Unit 8 PlaytimeHonorable judges, my dear fellow teachers,Good morning! It’s a great honor for me to present my thinking of giving a lesson here. What I am going to present today is Unit 8 Playtime Part B from Primary English for China Book 5. I will try to make my presentation understandable by airing my thoughts and opinions on the function and status of the teaching material, the setting of the teaching aims, the selection of the teaching and learning methods and the teaching procedures.1. Analysis of the teaching material(1) Status and functionThe theme of this unit is playtime. It aims at enabling the pupils to ask about and tell the time (What time is it? It’s…), and use the continuous tense to describe activities that are in process (What’s…doing? He/She is playing…). Compare with the previous six units (excluding Unit 5, which is a revision), this unit is crucial, because the previous units are talking about concrete things, for instance, places near your home, your favorite things, and this unit is dealing with abstract concept, time. Therefore it deserves more attention from the teacher. Obviously, this unit is designed to develop the pupils’abstract thinking, helping them to complete the transition from image thinking to abstract thinking. Activities that are cater for the pupils’ receptivity, ability and thinking should be adopted to help them comprehend the concept and acquire expressions of telling the time.(2) Teaching aims:According to the English language teaching syllabus, the students should boost their interest in English and acquire basic English knowledge and elementary communication ability through training of listening, speaking, reading and writing, paving the road for further study. Besides, the syllabus states that, at the present stage, education for all-around development consists of ideology education, target language quality education, potential foreign language competence cultivation and the development of nonintellectual factor.Based on the analysis of the status and function of the teaching material and the requirement of the English language teaching syllabus, four targets from different aspects are presented as follows:A. Knowledge aim:The pupils have good mastery over the following sentence structures:What time is it?It’…o’clock.What’s…doing?She/He’s playing…B. Ability aim:The pupils are able to apply the language structures in the situations created by the teacher, based on which they are capable of using them in daily life.C. Emotion aim:Enha nce the pupils’ interest in English and help them to build up their confidence of learning English well. Also, the lesson aims at providing the pupils with fun and joy while learning English.D. Moral aim:Help the pupils to cultivate a good concept of treasuring time, keeping fit and loving our country and our lives.(3) Main point and Difficult point:Main point:master the expressions of telling the time and sentence structures of describing the activities that are in process.Difficult point: apply continuous tense2. Disposal of the teaching materialBased on the above analysis of the teaching material and the fact that Chinese students have some general problems with English learning, I will try to create a carefree atmosphere for the pupils: Firstly, I will revise the numbers from 1 to 12 with the pupils to build up their confidence and prepare for the learning of telling the time as well. Then, I will play two guessing games “What time is it?”with the pupils after teaching them how to ask about and tell the time. Afterwards, I will introduce the five friendlies to the pupils and revise the continuous tense by describing what sports they are doing. Finally, I will introduce Beijing Olympic Games to the pupils and encourage them to do body exercise as often as possible to keep fit and study hard to prepare themselves for making contribution to the country. Also, the introduction of Beijing Olympic Games aims at arousing the pupils’ patriotism and guiding them to be proud of our country.3. Teaching methodology and learning methodTask-based language teaching method and Communicative language teaching method will be applied to to stimulate the pupils’ interest in English, to create authentic situations and design operable and practicable tasks for the pupils to acquire the language and prompt them to use the language in real communication through drilling and practice of listening, speaking, playing, acting and singing. The teaching contents are arranged in this way: from simplicity to complicated, from easy to difficult. The pupils are guided to apply what they learn in the class in their daily communication through the drilling and interaction between the teacher and the pupils.4. Teaching proceduresStep one: Warm upI have two activities for the pupils to warm up. Firstly, I will ask them to sing a song “Ten Little Indians”. Though the song is new, the rhythm of the song is familiar to the pupils, and it attracts their attention and helps the pupils to revise the numbers from one to ten.Another warming up activity is the Little Doctor, which is a class routine. It is also a favorite warming up activity for the pupils to practice the sentence structures they learned in previous classes.Step two: Lead inThe activity I design for introducing my lesson is “Doctor Q”. After the Little Doctor, I will tell the pupils that I am Doctor Q, and I will challenge them with some tough questions. This would arouse their interest, and the desire to take the challenge. By doing this, I can not only practice some previously learned sentence structures with the pupils, I can also introduce my new lesson naturally: “Is there a clock in our classroom?”“Yes, there is.”“Look! Mr. Lin has a clock too.”(“No, there isn’t.”“That’s right! There isn’t a clock in our classroom. But look at my hands! Mr. Lin has a clock.”) Then I will say the word “clock” for the pupils to imitate. When they are able to say the word clearly and correctly, I will revise the numbers from 1 to 12 quickly with the pupils: What number is this?Step three: PresentationSo far, I have successfully paved the road for the presentation of the new points that the pupils are about to learn.Then I will move the hands of the model clock to one o’clock and say “one o’clock” and write it down on the blackboard, encourage the pupils to say after me. Then repeat with two o’clock, three o’clock… When the pupils know how to tell the time, ask “What time is it?”Repeat by moving the hands to different time. Encourage the pupils to answer: “It’s five o’clock.”Step four: PracticeThree games: Time Genius and two Guessing games are designed to help the pupils practice and consolidate the sentence structures. In these three games, the pupils become the centre of the class and the teacher an organizer and a guider. The rules are deliberately made to set up information gap and create authentic communication situations to provide the pupils with ample opportunities to practice what they have just learned in this class, preparing themselves for the real communication in daily life. The games also help to create a lively and active classroom atmosphere as well.Step five: Moral EducationThe games is the first climax, the introduction of the five mascots of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games would push the class to another climax. This would be a great help to integrate the new knowledge of this lesson with the knowledge learned in the previous class. There are three purposes of introducing the mascots: firstly, revise continuous tense that learned in the previous class; secondly, ease and relax the pupils; thirdly, introduce Beijing Olympic Games to the pupils, encourage them to keep fit and learn English hard so that they may make their contribution to the gameand to the country. This is also the main part of the moral education, which appeals to the requirements of the new curriculum criteria.Step five: Homework1 Read and listen to Part B for three times.2 Use the four sentences to make some dialogues.3 Recite three new words.4 Be a little English teacher.5 Make a time table for sports day.Board designing:。
