She passed away five years ago at the age of 65, but the impact she has left on the world of architecture is profound.Hadid was born into an upper-class Iraqi family in 1950. At the very beginning, she wanted to become a mathematician and studied science at the American University of Beirut, But at some point she realized that she preferred shapes to numbers. And she turned her concentration to architecture and went to London where she met the famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.“There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Hadid once said. Despite her abundance of amazing ideas, before the beginning of the 90s, not a single building based on her blueprints had been built. Her highly expressive style, while initially criticized and believed to be crazy, is now regarded as pioneering work. Her striking contemporary architecture, inspired by natural landforms, has graced the skylines of major metropolitan cities.“Women are always being told, ‘you’re not going to make it; It’s too difficult. Her project for the London Olympics Aquatic Center won her the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She became the first woman and first Muslim to earn the award, making a name for herself and paving the way for female architects. Hadid’s genius lives on in the array of many other spectacular build ings she has left behind in the world. Among them are the Guangzhou Opera House, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, as well as the Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar where the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held.Hadid may be gone, but her global influence on a new generation of female architects is here to stay.4. You’ve just eaten something spicy, knowing it would be painful, but you chose to do it anyway. Are humans just masochistic (自讨苦吃的), or is there something else going on? 16Spicy isn’t actually a taste like salty, sweet, sour and bitten —it’s a sens ation. 17 . When we eat foods containing capsaicin (辣椒素), our bodies are tricked into thinking the temperature is actually rising. In trying to relieve the burning sensation, our bodies release endorphins (内啡肽) which control pain and, at the same time, give a feeling of pleasure — like painkillers. This is what is happening chemically, but there is also a conscious side to choosing spicy food. Dr Tamara Rosenbaum, a Cognitive Neuroscientist, explains in an interview with the BBC that this is 18 . Furthermore, we obtain pleasure from the other ingredients chilli is generally cooked and eaten with—including fat, sugar and salt. So — like skydiving — eating chilli is a form of thrill-seeking, 19Humans, one of the few mammals on Earth that developed a taste for capsaicin, started cultivating chilli peppers about six thousand years ago. Human intervention changed the chilli pepper to suit human tastes and needs —including the pepper’s colour, size and capsaicin content-helping toexplain the many different types of chilli peppers now available. 20 . We eat around 57.3 million tons of peppers globally each year, and chilli is a key ingredient in traditional dishes from Mexico to Korea. When the bell rang on the last day of school, Susanna cheered along with her classmates. In his lifetime, he not only proved that bacteria are the cause of diseases, but also discovered the process of vaccination (接种疫苗) which has saved billions of lives. When Pasteur worked with chickens that were suffering from cholera(霍乱) during his experiments, he accidentally spread cholera to his chickens. Pasteur’s chickens became mildly sick but did not die. This was strange as every chicken that came near cholera earlier had died. He realized soon that the cholera had become weak. By the time he tried again, the chickens he had cured earlier did not get cholera anymore. He realized that a weak cholera helped his chickens develop an antibody against it.Later, Pasteur went on to try this on cows, pigs and dogs. All his research helped him develop different vaccines. We now know that the process of vaccination introduces a weakened kind of bacteria into our body. Our body reacts by creating antibodies to fight the bacteria. Now, when our body comes across the same bacteria which are much stronger, it can fight them off.Louis Pasteur received numerous awards for the advancement of biology, chemistry, and medicine. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world’s most uncommon giraffes. On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated (网状的) giraffe, one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother’s care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe livinganywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr. David Bright, who runs the zoo, “It will easily be a key target for poachers (偷猎者) because she’s so unusual.”Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain. This brown giraffe’s birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.12.What do we know about the spots of giraffes?A.They help protect giraffes.B.They are the same pattern.C.They look like giraffes’ footprints.D.They appear on giraffes occasionally. 13.What makes the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo special?A.Its extremely large size.B.Its light brown fur.C.Its unusual eating habit.D.Its absence of spots.14.What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5?A.Recognized.B.Endangered.C.Doubled.D.Balanced. 15.Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe?A.Awkward.B.Worrying.C.Meaningful.D.Foreseeable.二、七选五V olunteering your time to support a cause you like is something you will never regret.better understand how you fit into the world around you.17 In fact, spending time enriching your community is a great way to broaden your perceptions of the world. Her monitor has shown that air pollution levels are higher closer to ground level, which has helpedhighlight concerns that babies and young kids may be at higher risk of developing lung problems.Conventional air pollution monitors are normally fixed on lampposts (路灯柱) at about nine feet in the air. However, since Baggy stands at about the same height as a child in a pushchair (婴儿车), she frequently records pollution levels which are much higher than the data gathered by the Environment Agency. The doggy data research was the idea of Baggy’s 13-year-old owner Tom Hunt and his dad Matt. The English youngster noticed that pollution levels are around two-thirds higher close to the ground than they are in the air at the height where they are recorded by the agency. Tom has since reported the shocking findings to the government in an attempt to emphasize that babies are at higher risk of developing asthma (哮喘).Matt Hunt said he was “very proud” of his son because “when the boy gets an idea, he keeps his head down and gets on with it, and he really does want to do some good and stop young kids from getting asthma.”“Tom built up a passion for environmental protection at a very early age,” Matt added. “He became very interested in gadgets (小装置). About one year ago, he got this new piece of tech which is like a test tube. One Sunday afternoon, we went out to do somemonitoring, and he said, ‘why don’t we put it on Baggy’s collar and let her monitor the pollution ’ So we did it.”Tom said, “Most of the time, Baggy is just like any other dog. But for the rest of the time she is a super dog, and we are all really proud of her.”5.What can we learn from the Baggy dataA.High places are free of air pollution. B.Higher pushchairs are more risky for kids.C.Conventional monitors are more reliable. D.Air is more polluted closer to the ground.6.What is Tom’s purpose of doing the researchA.To warn of a health risk. B.To find out pollution sources. C.To test his new monitor. D.To prove Baggy’s abilities. 7.According to the passage, which word can best describe Tom HuntA.Modest. B.Generous. C.Creative. D.Outgoing.For people who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today’s sound professionals a re sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new products based on the phenomenon we call sound.Sound can be used as a weapon. Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries to escape. And the o fficer can’t let him get away. he pulls out a special device points it at the suspect, and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly. For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let’s say you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short commercial song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine a British invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine on, point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way spotlights(聚光灯)are used in thetheater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly, a “spotsound” creates a circle of sound in one targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.8.What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRADA.It causes temporary hearing loss B.It slows down a running man C.It makes it easy to identify a suspect D.It keeps the suspect from hurting others9.The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to ________. A.silence the people around you B.remove the sound of commercialsC.block the incoming sound waves D.stop unwanted sound from affecting you10.What feature do spotsounds and spotlights shareA.They travel in circles B.They clear the atmosphere. C.They can be transformed into energy D.They can be directed onto a specific area11.Directed sound can be used for ________.A.creative designs of restaurant menus B.ideal sound effects on the theater stageC.different choices of music for businesses D.strict control over any suspicious customerA scientist working at her lab bench and a six-old baby playing with his food might seem to have little in common. After all, the scientist is engaged in serious research to uncover the very nature of the physical world, and the baby is, well, just playing … right Perhaps, but some developmental psychologists (心理学家) have argued that this “play” is more like a scientific investigation than one might think.Take a closer look at the baby playing at the table. Each time the bowl of rice is pushed over the table edge, it falls in the ground —and, in the process, it brings out important evidence about how physical objects interact (相互作用); bowls of rice do not float in mid-air, but require support to remain stable. It is likely that babies are not born knowing the basic fact of the universe; nor are they ever clearly taught it. Instead, babies may form an understanding of object support through repeated experiments and then build on this knowledge to learn even more about how objects interact. Though their ranges and tools differ, the baby’s investigation andthe scientist’s experiment appear to share the same aim (to learn about the natural world), overall approach (gathering direct evidence from the world), and logic (are my observations what I expected ).Some psychologists suggest that young children learn about more than just the physical world in this way — that they investigate human psychology and the rules of language using similar means. For example, it may only be through repeated experiments, evidence gathering, and finally overturning a theory, that a baby will come to accept the idea that other people can have different views and desires from what he or she has, for example, unlike the child, Mommy actually doesn’t like Dove chocolate.Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and scientists. Why do young children and scientists seem to be so much alike Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort — the desire to explore, explain, and understand our world — is simply something that comes from our babyhood. Perhaps evolution (进化) provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as children. The same cognitive (认知的) systems that make young children feel goodabout figuring something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it, “It is not that children are little scientists but that scientis ts are big children.”12.According to some developmental psychologists, ________. A.a baby’s play is nothing more than a gameB.scientific research into babies’ games is possibleC.the nature of babies’ play has been thoroughly investigated D.a baby’s play is somehow similar to a scientist’s experiment 13.We learn from Paragraph 2 that ________A.scientists and babies seem to observe the world differently B.scientists and babies often interact with each other C.babies are born with the knowledge of object support D.babies seem to collect evidence just as scientists do 14.Children may learn the rules of language by ________. A.exploring the physical world B.investigating human psychology C.repeating their own experiments D.observing their parents’ behaviors15.What is the main idea of the last paragraphA.The world may be more clearly explained through children’s play. B.Studying babies’ play may lead to a better understanding of science.C.Children may have greater ability to figure out things thanscientists.D.One’s drive for scientific research may become stronger as he grows.二、七选五I experienced years of loneliness as a child. ___16___ His friends teased him about babysitting his sister and his interests were far different from mine. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows stream (流播) directly to their television at their convenience. This behavior is nothing new. In fact, binge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode. However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and 25% have neglected their household chores (家务活). Next we’ll be missing work!Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist (抗拒) watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction? The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning, then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little ofwhat you fancy does you good.”4.How did the writer develop the first paragraph?A.By giving a definition.B.By telling a story.C.By listing some examples.D.By analyzing the cause and effect. 5.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in Paragraph2?A.For convenience.B.At the same time.C.In detail.D.Free of charge.6.What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ______.A.people can’t control their feelings B.people can’t resist the temptation of Bingeing C.people have no patience to do work D.people are addicted to waiting for a new episode7.What advice did the writer give at last?A.To keep online media from stopping functioning.B.To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.C.To learn life lessons from the episodes.D.To watch episodes in a moderate way. This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds ...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it.The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works. However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.8.What can we learn about MusicLM?A.It is the first AI music tool to be launched.B.It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.C.It creates music based on simple descriptive words.D.It generates complex writings from a simple description.9.What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM?A.They can take the place of musicians.B.They have gained commercial success.C.They don't have any practical use in life.D.They are based on huge amounts of data. 10.Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model?A.Creating music with strong biases.B.Requiring too much training data.C.Being difficult for some people to use.D.Producing music works with no creativity. 11.What would be the best title for the text?A.The future of humans with AI B.A new AI tool to make musicC.Music created by some AI tools D.AI and its function in culture developmentCyber-bullying (网络欺凌) may take place in the online world, but it is no less damaging than in the real world. The Internet has become a kindness desert, a place where few flowers bloom. Bullying is pretty common. 12 According to those bullied, they’re usually seen asbeing different from the crowd. They are unique.Being bullied is a frustrating and painful experience. Online bullying can really hurt others, and it can have serious consequences. 13 Some people have even committed suicide because they were harassed (侵扰) online and didn’t think it would ever stop. Here are some valuable tips to help you address a bully and protect yourself in a safe way.Don’t blame yourself. 14 It’s only the bully’s fault, so don’t blame yourself for his or her shortcomings.Stay away from bullies. Bullies hope you interact with them so that they have an excuse to keep picking on you. When the bully starts orally attacking you, remove yourself from the situation if you can, simply by walking away.15 Try as you might to ignore the bullies when they are saying ugly things about you. Remind yourself that you are a great person and that nothing the bullies say matters.Speak out. Nobody has the right to make you feel unsafe, uncomfortable or unhappy. Find someone you can talk to, your teacher or your parent and tell them what’s going on. 16 Follow these tips and you should feel well-equipped to deal with your bullies the next time they attack.A.Keep track of bullies.B.Be sure you’re wonderful.C.Adults can offer help if they know about the problem.D.Being bullied can make you feel alone, scared, and hopeless.E.Your parents are willing to help you when recognizing your problem.F.If you are being bullied, it’s essential to know that it is never your fault.G.Studies have found that nearly one-third of all students are bullied each year.二、完形填空The caring employees at a Costco store near Cleveland, Ohio, are being honoured as heroes. Her mom allowed her to do anything she liked. I really admired Tiffany. My mom didn’t give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself.I was annoyed with her.Whenever I didn’t get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, Tiffany’s mom would give her that! I wish she were my mom. Every time, my morn would calmly say “Poor Tiffany”. I couldn’t understand her. “She shouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tiffany!” I thought. “She should be feeling sorry for me.”One day, I couldn’t help saying to Mom, “Poor Tiffany? Lucky Tiffany! However, this has not stopped the country from creating great building projects. On September 26, UAE officials announced another ambitious project — Mars Science City. Expansive deserts and miles of coastline provide plenty of options for safe rocket launches (发射). And its position on the Earth makes it especially appealing as the spin of the Earth provides an extra push, meaning less fuel is needed to get payloads into orbit. All these seem to make it possible. The Mars City Project, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, will provide a realistic model to simulate (模仿) living on the surface of Mars, the red planet. It is part of the UAE’s Mars 2117 Project to lead the global race to land humans on Mars and be the first to build a settlement there. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, says, “The UAE seeks international support to develop technologies that benefit humans, and lay the foundation of a better future for more generations to come.”Built outside Dubai, the 1.9 million square feet city is expected to cost $135 million. It will consist of several dome-shaped laboratories, similar to the ones imagined for the first Mars settlers. Scientists from around the word will be invited to conduct research to come up with methods to create food, water and energy, using techniques which can be copied onto the red planet. The living spaces, where the researchers can live for up to a year, will simulate the planet’s conditions as much as possible. The research city will also include a museum featuring famous space achievements to help educate and inspire children to undertake space exploration and discovery. To discover whether the construction method works on Mars, the museum’s walls will be 3D printed using the sand from the nearby desert. Now, if they would only add some living quarters for the general public to experience life on Mars without leaving Earth, life would be perfect. 8.What can we conclude about the United Arab Emirates?A.It is short of fine weather.B.It is a nice place for launching.C.It can provide adequate fuel supply.D.It has the greatest architects in the world.9.What will scientists do in the laboratories?A.Educate visitors on trips to Mars.B.Develop the Mars settlers’ imagination.C.Find ways to produce food, water and energy on Mars.D.Create a climate-controlled environment for future use.10.Why will the museum’s walls be 3D printed?A.To show famous space techniques.B.To make full use of the nearby desert.C.To inspire children to love exploration.D.To test building skills used by Mars settlers.11.What’s the best title for the text?A.UAE to Build Mars Science CityB.UAE’s Great Exploration of MarsC.UAE to Build First Mars SettlementD.UAE’s Scientistific Contribution to HumansWhich comes first, happiness or money? Are richer people happier? And if so, how do people get much richer? A recent study could tell you the answer. The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher incomes by the time they turned 29. Those who were happiest earned an average of 8,000 more than those who were the most depressed. The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens, no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more.Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and a job interview, chiefly because they always feel better about life.It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking.A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August, scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women. However, the same gene doesn’t appear to have the same effect on men.And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest. The big question is: if it really is true that happier kids end up being wealthier kids, is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework? The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades.Studies do show, after all, that more educationleads to betterpaid jobs, which may give us a deep thought.“These findings show that the teenagers’ happiness is important to their future success, ” one of the report’s authors writes.” But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork.”12.What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study?A.Wealth has nothing to do with happiness at all.B.Money can make people become happier.C.Happy teenagers grow up to be wealthier.D.Schoolwork can help teens achieve success.A.they are hopeful and optimistic about their lifeB.they are good at doing their schoolworkC.they are easy to communicate with othersD.they eat much more fruit and vegetables a dayA.wealthy B.generousC.happy D.upset15.What can be the best title for the text?A.The Way to Educate Kids B.The Secret of Being WealthierC.How to Achieve Your Goal D.The Source of Happiness二、七选五How to Do Well in Science ClassDoing well in science depends on developing useful study skills and learning to participate (参与) in class. 16 If you've got good study skills that you've developed in other courses, you'll be able to use many of these to do well in science.Read the required material. When your teacher requires reading from a textbook or a website, take time to read it before you come to class. If you don't have time to read it well, it's a good idea to look quickly at it so that you have an idea of what it's about. 17 Take clear and organized notes. The notes you take in class will help you know what to study between classes. 18 Instead, pay careful attention to any information your teacherstresses, which is likely to be included on tests.19 Many science classes include laboratory experiments, which are practice of techniques you've learned about in your textbook or lectures. Your teacher will expect you to show up ready to start your experiment. Read the instructions for the laboratory in advance of class.Reread your notes after class. If there's anything in your notes that confuses you, or which you feel might be wrong, check with your teacher or a classmate to ensure you have the right information. 20 This tests your understanding of the material in a way that ensures you've really grasped (理解) the meaning.A.It includes doing a good job in laboratories as well.B.Work in a group with others in class.C.Be prepared for the laboratory experiment.D.Recording a lecture will allow you to hear it again.E.It also helps you be prepared to answer questions and have discussions.F.It may help you to rewrite your notes in a better way.G.Don't try to write down everything that the teacher says.三、完形填空I’ve noticed that conversations with my children have started to turn into something Ias they’re finished, I go into mom mode.“You should...”, “You need to consider...”, “If I were you, I’d...” “Mom!”The tone is full of 24 and annoyance. When I get one of my adult kids on the phone, I become a(n) 25 on everything, which I’m obviously not. The dots indicated trees marked for destruction. After she learned the trees would be felled as part of the HS2 high-speed railway works, she called the HS2 helpline and was told there was nothing that could be done as an over-road would be built. She gets choked up remembering the moment she realized many of them were to be cut down.O’Callaghan loves that ancient line of oaks. They were planted in the 19th century. “My family and I would picnic under them,” she says, “climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are amazing and beautiful and meant so much.” One of the last photos of her mother, taken shortly before she died, was of her sitting in a swing in their branches. She noticed that on the other side of the lane, to the north, there were no ancient oaks. So she began campaigning to save the trees. With the help of her daughter, Blaize, she started a petition(请愿书), which went on to get nearly 43,000 signatures. “I saw someone passionate about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, someone not afraid of asking questions and calling out large, daunting businesses for doing the wrong thing,” says her neighbour Victoria.Buckinghamshire Council has got involved, and the felling is paused. A final decision has yet to be made about the proposed over-road. “We’re optimistic that they’ll hear our argument and take the ecology of the lane into account,” says O’Callaghan. “We want them to put in a green crossing in the gaps between trees, for the bats, and we’d like the place to become a conservation area. For the trees and the bats—this is what we are fighting for!”4.What did the yellow dots on the oaks indicate?A.These oaks would be cut down.B.The narrow lane would be widened.C.Rare bats would get protected.D.A railway station would be built. 5.Why does O’Callaghan have deep feelings of the oaks?A.Due to the oaks’ long history.B.Due to the natural beauty.C.Due to the precious memories.D.Due to the diverse wildlife.6.What kind of person is O’Callaghan?A.Creative.B.Humorous.C.Generous.D.Enthusiastic. 7.What is a direct result of O’Callaghan’s efforts?A.The ecology is being improved.B.The felling has been put off.C.The Council canceled the proposal.D.The area becomes a reserve.Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2024.One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety” — drivers’ concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers. As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes.Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions (排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.8.What does the underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 probably means?A.Aim.B.Problem.C.Result.D.Step.9.Why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars in the past?A.They were dependable.B.They were not widely promoted.C.They were expensive.D.They couldn’t travel at a high speed. 10.What is the function of Paragraph 4?A.To introduce the history of electric travel.B.To explain why the world needs more electric cars.C.To show why more people have interest in electric cars.D.To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.11.Which is the best title for this passage?A.Driving into a Cleaner Future B.History of Electric CarsC.Problems with Petrol and Diesel Cars D.Best Means of Transportation5G has the potential to disrupt a huge number of industries, including one of the world’s oldest: Farming. Next-generation 5G networks can be 100 times faster than 4G, making communication between devices and servers much quicker. 5G can also carry much more data than other networks. That makes the technology ideal for transmitting information from remote sensors and drones, key tools that are being tested by farmers. 5G is also helping to automate farming processes.UK initiative 5G RuralFirst launched a smartphone app in March called Me+Moo, which lets farmers track a “connected” cow and receive daily updates on the animal’s healthand behavior. The system, which is being tested on cows at the Agri-Epi Center in Somerset, England, is funded in part by UK government and supported by the tech company Cisco (CSCO). The cows wear 5G-connected collars that send data to the app on everything from what they’re eating to how they’re sleeping. Farmers can see the information instantly. “This provides peace of mind that the cows are happy, healthy and behaving normally, as well as early warning if they are getting sick, are pregnant or need to be checked,” said project manager Duncan Forbes.Yet to make a difference, 5G will first need to be installed in rural areas. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that in order to provide for the world’s rapidly rising population, the planet will need to grow 70% more food in 2050 than it did in 2009. “To respond to those demands, farmers will need new technologies to produce more from less land, with fewer hands,” reads one report from the organization. In 2017, another 5G RuralFirst project became the first in the world to successfully plant, tend and harvest a crop without a single human stepping foot in the field. Autonomous Automatic tractors sowed the seeds, drones with sensors monitored the crops, and smaller machines took samples from fields to assess what fertilizers and pesticides to apply. 12.Why can 5G help the farming?A.Because it can carry more information.B.Because it can be equipped with sensors.C.Because it can disrupt a lot of industries.D.Because it can be installed in rural areas.13.What did farmers do firstly if they wanted to use Me+Moo?A.They founded a tech company.B.They let the cows wear 5G-connected collars.C.They kept cows behaving normally.D.They made sure the cows were checked often.14.According to FAO, how will the world solve the food problem?A.People should control the rising population.B.People should find more and more land.C.People should turn to the new technology.D.People should learn to get more money.15.How did RuralFirst decide what kind of fertilizer to apply?A.It analyzed the soil.B.It dug earth with tractors.C.It employed experts.D.It hired drones with sensors.二、七选五A majority of the people do not read the classics. Their reasons begin with the language being too difficult and end with the storyline to distant to the present context. Love foreventually become close friends with private jokes between us. So how does one approach a classic?Don’t be afraid to be confused. We get it: it’s hard to power through confusion. It doesn’t feel great when a book makes you feel confused. Every reader has to start somewhere. 17 Instead, be proud of yourself for trying, and get excited about all the new things you’ll learn.Research, research, research.18 Researching the author-and the time and place they were writing about-can help you situate yourself during tricky passages. The author’s experience, viewpoint, and historical context might help you make the connections you might not have otherwise.Just pick the book up.This step is self-explanatory. While it’s not hard to just pick a book up, we know how difficult it can be to convince yourself to do so. 19 Take a deep breath, then leap onto the deck (甲板) of Melville’s Pequod or step cautiously through the gates of Castle Dracula.Remember: there is no right answer. There is no perfect way to read a classic text. There is no defining interpretation, no singular, exact answer. Your goal as a reader is to discover what aspects and insights are meaningful to you. Enjoy the process. 20 Even if your interpretation of the work isn’t quite perfect, it is still valuable!A.It is a gradual affair.B.Allow the book to grow with you.C.It has some form of historical influence.D.Before you turn to page one, do some digging.E.Never beat yourself up for not knowing something.F.Remind yourself that it’s a new learning opportunity.G.Consider what confuses you, read with intention, and think critically.三、完形填空The excitement was rising in me as I held a brand new laptop in my hands. Over the years, designers and artists have been trying to 11 the essentials of good design. They have found that some sayings can help people understand the ideas of good design. There are four as follows.Less is more. This saying is associated with the German-born architect Mies van der Rohe. In his Modernist view, beauty lies in simplicity and elegance, and the aim of the designer is to create solutions to problems through the most efficient means. Design should avoid unnecessary 12More is not a bore. The American-born architect Robert Venturi concluded that if simplicity is done badly, the result is 13 design. Post-Modernist designers began to 14 with decoration and color again. Product design was heavily influenced by this view and can be seen in kitchen 15 such as ovens and kettles.Fitness for purpose. Successful product design takes into consideration a product’s function, purpose, shape, form, color, and so on. The most important result for the user is that the product does what is 16 . For example, think of a(n) 17 desk lamp. It needs to be constructed from materials that will stand the heat of the lamp and regular adjustments by the user. It also needs to be stable. It ishad the awe-inspiring experience of standing in the heart of a primary rainforest.Rainforests have 22 over millions of years to turn into the incredibly complex environments they are today. Rainforests represent a store of living and 23 renewable natural resources that for an immeasurably long period of time, by virtue of their richness in both animal and plant species, have 24 a wealth of resources for the survival and well-being of humankind. These resources have included basic food supplies, clothing, shelter, fuel, spices, industrial raw materials, and medicine for all those who have lived in the majesty of the forest. 25 , the inner dynamics (动力学;相互作用的方式) of a tropical rainforest is a complex and fragile system. Everything is so 26 that upsetting one part can lead to unknown damage or even destruction of the whole. Sadly, it has taken only a century of human intervention to destroy what nature designed to 27 forever. The scale of human 28 on ecosystems everywhere has increased enormously in the last few decades. Since 1980 the global economy has tripled in size and the world population has increased by 30 percent. Consumption of everything on the planet has risen — at a cost to our 29 . In 2001, The World Resources Institute estimated that the demand for rice, wheat, and corn is expected to grow by 40% by 2025, increasing irrigation water demands by 50% or more. They further reported that the demand for wood could double by the year 2050; 30 , it is still the tropical forests of the world that supply the most part of the world’s demand for wood.In 1950, about 15 percent of the Earth’s land surface was covered by rainforest. Today, more than half has already gone up in 31 . In fewer than fifty years, about half of the world’s tropical rainforests have fallen 32 to fire or deforestation, and the rate of destruction is still 33 . Unbelievably, more than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day. That is more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year! More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone, and much more is severely 34 as the destruction continues. If nothing is done to control this 35 , the entire Amazon could well be gone within fifty years. Fewer rainforests mean lessrain, less oxygen for us to breathe, and an increased threat from global warming. 21.A.establish B.claim C.capture D.prove 22.A.extended B.evolved C.expanded D.resolved 23.A.energizing B.healing C.isolating D.breathing 24.A.destroyed B.contributed C.reduced D.affected 25.A.However B.Furthermore C.Therefore D.Otherwise 26.A.active B.positive C.interdependent D.dominant 27.A.restore B.support C.relieve D.last 28.A.pressure B.resources C.concern D.strengths 29.A.existence B.ecosystem C.species D.survival 30.A.unfortunately B.consequently C.naturally D.similarly 31.A.store B.food C.smoke D.wealth 32.A.subject B.down C.apart D.victim 33.A.running out B.going up C.holding back D.falling down 34.A.released B.revealed C.threatened D.boosted 35.A.trend B.practice C.intention D.attitude四、阅读理解Seasickness and sunburn. Taking care of old people in different situations. My medical friends did their best to persuade me. Everyone said that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after five sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的) years working as a junior doctor, I was willing to take the risk.Hungry for adventure, I boarded a bright white ship in Singapore. With 2,000 passengers and crew, she was the size of a small town.To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer. That first cruise (航行) was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills (演习). There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which of the uniforms to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to change my clock when the ship crossed time zones. As a doctor, I was responsible for the 600 crew including waiters, engineers, cooks andnavigators (领航员), and I was on call (随时待命的) for the entire ship.Far from treating seasickness and sunburn, as I’d been warned, my patients were wide and varied. The ship’s medical center was essentially a floating emergency room, but we didn’t have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness. As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly. Heart attacks don’t care about geography and emergency evacuations (疏散) were difficult to arrange.I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship on a stretcher (担架) halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in the back of an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits to the job. I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities, including the gym, spa and deck buffet (甲板自助餐). I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. On rare days off, I volunteered as a tour guide on trips ashore (在陆地). I got to fly over Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St Petersburg.I now understand that being a cruise ship doctor is not a job — it’s a way of life. One year at sea became two. I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life.36.What can we know about the author’s first cruise?A.She missed her job as a doctor.B.She enjoyed a relaxing lifestyle.C.She had to learn a lot of things.D.She often felt confused about her job duties.37.Why does the author mention the patient who was sent to the hospital in Panama City?A.To tell that it was difficult to look after old patients.B.To prove that being a cruise ship doctor is more tiring.C.To stress the importance of a well-equipped hospital on the ship.D.To show it was challenging to handle emergency situations on the ship.38.What is Paragraph 9 mainly about?A.The author’s experience as a tour guide.B.The advantages of being a cruise ship doctor.C.The loneliness of being the ship’s only doctor.D.Various facilities for passengers on the cruise ship.39.What does the author think of her experience as a cruise ship doctor?A.It was too stressful to tolerate.B.It helped her build a better career.C.It changed her understanding of happiness.D.It provided opportunities to make more friends. Are You a Moring Person?Mornings are not for everyone. Knowing that our own bodies may be wired to prefer a certain time of day is certainly a relief. But many of us still have to wake up and function during those first daylight hours. So what can you do?We tapped a variety of experts - from sleep experts to nutritionists to life organizational pros (生活管理达人) — to share their tricks on how to make morning less stressful and more pleasant for even the most after-hours of night owls.1. Night wakingPoor sleep quality can explain why we sometimes wake up from eight hours of snoozing and feel like we only clocked in at four. “It’s normal to have one or two awakenings, but more than that leaves us feeling groggy (昏昏沉沉) in the morning because of the fragmented sleep,” explains Shelby Harris, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at Montefiore Medical Center.2. The Science of snoozingThe snooze button does more harm than good. Nodding off again sends you into a light and fragmented sleep! Multiple snoozes can leave you feeling groggier than just getting out of bed the first time. Instead, be honest about the time you intend to get up and then enjoy every last minute of sleep, so you can wake up alert and ready to go.3. Don’t ease into your workdayIt can be tempting to plow through the easy things early on—checking e-mail, scanning the headlines—but it’s wise to tackle the bigger stuff first. “Getting to work on the most important tasks not only ups the chances that they actually get done, but it also leaves you with a burst of accomplishment to take with you the rest of the day,” says Jason Selk, coauthor of Organize Tomorrow Today.4. Save social media for laterSchedule a social media block later in the afternoon to check in when you’re likely toneed a break anyway, and save the morning for the important stuff.40.What’s the purpose of the passage?A.To help us to get the most out of our mornings.B.To relieve us from the guilt of multiple snoozes in the morning.C.To warn us of the harm of not getting out of bed immediately.D.To inform us about the fact that our bodies are wired to prefer a certain time of day. 41.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.One or two awakenings ensure us a good night’s sleep.B.To be an early bird, better forget about the snooze button.C.It’s important not to block social medium if you want to save your morning.D.Beginning a day with easy things aroused our interest and a sense of accomplishment. 42.Where can we find the passage?A.Classified Advertisement B.Travel BrochureC.Life and Study D.Scientific JournalWe all have a tendency to fake laugh, particularly when authority figures in our lives try to make a joke that just doesn’t land. Though it might feel rude not to laugh when your in-laws or boss try to say something funny, pretending to do so might not be much better. It turns out, even if you think that your forced laughing sounds genuine, people are usually pretty good at separating truly spirited belly laughs from fake ones. But how can they possible know the difference?Well, when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles studied the acoustic and perceptual differences between real and fake laughter, they found that some of the sounds associated with genuine laughter is “really hard to fake.” In their study, the researchers determined that subjects were only fooled by 37 percent of fake laughter. The most prominent factor distinguishing real laughter from fake laughter is duration --or, more specifically, the number of breaths taken in in between sounds. Seeing as it takes more effort and concentration to fake a laugh as opposed to do it genuinely, people tend to pause more in between their “ha-ha’s” when they’re faking it. Evidently, that pausing is pretty noticeable.“A fake laugh is basically an imitation of a real laugh, but produced with a slightly different set of vocal muscles controlled by a different part of our brain,” Greg Bryant, thelead UCLA researcher on the study, explained. “The result is that there are subtle features of the laugh that sound like speech, and ... people are unconsciously quite sensitive to them.”People have also proven to be emotionally sensitive to laughter as well. “Our rains are very sensitive to the social and emotional significance of laughter,” said Carolyn McGettigan, a scientist at Royal Holloway, University of London.McGettigan conducted a 2014 study that recorded participants’ brain responses as they listened to the same people produce genuine laughter by watching funny videos, as opposed to fake laughter. “During our study, when participants heard a laugh that was posed, they activated regions of the brain associated with mentalizing in an attempt to understand the other person’s emotional and mental state,” she said. So, while we may understand that certain social situations sometimes require fake laughter, most of the time, our instincts and emotional intelligence are just too smart to buy into them.According to McGettigan, that’s a good thing. “Evolutionarily speaking, it’s good to be able to detect if someone is authentically experiencing an emotion or if they’re not,” she said. “Because you don’t want to be fooled.”43.What do researchers at the University of California want to find out in this study?A.What is the difference between a fake laugh and a real one.B.Which part of the brain controls the sound of our laughter.C.Why do people need to fake laugh when they don’t want to.D.How to laugh as genuinely as possible when you are faking it.44.Your forced laughing is more noticeable than you think, mainly because_______.A.you seem more concentrated when you laugh for realB.you take more breaths when you try to fake a laughC.a fake laugh often happens after a sudden pauseD.a real laugh usually lasts longer than a fake one45.Which of the following is true according to Greg Bryant?A.Real laughter is not at all controllable by our brain.B.People may notice fake laughter without knowing why.C.People use the same set of muscles to laugh and to speak.D.Faking laugh shares the same techniques as making speech.46.What has Carolyn McGettigan’s 2014 study proven?A.Certain social situations may require us to fake a laugh.B.Evolution has enabled us to recognize other’s emotions.C.By instincts, we are able to tell a person’s mental state.D.We can sense other’s emotional state when they laugh.五、六选四Early Childhood EducationEarly childhood education is the formal teaching and care of young children. It primarily focuses on learning through playing to encourage children’s different kinds of development.47Studies with Head Start programs throughout the United States have shown some evidence that there are quite a few advantages to early childhood education, which can produce significant gains in children’s learning and development. Compared with a child who does not attend pre-school, children completing their early education programs are found to be better at math and reading skills. They are excited to learn and have the tools to do so.48 These children are more competent in their pre-school, kindergarten and school-age years, and they are usually reported as “friendlier” by parents and the children’s peers.49 In studies with matched control groups, more students who had early schooling experiences were employed at the age of 19, fewer were on welfare, and fewer were involved with the criminal activity. What’s more, some studies show that children attending pre-school are more likely to graduate and have higher education, and be well integrated as an adult.Early childhood education gives most children a jump-start on education for their kindergarten and primary school years. It is clear that early childhood education do a lot of good to children. 50 If early childhood education is less effective, perhaps the best model is finding strategies for allowing a parent to stay home with his or her child for at least the first two to three years. Also important is considering a child’s own personality. Individual differences in children mean that not all children will get equal benefits from early childhood education.A.The long-term influence of early education is significant as well.B.They can benefit greatly from encouragement in their early childhood.C.Yet its quality must be assessed to see what kind of benefits it actually provides.D.They are also able to relate to others in a superior way and that improves their social skills.E.Many experts of education, however, are concerned about what early childhood education means today.F.It consists of activities that serve children in the pre-school years and is designed to improve later school performance.六、概要写作51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. What Is Zero Waste? The goal of the “zero waste” movement is to get rid of all waste from products. “Zero waste” means using every part of a product. Today, the zero waste idea can be found everywhere from food to fashion.Creating a zero waste restaurant is a challenge. It is very difficult to use every part of produce and leave nothing behind. Creating a soup from unused ingredients is a popular way to use up extra food items. Other ways are more advanced. Some restaurants use coffee grounds(咖啡渣)to flavor dishes. Some cooks also crush shrimp shells and reuse them in sauces. While it’s challenging, zero waste restaurants appear to be on the rise.In the fashion industry, zero waste isn’t a new idea. But in today’s world of fast fashion, zero waste is growing more popular. Usually, cutting cloth creates lots of waste. In zero waste fashion, designers try to avoid this. One way to do so is by adding these extra pieces of cloth to the final design. Another way is to design clothing without wasteful cuts.Beyond restaurants and fashion, there are many other possibilities for zero waste products. All restaurants need utensils(器皿). Bakey’s is a company that is developing edible (可食用的)utensils. After using them, you can eat them! Their spoons are made of flour and come in all kinds of flavors. While these spoons are not hard enough to cut meat, they are perfect for rice dishes. Meanwhile, Air New Zealand is experimenting with edible coffee cups that are made by the company Twice. They have already introduced a line of flavored cups. After you finish your coffee, you eat the cup, just like a cookie!Whether products are made to be edible or reusable, hopefully the movement will helpreduce waste all over the world._______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ________________________七、汉译英(整句)52.性格温和的人也会在特定场合下发牌气。

In Portland, Oregon, temperature reached 46.6℃(116°F) — making it one of several cities in the region where former records have been beaten by a full 5℃(9°F). At the same time, heatwaves are also hitting central Europe and even Siberia.Heatwaves may become headlines, but less attention is paid to them. In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings. It is a silent killer. As many as 70,000 people died due to a heatwave in Europe in 2003.Heat also kills by worsening health conditions such as heart problems, so not all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed (归因) to it. Climate change will make heatwaves more common and more extreme. Even if greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) are cut to zero by the middle of this century, temperatures will go on rising for decades. So other measures are needed to protect people against extreme heat.Governments can set up early warning systems to alarm health workers, shut down schools and stop outdoor activities. They can provide the public with forecasts of coming heatwaves, explanations of the dangers and detailed advice on what to do. Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can fi nd shelter and sleep if necessary. The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects.8. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Improving Public Facilities B.Taking Heatwaves SeriouslyC.Preventing Natural Disasters D.Reducing Greenhouse-gas EmissionNew genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color. The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made. The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall. While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups op posing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.12. The Arctic apples will not be labeled “GMO” because ________.A.actually these apples are not genetically modified foodB.the fruit will be sold as bagged slices in up to 400 storesC.there is not enough space for the label on the packagingD.information of their apples can be checked on the Internet13. How do Arctic apples stay fresh according to the Okanagan team?A.By changing the fruit’s DNA to reduce relevant enzyme.B.By decreasing the percentage of engineers in the team.C.By treating apple slices with calcium and vitamin C.D.By adding a little bit of lemon juice to the slices.14. What is the Friends of the Earth’s attitude to Arctic apples?A.Disapproving. B.Indifferent. C.Favorable. D.Cautious.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.A Novel Way to Keep Arctic Apples From Turning color.B.Protest against Apples Entering US Markets due to the label.C.GM Apples That Don’t Brown to Reach US Shelves This Fall.D.Apples That Can Stay Free of Browning as Long as Three Months.Four ways to cope with burnoutBurnout is a feeling of physical and mental tiredness. It can come from working overtime or under stressful conditions. 16 . All you have to do is identify feelings of burnout and know how to deal with them. Try these out next time you’re feeling overwhelmed (不知所措的).●Focu s on advancing tiny goals.17 Experts suggest starting small and dividing the whole schedule into the smallest sections. Setting and achieving tiny goals can increase people’s engagement in the work and their happiness during the workday.●Take time for y ourself.Ask for a rest day if you need one to do nothing other than eat your favorite ice cream, go for a run, or meet a friend for lunch. 18 Be sure to get enough sleep each night, too; this has a huge effect on one’ s mental well-being and performance.● 19It’s hard to feel frustrated after a sweaty weightlifting or a long run, Exercise reduces students’ sensitivity to anxiety, so think of that exercise time as building your protection against the burnout. Extra points if you do it outside in the sunshine.●Talk to people.People’s health, well-being, everything in life, is way better if you’re connected with other people. I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep. We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.1. How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?A.Scared. B.Puzzled. C.Disappointed. D.Surprised.2. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?A.He was a western journalist. B.He had a knowledge of China.C.He came to China several times. D.He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.3. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?A.They honored the ancestors. B.They set off in high spirits.C.They satisfied the locals' curiosity. D.They built bonds with people.4. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?A.To share and reflect on a journey. B.To suggest a new way of travel.C.To advocate protection of biodiversity. D.To introduce and promote Chineseculture.3. Besides “wow” and “great”, what else would you say when flying over the Earth in space? Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian female astronaut in space, posted several lines of a famous ancient Chinese composition on Twitter to share her joy.She first wrote in Chinese, and then attached an accurate translation of the lines in both Italian and English to help more people understand. “Looking up, I see the immensity of the cosmos; bowing my head, I look at the multitude of the world. The gaze flies, the heart expands, the joy of the senses can r each its peak, and indeed, this is true happiness,” it says. Two days before she landed on Earth, the beauty of space and Chinese literature resonated on her Twitter account. Before long, her posts went viral on Twitter with thousands of retweets, likes and replies. The text she quoted is from the Preface to Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion,a Chinese calligraphy masterpiece by Wang Xizhi (303-361) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). She also attached three photos taken in space of China’s Bohai Bay a nd the day-night view of Beijing. “The poem and views are both magnificent as well as healing. If everyone could enjoy the same sight, a lot of pain in the world would be ‘dissipated’,” one user comments. As the first Italian female astronaut in space, Cristoforetti carried out her first space mission on Nov 23, 2014. In 2022, she started the second mission in April and returned to Earth on Friday night after a 127-day stay in orbit.Cristoforetti has also been active in Sino-European cooperation in the field of manned spaceflight. She was a working group member with Chinese counterparts to define and implement cooperation in the field of astronaut operations. When not traveling for work, she is an eager reader and has a great passion for languages. Speaking clear Chinese, Cristoforetti once told the media that the teams from China and Europe were working very well together in the field of astronaut training.1. In a fascinating paper published last year in Science, a team led by Andreas Nieder of the University of Tubingen in Germany showed that crows —already known to be among the most intelligent of animals —are even more impressive than we knew. In fact, the evidence suggests that they are self-aware and, in an important sense, conscious (有意识的).Crows had been observed previously to use tools to solve certain problems. Nieder’s experiment showed that the birds were actively evaluating how to solve a particular problem; in effect, they were thinking it over. This ability to consciously assess a problem was associated with the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) in the brains of humans, which birds don’t have.Other studies support the idea that the bird brain can, in principle, support the development of higher intelligence. It had been dismissed in the past due to the small size of birds’ brains. But recent research has shown that in birds, the neurons (神经元) are smaller and more lightly-packed, which makes sense to reduce weight and makes it easier lo fly. The total number of brain cell in crows (about 1.5 billion) is about the same as that in some monkey species. But because they are more tightly-packed, the communication between the neurons seems to be better, and the overall intelligence of crows may be closer to that of gorillas (猩猩).This research has important consequences for our understanding of the evolution of higher intelligence. First, a cerebral cortex is not needed, and there are other means to achieve the same outcome. Second, either the evolution of consciousness is very ancient tracing back to the last common ancestor of mammals and birds about 320 million years ago, or, equally interesting, consciousness arose at least twice later on, independently in mammals and birds. Both options raise the possibility that higher intelligence on the planet may not necessarily be mammal or human-like, but could very well be birdlike.1. What did Andreas Nieder’s team find out about crows?A.They are more intelligent than other animals.B.They have left people a very good impression.C.They are much cleverer than previously thought.D.They can use tools to solve certain problems.2. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.The idea. B.The bird brain.C.The development. D.Higher intelligence.3. Why do crows have high-level intelligence?A.They have more tightly-packed brains.B.They have a small number of brain cells.C.Their brain neurons could communicate well.D.Their brain cells are the same with the monkeys.4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Cerebral cortexes are necessary for the evolution of higher intelligence.B.Both mammals and birds got their intelligence from common ancestors.C.Higher intelligence has already developed separately in different species.D.Higher intelligence on the planet might be different from what we imagine.5. Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. 1 . Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.2 . For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on the fresh air, sunshine and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing used during the exercise.3 . Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise. Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem. 4 .Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. 5 . Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts which helpstrengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.6. In fact, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t. Earlier this year, I worked in a new film. It was about a bomb threat on a big British ship. Two hundred people were needed to act as the passengers in the film. I was one of them. Before we left, we were wanted to bring some warm clothes. These were necessary because the ship was going to spend the whole 16 days sailing in bad weather. Then the day came and we sailed out of Dover. The boat had on board the film crew, the director, the actors and actresses including Brinksley Meers, who acted the leading role, and us-200 amateur(业余的) extras.People came for different purposes. Some wanted to meet Brinksley Meers in person. Others were curious to see how a film was made. A housewife with her three children came for free holiday and a bit of adventure.During the voyage, a lot of people were very seasick. And although the work was very interesting, it was also very hard. We often worked all day on one scene, performing it again and again under the hot lights. In the evenings, there were drinks in the bar, but most people were so tired that they went to bed early. The next day often began at 6:30 in the morning, sometimes with breakfast being filmed. When the ship finally returned to port, most people had enjoyed the trip, but were also so tired that they at least needed a week’s holiday. Answer the following questions: 56.Which role did the author act in the film?57.Why the film crew were asked to bring some warm clothes?58.Who acted the leading role?59.Why the author said “they at least needed a week’s holiday”?60.what do you think of the author want to tell us about making a film?五、书信写作61.假设你是李华,你发现你的英国网友的生活方式不太健康,你想给地是一些建议。
