Have you ever heard your own voice? “Of course, ” you say.
Has anyone else ever heard your voice? Again you say, “Of course.”
But that’s n ot quite true. Nobody else has ever heard your voice—the way you hear it. When you talk, you set up sound waves. The air outside your head carries the sound waves to your outer ears. But, of course, the sound of your voice begins inside your head. The bones of your head pick up the sound waves, too. They carry the sound waves straight to your inner ears.
You get the sound from the outside and the inside too. Other people get just the sound waves from the outside. That is why they don’t hear your voice the way you do.
76、You hear your voice the same way others hear it.
A.can’t B.seldom C.sometimes D.always
77、Sound travels in the form of .
A.bones B.air C.waves D.voice

Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person’s gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up(打量)and to assure them that you mean no threat, since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction. You need to send a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman(1963)calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.
If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They typically gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you”, “I am interested in you”, or “You look peculiar(奇怪的)and I am curious about you.” This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.
81、It can be inferred from the first paragraph that .
A.every glance has its meaning
B.staring at a person is an expression of interest
C.a gaze longer than 3 seconds in unacceptable
D.a glance expresses more meaning than words
82、By “a dimming of the lights”(Para. 1)Erving Goffman means .
A.closing one’s eyes B.turning off the lights
C.stopping glancing at others D.reducing gaze-time properly
83、How long should a gaze last if a man wants to show love for a woman?
A.All the time. B.For at most 2 seconds.
C.For 3 seconds. D.It all depends.
84、If one is looked at by a stranger for too long, he tends to feel .
A.unhappy B.uneasy C.curious D.amused
85、The passage mainly discusses .
A.the limitations of eye contact
B.the exchange of ideas through eye contact
C.proper behavior in some situations
D.the role of eye contact in communication
D
If You see someone drowning, speed is very important. Once you get him out of water, if he is not breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely destroyed. Support his neck, tilt (<使>倾斜)his head and press his chin(下巴)upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and this is sometimes to get him to breathe again. If that does not work, start mouth-to-mouth breathing. Press his nose holes together with your fingers. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs(肺)until his chest rises, then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat twelve times a minutes. Keep doing until help arrives.
To bring a child back to life, keep your lip around his mouth and nose and gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible to full the blood with oxygen. If, in spite of your efforts, he starts turning a blue-gray color, you can feel no pulse, the pressing is the last chance of saving his life.
With arms straight, rock forwards, pressing down on the lower half of the breastbone. Don’t be too hard or you may break a rib(肋骨). Check how effective you are doing. If his color improves and his pulse happens, stop the pressing. Otherwise continue until rescue arrives.
86、This passage is mainly about .
A.how to save people out of water
B.how to give first aid to people who are drowning
C.how to do mouth-to-mouth breathing
D.how to save a child from a river
87、Once you get a drowning man out of the water, if he is not breathing, you must .

B.take him to the nearest hospital as soon as possible
C.find someone to help you

88、In the last passage, the word “rescue” means.
A.breath B.help C.doctor D.pulse
89、If the drowning boy has no pulse, .
A.pressing his chin upwards is enough to get him breathing
B.blowing air into his mouth is sure to save his life
C.pressing his nose holes together with your fingers can work
D.pressing is the last chance of saving his life

Text 10
As we all know, Mother’s Day is a holiday for mothers. It is celebrated in the USA, England
and some other countries. In a short time, it has become a festival in many other c ountries. Mother’s Day comes on the second Sunday in May. On that day, many people send presents of love to their beloved mothers. Those whose mothers are still living often wear a pink or red rose or carnation, while those whose mothers are dead wear a white one.
The idea of a day for mothers was first given by Miss Anna Janis of Philadelphia. As a result of her hard work, the first American Mother’s Day was held in Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. Soon the holiday became popular all over the country and around the world. In China, many people do the same on the day for mothers now. And some people choose a song over a radio for his or her mother. This might cost a little money, but as it is said, “Love is invaluable.”。
