第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分, 满分25分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A
One morning in 2003, a 19-year-old Amy Purdy left for her job as a nursery teacher, feeling healthy and ready for her day. Halfway through her morning, she started to feel achy and unwell. Once home, she had a fever and fell into a deep sleep that was impossible for her to shake.
After a short, tense ride to the nearest hospital, Purdy was given less than a two percent chance of surviving. Over the course of the 2.5month treatment that followed, she lost kidney (肾) function and hearing in her left ear—then her spleen and, eventually, both of her legs. What doctors thought was the flu ended up being a very deadly meningitis (脑膜炎) infection. Purdy’s life was changed forever.
It was when she was in bed for months that she started to think about that big life question: what was her story going to be? She began dreaming about snowboarding and visualized herself carving down a mountain of powder, feeling the wind on her face.
This made her return to the sport as a double-amputee (截肢者). Being back on the board was rough at first—several times, her board and her prosthetic (假体的) legs flew down the mountain without her. But Purdy had a strong will and set out to build her own prosthetics that would be purpose built for snowboarding. Purdy’s first home made snowboarding feet is on display in the Smithsonian now.
In 2005, after her 21st birthday—and the gift of a new kidney from her father—Purdy decided to start Adaptive Action Sports. Purdy and her family organized a team of snowboarders and began pushing for their sport to be part of the 2014 Paralympic Games in
Sochi, Russia. After being turned down several times, they were finally granted access to the Paralympic Games, appearing as para snowboarding for the first time in history. Since then, her snowboarding team has brought home six medals and raised the visibility of the sport.
Since her illness took her legs 18 years ago, Purdy has managed to squeeze as much achievement and joy out of her life as possible. “Maybe instead of looking at all our challenges and barriers as something negative or bad,” she proposes, “maybe we can look at them as little gifts that fire our imaginations.”
21. Amy Purdy eventually lost her legs because of________ .
A. a sudden accident
B. the serious infection
C. the sports training
D. the kidney failure
22. According to the passage, we can learn that________ .
A. Purdy’s father donated a kidney to her
B. Purdy’s former job was a snowboard athlete
C. Purdy made her snowboarding feet with her friends’ help
D. Purdy’s team snowboarding succeeded when they applied for the first time
23. Which of the following words can best describe Amy Purdy?
A. Smart and mature.
B. Selfless and patient.
C. Determined and optimistic.
D. Creative and modest.

At Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals (笔友)exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand — an activity that’s becoming less and less common.
Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates (协调) the scheme at Jenner Park, says: “All of our writing is for a purpose. That’s the key in getting children to value handwriting. “As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to be reading it — whether that’s parents or another group of children — there’s always the real sense of
pride to go along with it,” says Johnson.
The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they’ ve reached a certain standard. “There s a lot of excitement about reaching that pen licence stage,”says’Johnson.
Johnson adds that developing students’ writing in this way matters for their life after school:“For us, it’s important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life :skills that can make them successful.”The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place.“Obviously we’re competing with technology continuously.” she says.“And I know there are people there saying you don’t need to bother about handwriting because tech is out: there. But we don’t see it as competing. We re trying to get pupils to realize that there' a place for a handwriting, and to know when it’s important to use each.”
24. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the school?
A. Its after-class activities.
B. Its practice in handwriting.
C. Its academic achievements.
D. Its innovation in technology.
25. What can we infer from the last paragraph about handwriting?
A. It will win against technology.
B. It will give way to technology.
C. It will co-exist with technology.
D. It will cause confusion to people.
26. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Handwriting promotes the pen pal scheme
B. Slow communication reduces misunderstanding
C. Creative ideas for dealing with challenges gain popularity
D. Putting pen to paper contributes to a love of the written word
C
I confess I hesitated when the editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine told me in late 2014 that I would be editing a new front-of-book column called Letter of Recommendation, about stuff people really like. The column was the brainchild of our staff writer, Sam Anderson, he explained. Sam figured that there was no shortage of places to find out what writers hate but few spaces for writers to talk about what they love. We would push against this trend, 900 words a week, 40-something times per year.
The reason for my hesitation was a simple, unfortunate fact about writing. Writing about things you hate is easy: not just fun, but generative. The criticism tends to entertain, even if you disagree, but the ode doesn't. The writerly tone is well-suited to our age, but it's hard not to see it as a collective defense mechanism—as if revealing your true feelings exposes your unmentionable secrets to the public. Obsessions(喜欢), meanwhile, are inseparable from our peculiarities as people—we come to love things for often weird reasons. When the column really works, it's as revealing about the author as it is its subject. One writer, a man in his late 30s, for example, recommended Pedialyte, which he drinks to balance the effects of both drinking and exercise, and to cheat his way back to youth.
I probably see somewhere between three and five Letter of Recommendation pitches a day. It's a great spot for trying out new writers in the magazine, so I try my best to keep up with all the email, but I often fail.(I feel genuinely terrible about this every day of my life.)Determining which to assign involves seeing how it meets the various criteria we've settled on over the years. We don't like the column to be timely—everything else in the world is timely. But on the other hand, we need to put a headline on the thing that people might reasonably recognize, stop and read about. There should be a personal angle to the recommendation, but also some universally recommendable aspect. But then again, it shouldn't be too recommendable; this isn't a column for lifehacks. The recommendation itself should be attractively unexpected—"sideways," as editors are perhaps too fond of saying—but really, it's just an excuse to cut brilliant writers loose to amuse or inspire us. 27. Sam Anderson proposed a column called Letter of Recommendation because he found ________.
A. the fashion trend was not easy to push against
B. there was a shortage of good quality columns
C. writers could hardly find a place to share their likes
D. his brainchild could sometimes increase readership
28. The word "ode"(in paragraph 2)is closest in meaning to ________.
A. praise
B. blame
C. hesitation
D. determination
29. Why is the writer in his late 30s mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To give an example of the writerly tone.
B. To highlight the way that the column selects writers.
C. To show how a collective defense mechanism works.
D. To illustrate how writers reveal themselves in the column.
30. The writer hopes that in the column, ________.
A. the recommended items are quite familiar to readers
B. the recommended items should follow the latest trend
C. readers can learn about life skills from the recommendations
D. readers will find the recommendations beyond their expectation

Isabel sat carefully inserting papers into a folder. She had been at the Gateway Nature Center's office all morning and was weary of filing. She wanted desperately to work with the animals, especially the birds in the center. But her mom, who was the assistant director of the center, said Isabel was too young.
"I've been a weekend volunteer this whole school year. I know more about birds than almost anyone else here," she said to herself, recalling as evidence the extensive research she had done reading books and web sites on natural history. Then she sighed. She had never been good at speaking up for herself.
Suddenly, the quiet was shattered by Amy Jensen bursting in and letting the door slam. Isabel felt herself shrink. Amy, who had been a volunteer a bit longer than Isabel, walked around as if she were in charge of the place. "Hey, Isabel." she barked, planting a hand on Isabel's shoulder. Isabel willed herself to remain still, though she would have loved to brush Amy's hand off
Just then, Isabel's mother rushed into the room with Mr. Garza, the custodian (管理员).
"The hurricane is entering the Gulf," she reported. "The Gulf Shore Preserve needs help preparing for the storm. I've got to go down there. You should be okay up here, but I need you girls to help Mr. Garza get the storm shutters down in the aviary (鸟舍). Stay inside with Mr. Garza after you get the storm shutters down." Isabel leaped to her feet, excited to have an opportunity to help the birds.
Mr. Garza and the girls worked quickly and were soon back inside, listening to the wind batter and rattle the shutters. When Mr. Garza found an emergency weather report on the computer, a concerned expression crossed his face. "A storm is heading our way," he announced. Amy's eyes widened in horror.
