A group of artists, writers and intellectuals has launched a new “university” in London, designed to help those too tied up with work to appreciate the finer things in life, like art, books and travel.
The School of Life, operating out of a small shop in the arty district of Bloomsbury, describes itself as a “chemist for the mind” that plans to offer “cultural solutions to everyday ailments (疾病)”. It hopes to inspire those who have got out of the habit of reading decent books, cannot keep conversation flowing at dinner parties, or need to expand their holiday horizons. The philosopher Alain de Botton, author of How Proust Can Change Your Life, and Sophie Howarth, a former curator (馆长) at the Tate Modem Gallery, are among the staff members.
The founders believe that people with too little time to spare need instruction in how to live a more fulfilled (有成就感的) existence. Perhaps you have a burning question for a paleontologist(古生物学家). “Perhaps you’re considering a career change and want to talk first-hand to a photographer or landscape designer. The School of Life has a large professional staff who are willing to meet with you for an hour of chat in exchange for a small fee,” the website explains, listing 50 experts.
Among courses being offered later this year are instruction in life, love, work, family and politics. A typical course, in love, will explore why relationships are so complicated and why attraction ebbs and flows. “We draw on ideas from philosophy, psychoanalysis (心理分析), literature and art. We discover what the likes of Plato, Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Freud had to say about compassion , empathy and self-love,”

On August 25, an American family’s vacation went terribly wrong. A man, his wife and their three children stopped at a shooting range (靶场) in the southwestern state of Arizona, where people pay to fire guns at targets. Charles Vacca worked for the business, called Bullets and Burgers. He helped the family’s nine-year-old girl shoot
a submachine gun called an Uzi. But the girl lost control of the weapon. At least one bullet hit Mr. Vacca in the head. He fell to the ground. Later, he died of his injuries.
No one has been charged with a crime. In fact, the families of both Mr. Vacca and the girl have said they feel very bad for each other. But the event has made Americans talk once again about guns and children. In the United States, federal law bars anyone younger than 18 from owning a handgun. But, many state laws give young people the right to shoot all kinds of guns under certain conditions.
Some Americans say children (like adults) need to learn to shoot a weapon so they can protect themselves. Others say shooting guns is just part of the way they grow up. But “safety” is a word many people use when it comes to children and guns. Last year, the Pew Research Center reported that over one-third of American homes have a gun. So, the argument goes, children could easily see a gun at home, or in the home of a friend or neighbor, and decide to fire it. Indeed, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital says about 1,500 children die every year from a gun accident. Many more are injured.
Laura Cutilletta is a lawyer for the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. She said most U. S. states have firm restrictions on keeping children away from guns in the home. But state laws about children hunting or shooting for fun, such as at a shooting range, are much looser.
In general, most states permit children to hunt or use a gun when an adult is with them. But, Laura Cutilletta notes that even a responsible adult cannot protect a child who is too young to shoot a gun safely. And, she says no one needs to shoot the most powerful guns just for fun.
8. The serious accident happened because ________.
A. Charles Vacca helped the girl shoot the gun.
B. the family went to the shooting range to play guns.
C. the girl was too young to control such a powerful gun.
D. Bullets and Burgers was a dangerous place to play in.
9. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 2?
A. permit
B. suspect
C. accuse
D. forbid
10. What does Laura Cutilletta view about people’s shooting guns for fun?
A. Laws must be made to allow people to use guns safely.
B. She thinks that people who shoot a gun should be fined.
C. She objects to the idea that people play guns just for fun.
D. Adults should be responsible for the safety of children.
11. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. a gun accident happening at a shooting range
B. a discussion about children’s shooting for fun safely
C. adults’ responsibility to keep children away from guns
D. Americans’ legal right for possessing guns at home

Levi Strauss did not invent jeans, but he is considered the first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that today is part of Germany. In 1847 he and his family immigrated to the United States. Levi Strauss
opened a small dry goods store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These pants were especially useful for miners in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material. Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth called denim (牛仔布). Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis. Davis had invented a process for making rivets (铆钉) for jeans. These little metal connectors helped hold the pieces of cloth together to make the jeans stronger.
In 1873, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent (专利证) for their invention. That meant no one else could legally copy it without their permission. They began producing what they called “copper-riveted waist overalls”. In 1928, the Levi Strauss Company registered (注册) the word Levi’s as a trademark for their pro duct. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington has one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s.
Writer James Sullivan published a book called “Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon”. In it, he says jeans represent two America n values: creativity and rebellion. Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans in movies. Today jeans still come in blue but also lots of other colors. They can also differ widely in price. You might find jeans for 15 dollars in an American discount store. However, they can also sell for thousands of dollars a pair.
Some people like to buy Jeans that look fresh and new. Others like to buy new jeans that are tom an d look old. Early rock and roller Gene Vincent released “Blue Jean Bop” in 1956. The energetic song includes a line with the word “dungaree”. That is another way of saying blue jeans. It is an old Hindi word meaning coarse calico, or denim. The word came from the name of a village that is now Mumbai.
12. What can we learn about Levi Strauss from Paragraph 1?

A. make the Jeans wear well
B. compete with other jean-makers
C. gain a patent to popularize his products
D. decorate the jeans to make them more beautiful

A. Jeans show the different tastes of people.
B. Jeans have become important American values.
C. Jeans enjoy a wide popularity in the life of American people.
D. Jeans were more popular among cowboys in the old Wild West.
15. The passage mainly talks about .

In your struggle, he is always there ___20___ you.。
