When a fire happened in East Africa’s biggest second-hand clothes market inNairobi, Kenya last week, the managerWilliam Ruto, went there at once to telltraders that the government would doeverything to help them to rebuild theirbusiness.
But perhaps Ruto should have answereda more important question: whether Gikombamarket will be in business a year fromnow if a ban on the importation ofsecond-hand clothes into east Africa comesinto force.
In January, east African head of statessuggested that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzaniashould stop importing used clothes to help the local textile industry.
Kenya alone imports around 100,000tonnes of second-hand clothes a year ---manyof which were sent to shops in the west. AnOxfam-owned second-hand clothes shop in Senegal sees, for example, a Forever 21 dressonce worn by a young woman in London findits way into the room of a university studentIn Kenya. But if the ban goesthrough, Kenyans will be forced to buy locallyproduced clothes, giving textile producers achance to re-enter the market they lost tocheap imports from abroad.
The collapse of Kenya’stextile industry dates back to the early 1980s,when it opened up the local market tosecond-hand clothes. The clothes soon caughtthe eye of the young population, leading to thecollapse of many of Kenya s textile factories.
According to local media reports, therewere 500,000 people working in the textileindustry in the 1980s. Today, that number hasfallen by more than 96% to around 20,000.
Banning the importation of used clothesis the government’s latest effort to save anindustry and to recreate some of those lostjobs. But, a ban could hurt another group ofKenyans who depend on the second-handclothes trade to make a living.

B. They are sold at high prices.
C. They are not popular with the locals.
D. They do no good to the local industry.

A. It developed very slowly.
B. It produced very cheap clothes.
C. It played a role in creating Jobs.
D. It produced clothes especially foryoung people.
60. What does the author think of theimportation ban?
A. It won’t come into force.
B. It can’t save the textile industry.
C. It is a wonderfully wise decision.
D. It has advantages and disadvantages.
C
People have speculated(思索)for centuriesabout a future without work. Some imagine that
the coming work-free world will be defined(定义) by inequality: A few wealthy people will ownall the capital, and the masses will struggle in awasteland. A different prediction holds that without jobs to give their lives meaning, futurepeople will simply become lazy and depressed.
But it doesn’t necessarily follow fromfindings like these that a world without workwould be filled with dissatisfaction. Such visions are based on the downsides of being unemployedin a society built on the concept of employment. In the absence of work, a society designed withother ends in mind could provide strikinglydifferent circumstances for the future of labor and leisure.
These days, spare time is relatively rare formost workers. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel tired,”says JohnDanaher, a lecturer at the National University ofIreland, adding, “Ina world in which I don’t haveto work, I might feel rather different”—perhaps different enough to throw himself into a hobby with the enthusiasmusually reserved for professional matters.
Daniel Everett, an anthropologist(人类学家)at Bentley University studied a group ofhunter-gathers in the Amazon called the Piraha foryears. According to Everett, while some mightconsiderhunting and gathering work, hunter-gatherers don’t. “They think of it as fun,” he says. “They don’t have a concept of work theway we do.”
Everett described a typical day for thePiraha: A man might get up, spend a few hoursfishing, have a barbecue, and play until theevening.
Does this relaxing life lead to the depressionand purposelessness seen among so many of today’s unemployed? “I’ve never seen anythinglike depression there, except people who are
physically ill,” Everett says. While many mayconsider work necessary for human life, work as it exists today is a relatively new invention in thecourse of human culture. “We think it’s bad to just sit around with nothing to do,”says Everett. “For the Piraha, it's quite a desirable state.”
61. Which of the following can describe people’s predictions about the work-free world?
A. Optimistic.
B. Negative.
C. Accurate.
D. Alarming.
62. What does the underlined word“downsides”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Risks.
B. Reasons.
C. Challenges.
D. Disadvantages.
63. What might John Danaher agree with?
A. Work is the most important thing in life.
B. People don't know how to balance workand life.
C. People may live a charmed life in awork-free future.
D. Higher unemployment makes life tougherfor workers.
64. Why is Daniel Everett’s study mentioned?
A. To prove John Danaher’s opinion.
B. To show a future life without work.
C. To compare different opinions on work.
D. To introduce a special group in the Amazon.

If you were to look at the pictures of my earlyyears, you would be left with the impression that Iwas a happy child. You couldn't miss the extralarge set of buck teeth (龅牙).
One of the many nicknames my father gaveme was Bucky Beaver. To Dad, and to me, BuckyBeaver was an expression of love straight from theheart. Unfortunately, my younger brother, Johndidn't work under the same rules. “Hey, BuckyBeaver!”John would say as he rocketed past myfriends and me on his bike. Occasionally, when wewere old enough to walk to the cornerice creamstore, where all the coolkids hung out, Iwouldwait for my order at the walk-up window. Then I'dhear, “Order for Bucky Beaver!” and see mybrother running off. My appetite gone, I would return home, defeated.
It seems that I could do nothing to change his taunts (嘲弄的言语). He used to call me SmellyKelley. To avoid any truth behind that name, all Ihad todo was routinely bathe. However, the teeth, although I brushed them every day, still stuck out.
Even my mom, who was supposed to be myadvocate, crossed the line. When she sent ourschool pictures to my grandparents in Seattle, Momwould call first. “I sent the kids'school pictures toyou today,”Mom would say in an apologetic tone. “Yes.” she continued. “Kelley? Uh huh...well,”-- with a nervous laugh—“we’re hoping she’ll growinto them.” She wasn't talking about my feet.
When I was eight years old, three-quarters ofmy front left tooth was knocked out and ended upin the dirt while I was playing on the schoolplayground. I didn't feel shocked by the fact that Ihad lost part of my tooth. To me, it was just onemore in a line of many that had already fallen out,or
were on their way. Losing a tooth up to thatpoint had been a cause for celebration, but I got anentirely new reaction when Iopened the door to myhouse after school that day. “Hi, Mom!”I yelled, smiling extra wide to show off my new look. “Oh, my God!”Mom said. She was shocked andpale-faced, staring down at me.
The next thing I remember is that I was lyingin a chair at the dentists. The good dentistannounced there was no way to save the toothbecause what could have been saved was still lyingsomewhere in the dirt on the school playground. Regardless, a crown(齿冠) was the way to go. Ashiny silver half-crown covered what remained ofmy left center buck tooth. Things didn’t improve when it graduated to a full-sized crown. It didn’tchange the fact that my teeth still stuck out.
My protests (抗议) about my brother’sname-calling about my teeth fell on deaf ears until
the summer before the sixth grade. That’s when my parents finally acknowledged my “condition”was not going to improve on its own. That’s whenthe idea of braces (牙箍) was first introduced.
Finally, the big day arrived. Once againfound myself lying in a chair knew it would beworth it to finally be able to avoid my brother’s taunting. Once I got home, I inspected Dr. Ellis’work closely.
At that moment my brother came. Silently,John eyed my transformation. He knew the days ofBucky Beaver were officially over. But then hiseyes slowly began to narrow, and the corner ofhis mouth curled up slightly. Squaring(使…变平) his shoulders, John turned andpositioned
himself for a quick getaway, as he yelled back over his shoulder, “Hey! Brace Face!”
65. What did John do at the ice cream store?
A. He treated cool kids to ice creams.
B. He asked the author to go home for dinner.
C. He teased the author in the presence of otherkids.
D. He speciallyordered an ice creamfor theauthor.

Do pretty school uniforms lead to early romance?
A technical secondary school in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu province, planned to order Korean-style school uniforms for students, but parents opposed the move, believing that the new uniforms looked too good and would encourage early romances among the students, the Jinling Evening Paper reported Monday.
Parents
“My daughter was so excited about the Korean-style uniform, saying it’s her dream to wear mini-skirt to school every day,” a mom surnamed Cheng complained. “My daughter also called her classmates to talk about how handsome the boys looked in the uniform!”
Cheng looked on the Internet and found that most Korean schoolboy uniforms are similar to western suits. “They are so handsome! My daughter is a fan of Korean fashion, that’s why she is crazy about the uniform!” Cheng said. “If the students wear such beautiful uniforms, how can they study well?
I prefer the sports wear which makes me think of health and positive thinking.”
School
“The plan to change the current school uniform from sports wear has been cancelled,”an employee of the school told the Jinling Evening Paper.
“The students dislike the present uniform, so the school took advice from the students last November, knowing that most of students prefer Korean-or Japanese-style school uniforms. We know cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou have changed their sports wear school uniforms to more fashionable uniforms,” an employee surnamed Lin said.
“However, we had to stop the plan because many parents are strongly against it. Some parents think it’s just a way for the school to make money, and others think the new uniforms will take students’ attention away from their studies,” Lin said.
When asked about the possibility of problems with early romance between students because of the
more fashionable uniforms, Lin said he hadn’t considered it. He, however, agreed that the Korean-style uniform makes the students more charming.
Students
The students are very disappointed about the school’s final decision. They think the sports wear uniforms make them look androgynous (难分性别).
They said the Korean-style uniform has many advantages such as raising interest in class and lifting confidence. It is also considered to be a good way to develop their sense of pride for the school and help then create good temperaments(气质).
As for concerns about romance, the students believe that love is love and bears no relationship to the uniform.
Education department
“We don’t have a unified (统一的) standard for school uniforms. The schools can choose their own styles. Either sports wear or uniforms are ok,”an official from the Nanjing Bureau of Education said.

Dear editor,
With the development of science and technology, mobile payment is gaining popularity in China. Recently our class has held a discussion about it and opinions are divided.
60% of the students are in favor of mobile payment. Firstly, it is easy to operate. They just need to take a smart phone instead of cash or bank cards. Meanwhile, it’s widely accepted in different places, ranging from big shopping malls to stallholders. It is really convenient to consumers. In addition, they could enjoy some discounts with online payment.
However, about 40% of the students are concerned about its security. It is likely that personal information could be let out and money stolen. Besides, they tend to buy more than what they really need by paying online. Also it’s difficult for some old people to adapt to it.
From my perspective, I am happy to embrace the new trend. Undoubtedly, paying online will contribute to our easier life and it will definitely improve our living standards.
