Every year, thousands of tourists come to admire Stonehenge's beauty and to wonder about how and why it was built.Stonehenge was produced by a culture that left no written records. Though there are many guesses, it is still a mystery why stone-age man moved such heavy stones over 380 kilometers from where they were made.At that time, people had only basic wooden tools. To move the stones they probably used tree trunks (树干) to roll them along. Some historians believe that Stonehenge was a temple, the site of ancient sacrifice(祭祀). Others believe it was perhaps a giant sundial (日冕) to tell the time. Stonehenge could have been a burial ground(墓地) from its earliest beginnings, because human bone dating from as early as 3000 BC was found there. Whatever its ancient use was, the stones have always been a source of fascination for British people. One record from 1135 said the great stones were carried to England by giant magical creatures! In modern times Stonehenge has become a huge hit with tourists. When Stonehenge was first opened to the public it was possible to walk among and even climb on the stones, but the stones were circled with ropes in 1977 as a result of serious erosion(侵蚀). Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age. But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases, joint problems and behavior changes. Sometimes, they even become infertile. To learn more about how captivity affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with those living outdoors in their native habitats. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care, documenting factors such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyze 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe, North America and Asia. The scientists found that female elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9years. Their wild counterparts who died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years - more than three times as long.Scientists don't yet know why wild elephants seem to fare so much better than their zoo - raised counterparts. Georgia Mason, a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study, thinks that stress and obesity may be to blame. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.A teenage boy with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing and angering people on the alreadytense flight.“If it was a cartoon,〞remembered Watson, “there would have been smoke coming out of people’s ears.〞The boy’s el derly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain.Watson, who used to be a teacher, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane. She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him.Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand, and then together they got properly back into airplane seats. Watson asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay a nd that they’d get through it together. After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect. Instead, calmed passengers—obviously following Watson’s amazing example—allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their homework and essays are typed on a computer. All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being used more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.〞“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.〞Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite? Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both p ractical and aesthetic (审美的)value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only keep their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s feelings. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.〞To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory〔必修的〕and in universities, some professors areasking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.9.The underlined expression “taking stock in〞 in paragraph 4 probably means.A. becoming crazy aboutB. getting bored withC. getting dependent onD. getting curious about10.The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because ___________.A. computers have become a trend and fashion in ChinaB. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essaysC. they find it not easy to remember how to write a characterD. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently 11.Which of the following statement is NOT true of the advantage of handwriting?A. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters.DThe loud noise of the cars or the sound of a plane can force its way into the deepest forest, yet it’s not only humans that are bothered by the noise.Bioacoustician Bernie Krause has been studying the effect of noise pollution on wildlife, and has come across some interesting behaviors, especially among animals that communicate by sound, like humans. Birds use sound to communicate, but in noisy places, these animals have to shout over the natural noise to be heard.Krause mentions a study of nightingales(夜莺) to explain what he means. The birds responded to〔回应〕 traffic noise by singing louder and louder until they actually went beyond noise pollution standards in the city. To belt out (sing loudly) their songs, they increased their lung pressure fivefold, but scientists say that this is not dangerous for the birds themselves.Studies show that sudden noise can cause certain birds to leave their nests, leaving the young to their enemies. One study also showed that songbirds that nested close to busy motorways were much less productive than those that nested farther away. Mammals〔哺乳动物〕too are affected(影响). A recent study showed that nursing caribou 〔驯鹿〕 responded to plane noise by not producing enough milk to feed their young. In some cases noise pollution can actually help some animals while harming others. Toads〔蟾蜍〕and frogs are known to sing in union〔同步发声〕so that no predator (their enemies) can catch them. Krause found that when planes flew overhead and disturbed the toad’s song, they lost their union, and it took them 45 minutes to get it back again. That gave their natural enemies plenty of time to find and catch individual toads by sound.According to Kruse, “Not only will noise pollution bother wildlife, but it won’t help our lives either.〞13. How do young caribou suffer from aircraft noise?A. .They can’t hear their mothers.B. They can’t sleep at night.C. They are often displaced.D. They receive less food.14. Here is some advice on how to make your once-in-a-lifetime journey and how to stay safe when you get there. Before you begin to look at places, activities and plane tickets, you must set a budget. When you search through the websites about travelling, it can be so easy to add another week here or there, or choose an extra activity. Setting a budget can avoid(避免)creating a huge bill, which starts very small. With so many countries on this planet, it is difficult to decide where to go. By narrowing down your search to voluntary work or a relaxing holiday, you can save a lot of time looking through websites. After deciding where to go, you need to research the country. Find out when each season is. It would be disappointing if you were taking part in an outdoor-based activity and it rained most days. Look into medical information, as you may need certain medicine for certain countries. Above all, make sure you can afford to go to this country and take part in the activities you have dreamt about. Don’t raise your hopes too high before you know for certain it is within your budget.By carrying a credit card with you at all times, it is possible to stop yourself getting lost. Mobile phones are very important as well. However, do not depend completely on them, since electronic machines can break without warning. Henry. From 1893 he lived with his family in a house in Austin, Texas, which is now a museum. Visitors to Austin can see the house. It was saved from destruction and turned into a museum in1934. The museum is a good way tolearn about the interesting life of the American writer.William Porter rented this house in Austin and lived there with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum came from the Porters. Others did not. An important piece in the room is the original photo over here. It was taken there in the house about 1895. The piano there goes back to the 1860s. His wife took lessons on it when she first moved to Austin.Porter wasn’t a successful wr iter in the beginning. He worked at a farm, land office and bank. He also loved words and writing. The museum has a special proof of Porter’s love of language --- his dictionary. It is said that he had read every word in that dictionary.Later William Porter was forced to leave Austin because he was charged with wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job. Because he was afraid of a trial , he left the country secretly. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced the trial and served three and a half years in a prison in Ohio.William Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it.
