Sir Henry Ste wart was certainly successful. I asked one day, soon after he’d retired
to attend his garden, what it was like to have achieved all of one’s ambitions. He looked down at his roses, and went on watering them. Then he said,“The only value in achieving one’s ambitions is that you then realize that they are not worth achieving.” Within a moment we were back to a safe discussion on the weather. That was two years ago.
I recall this incident, for yesterday, I was passing his house, and had drawn up my cart just outside his garden wall. I had pulled in from the road for no other reason than to
let a bus pass me. As I set there filling my pipe, I suddenly heard a shout of sheer joy
come from the other side of the wall.
I looked over. There stood Sir Henry doing nothing less than a dance of pure unashamed
delight. Even when he observed my puzzled face staring over the wall he did not seem
embarrassed, but shouted to me to climb over.
“Come and see, Jan. Look! I have done it at last! I have done it at last!”
There he was , holding a small box of earth in his hand. I observed three tiny shoots
out of it.
“And there were only three! ” he said, his eye laughing to heaven.
“Three what? ” I asked.
“Peach stones ”, he replied.“I’v e always wanted to make peach stones grow, ever since
I was a child, when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet.
And I used to plant them, and forget where I planted them. But now at last I have done it, and , what ’s more, I had only three stones, and there they are, one, two, three shoots,”he counted.

The World Wide Web is so common and popular that not a day goes by when we don’t use
the World Wide Web. Today it has become almost as important to every family as food and
water! This year, the World Wide Web has turned 25 years old. What many people don ’t know
is that the web was at first created to improve communication between thousands of scientists
in Switzerland.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee was a 34-year-old British physicist working as a software
engineer at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.Since CERN was a huge organization with thousands of scientists, communication between them was
becoming increasingly difficult.
Berners-Lee wanted to develop a system to solve the problem. His pa per suggested an information system, where a page on one computer could have a link to another page on another co mputer (connected through the Internet),allowing scientists to read lots of information quickly. However, Berners-Lee’s boss said that it sounded exciting but impossible.
Even though there were many difficulties and few supporters, Berners-Lee went on to
develop the World Wide Web. He came up with ideas such as Hyper-text Transfer Protocol ( 超文本传输协议 ) to allow computers to talk to each other, Hyper-text Markup Language (HTML)
to create the pages, a server to serve the pages, and a b rowser (阅读器 ) to see them.
In December 1990, the World Wide Web was demonstrated ( 显现 ) and in 1991,the WWWproject was made public, so that other programmers could develop their own browsers. Berners-Lee
believed that it could be used for more than scientific purposes. He wanted the Internet
to be easy for anyone to use— a free open
software. His wishes soon came true.
Although the World Wide Web has today turned into a completely different thing from
what it meant at first, it has become necessary and important to our lives, powering our
mobile technologies and the way we get information.
29.The World Wide Web was created to _____.

30.As for Berners-Lee’s paper, his boss _____.
A. felt puzzled about it
B. showed no interest in it
C. was certain about it
D. had no confidence in it
31. According to the text, Berners-Lee _____.
A. doesn ’t give up easily when in trouble
B. is a 55-year-old Swiss physicist
C. has worked at CERN for 25 years
D. knows little about the Internet
32. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The popularity of the web.
B. World Wide Web turns 25!
C. Tips on improving the website.
D. Interview with Tim Berners-Lee.

Sleeping in is one of the best parts of the weekend. After a long, exhausting work week, sometimes all you want to do is sleep. On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling
in anticipation. Now you can finally catch up on your sleep.
Except you can’t. When you open your eyes Saturday morning, it ’s still early. If this were a weekday, you ’d be up before your alarm. So what’s the deal?
We hate to break it to you, but you’ve pretty much done this to yourself. Your body
is very good at recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If you’ve got a 9-to-5 job, you’re getting up early five days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to
wake you at a certain time each day. You can shut off your alarm clock, but your body clock will just keep ticking.
There’s another reason that you probably don’t want to think about: You’re just not
as young as you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. Babies need between 16 and
20 hours. Teenagers shoul d (but often don’t) get nine hours a night. Younger and middle -aged adults need eight. In general, the older you get, the harder it is to snooze the day away.
Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your
body needs eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday,
you’d have to sleep an extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up. And experts say
even that may not be enough.
The bottom line: Sleep when you can, and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesn’t want a longer weekend?
33.What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?
A.You know that you will oversleep on Saturday morning.
B.You needn ’t get up early on Saturday morning, so you will have a better sleep.
C. Since you don’t work on Saturday, you needn’t go to sleep as usual.
D. You know that even though you needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, you will
wake as usual.
34.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Once you have set your body clock, it is not easy to change it.
B.If you have a 9-to-5 job, you are likely to develop a flexible body clock.
C.The author will not break the pattern, but you will do it yourself.
D. If you adjust your body clock accordingly, you are healthy.
35. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Howto get more sleep on Saturday mornings?
B. Why can’t I catch up on my sleep?
C. How to turn off my body clock on Saturdays?
D.Why can't I sleep in on weekends anymore?
