Baby girls make their way directly for dolls as soon as they can crawl, while boys will head for the toy cars, a study has shown. The findings, the first to show differences in very young babies, suggest there is a biological basis to their preferences.
Psychologists Dr. Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment involving 90 babies aged 9 months to 36 months.
The babies were allowed to choose from seven toys. Some were typically boys’ toys—a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest were girls’ toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from the toys, and could pick whichever toy they liked; their choices and the amount of time they spent playing with each toy were recorded.
Of the youngest children (9 to 14 months), girls spent significantly longer playing with the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did. Among the two and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll while only two boys briefly touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing with cars, which the girls barely touched. There was no link between the parents’ view on which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls, and the children’s choices.
Dr. Brenda Todd said, “Children of this age are already exposed to much socialization. Boys may be given ‘toys that go’ while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males through evolution have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting instincts (本能), while girls prefer warmer colors such as pink, the color of a newborn baby.”
41. Baby boys and girls have different toy preferences
probably because ______.
A. baby boys are much more active
B. baby girls like bright colors more
C. their parents treat them differently
D. there is a natural difference between them
42. Both baby boys and baby girls like to play with

A. Nine-month-old baby boys don’t play with
dolls at all.
B. Two-year-old baby girls sometimes play
with cars and balls.
C. The older the babies are, the more obvious
their preferences are.
D. Parents should teach their babies to share
each other’s toys.
44. What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd draw
from the results of the study?
A. Adults purposely influence their babies’
preference.
B. Babies’ preference isn’t affected by social
surroundings.
C. Baby boys preferring to moving toys will be
good at hunting.
D. Baby girls preferring warmer colors will be
warm-hearted.

Forget counting sheep, next time you are having trouble going to sleep, try putting on a jazz CD.
Researchers have shown just 45 minutes of relaxing music before bedtime can make for a restful night. The Taiwanese researchers studied the sleeping patterns of 60 elderly people with sleep problems. They told the Journal of Advanced Nursing how the technique was easy to learn and lacked the side effects of other treatments.
The study participants were either given a choice of music to listen to before going to sleep or nothing at all. The music group was able to choose from six tapes that featured soft, slow music—around 60~80 beats per minute—such as jazz, folk or orchestral pieces.
Listening to music caused physical changes that aided restful sleep, including a lower heart and respiratory(呼吸的)rate, the researchers found.
The people in the music group reported a 35% improvement in their sleep, including better and longer night-time sleep and less dysfunction(机能障碍)during the day.
Lead author Professor Hui-Ling Lai of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi General Hospital and the University of Taiwan said, “The music group reported a 26% overall improvement in the first week and this figure continued to rise as they mastered the technique of relaxing into sedative(有镇静作用的)music.”
Professor Jim Horne, from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough Uni versity, said, “If anyone is a bit worried before they go to bed, then anything that can help calm them down and relax is a good thing.”
“Some say making sure older people sleep less in the afternoon and get plenty of exposure to daylight can help them ge t a better night’s sleep.”
46. In the researchers’ opinion, listening to music is better than other treatments because ______.
A. listening to music can save time and money
B. other treatments have no effect at all
C. people suffer too much when trying other
treatments
D. listening to music is easy to learn and lacks side
effects of other treatments
47. The Journal of Advanced Nursing is probably
______.
A. a medical organization
B. a radio station
C. an academic magazine
D. a research centre
48. Which of the following facts can aid restful sleep?
A. Reading exciting stories in the day.
B. Staying longer in daylight.
C. Doing some exercise before sleeping.
D. Counting sheep when feeding them.
49. Professor Jim Horne’s opinion is ______.
A. completely different from Professor Hui-Ling
Lai’s
B. that only by listening to sedative music can help
one get restful sleep
C. that anything that can calm the slightly-worried
down and relax will aid restful sleep
D. exactly the same as Professor Hui-Ling Lai’s
50. Which one is not included in the benefit of
listening to music?
A. Helping people calm them down and relax.
B. Causing a lower heart.
C. Causing respiratory rate.
D. Helping old people sleep less in the daytime.

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table, I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” ,that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school.
Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why? Human development is depended not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact,
allows for a great deal of control covering the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
51. According to the author, feeling depressed is
________.
A. a sure sign of a mental problem in a child
B. a mental state present in all humans, including
children
C. something that can’t be avoided in children’s
mental development
D. something hardly to be expected in a young
child
52. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about
the adult world ________.
A. through connection with society
B. gradually and under guidance
C. naturally without being taught
D. through watching television
53. According to the author, that today’s children
seem adultlike results from ______.
A. the widespread influence of television
B. the poor arrangement of teaching content
C. the fast pace of human scientific development
D. the rising standard of living
54. What does the author think of communication
through print for children?
A. It enables children to gain more social
information.
B. It develops children’s interest in reading and
writing.
C. It helps children to read and write well.
D. It can control what children are to learn.
55. What does the author think of the change in
today’s children?
A. He feels their adultlike behaviour is so funny.
B. He thinks the change worthy of note.
C. He considers it a rapid development.
D. He seems to be upset about it.

The water we drink and use was running short. We all have to learn what to stop
wasting water. One of the steps that we
should take are to find ways of reusing it.
Today in the most large cities, fresh water is
used only once and then it runs in the waste
system. But that is possible to pipe the used
water to a purifying factory, there the used
water can be treated with chemical materials
by the workers so that it can reused. But even
if every large city purified and reused it’s
water, we still would have enough water.
