阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Canadians are blessed with an abundance of natural wonders with enough lakes, mountains and rivers to explore for a lifetime. We’ve also got some of the most shocking waterfalls on Earth.
Pissing Mare Falls—Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador
Pissing Mare Falls may have a funny sounding name but they’re no joke: in fact, they’re one of the highest waterfalls in Canada. Located in the beautiful Gros Morne National Park, the falls are only accessible by boat tour.
Takakkaw Falls—Yoho National Park, British Columbia
Takakkaw translated from Cree loosely means the “magnificent”, and it’s a
suitable word for the second-highest waterfalls in Canada. After a steep drive up a winding road, these falls are only a short hike from the parking lot along a wheelchair accessible path.
Niagara Falls—Niagara Falls, Ontario
Niagara Falls are the most famous waterfalls in Canada. Actually they are made up of three different falls—the Horseshoe Falls, the most powerful in North America, are the only one located on the Canadian side. Melting glaciers(冰川) formed the falls thousands of years ago and the beautiful green colour is due to dissolved salt and finely ground(磨) rock.
Bridal Veil Falls—Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, British Columbia
Pretty and delicate, the Bridal Veil Falls are located just east of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and really do look like a bride with a beautiful veil(面纱), with water gently pouring over smooth rock. An easy 15-minute walk to the falls takes you through rich leaves. Picnic tables are available, and there are lots of opportunities for viewing wildlife along the way.
( )21. Where are Pissing Mare Falls?
A. Near British Columbia.
B. In a beautiful small park.
C. On the highest mountain in Canada.
D. Between Newfoundland and Labrador.
( )22. How did Niagara Falls come into being?
A. It remains a mystery.
B. It originated from several rivers.
C. It was formed by the melting glaciers.
D. It was made by dissolved salt and finely ground rock.
( )23. What can you do in Bridal Veil Falls?
A.Hunting wildlife.
B. Having a picnic.
C. Collecting salt.
D. Buying veils.
B
The world is getting older, fast. And as more people retire each year, fewer working-age people will be there to replace them. Bond rating agency Moody's says that will lead to a decline in household savings; reducing global investments-which in turn, will lead to slower economic growth around the world. But experts say it's not too late to mitigate(减轻)the economic impact of the world's aging populations.
In Japan, there are special playgrounds for the elderly. In Italy, dance classes for seniors are part of the "good life". And in Germany-the rapid pace of retirements has become a bigger issue than unemployment. They are the world's "Super Aged" nations-the term for countries where at least 20 percent of the population is 65 years or older.
In five years, six more countries will join the ranks of the super-aged. And by 2030, that number will rise to 34.“That will translate into reductions in labor supply, and aging will have a significant negative impact on global growth," Elena Duggar, head of Moody's Sovereign Risk Division, said.
Business research group, the Conference Board says aging could shave as much as
one percent off global growth in the next 10 years. "Ignoring the coming changes is risky," says economist Fariborz Ghadar, author of Gloal Tectonics-What Every Business Needs to Know. "Economic growth rates will slow down, jobs will not be available the young, and there is going to be conflict both internally in certain countries and externally. There'll be backlash(反冲) against immigrants and that's not the kind of world we really want," said Ghadar. But the solution may be as close as a nation's borders.
While consumer buying patterns will change as populations age, Kishore Kulkari believes targeted career training and productivity gains through technology could offset the decline in workers.
"It is a misalignment(未对准) of demand rather than a total and a drastic change in the demand. And it is a challenge which we can easily accept and tackle as it comes to us ,” he said. Kulkarni adds that aging will be less of a challenge in countries where elders are seen as assets rather than liabilities(责任;义务).But nearly all the experts say young workers, in the future, will work longer and retire later than seniors today.
( )24. Which of the following is not the result of the aging population?
A. Job opportunities may not be available for the young.
B. It will lead to a decline in household savings
C. Economic growth rates will slow down around the world.
D. More and more immigrants will pour into the countries with aging populations. ( )25.What can we infer according to Fariborz Ghadar?
A . People around the world should be aware of the risk involved in aging .
B. Aging will have a significant negative impact on global growth.
C. Young workers, in the future, will work longer and retire later than seniors today.
D. Aging will cause conflicts both internally and externally in certain countries. ( )26. The underlined word "offset" probably_____________
A. compare with
B. cancel out
C. compete against
D. set off
( )27. What is mainly talked in the article?
A. Aging population will slow global economic growth.
B. Consumer buying patterns will change as populations age.
C. Elders are seen as assets rather than liabilities.
D. The impacts of aging population are great.
C
There’s a lot we know about eggs: they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however, is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones. According to Sharman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman’s Family Farms, genetics(基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell colour and thus the egg’s price.
The chicken breed(品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment(色素) genes, which coat the egg and result in a coloured shell during the egg-laying process. Although all eggs start out white in colour, shell colour can
range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds, Hickman adds. Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lay white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.
Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers. Hens that produce coloured eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.
Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently, it’s impossible to know their nutritional make-up from the shell colour alone, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says. “But it’s important for people to know that the colour of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”
What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on, according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is, don’t judge an egg by its shell colour.
( )28. Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs?
A. Which eggs are difficult to break.
B. How eggs can be cooked healthily.
C. Why coloured eggs are more expensive.
D. What the best time to eat eggs should be.
( )29. What makes the eggshell colour different?
A. The hen’s breed.
B. The size of the hen.
C. The colour of the eggs inside.
D. The length of the laying process. ( )30. Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more?
A. They lay brown eggs.
B. Their eggs are larger.
C. Their eggs sell better.
D. They are productive.
( )31. What can we learn from Malkani’s words in the last paragraph?
A. It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.
B. It’s meaningless to study an egg’s colour.
C. Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.
D. An egg’s nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.
D
Every year. the Joint Mathomatics Meeting brings more than 5,000 math lovers together. It’s the largest math meeting in the world. In January 2024, mathematicians flew to the meeting in Baltimore, Md., to learn about new ideas and talk about their work. Many even came to admire the latest in mathematical art.
The meeting included an entire art exhibition. Visitors felt amazed at sculptures made from metal, wood and folded paper. One was based on a supersized Rubik’s cube. Many like triangles, were arranged in strange and surprising sizes and colors. The collection also included drawings and paintings inspired by the study of numbers, curves (曲线) and patterns.
Art and math may seem like a strange pairing.People usually experience art through
their senses. They see a painting or listen to music. If this art moves them, they will have an emotional response. Working at math problems is usually viewed as something you think about—not feel. But connections between the two fields reach far back in time. Sculptors and architects in some ancient civilizations included numbers and math ideas into their works.
Henry Segerman is a mathematician and artist. When he was in high school, in England, he was good at math and art. But he had to choose. “I went in the math direction back then,” he says. He thought it difficult to succeed as an artist.
Still, Segerman’s math studies led him into the visual areas of math, such as geometry. In 2015, Segerman and some math art friends created a virtual-reality artwork. Participants can put on a pair of VR goggles to float around and through four-dimensional shapes. Art makes it possible to interact (互动) with these shapes, which would be impossible to create in our three-dimensional world. As beautiful as it is to see, Segerman’s work also offers a new view on mathematica l ideas. ( )32. What distinguishes the exhibits at the meeting?
A. They are art works with high technology.
B. They reflect the long history of math.
C. They are made based on math ideas.
D. They turn visual art into specific math.
( )33. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?
A. They seem extremely hard to appreciate.
B. They’re experienced in different ways.
C. They’ve been separated since ancient times.
D. They fail to bring about people’s responses.
( )34. What can we learn from Hen ry Segerman’s story?
A. Math learning promotes the creation of art.
B. Math makes art easier to understand.
C. Math is actually the origin of fine art.
D. One can’t easily succeed in math.
( )35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Real artists will stand the test of math.
B. Math and art turns out a great combination.
C. Modern artists turn into mathematicians.
D. Artists make math make a kind of art.

36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is ot necessarily so, however. Anyone cab become a better student if he or she wants to . Here's how : Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will
force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a comer of your room , free of everything but study materials . No games , radios or television . When you sit down to study , concentrate on the subject .
Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly , the material will become more meaningful , and you'll remember it longer .
Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be over-worried.
40 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these .
A . There are other methods that might help you with your studying .

On a recent sunny, dry fall morning, I found the last outdoor table at my favourite café. Thinking about it as I finished up, I realized that whether or not the woman had fair claim to the table was unimportant. The emotion of the situation—the look of hurt on her face—had 53 me, and I had the ability to do something about it.
That isn’t always the case with every feeling, situation, or injustice we 54 unexpectedly in our days. But as the early 20th century writer Orison Swett Marden once said, “Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. 55 common occasions and make them great.”

My Dad's Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor and lovely apartment on the台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨)in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the
balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife just enough to fit in a grain of barley(芽). Then he wrapped the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. "No one should touch them," he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom u sed to tell us :“Do not touch daddy's flowers .”For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

Possible version 1:
One day , my elder sister , who loved dad very much , had a great idea .Wanting to help dad , she cut the flowers from their stems and arranged them on the floor. She believed that dad would be very pleased to see them that way . When mom realized what my sister had done , she didn't say a word . My sister didn't understand why we were so quiet without a word of appreciation.
When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals. He looked towards the street to see if there was one from the neighbors' children who could have done it. Then he entered the living room and looked at mom in silence. We all waited for a punishment . Mom , who always taught us to tell the truth , looked at Dad and said , " We have no bad neighbors in our area."Then with a nice tone she continued, "No outsider did this great job, only our lovely daughter Linda." Dad's face changed from tense to a smile and then he said, "Do I have a better flower than my lovely daughter ? " My sister smiled and gave dad a big hug .

M: How much is first class and how long does it take?
W: It’s light. First class would cost $8. 00. I guess it will take about eight to ten days to arrive.
M: And parcel post?
W: Sending it parcel post would be cheaper, but it wouldn’t arrive for about a month.
The rate for parcel post is $4.90.
M: Oh, I want it to arrive earlier than that. I’ll mail it first class.
W: What’s in the package? I need to know in order to complete the form.
M: A pair of glass earrings. I packed them well, so I’m sure they won’t break. Are there any other forms I need to fill out?
W: Yes, one more. It’s a customs declaration on which you declare what item or items are in the package or their value.
M: Here it is.
W: Oh, you forgot to put a return address on this package. It’s not a post office regulation, but we strongly recommend that all mails have a clear return address. M: OK. I’ll do it right now. I’ll also buy ten 60 cent sta mps.
W: OK. Here’s your change.。
