It was May 1945 when what would become one of America’s most popular home-cooking techniques first entered the English dictionary. In her cookbook, How to Cook and Eat in Chinese, 55-year-old Chinese immigrant (移民) Chao Yang Buwei described a process common in her homeland, where cooks would cut meat and vegetables into small bites and tumble (翻滚) them rapidly to gether over heat. “The Chinese term for the technique, ch’ao, cannot be accurately translated into English,” Chao complained. For short, she decided, “We shall call it ‘stir-fry.’” The term soon made its way into the American language and has since taken on a life of its own.
Chao came to cooking unexpectedly. A doctor by profession, she gave up her medical career to move to the United States in 1921 after her husband, the famed linguist (语言学家) Chao Yuanren, was offered a job at Harvard. Bored at home and only able to speak a little English, she turned to cooking dishes that reminded her of China: soups with mushrooms and pork flavored with soy sauce.
She eventually agreed when a friend begged her to write a cookbook. Chao’s eldest daughter helped her translate recipes from Chinese to English, before her husband put the finishing touches on the language, often adding phrasing that even Chao recognized as awkward. This stylistic conflict resulted in a cookbook that Chao was “ashamed to have written,” as she declared in an author’s note.
The cookbook succeeded, going into multiple printings by the end of 1945, though critics largely overlooked the anger in Chao’s words. English-language Chinese cookbooks had been published as far back as 1911 in the United States, but Chao’s was the first that refused to westernize Chinese cooking. She may have given America a well-worn phrase, but she knew that some aspects of the immigrant experience resist translation. Chao’s contribution to American food culture should have been enough to make her into headlines, but the New York Times did not even honor her with an obituary (讣告) upon her death. How many other cooking pioneers like Chao, immigrants who didn’t silence their difference in order to gain broad approval, still await rediscovery?
24. Which of the following is true about “ch’ao”?
A. It is a cooking technique used only in America.
B. It quickly found a place in the American language.
C. It was accurately translated into “stir-fry” by Chao.
D. It means mixing together small pieces of materials.
25. What made Chao turn to traditional Chinese cooking?
A. Her interest in cooking.
B. Her profession as a doctor.
C. Inadaptability to life in America.
D. Encouragement from her husband.
26. What is most specia l about Chao’s cookbook?
A. Consistency in writing style.
B. Refusal to westernize Chinese cooking.
C. Success in pleasing the American taste.
D. Reflection of western culture.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Chao’s cookbook was largely overlooked by critics.
B. Chao followed the same trend as other cookbook writers.
C. Chao isn’t the only immigrant that deserves giving credit to.
D. Chao gained popularity for her unwillingness to silence her differences.

Communication is more than just words: it includes verbal and nonverbal signals (言语和非言语信号) that express meaning and emotions. However, some public-speaking coaches try to downplay the importance of language. They may mention the research reported in 1967 by Professor Albert Mehrabian and say that only 7 percent of the effectiveness of communication is down to language, while 38 percent depends on the tone of voice (语调) and 55 percent comes from body language. This has led coaches to focus mainly on developing a speaking style of confidence, grace, etc, and not worry so much about the words.
Unluckily, this is a complete misunderstanding of what Mehrabian found. His experiments were mainly about discovering how emotion was communicated. So for example, he wou ld test what would happen if someone said “That’s nice,” but said so in an angry tone of voice, or with frightening body language. Sure enough, in those situations, words don’t count for much. But it is unreasonable to use this for all speech. And Mehrabian is so sick of his findings being misused in this way that his website has a specially marked paragraph asking people not to do this.
Yes, communicating emotion is important, and for that, one’s tone of voice and body language do matter a great deal. But the whole content of a talk depends greatly on words. It’s words that tell a story, build an idea, explain a difficult problem, make a good reason, or provide a powerful call to action. So, if you hear someone tell you that body language matters more than verbal language in public speaking, please know that they are misunderstanding the science. Or for fun, you could just ask them to repeat their point only with gestures (手势)!
The fact that we can spread ideas with language is why human-to-human speaking matters. It is how our worldviews are built and shaped. Our ideas make us who we are. And speakers who have worked out how to spread their ideas into others’ minds are able to create ripple effects (连锁反应) of untold results.
28. What does the underlined word “downplay” in paragraph I mean?
A. Undervalue.
B. Stress.
C. Misunderstand.
D. Discuss.
29. What message does Mehrabian give in the paragraph shown on his website?
A. Do not misuse his name.
B. Do not misuse body language.
C. Do not misuse his research findings.
D. Do not misuse the tone of voice.
30. Why does the author jokingly advise us to ask someone to repeat their point only with gestures?
A. To support their view.
B. To prove them wrong.
C. To make fun of them.
D. To teach them a skill.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To offer advice to public speakers.
B. To introduce ways to communicate effectively.
C. To point out the importance of words.
D. To show some means of communicating emotion.

Lovers of language and a little friendly competition have played the game of Scrabble (拼字游戏) for generations, but this bestselling board game has a lesser-known history, which began in our own backyard.
At the Queens Library at Fresh Meadows, a neighborhood in New York City, three friends meet weekly. Lynne Sherman, Pauline Bekele and Mona Fabricant first got to know each other in retirement (退休) over a game of Scrabble. They’ve kept their relationships for years thanks to meetings with the library’s Scrabble Club.
Their friendly competitions take place just a few neighborhoods away from a Scrabble landmark. Early versions of the game were first played in the social room at the Community United Methodist Church in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood in the northwestern corner of Queens. Standing at that place is a Scrabble-style street sign with letters showing points, just like in the game.
“Only people who know about the game of Scrabble are going to know at once what it is, and that’s why it’s my favorite sign, because it’s unique,” said Jason D. Antos, the executive director of the Queens Historical Society.
A game of strategy requiring spelling skills, a bit of math and the luck of the draw, Scrabble has left its mark. But who is the mastermind behind the beloved board game?
Antos said the creator was Alfred Mosher Butts, a local man of Jackson Heights who loved mind games. Butts came up with the idea for the game during the Great Depression, when he was a jobless architect living in a fifth-floor walk-up. Wanting to put some bread on the table, he turned his attention to the game. The rights to the game were later bought in 1948 by James Brunot, a retired director of the War Relief. It was Brunot who gave the game its popular name, Scrabble.
Today, Scrabble is played in English from India to Senegal and is sold in more than 30 languages. Nigeria often wins international competitions. From a competitive sport to a mind-expanding(拓展思维的) exercise, the game means different things to different people.
Back at the library, there’s on e reason above all to play Scrabble.
“Just —it’s fun,” Sherman said.
32. What can we learn about the game of Scrabble from paragraph 2?
A. It is a favorite of the elderly.
B. It encourages different styles of board games.
C. It makes the Queens Library well-known.
D. It serves as a bridge of friendship.
33. What makes the street sign unique according to Antos?
A. It was designed by him.
B. It is connected to Scrabble.
C. It stands in the heart of Queens.
D. It symbolizes friendly competitions.
34. Why did Butts begin to study the game?
A. To pass the time.
B. To challenge Brunot’s invention.
C. To make a living.
D. To get attention from the public.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Scrabble: building words, building connections
B. Scrabble: where language, strategy, and luck meet
C. Jackson Heights’ gift to the elderly: the game of Scrabble
D. From Jackson Heights to the world: the journey of Scrabble

Cellphones and Friends
Have you ever spent time with friends who ignored you because they were busy on their cellphones? Do you ever feel that your friends are distracted by their cellphones to the point of not hearing what you say in person? Or are you the one who pays more attention to a text conversation than a face-to-face interaction? The act of chatting on cellphones and ignoring friends is now called "phubbing"(低头症). Having your cellphone with you is necessary, because you need to deal with possible emergencies. 36 . Here are some suggestions.

Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, "I can't believe we only have two nights to finish it," Noah gid with a sigh. "I have no idea how I'll get I didn't say anything. Not because I was nervous at all---I wasn't nervous at all. I love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn't work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball friends. which happens once every month, and it's a chance for us older students to practice baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box(手工盒)onto the kitchen table, took out my "How Plants Eat" paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I'd come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love Abuela's world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7o'clock when I finally got home. I planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.
