阅读以下短文,从每题所给的四个选项〔A、B、C和D〕中,选出最正确选项,并在答题卡上
将该项涂黑。
〔共20小题;每题2分,总分值40分〕
A
Has anyone noticed how, with the passage of time, one’s relationship with one’s grown-up daughters and sons becomes changed? I’ve been aware of this for some time but I’m not quite sure how to deal with it.
Take the kitchen sink for example.
Following a family get-together at my place, I walked into the kitchen to find Kate, my daughter, carefully cleaning the sink.
“Don’t do that; what are you doing that for?〞 I said, unhappy about the hidden criticism.
“Mum,〞she said, “you really ought to put your glasses on when you clean the sink. Behind the tap here was black!〞
But it’s not just things like kitchen sinks. Another time Kate arrived to pick me up to lunch. She looked at me and then asked, “Mum, why do you use brown eyebrow pencil when your hair is grey?〞
A sudden memory of her, aged 14, going to her first mixed party flooded back. She had come in to say goodbye. For a moment I thought she’d been an accident. Both eyes were black. I remember suggesting that perhaps a little less eye make-up might be more effective.
Now I told her, “My hair used to be brown.〞
“It looks absurd.〞
“Mrs. Menzies had dark eyebrows with grey hair.〞
“Yes, but you’re not Mrs. Menzies, are you?〞 she said triumphantly, as if that proved her point.
But a recent event made me realize that something really must be done.
She had returned home for a few weeks before getting married. One evening I went out on a dinner date. By the time my companion left me at the front door, it was about 2am. As I stepped in, an angry figure in a white nightgown stopped me.
“Well, what time of night is this to be coming home?〞she shouted. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!〞
Shades of the past come back to disturb me. But what should I do about all this? Nothing, pro bably. Maybe, after all, it’s only a stage young people are going through. 41.The daughter thought her mother didn’t clean the kitchen sink well because of her .
A.laziness B.carelessness C.unhappiness D.poor-quality glasses
42.From the passage we know the daughter .
A.didn’t want to help with the sink
B.didn’t like brown eyebrow pencils
C.had an accident when she went to her first party
D.shouted at her mum because she came home late
43.How does the mother feel after all these have happened?
A.Shocked. B.Proud. C.Envious. D.Confused.
44.The author writes the stories to prove that .
A.their relationship became stronger
B.their roles changed as time passed
C.her daughter very much cared about her
D.her daughter got upset as she grew up

Illinois---Wildlife officials discovered a single Asian carp(鲤鱼) Thursday in a canal leading to Lake Michigan, which indicated the destructive species might come to the Great Lakes, Illinois environmental officials said. Environmentalists fear that if the Asian carp reached the lakes they could starve out native fish species and put a $7 billion-a-year fishing industry at stake.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials found the only 22-inch young carp among tens of thousands of dead fish in a fish kill operation in the canal, about 40 miles from Lake Michigan. “Asian carps are indeed knocking on the door of the Great Lakes. This is the closest to Lake Michigan that an actual Asian carp body has been found,〞said John Rogner, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Tens of thousands of other species of fish, from gizzard shad to drum, floated to the surface of the waterway Thursday after authorities dumped more than 2, 000 gallons of toxins(毒素) into a nearly six-mile stretch of the waterway the evening before.
The toxins were dumped while an electrical barrier normally used to prevent any Asian carp from the Great Lakes was turned off for maintenance. The kill operation which will require the removal of an estimated 200, 000 pounds of dead fish to a landfill(废弃物填埋场) began Wednesday and was expected to last until Saturday.
The Asian carp which can grow to 4 feet were imported by Southern fish farms but
escaped into the Mississippi River in large numbers during flooding in the 1990s and have been making their way northward ever since.
Concern about the species of Asian carp led to calls even before Thursday to close the waterway connecting the lakes to the Mississippi-an unprecedented(空前) step that could disrupt the movement of millions of tons of coal, grain and other goods.
49. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

50. Why is the fish kill operation carried out?
A. Because Asian carps might endanger American’s fishing industry.
B. Because about 200, 000 pounds of fish are poisoned.
C. Because Asian carps escape into the Mississippi River.
D. Because native fish species are starving out.
51. What will happen if the waterway is closed?
A. All the native fish in the river would be killed.
B. The transportation of coal, grain and other goods may be affected.
C. An electrical barrier had to be turned off.
D. Not a single Asian carp would survive in the Great Lakes.
52. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Asian Carp in the Great Lakes.
B. Nationwide Fish Kill Operation.
C. Fishing Industry in the USA.
D. Asian Carp Found Near Lake Michigan.

One of the world’s great natural wonders is in New Mexico, in the American Southwest. Nature has created huge moving hills of pure white sand. These sand dunes cover more than seventy-thousand hectares of desert.
It is one of the largest sand dune fields in the United States. The bright white sand dunes are always changing, always moving, like waves on the ocean. Driven by strong winds, the sand moves and covers everything in its path. It is like a huge sea of sand.
You may wonder how anything can live in this extreme environment of a white sand desert. There is not much rain. The heat in summer is intense. The sand lacks nutrients. Plants and animals struggle to survive. A few kinds of plants grow quickly to survive burial by the moving sand dunes. Several kinds of small animals have become white in color in order to hide in the sand.
More than five hundred thousand people visit White Sands each year. They climb on the dunes and observe the moving sea of sand.
White Sands is about twenty four kilometers southeast of the city of Alamogordo, New Macico. In the visitor center at the entrance of the park, you can find out about special activities and guided walks. You can drive about thirteen kilometers into the center of the dunes. It is like driving on a lonely white planet. Along the way there is information that tells about the natural history of the white sands.
You can also explore the dunes on foot, seeing some unusual and beautiful plants
and flowers. Signs along the trail tell about the plants growing in the sand. You can even camp there overnight. But you must be careful. It is easy to get lost in the waves of moving sand especially during sandstorms. There is no water to drink. The temperature can rise to thirty-eight degrees Celsius in summer. There is no shelter from the sun’s rays.
White Sands is part of America’s National Parks System, and it is just one of the unusual examples of America’s natural and cultural treasures.
53. Which of the followings plays a major role in making for this extreme environment?
A. Plants and animals.
B. Strong winds.

D. Many people.
54. Walking on dunes, people will______.
A. enjoy the beautiful sight of sand moving
B. see many kinds of white plants and animals
C. find out about special activities
D. get lost easily and quickly especially during storms
55. What do we know about White Sands from this passage?
A. It is one of the largest sand dune fields in the world.
B. You can get to know its natural history while driving in it.

D. You are not allowed to camp here overnight.
56. What is the main purpose of the passage?

US college students are burdened with credit card debt, according to a study published Tuesday, and the problem can be serious--ranging from more drop-outs, to future employment problems and even self-murder. The study, by Georgetown University sociologist Robert Manning, blamed credit card issuers for actively targeting students and colleges for allowing them to do so. “The unrestricted selling of credit cards in universities or colleges is so aggressive that it now forms a greater threat than alcohol or sexual diseases,〞Manning told a news conference in Washington. “If we do not quickly deal with this serious problem, the matter will continue to get worse, with social consequences far more tragic than mere dollars and cents.〞Based on hundreds of face-to-face interviews and surveys with students, Manning concluded both the number with credit card debt and their indebtedness had been “underreported〞in previous studies--which failed to reflect the “survival strategies〞 many used to deal with their debts. These included the use of federal student loans to pay off credit cards, effectively shifting the debt, appealing to parents for loans, reducing course work hours to increase time at paid jobs, or even dropping out altogether to work full time.
“Official drop-out rates include growing numbers of students who are unable to cope with the stress of their debts and/or part-time jobs for servicing(支付利息)
their credit cards,〞the study said. “Students credit card debts are examined during the employment process and may be an important factor in evaluating future employees,〞 it noted. Manning agreed that students should bear some responsibility for reckless use of credit, but said credit card companies also had to be responsible for making it so easy for them to get into debt. Manning said one of the most troublesome aspects of the student credit card issue was “the seduction of college and university officials by the credit card industry〞.
57. Sociologist Robert Manning’s study shows that _________________.
A. the number of American college students using credit cards on campus is increasing
B. more and more American college students meet with credit card debt problems

写作: Those who are in favor of the policy hold the view that newsstands are out of date and they are making cities look untidy. Besides, they are always located by the road , which has a negative influence on traffic.
However, many more people are opposed to the practice. For one thing,it is convenient for people to get newspapers and magazines from the nearby stands. If there are no newsstands left, they may have to walk a long way to get what they need to read. For another ,many owners of the newsstands are laid-off workers. If they lose the stands, they will not be able to support their families.
In my opinion, it isn’t right to close them down. If some stands are old and shabby, we can have them replaced so that they don’t affect the beauty of the city. For those that affect the traffic, we can put them in a more proper place.。
