That's not the saying, but doctors have agreed, for about a generation, that an aspirin a day is good for you. It may reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes by 20 percent or more. The US Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group convened by the Department of Health and Human Services, has published guidelines that it says should end the confusion. The key points:⒈Men should start a daily aspirin at age 45, mainly to protect against heart attacks.⒉Women should start at 55, mainly to protect against stroke.⒊For both sexes, a baby aspirin-typically 81 milligram a day-will do the job. There is no evidence that a large dose makes a difference.⒋And both sexes should stop by age 80, unless their doctors say otherwise. As you get older, there's a greater risk of bleeding in the brain or the digestive system, a risk that is small but can be deadly in some cases. If people start taking aspirin as the guidelines, doctors say their risk of heart attacks will drop by about 20 percent. "People may ask themselves 'Am I at risk for a heart attack or a stroke?'" said Dr. Randal Thomas, director of cardiovas-cular health at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota "If you are age 45 and male, if you're above age 55 and female, the answer is most likely yes, and you will most likely benefit from taking a small dose of aspirin a day.(1)What might Dr. Tim Johnson think of taking an aspirin a day?A. You might even find yourself with a head full of false memories. But rarely does science explore the dark side of sleeping too much. That's because few of us in today's busy world have the luck of exploring that option. In an August 2018 study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers researched the sleep patterns of those "fortunate" few and found they may not be so lucky after all. In fact, they found people who get more than eight hours of sleep have greater health risk compared to those who sleep together less than seven hours. What's more, sleep-aholics-those who manage to get 10 hours a night-stand a 30 percent higher chance of dying compared to the seven-hour crowd. The wide-ranging global study involved(涉及) more than three million people who self-reported on their sleep habits and came to an eye-opening conclusion: If you tend to sleep a lot, you may want to buy an alarm clock. As with all things in life, sleep is best taken in moderation(适度).You may be thinking: What if I only sleep in on Saturday and Sunday, am I still at risk? Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low, and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room all make life difficult for those of above average height, it says. But it is not just the extra-tall whose needs are not being met. The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged."The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it, so even a king-size bed at 6′6″ (6 feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25% of men, while the standard 6′3″ bed caters for less than half of the male population." Said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy, "seven-foot beds would work fine."Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems. Small tables, which mean the long-legged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere. Some have already taken note, however. At Queens Moat Houses′ Caledoman Hotel in Edinburgh, 6′6″ beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.(1)What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?A. To provide better services.B. To rebuild hotels and restaurants.C. To draw public attention to the needs of the tall.D. To attract more people to become its members.(2)Which of the following might be a bed of proper length according to Phil Heinricy? A. 7′2″. 高考英语二轮复习阅读练习附答案Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their handswere burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. Areally fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which manand animals might soon die out.In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street bya car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing isnot to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you haveto decide what action to take.In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can doto avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to goand live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fearhas given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger isno longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if_________.A. they were not well educated at schoolB. they had never played withfire beforeC. they had no sense of painD. they were fearful of pain61. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because _________.A. they have gained experienceB. they are warned of the danger and take quick actionC. they jump out of the way in timeD. they are calm in face of danger62. The next day the students' memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them.''When people rely on technology to remember them — counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained. But there is also an exception: if students zoomed in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens (镜头) on a specific area could even recall parts that weren't in the frame. So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn't reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.“In order to remember, we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just collect them,” Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research has shown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they aren't usually very organized on their computers.(1)Why did the author mention Henkel's trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning? A. To complain about some tourists' bad habits. B. To give suggestions on how to enjoy one's tour.C. To point out people's obsession with taking pictures.D. To describe the beautiful view of the Grand Canyon.(2)What can we learn from Henkel's study?A. Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories easily.B. Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.C. People should spend more time taking pictures than studying real objects.D. Pictures focusing on the details of objects probably improve people's memories.(3)The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 probably refers to “________”.A. the cameraB. technologyC. the eventD. an object(4)What is the article mainly about?A. 二轮复习高考英语专题复习任务型阅读(含答案)一、高中英语任务型阅读1.任务型阅读Just as team members today have assigned doing roles, there should also be thinking roles. By knowing how other members of your learn and organization think---and by others knowing how you think—everyone can be more productive. So how should you evaluate how you and your team think? After a lot of trial-and-error, we developed a three-step method that delivers practical and meaningful results.Focus. Do you tend to pay the most attention to ideas, process, action, or relationships? For example, in the morning do you think about the problems you need to solve, the plans you need to make, the actions you need to take, or the people you need to see? This isn't about picking one to the exclusion(排除)of the other. It's about where your focus naturally lands.Orientation(方向). A good way to identify your orientation is thinking about what tends to bother you in meetings. Are you more likely to complain about getting dragged into the weeds or about things being too general and not specific enough? These dimensions are complementary(补充的)to personality, skills, and traditional roles.Combination. By combing these two dimensions you can know about the thinking style at work in whatever context or setting you chose. When you know your thinking style, you know what naturally energizes you, why certain type of problems are challenging or boring, and what you can do to improve in areas that are important to reaching your goals. Once you know your style, it helps to share it with others, and have others share theirs with you. In this way, your thinking style becomes a useful tool---a kind of social currency---for the team. Imaging you put together a team to work on a new initiative(行动). Wouldn't you like to know who is energized by big-picture strategy discussions and who finds them frustrating? Who likes to work on the details of the execution? And who is energized by managing the team dynamics? The landscape of business is changing rapidly, and we have to find new and better ways to connect and communicate. We all want to work better together, the challenge is actually making it happen. Understanding collaboration(合作)through the way of thinking rather than doing is a practical and powerful step forward.【答案】equally;improve/increase;evaluating;thinking;choice;whether;combine;contributes/leads;Conclusion;how【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,正如今天的团队成员分配的角色一样,也应该有思考的角色,两者同样重要。

二轮复习高考英语专题复习阅读理解(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Engineers in Upstate New York have invented a folded paper device that looks like a decorated art project. But don't be fooled. This is actually a paper-based battery. No, it doesn't look like any of those metal batteries running flashlights or smartphones. In these systems, the battery can be printed on a page. The battery's power consists of living bacteria.Paper electronics are simple to make and inexpensive, notes study leader Seokheun Choi, an engineer at Binghamton University. They need no electrical outlet to recharge. They just need more bacteria, which can be found everywhere — including dirty water."Most batteries use chemicals to generate electricity. Substituting bacteria can be an advantage," Choi says. "They are cheap and self-repairing." What paper-based batteries won't do is generate much power. They do, however create enough to run small devices in faraway or dangerous places — such as a battlefield. They might also find use in medicine. For instance, they might power tiny sensors, such as the types used to measure blood sugar. This invention is based on an observation made more than a century ago — that microbes (微生物) produce electricity as they digest food. Scientists refer to the bio-batteries based on this principle as microbial fuel cells. A fuel cell generates electricity like a regular battery. But a regular battery stops producing electricity when its inner chemical reactions stop. A fuel cell uses fuel that can be refilled. In this case, bacteria serve as the fuel. By refilling more microbes, as needed, scientists can keep these fuel cells running.Lab tests have shown that the new battery can produce a current. Now, Choi and his team are looking at ways to increase the power. They're studying different shapes and materials for the anode and cathode (正负极). They're also looking for the best ways to combine batteries for more power. The beauty of the paper devices is that you can simply fold them to connect them. And they surely will be a trend in the near future.(1)What makes the paper-based batteries different from other batteries?A. They are mainly used to run smartphones.B. They use bacteria to generate electricity.C. They are used to decorate small devices.D. They take a much shorter time to recharge.(2)What can the paper-based batteries do?A. Power tiny devices.B. Lower blood sugar levels.C. Produce much electricity.D. Change chemicals in the paper.(3)What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A. The application of the new battery.B. The characteristics of the paper batteries.C. The intention to invent the device.D. The working principle of the invention.(4)What is the author's attitude towards the development of the paper-based batteries?A.Defensive.B.Optimistic.C.Doubtful.D.Ambiguous.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了纸基电池的原理,这种电池可以通过微生物进行充电,同时,该电池也可以运用在医学方面,如测试血糖等。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

They Just Can't Help ItMy theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy —the ability to understand other people —and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. ________ For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport. You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. ________ It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. ________ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神经) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men. ________ Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another. Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性别) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. ________ It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.A. Generally speaking, there are clear differences.B. Their preference for building systems may change over time.C. You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.D. They will consider many sources of information at the same time.E. It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.F. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.G. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad's family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ‘a skeleton in his family's closet’. He really wouldn't want any neighbor to konw about it.”“Why pick on my family?” Jessica's father said with anger. “Your family history isn't so good, you know. Wasn't your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes”“Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ance stors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse. After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica's parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica's closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica's mother sank into a faint(晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school's skeleton, Mum,”explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They're both crazy,” she thought.本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了一个幽默故事。

AI was walking along the deserted main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking somewhere to make a phone call.My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to get in touch with the Automobile Association .Low gray clouds weredrifting across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea.It had rained in the night and water was dripping from the bare trees that lined the street.I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat.I could see no call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour I could ask.I had thought I might find a shop selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his job, but the town was completely dead. Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street next to it was the town's only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint, I hurried forward but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was very fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat and rubber boots.I could not see his face - he was bending forward over the phone with his back pressed against the glass and didn't even raisehis head at the sound of my coming nearer and nearer.Carefully and surprisedly, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait my turn.It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the call box door.1.The author was walking through the small seaside town__________.A.late morning B.before midnightC.early morning D.late evening2.The weather of the day was ____, when the story happened.A.stormy, damp and clear B.windy, cold and cloudyC.rainy, cold and clear D.rainy, windy and cold3.Why was the author astonished when he saw that there was a man in the call box? Radcliffe himself doesn't seem to be bothered by his change of appearance. In an interview with GQ magazine last week, he teased himself: "If people find me sexy or cool, it's because they like short, little, nerdy guys. And we do have our niche〔适宜的职业〕."Meanwhile, actors growing up to be handsome have their headaches.Harry Melling, who played Potter's cousin Dudley Dursley, told The Telegraph that he was almost recast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when producers discovered he' d lost a lot of weight he had as a kid.He was too thin for the part."They 〔the producers〕 did this double take, 'Oh my God, we are going to have to do something’, and I felt guilty," said Meiling.Aside from changes in looks, the gradual personality change of child stars is another big concern of audience and producers.Miley Cyrus began her career at 13 in Disney's hit TV series Hannah Montana. When Cyrus decided to show her adultpersonality by releasing "sexy" photos, people began to get uneasy about her.Reports said that furious Disney bosses were considering replacing Cyrus with a more clean-cut teen star.Cyrus finally kept her role after public apologies. But some parents banned their children watching the show."My daughter has been banned from watching the show," supermodel Cindy Crawford told Showbiz Spy."I really don't think Miley Cyrus is much of a role model for my kid."6.The underlined word "defy" in Paragraph 1 means "_____".A.challenge B.control C.clarify D.abandon 7.Which one is TRUE according to the passage?A.Actors always grow and change for the better.B.Daniel bothered by his change of appearance because _____.A.people think him sexy or coolB.people like short, little, nerdy guysC.he thinks he grows up to be handsomeD.some people do think such a boy as him is sexy9.What do audience and producers concern about?A.The actors' changes in appearances and gradual personality.B.The actors' weight.C.Whether the producers did the double take.D.Whether the actors are sexy or clean-cut.10.We can infer that _____ from the story of Miley Cyrus.A.Miley Cyrus decided to change her sexy adult personality later onB.Disney bosses prefer pure teen stars to sexy adults in their moviesC.parents prevented their children from watching her showD.Cindy Crawford is a supermodel, who has a daughterCAn idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit〔追求(zhuīqiú)〕to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched〔发起〕 the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor〔长〕 appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city.Across the US,stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem came up in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can beachieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.11.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A.To invite authors to guide readers.B.To involve people in community service.C.To encourage people to read and share.D.To promote the friendship between cities.12.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?A.They came from many different backgrounds.B.They were too busy to read a book.C.They had little interest in reading.D.They lacked support from the local government.13.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A.In large communities with little sense of unity.B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.14.The underlined words “shared a word〞 in Paragraph 5 probably mean .A.exchanged ideas with each other B.discussed the meaning of a wordC.gained life experience D.used the same language15.According to Nancy, the degree of students of the project is judged by .A.the careful selection of a proper bookB.the number of people who benefit from readingC.the growing popularity of the writersD.the number of books that each person readsDToday, the world is rapidly urbanizing. With half of the world population expected to live in cities by the early part of the 21st century, the Shanghai 2021 World Expo's focus on a better city bears profound meaning. What might future cities look like 28 years from now? Here are some scenarios: things to come, things to go.Zero wasteWaste disposal is one of the biggest headaches for cities.Apart from recyclable waste, everything is buried or incinerated, only to pollute the environment.Plastic waste remains underground forseveral decades. The world produces much more garbage that it can dispose of.Now at the Expo, all waste is delivered to a compression station where the waste is sorted, filtered, decontaminated, deodorized and compressed before finally being disposed of at designated spots. In Beijing, people living in the Asuwei area turn their household waste into organic fertilizers which are used to grow plants at residence communities. No more transportation problems during Spring FestivalThe Spring Festival, the most important Chinese holiday when everyone returns home, has caused headaches for millions of Chinese.More than 2 billion people travel at the same time, making obtaining travel tickets and the journey difficult. But in 28 years.Spring Festival travel may not be a problem at all.China plans to have more than 120,000 kilometers of railway and a rapid transportation network that will serve 90 percent of the population by 2021.And because most of China will be cities, people will not have to go to other places to find a job, so migration will no longer be so large-scale.Newspapers to disappearAmerican scholar Philip Meyer predicts that newspaper will come to an end in 2043.Utagawa Reizou, former editor-in-chief of The Mainichi Daily News.believes that the newspaper will be gone in 2030.This kind of prediction may worry those in print news business. In the U.K., the circulations of national newspapers aredeclining.Major Japanese newspapers have gone into debt.In the US, declining circulations and ad revenues have forced several newspapers to stop printing paperEditionsMedia tycoon Rupert Murdoch thinks the future of media relies on interaction through the Internet. In the future, digital newspapers will be sent to portal web terminals through wirelessly.Readers can discuss issues with journalists and editors.Information will move faster.Oil to run outIn August 2021, Fatih Birol, chief economist of theInternational Energy Agency, said that oil is running out faster than expected and that the world will likely feel the tightness in supply in the next five years.Scientists have found substitutes for oil as fuel, coal, natural gas, solar power, nuclear power and even water can replace oil as sources of energy.Flammable ice reserves alone can support humans for the next 1,000 years.16.By now, the world population in cities has grown to about_____.A.6.9 billion B.0.75 billionC.3.5 billion D.1.3 billion17.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Everything buried or incinerated, besides recyclable waste, pollutes the environment.B.People deal with their household waste in an environmental-friendly way in the Asuwei area, Beijing.C.More than 2 billion people suffer from headaches during the Spring Festival in China.D.By 2021, 90 percent of the population will have to go toother places to find a job.18.According to the American predictor Philip Meyer, what will happen in 2043?A.Newspaper will disappear.B.Japan has to stop printing newspaper.C.Digital newspaper will be sent to portal web terminals.D.Information will move faster.19._____ can replace oil as sources of energy in the future.A.Coal and natural gas B.Solar power and nuclear powerC.Water and flammable ice reserves D.All the above20.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.The Shanghai 2021 World Expo B.What will city life be like in 28 yearsC.A rapidly urbanizing world D.Things to come, things to goCBBAD ACDAB CADAB CBADB内容总结(1)2021届高三英语二轮专项训练:阅读理解〔49〕阅读以下短文,从每一小题所给的四个选项〔A、B、C和D〕中,选出最正确选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of communication—having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected. The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professional worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones? Signs of change in the issues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning (扫描) equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn’t remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer’s doctor didn’t agree. What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be veryuseful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says t hey are bad for your health. So for now, it’s wise not to use your mobile phone too often1. The writer’s purpose of writing this article is to advise peopleA. to buy mobile phonesB. to update regular phonesC. to use mobile phones less oftenD. to stop using mobile phonesBI've been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction〔差异〕and one practice that has helped my writing processes greatly. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrierto writing that most of us meet with. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to seize a fleeting(稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.The practice that can help you pass your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing〞. In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen. Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you've persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.Instead of staring at a blank screen start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.6. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work inparallel〞 (Line 4, Para. 1) in the writing process, he means ________.A. no one can be both creative and criticalB. they cannot be regarded as equally importantC. they are in constant conflict with each otherD. one cannot use them at the same time7. What prevents people from writing on is ________.A. putting their ideas in raw formB. attempting to edit as they writeC. ignoring grammatical soundnessD. trying to capture fleeting thoughts8. What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?A. To organize one's thoughts logically.B. To choose an appropriate topic.C. To get one's ideas down.D. To collect raw materials.9. One common concern of writers about “free writing〞 is that ________.A. it overstresses the role of the creative mindB. it takes too much time to edit afterwardsC. it may bring about too much criticismD. it does not help them to think clearly10. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. It introduces the author’s writing method.B. It tells us something about the creative mind.C. It highlights (强调) the importance of critical mind.D. It shows the difficulties to write on the fly.CA woman from Japan was telling a friend about her trip to the United States. The woman had visited major businesses and investment companies in New York Cityand Chicago.“I studied English before I left home,〞she said. “But I still was not surethat people were speaking English.〞Her problem is easy to understand. Americans in business are like people whoare in business anywhere. They have a language of their own. Some of the words andexpressions deal with the special areas of their work. Other expressions are borrowedfrom different kinds of work such as the theater and movie industry. One such saying is “get your act together〞.When things go wrong in a business, an employer may get angry. He may shout,“Stop making mistakes. Get your act together.〞Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, “Let us get our act together.〞 Either way, the meaning is the same. Getting your act together is getting organized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan of action. It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But, it is probable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps one of the actors was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. The director may have said, “Calm down, now. Get your act together.〞Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s. Mister Rogers says the Manchester Guardian newspaper used it in 1978. The newspaper said a reform policy required that the British government get its act together. Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a company meet. One company even called its yearly report, “Getting Our Act Together.〞The Japanese visitor was confused by another expression used by American business people. It is cut to the chase. She heard that expression when she attended an important meeting of one company. One official was giving a very long report. It was not very interesting. In fact, some people at the meeting were falling asleep. Finally, the president of the company said, “Cut to the chase.〞Cut to the chase means to stop spending so much time on details or unimportant material. Hurry and get to the good part.Naturally, this saying was started by people who make movies. Hollywood movie producers believe that most Americans want to see action movies. Many of their movies show scenes in which the actors chase each other in cars, or in airplanes or on foot.Cut is the director’s word for stop. The director means to stop filming, leave out some material, and get to the chase scene now.So, if your employer tells you to cut to the chase, be sure to get to the main point of your story quickly.11. After the woman visited the Untied States she might feel that __________.A. her English was poorB. It’s easy to master EnglishC. it’s difficult to make moneyD. people there weren’t very friendly12. In which situation could the words “get your act together〞 be used?A. A task is completed successfullyB. Players perform badly in a match.C. Audience is satisfied with the actor’s performance in a movie.D. Visitors make a tiresome and unpleasant trip to someplace.13. According the text, the expression “get one’s act together〞 __________.A. was first used by a Japanese business womanB. was forbidden to be used in the government policyC. originally came from a yearly report of a companyD. was commonly read by readers in a newspaper in 1978.14. What do the sayings “get your act together〞and “cut to the chase〞 have in common?A. Their usesB. Their meaningsC. their originsD. their popularities15. You’re in a department store and you see a couple of attractive young women looking at a sweater. You listen to their conversation:“I can’t believe it—a Lorenzo Bertolla! They are almost impossible to find. Isn’t it beautiful? And it’s a lot cheaper than the one Sara bought in Rome.”They leave and you go over to see this incredible sweater. It’s nice and the price is right. You’ve nev er heard of Lorenzo Bertolla, but those girls looked really stylish. They must know. So, you buy it. You never realize that those young women are employees of an advertising agency. They are actually paid to go from store to store, talking loudly about Lorenzo Bertolla clothes.Every day we notice what people are wearing, driving and eating. If the person looks cool, the product seems cool, too. This is the secret of undercover marketing. Companies from Ford to Nike are starting to use it.Undercover mark eting is important because it reaches people that don’t pay attention to traditional advertising. This is particularly true of the MTV generation—consumers between the age of 18 and 34. It is a golden group. They have a lot of money to spend, but they don’t trust ads. So advertising agencies hire young actors to “perform”in bars and other places where young adults go. Some people might call this practice deceptive (骗人的), but marketing executive Jonathan Ressler calls it creative. “Look at traditional adver tising. Its effectiveness is decreasing.”However, one might ask what exactly is “real” about of young women pretending to be enthusiastic about a sweater? Advertising executives would say it’s no less real than an ad. The difference is that you know an ad is trying to persuade you to buy something. You don’t know whena conversation you overhear is just a performance.1. The two attractive young women were talking so that they could______.A. get the sweater at a lower priceB. be heard by people aroundC. be admired by other shoppersD. decide on buying the sweater2. Lorenzo Bertolla is______.A. a very popular male singerB. an advertising agencyC. a clothing company in RomeD. the brand name of a sweater3. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. The two girls are in fact employed by the Lorenzo Bertolla Company.B. The MTV generation tends to be more easily influenced by ads.C. Traditional advertising is becoming less effective because it’s too direct.D. Undercover marketing will surely be banned soon by the government.4. 2012届高考英语二轮专题精品复习资料阅读理解(四十三)1Throughout the world, boys and girls prefer to play with different types of toys. Boys typically like to play with cars and trucks, while girls typically choose to play with dolls. Why is this? A traditional sociological explanation is that boys and girls are socialized and encouraged to play with different types of toys by their parents, peers, and the “society”. Growing scientific evidence suggests, however, that boys’ and girls’ toy preferences may have a biological origin. In 2002, Gerianne M. Alexander of Texas A&M University and Melissa Hines of City University in London surprised the scientific world by showing that monkeys showed the same sex typical toy preferences as humans. In the study, Alexander and Hines gave two masculine toys (a ball and a police car), two feminine toys (a soft doll and a cooking pot), and two neutral toys (a picture book and a stuffed dog) to 44 male and 44 female monkeys. They then assessed the monkeys’ preference for each toy by measuring how much time they spent with each. Their data showed that male monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the masculine toys, and the female monkeys showed significantly greater interest in the feminine toys. The two sexes did not differ in their preference for the neutral toys.If children’ s toy preferences were largely formed by gender socialization, as traditional sociologists’ claim, in which their parents give “gender appropriate” toys to boys and girls, how can these male and female monkeys have t he same preferences as boys and girls? They were never socialized by humans, and they had never seen these toys before in their lives.【文章大意概括】本文是科普阅读。
