Over-speed Trip Device
The over-speed trip device is electronically controlled. Air at max. 30 bar is used as the operating medium. The engine speed monitoring system ( Spemos ) is capable of sensing two different over-speed situations.
The alarm function (at 110% speed, the normal speed of the engine is 600 r/min) will temporarily reduce the fuel racks to "no-fuel" position.
The stop function (at 115% speed) will cause a shutdown of the engine.
The reason for having two different over-speed functions is to prevent the engine from being stopped when a sudden rejection of load causes an over-speed situation. Over-speed Alarm Function
This function will act as an over-speed limiter in case the engine has an overshoot of 10%(660r/m).
The electro pneumatic over-speed device moves each fuel rack to the "no-fuel” position by means of a pneumatic cylinder mounted on each high pressure fuel pump. The three-way over-speed solenoid valve receives the signal from the electronic speed measuring system (Spemos). However, this solenoid valve can also be activated by other sources.
When the solenoid valve is activated, air is supplied to a second three-way valve which directs pressurized air to the pneumatic cylinders. The pistons of the pneumatic cylinders actuate the fuel pump rack to the "no-fuel” position. Speed setting adjustments are to be made i n the Spemos control box.
1.According to the passage, when the engine has a speed of 630r/m,
A.the alarm function will thoroughly reduce the fuel rod to zero position
B.the stop function will quickly stop the engine
C.the governor still controls the engine
D.the engine speed will continuously increase
2.according to the passage, we know that •
A.the speed monitoring sensor can detect the difference between two overshoots
B.even when the over-speed alarm function is activated the engine will not be stopped.
C.The reason for having over-speed trip device is to prevent the engine from being stopped.
D.Air at max. 30 bar is used to stop the engine quickly in case of a 15% overshoot.
3.It can be inferred from the passage that "a second three-way valve" is
A. A solenoid valve
B. A hydraulic valve
C. A pneumatic valve
D.An electron pneumatic valve
4.The over-speed trip device is controlled
A. Manually
B. hydraulically
C. pneumatically D・ electronically
5.The stop function will cause
A. a sudden rejection of load
B. the solenoid valve to be activated
C. a shutdown of the engine
D. the engine speed to drop
Passage2
The diesel engine is a form of internal combustion engine similar to that used in a bus. Its power is expressed as brake horsepower (bhp). This is the power put out by the engine. Effective horsepower is the power developed by the piston in the cylinder, but some of this is lost by friction within the engine. The power output of a modern marine diesel engine is about 40000 brake horsepower. This is now expressed in kilowatts. By comparison the engine of a small family car has an out put of about 80 bhp. Large diesel engines which have cylinder nearly 3 ft in diameter,
turn at the relatively slow speed of about 108 rpm・ These are known as slow-speed diesel engines. They can be connected directly to the propeller without gearing. Alt hough higher power could be produced by higher revolutions, t his would reduce the efficiency of the propeller, because a propeller is more efficient, the larger it is and the slower it turns. These large slow running engines are used in the larger merchant ships, particularly in tankers and bulk carriers. The main reason is their low fuel consumption. More and more of the larger merchant vessels are being powered by medium-speed diesel engines. These operate between 150-450 rpm, therefore they are connected to the propeller by gearing. This type of engine was once restricted to smaller cargo ships, but now they are used in fast cargo liners as well as in tankers and bulk carriers. They are cheaper than slow-speed diesel engines, and their small size and weight can result in a smaller, cheaper ship.
Why do larger merchant vessels use slow-speed diesel engines?
because they turn at about 108r/min
because their propellers car more efficient
because they can be connected directly to the propeller without gearing because they are fuel-saving
According to the author s standpoint, what does the efficiency of slow-speed diesel engine propellers depend on?
A. propeller power B・ both propeller size and revolution
C. propeller
D. propeller revolutions
3.Why do medium-speed diesel engines have gearing?
A. in view of propeller efficiency
B. in view of engine revolution
C. in view of fuel consumption
D. in view of merchant ship size
4.What is probably the main reason why medium - speed diesel engines were once restricted to smaller cargo ships?
A.They are cheaper than slow-speed diesel engine.
B.The fuel consumption of the medium speed engine is more than that of the slow speed engine.
C.They operate between 150 and 450 r/m.
D.Smaller cargo ships require more efficient propeller.
