and light plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the heavy objects into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack. However, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow tube to get snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into the narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops. In contrast, it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didn’t realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom.8.What does the text focus on?A. Aesop’s prediction.B. Crows’ intelligence.C. The development of crows.D. Human-animal communication.9.How did the crows get the worm in a tube in Sarah’s experiment?A. By dropping in the heavy erasers.B. By removing the plastic objects.C. By standing on the wood.D. By breaking the tube.10.What does the underlined part “the treat” in paragraph 4 refer to?A.the tube.B.The object.C. the snack.D.The water11.What did the experiment with wide and narrow tubes show?A.Crows are sensitive to surroundings.B.Crows have the ability to recognize shapes.C.Crows are cleverer than chimps and children.D.Crows understand water displacement incompletely.D“No pains, no gains.” gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we’re putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true? When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious cycle(恶性循环) that traps us into ineffective revision, your poor progress fueling further annoyance.Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions. It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just idle(懒散的)company. People, who are bored and looking to be distracted, are terrible to work around. They constantly try to keep others in conversation. While studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than study. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score in games rather than productive revision. If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychologicalbarrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation(孤立). And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.12. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to ___________.A. introduce an effective studying meansB. encourage us to work as hard as possibleC. remind us to balance activities and studyD. discuss the importance of family company13. What can we learn from the second paragraph?A. Revision is interesting and easy with study techniques for certain.B. Shutting ourselves away can help concentrate on work.C. A favorable interest might lead to effective revision.D. Good ideas are needed in terms of progress.14. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 implies that ___________.A. playing video games is helpful for an effective studyB. one shouldn’t study with the company of a video playerC. one should study from certain activities that one is interested inD. the more time one spends in playing games, the higher test scores one will get15. If you are studying in a noisy environment, you’d better ___________.A. think twice before taking any actionB. give up others’ company at onceC. give indication of not wanting to be interruptedD. force yourself to be accustomed to the environment第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
