I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an incom e. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start —there’s a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you’re too ashamed to say, “Well, I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there.” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商)who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal —that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck —of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position
where I now have my own name on a contract(合同)of the publisher —to be a published writer —is unbelievably rewarding(有回报旳).

When it comes to career success, it is a person’s brain rather than the appearance that matters most. Individuals with intelligence earn much more in their lifetime compared to those who have just good looks or are confident.
While beauty and attractiveness don’t play the last role in career success, it is the brain and intelligence that are the most important factors, said Timothy Judge, a University of Florida management professor who carried out a study into the subject. If there is some chance to make a choice between being smart, good-looking or confidence, the new findings show that, while the majority would choose all three qualities, the brains turn out to be the most important in achieving economic success.
Teachers are more likely to reward students who are intelligent, which increases their confidence and contributes further to their success, according to Professor Judge. He said that smart people also, in many cases, have the tendency to make better career choices, learn more on the job, negotiate their salary more effectively and adapt better to changes in the offices.
The results of the new study were based on the data that was collected from a national study of almost 200 men and women between the ages of 25 and 75. Over the course of a year, the investigators examined and assessed the appearance of all the participants by rating their photos on a scale from 1 to 7. The volunteers were
also given intelligence tests and rated on confidence.
The results show that intelligence is twice as important as a person’s appearance. Intelligence was ranked as the number one factor in determining income. Confidence came in second position and attractive appearance came in last place among the three factors studied.
However, the research also found that outer beauty still plays an important role in the real world and that an individual’s income prospect are improved by being good looking, The findings also suggest that some employers do have some prejudice towards those with good looks and the experts said that there is not much that can be done about this.
The findings show that “brains before beauty” does not tell the whole story, said Professor Judge. “We all want to believe this, but unfortunately it is not always the case.” As mentioned before, good looks might boost people’s confidence in a way that helps them to be promoted.
55. According to Professor Judge’s study, intelligent people _____________.
A. are more confident than people with good looks
B. are happier both in their lives and their career
C. have prejudice towards those with good looks
D. are more likely to achieve career success and a better income
56. Which of the following about the people surveyed is NOT true?
A. They were rated on their looks and confidence.
B. Most of them were teachers and students.
C. None of them were older than 75.
D. They underwent an intelligence test in the study.
57. What does the underlined w ord “boost” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Prevent.
B. Reduce.
C. Improve.
D. Hide.
58. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Attractive looks do affect one’s career success in the real world.
B. Confidence is twice as important as attractive looks.
C. The study was carried out over a number of years.
D. Most people prefer intelligence to good looks if they have the chance to choose.

Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere wall away from your college.
King’s Art Centre
A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.
You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get
more creative with paint – free of charge.
The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.
The Botanic Garden
The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.
The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.
Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.
The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake c alled ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron’s Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and
drun kenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridge shire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.
59. As is mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for ____.
A. attending the masters’ class
B. working with local artists
C. learning life drawing
D. seeing an exhibition
60. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are ____.
A. common insects
B. impressive plants
C. rarely-seen snakes
D. wildlife-enthusiasts
61. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed ____.
A. to fear pet bears
B. to like walking
C. to be a heavy drinker
D. to finish university in 1805
62. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Some places for weekend break.
B. A way to become creative in art.
C. The colorful life in the countryside.
D. Unknown stories of Cambridge University.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight.
A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk 'Dog', and dogs can learn how to talk 'Cat'.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets ─ to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
63. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to

D. smoothly

B. they look away from each other

A. have common interests
B. are less different than was thought

D. are less intelligent than was expected
66. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

Blind imitation (模仿)is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve you. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and victory, and know that they are cheering me on.”
67. Imitation proves useful when you .
A. know you are unique
B. lose the balance of life
C. begin to learn something new
D. get tired of routine practice
68. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should________.
A. forget daily fear and pain
B. choose the right example
C. ask others for decisions
D. stay away from stars
69. According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are .
A. desperate to influence others with their knowledge
B. ready to turn their original ideas into reality
C. eager to discover what their ancestors did
D. willing to accept others’ ideas
70. The trouble a creator faces is .
A. the lack of strong motivation
B. the absence of practical ideas
C. how to search for more materials
D. how to use imagination creatively
