The operation of L/C usually goes through the following steps, namely, establishment, amendment, and settlement. The following are three diagrams to illustrate this procedure.
UCP600
Rules for the operation of L/C are stipulated in UCP (Uniform Customs and Practices For Documentary Credits 《跟单信用证统一惯例》). UCP has already been updated to UCP600 in 2007. Compared to UCP500 (1993 revision), UCP600 is more applicable. For example: UCP600 cancels some unpractical articles such as revocable L/C; it shortens the time for banks to check the L/C from 7 days to 5 days; it also adds two choices for banks to handle documents with discrepancies in order to protect the interest of beneficiaries.
