Sometimes, you might not finish drinking your glass of water before you go to bed. You might want to drink it the next morning. But have you ever wondered if it is still safe to drink?
“If you have clean water in a clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute in the US told Time.
But you may find that it tastes strange. That’s because after about 12 hours, the carbon dioxide in the air reacts with the water in your glass, slightly lowering its pH level.
Also, there might be more microorganisms in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow more quickly at room temperature. These microorganisms can stick to your glass. They can make you get sick more easily. But as long as you clean your glasses very often, this will not be a problem.
In countries like the US and UK, people often drink water directly from the tap . This is OK – however, tap water
cannot be stored for a long time. Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, US. After six months, there is less chlorine in the water and bacteria start to grow. You’d better not drink the water otherwise you may get sick.
What about plastic water bottles? Schwab said people should be careful with them. If you leave a bottle of water under the sun or in a car for a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical called BPA.This chemical can cause heart disease and cancer.

C.Many people drink water directly from the tap because of no bacteria in the running water.
D.Kellogg Schwab advised us to drink clean water in a clean glass for a day or two.

18、All living things on Earth need water to live. Yet humans are facing serious water problems. According to the United Nations, today over 113 million people live without a safe water supply close to home.
To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first set up World Water Day in 1443. It is on Mar 22 each year. From Mar 22 to 23 is also the China Wat er Week. The first year’s theme is “Waste water”. It tried to call people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
In Australia people make good use of waste water. Most Australians have a grass lawn around their home instead of washing the car in the street. Many of them wash it on the lawn to keep the grass longer so that it covers the ground and reduce evaporation.
Rainwater may seem useless to you. But you can also reuse it. People in Germany collect rainwater to wash their toilets. Most houses in the country that are built in the last few years have rainwater collection devices(设备). Rainwater is collected from the root, and then linked to the toilet. But if you don’t have the device just put a bucket(桶)under your roof when it rains.
Water makes up 21 percent of Earth’s surface. But we can only use a very small part of it. Only about 3 percent of
the world’s water is fresh water. It’s in lakes, rivers and underground.
Over 30 percent of the waste water in the world goes back into the nature. It has not been cleaned and pollutes the rivers and lakes. Unsafe water makes around 342,000 people die each year.
By 2030, about half of the world’s population could be facing water problem. By 2050, as many as seven billion people across the world could not have enough water supplies. The world’s population might be 4.3 billion by then. 1.From paragraph 1, we can learn that___________ .
A.people around the world are facing serious water problems.
B.water is always the most important in our school lives
C.saving water can help us better improve the environment.
D.people in different places have different habits to use water.

A.collect rainwater to wash their toilets
B.remind people of the importance of water
C.put a bucket under your roof when it rains.
D.call people to reuse waste water instead of wasting it.
3.The word “reduce” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “___________ .”.

19、“What time should junior high school students leave school?”This week we have held a class meeting to talk about it. Here is the result of the discussion.
Most students think that students should leave school at about 5 o 'clock. They can exercise to keep healthy and read more interesting books after school.
Some think that students should leave school at 4:45, because they can have more time to do what they want to do, such as listening to music.
A few think 5 o 'clock is the best time to finish school. After school, they can do part-time jobs, such as collecting discarded plastic bottles to sell for money.
I am in favor of leaving school at five o'clock. Besides having time to play tennis, I can also draw some pictures I like.。
