Parking has long been a major headache for drivers in Shanghai. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are one million cars on the road i n Shanghai but only enough public parking spaces to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.
The city is seeing a rise in private car owners. In March, the city sent out 2, 000 private car licenses(驾照), the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to 14, 600 yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.
By the year 2020, the number of automobiles in Shanghai will probably reach two million. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of new parking spaces should be built for these vehicles.
Downtown Shanghai is most short of parking spaces. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in downtown areas is not practical and doesn’t provide an ideal solution(解决办法). The idea of a“Park&Ride”system has been suggested. This means that drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway or bus stations and ride public transport to go downtown. lost their jobs and were living in and out of motels (汽车旅馆) with their
11-year-old son, Jason. They were in danger of losing their car for failure to
make payments for it.
One day last winter, Pauline found a wallet containing a credit card, an
airline ticket to New Zealand and $2, 394 in cash at a shopping center in the Los Angeles suburb of Buena Park.
“For a second I thought about taking the money, ” she said later. “But only for a second. It wasn’t our money and we don’t want to set a bad example to our son. ” She delivered the wall et and the contents to the nearest police station, where the owner reclaimed them. Police admitted that they were surprised when the Nichters walked into the police station with the wallet and the money.
Word of the honesty quickly got around, and a grateful community responded in kind. The Nichters received more than ten job offers and an apartment rent-free for six months. An anonymous donor brought the car payments up-to-date. Others gave cash. One elderly couple walked into the police station where Pauline had turned in the wallet and asked how much money had been in it. Many people think a telephone is necessary. But I think it is a pest (有害的事物) and a time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your own house, it often rings when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it? You are not. You think there may be some important news or message for you. I can make sure that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushed from the bath, or the table, or the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say, you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of sudden illness, accident, or fire? Of course, you are right. I think that in different circumstances—if I were a wealthy and powerful businessperson, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone necessary. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car as a necessity. My own business is using words but I see I must now stop using them, for I have had just been handed a note to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.

参考答案
My Plan For Summer Holiday
As the summer holiday i s drawing near, I plan to do something that I can’t afford during the school days.
First of all, I’ll go to the country to visit my grandparents. If possible, I’d like to go outdoors during the day to catch tadpoles for fun and experience life in the field as well. Getting close to nature not only benefits my health but also improves my practical skills.
Second, I’ll spend some time staying with my grandma, chatting with her and scrubbing her back. My grandma is lying in bed because of the age and sickness. She has done a lot to my family. I think it is time for me to do something for her.
I’m sure I’ll have a wonderful time during the summer holiday.
