教材分析
该板块以“通过历史了解一个国家（的概况）”（Learn about a country through history）为活动主题，引导学生通过阅读英国历史的简单发展进程，了解英国地理、社会及文化概况深入思考历史与社会文化之间的关系。

了解文化对英语学习能起到促进作用。

语篇的主题是“What’s in a Name?”，从人们对英国为何有很多不同的名称这个困惑入手，用浅显的语言描述了“大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国”漫长而复杂的形成过程，引导学生关注并思考英国社会文化的各方面情况，拓展文化视野，培养学生的批判性思维和创造性思维。

教学目标
1. 能正确理解使用下列词汇：kingdom, chief, nearby, military, defence, legal, surround, evidence, achievement, location, battle, port, charge, announce, amount, gallery, approach, ensure, landscape, generous, butter, honey, ancestor, position, 短语：join…to…, break away from sb\sth, belong to, as well as, keep your eyes open。

2. 引导学生在语境中理解和学习文本中出现的新词汇。

3. 阅读科普类文章，理解其文体特征及语言特点，获取有效信息。

4. 引导学生掌握看地图的要领，让学生理解学习历史对了解一个国家社会文化的意义。

5. 能根据提示自己组织语言表达英国的社会文化概况。

6. 学习和了解英国社会生活，开阔文化视野。

引导学生掌握看地图的要领，让学生理解学校历史对了解一个国家社会文化概况的意义，并能自己组织语言表达出来，在语境中理解和学习文本中出现的新词汇。

【教学难点】
掌握运用看地图快速获取文本信息的阅读策略。

教学过程
Step 1 Warming-up
Watch a short video about the United Kingdom facts.
设计意图：用视频直观而直接地介绍本课话题，引起学生兴趣的同时，为下面的阅读活动准备铺垫。

Step 2 Pre-reading
Discuss the following questions in groups:
1. What does it show?
2. What do the different symbols and colors stand for?
设计意图：引导学生通过观察地图来获取直观性知识，引起学生阅读兴趣。

Step 3 While-reading
1. Students read the text quickly to find the main idea of the passage. Teacher introduces the reading strategy of skimming.
2. Read the text and match the main idea of each part.
3. Read the text again and answer the questions.
4.Read the text and complete the outline according to the text. Discuss and share the two chief advantages of studying the history of a country in groups.
设计意图：通过各种阅读理解活动，引起学生的阅读兴趣。

不同类型的活动设计既帮助学生强化文章细节的理解，又能培养学生抓住时间线索理解文章结构的能力。

Step 4 Post-reading
1. Retell the passage according to the given information.
2. Complete the conversation about the UK using the phrases in their correct forms.
设计意图：通过复述环节加深对阅读内容的理解并夯实语言基础知识，并通过学习词组理解文章用词特点。

Step 5 Assignment
Discuss the questions in groups and share your ideas in class tomorrow.
1. Why is it important to study the history and culture of a country before visiting it?
2. What important things should visitors know about before they come to China?
设计意图：全面巩固和复习本课所学内容，通过讨论深刻认识文化对英语学习起到促进作用。
