Starting the Engine
Table of Contents
Use caution if you ever drive your vehicle on very rough or rutted roads. You could damage the suspension and underbody by bottoming out. Going too fast over parking lot ‘‘speed bumps’’ can also cause damage.
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. In cold weather, turn off all electrical accessories to reduce the drain on the battery.
3. Push the clutch pedal down all the way. The ENGINE START button has no effect unless the clutch pedal is pressed.
6. If the engine does not start within 15 seconds, or starts but stalls right away, repeat step 5 with the accelerator pedal pressed halfway down. If the engine starts, release pressure on the accelerator pedal so the engine does not race.

Press release 24 February 2020 Innovative printing method for body paintworkA Porsche as personal as your own fingerprintStuttgart. It's already the case that hardly any Porsche is the same as another. But from now on, the 911 can even be as unique as the papillary lines on a human fingertip. Using an innovative direct printing method developed by Porsche, graphic elements of the highest visual quality can now be printed onto the painted body parts of a vehicle. Initially, customers who purchase a new 911 can have the bonnet personalised with a design based on their own fingerprint. In the medium term, other customer-specific designs will become available. This service is available through the Porsche Centres, which establish contact with the customer consultants at the Exclusive Manufaktur in Zuffenhausen. These consultants discuss the entire process with the customer, from submission of the fingerprint to completion of the vehicle.“Individuality is very important for Porsche customers. And no design can be more personal than your own fingerprint,” says Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individuali-zation and Classic. “Porsche is a pioneer in personalisation and has developed the direct printing method together with partners. We’re especially proud of having devel-oped a completely new product offering based on new technologies. A key factor in this was the different disciplines working together in the project team.” For the project, a so-called “technology cell” was set up in the paint shop of the Zuffenhausen training centre. It was here that the new software and hardware as well as the associated paint-ing and manufacturing process were developed and tested. The decision to locate the technology cell in the training centre was intentional: among other things, it will also be used to introduce the trainees to pioneering technologies.Dr. Ing. h.c. F. In terms of look and feel, the new technology is clearly superior to film application. The operating principle is similar to that of an inkjet printer: using a print head, the paint is applied to three-dimensional components automatically and without overspray. “The ability to control the nozzles individually permits targeted application of every paint droplet,” explains Christian Will, Vice President Production Development at Porsche AG. “The complexity is due to the necessity of harmonising three technol-ogies: robot technology (control, sensors, programming), application technology (print head, graphic handling) and paint technology (application process, paint).”Porsche Exclusive ManufakturIf a customer decides to enhance their 911 with the direct printing method, the special-ists in the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur disassemble the bonnet following series pro-duction. The customer’s biometric data is processed so as to make sure it cannot be used for an unauthorised purpose. The entire process takes place in direct communi-cation with the customer, who has a complete overview of how their personal data is used and is also integrated in the creation process of their print graphic. After the robot paints the unique design, a clear coat is applied and the bonnet is then polished to a high-gloss finish in order to meet the highest quality standards. Then the enhanced component is reinstalled. The service costs 7,500 euros (including VAT) in Germany and will be provided by the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur on request from March 2020.The Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur creates very personal customer vehicles through a combination of perfect craftsmanship and high technology. 30 highly qualified employ-ees devote their full attention to every detail and take the time needed to achieve a perfect result through painstaking manual work. Información de Prensa 28/4/2020 Actualizaciones en el Porsche 911 CarreraTransmisión manual de siete velocidades y nuevas opciones para el 911Stuttgart. Desde ahora, en Europa y en algunos otros mercados, todos los modelos 911 Carrera S y 4S se pueden solicitar sin ningún coste añadido con una caja de cambios manual de siete marchas, como alternativa a la transmisión PDK de ocho velocidades. La caja de cambios manual se combina con el pack Sport Chrono, lo que supone un atractivo adicional para aquellos conductores que aman la deportividad y disfrutan cambiando de marcha ellos mismos. También se añaden nuevas opciones de equipamiento para el 911 Carrera, que antes no estaban disponibles. Entre ellas se incluye el Porsche InnoDrive, utilizado ya en los modelos Panamera y Cayenne, así como la nueva función Smartlift para el eje delantero.Para puristas: transmisión manual de siete velocidades con pack Sport Chrono La transmisión manual de siete marchas para el 911 Carrera S y 4S siempre se ofrece en combinación con el pack Sport Chrono. También está incluido el Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), con distribución variable de par a través de intervenciones controladas del freno en las ruedas traseras y un diferencial autoblocante mecánico. Consiste en un golpe de acelerador cuando el conductor reduce de marcha, para aumentar las revoluciones del motor y adaptarlas a la mayor velocidad con que gira el engranaje del cambio al insertar esa marcha más baja. Con ello se consiguen unas reducciones más suaves, que evitan cambios de carga bruscos. El pack también incorpora otros ingredientes deportivos como los soportes de motor dinámicos, el modo PSM Sport, el conmutador de modos en el volante (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Wet e Individual), así como un cronómetro y la aplicación Porsche Track Precision.El 911 Carrera S con transmisión manual acelera de 0 a 100 km/h en 4,2 segundos y alcanza una velocidad máxima de 308 km/h. El peso en vacío del 911 Carrera S Coupé con cambio manual es de 1.480 kilogramos, lo que supone 35 kg menos que la versión con PDK.Por primera vez en el 911 Carrera: Porsche InnoDrive y SmartliftOtra novedad es la inclusión del Porsche InnoDrive en la lista de opciones del 911. En las variantes con la transmisión PDK, el control de crucero adaptativo amplía las ayudas a la conducción al añadir la función predictiva, que optimiza la velocidad de marcha con una antelación de hasta tres kilómetros. Utilizando los datos del navegador, calcula los valores de aceleración y deceleración óptimos para los siguientes tres kilómetros, y los va ajustando por medio del motor, la transmisión PDK y el sistema de frenos. Si lo deseamos, este copiloto electrónico tiene en cuenta de forma automática las curvas, pendientes y límites de velocidad que nos vamos a encontrar. El conductor cuenta con la posibilidad de definir manualmente la velocidad máxima en cualquier momento. El sistema detecta la situación actual del tráfico utilizando un radar y sensores de vídeo, y se adapta en consecuencia. También reconoce las rotondas. Igual que con el control de crucero adaptativo convencional, el InnoDrive también adapta continuamente la distancia a los vehículos de delante.La nueva función opcional Smartlift para todas las versiones del 911, permite levantar automáticamente el frontal en determinadas zonas memorizadas. Con el sistema electrohidráulico del eje delantero, la altura libre del morro al suelo se incrementa en unos 40 milímetros. 66By Peter Weidenhammer Fast, lightweight, and with new racing technology: right on time for the ftieth anniversary of the 911 sports-car icon, Porsche is presenting the third generation of the GT3. e Fast and the Furious o street-legal 911 is closer to racing. e GT3 essentially always has two of its wheels on the racetrack. It is pure, polar-izing, and emblematic. Around 80 percent of all 911 GT3s are also driven on racing circuits. Professionals like to explore the limits of these driving machines. At the same time, nearly all GT3s can also be found in normal road tra c, for that is one of the great special features of this small and select cir-cle of top athletes—the 911 GT3 is suitable for everyday driving; it doesn’t allow the road to be eclipsed by the track. e new GT3 is based on the body of the latest genera-tion of the 911 Carrera. is gives the two-seater that exemplary composite aluminum-steel shell which com-bines low weight with high rigidity. e new body, of course, also comes with the geometry of its chassis: a longer wheelbase and a wider track (2.1 more inches in the front, 1.2 inches in the back), both of which are also helpful for the rush around the racing circuit. e car o ers ideal conditions for superior longitudinal and lat-eral dynamics: with an additional 3.9 inches of wheel-base, the new 911 GT3 drives as if on rails at very high speeds too, while the wider front track is key in ensur-ing that the car takes curves with even greater agility and stability.N 67USWith its wheelbase lengthened by 3.9 inches,the new 911 GT3 drives as if on rails. e wider front track gives it evengreater agility and stability in curves.68and highest gear. It o ers all of the majordynamic driving properties of a manual transmission,supplemented by the performance bene ts of a double-clutch transmission. Its predecessor’s shift sequence hasbeen ipped to match the usual mode in racing: pullingthe paddle switch will cause the car to shift up, whereasto downshift you now have to press.e gures speak for themselves: the GT3 storms from0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, and doesn’t stop acceler-ating until 196 mph. e longitudinal dynamics by nomeans lag behind their lateral counterparts. is isthe rst GT3 in which the rear axle steers actively too.at means more dynamic turn-in performance at lowspeeds and even better driving stability at high speeds.Y et active rear-axle steering (see also “Practical Physics,”pages 70–72) is no longer the nishing touch in this su-perb strategy for driving dynamics. Its basis consists ofthe fully aluminum chassis with the PASM active sus-pension system, the wider track, the longer wheelbase,and the 20-inch wheels. Dynamic engine bearings en-sure that no unwelcome disturbances originate from theengine mass, even during fast lane changes under ex-treme conditions. And nally, the sophisticated aerody-namics and the striking rear fenders ensure a stabilizingdownforce on the front and rear axles. One more resultthat speaks for itself: the lap time on the Nordschleife ofthe Nürburgring lies under 7:30 minutes.A lot can be built on this foundation. e rst ingre-dient is a completely new engine. A six-cylinder boxerengine with 3.8 liters of displacement generates 350 kW(475 horsepower). Although based on the assembly inthe 911 Carrera S, it has practically none of the samecomponents. Changes to the design have focused inlarge part on further developing the high rpm valuescharacteristic of the 911 GT3. High rpm levels enablehigh levels of engine performance as well as a better owof power when shifting gears. If drivers make full useof the broader range of rpm, it means they have morerpm right after shifting up and the engine can put morepower immediately into acceleration. e new engineachieves this by means of racing technology which uses arocker-lever control system to open the valves in special-ly developed cylinder heads. Small moving masses canthereby enable a peak engine speed of 9,000 rpm. Allof the remaining components of the boxer engine, espe-cially the crank and valve drive, have been developed oradapted especially for the GT3.
