My mom just bought me a new bike. Since my cousin Mary didn’t have a bike with her, she walked next to me. I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier(行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “ Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,” she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.”
I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. A few minutes later, I turned right to a wide road. “Jump on the back, ”I told Mary. I rode fast, laughing as the wind blew through our hair. It was exciting, until the handlebar(车把) started shaking. The front tire dropped into a drain (下水道) and I fell off the bike, still holding the handlebar.
My face, hands, and knees crashed into the pavement. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. I wanted Mom to say, “Oh, my poor sweetheart. Let me hug you and everything will be fine.”
However, my mom only said, “What have you done to your face? Vanessa, look at what you’ve done!” Mom wasn’t the gentle “ I love you, sweetie” type.
Sometimes, I thought Mom had no mercy. But in her own way, she was holding me tighter than I could understand—she was teaching me the lesson I needed. “ You did it—deal with it and learn from it. One day, the
results will be greater and I won’t be there to help you. Think it out, Vanessa.”

In Africa, Christmas Day begins with groups of carolers (欢唱颂歌的人) walking to and from through the village, along the roadway, by the houses of the missionaries (传教士), singing the lovely carols known to the world around. Often people may be awakened by a group of carolers beginning to gather at the house of worship(敬神活动). They return home to make final preparations as to the clothes one must wear and also as to their offering for the Christmas service.
The most important part of their Christmas worship service is the love offering. This is the gift in honor of Jesus. At about 8 or 9 o’clock everyone makes their way to the celebration of the birthday of Jesus. Everyone who attends the service goes forward to lay down their gift upon the raised platform near the Communion table. No one will attend the service without giving a gift.
Christmas in South Africa is a summer holiday. There is no snow, but it has many flowers, many beautiful varieties of wild flowers being in their full pride.
In Ghana, most churches show the coming of Christmas by decorating the church and homes beginning with the first week in Advent, four weeks before Christmas. This season happens to be the time of cocoa harvest, so it is a time of wealth. Everyone returns home from wherever they might be such as farms or mines.
In Africa, it is the traditional dinner of turkey, roast beef, mince pies, or suckling pig, yellow rice with raisins, vegetables, and plum pudding, crackers. In the afternoon, families go out into the country and usually there are games or bathing in the warm sunshine, and then home in the cool of the evening. Boxing Day is also a proclaimed (正式宣布的) public holiday usually spent in the open air. It falls on December 26 and is a day of real relaxation.

Many of us have become so reliant(依赖的) on our smartphones that we use them to carry out unbelievable 221 tasks every day.
A study of 2,000 smartphone owners shows that the average user reaches for their phone at 7:31 am each morning, to check personal emails and Facebook. And before they’ve even got out of bed, most of them check the weather, read the news, and send a text or two to friends. It also appeared that people will check the train times, do their banking and update what they want early in the day.
In an average week, the research discovered that users pick up their phone more than 1,500 times to complete different tasks from emails to playing games and posting to social media. And the average smartphone user is on their phone for three hours and sixteen minutes a day. This amounts to almost one full day a week using their phone, so it’s no wonder almost four in ten users admitted feeling lost without their tool.
Many owners also admitted to finding themselves using their phone without realizing they’re doing so, with two thirds saying they have managed to log in(登录) and browse(浏览) Facebook without thinking. And
surprisingly, four in ten said they have, at one time or another, checked their emails automatically(自动的) without thinking.
The study has also showed that our smartphones are now becoming more
of a “go-to-gadget”, replacing desktops and laptops, which people only turn to for, on average, 140 tasks in a typical day.
32.Tasks carried out on smartphones are about _______ more than those on desktops and laptops.
A. 221
B. 140
C. 1.500
D.
80
33. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. People often use their phone unconsciously (无意识地).
B. One third managed to browse Facebook without thinking.
C. Half of people checked their emails automatically.
D. Six in ten people don’t check their emails.
34. The underlined word “go-to-gadget”in Paragraph 5 means “_________”.
A. a funny expression
B. an important study
C. a tool with intelligence
D. an interesting game
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Are we dependent on our smartphones?
B. The functions of smartphones
C. The disadvantages of smartphones
D. Smartphones will take the place of desktops and laptops

If you go around the room ask a handful of people how to memorize things quickly, most of them will probably tell you repetition. That is so far from the truth. 36 However, recalling something will. The problem is that recalling something requires learning, and we all learn in different ways. Below are some universal steps to master the art of recalling.
Write everything down
Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and rewrite the information. 37 Doing this while listening to your tape recorder can also help you keep the data (数据).
Divide your notes into parts
38 This is ideal for visual (视觉的) learners. This will help you break everything down and start dividing the information into several parts in your brain.
Teach it to someone
The most effective method for me when I was in school was to teach the information to someone else. My favorite method for this is creating
tests for other people. 39 You can lecture someone sitting right in front of you or behind you about the knowledge. You can also teach it to a mirror. Take a break
40 Go for a short time without thinking about what you just learned and come back to it later on. You’ll find out what you really know and this will help you pay more attention to the parts you might be the weakest at.
A. You can do this in a lot of ways.
B. Finally, let your mind breathe.
C. It is not difficult to write everything down.
D. Now that you have everything written down in a set of notes, divide them into parts.
E. This will help you become more familiar with what you’re trying to memorize.
F. If you want to memorize something quickly, repetition won’t make it.
G. This is especially useful if you’re trying to memorize information from a lecture.
