Abstract
Lexical items are the building block of a language. The study of the English new words' appearance has always been a hot issue for linguists. Since the end of Word War II, along with the change of times, the development of science and technology, and the progress in ideology, there have appeared a large number of new words and new meanings in the English vocabulary. This paper mainly discusses the causes and formation of English new words. The study shows that the addition of new words is influenced by many factors, such as the development of science and technology, social and political changes, health and fitness, environment and sports. This paper further discuss that the English new words can be formed through coining, clipping, blending, acronymy, back-formation, functional shift, borrowing and compounding. The present article has promising implications for English new words study. Key words: English, new word, causes, formation
Chapter One Introduction
New English words has been rushing into the language at a unparalleled speed. As the word is the basic part of the language, the study of the new English words is very crucial. There are many scholars who have already made significant contributions to this study. In the book A New Concise Course in Linguistics for Students of English(Dai, He.2010), the author analyses the nature and the causes of the language change from five different linguistic levels such as in the phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon and semantic components of the grammar. Scholar Wang has also written several articles to discuss the new English words. He also makes a systematic study of the trend, the cause, and the ways of formation of the new English words. He mentions that only when we are acquainted with the new development of new English words can we learn English well.This paper will focus on the research of the causes and ways of forming the new English words. Chapter one is the introduction of this article; chapter two discusses the causes of new English words; chapter three mainly illustrates eight ways of forming the new English words; a general conclusion is given in chapter four.
