Unit Two
Teaching goals
1.Words to revise: attractive, busy, dangerous, dirty, industrial, lively, modern, noisy, peaceful,
polluted, poor, smart, vast, wealthy

1)Beijing has a lot more inhabitants than Sydney and is much more crowded.

Writing a description comparing two places.
Moral ability goals
Making comparisons between developing countries and developed countries and arouse the Ss’s sense of responsibilities for our society, our country and the people living in the less developed countries.

Writing about comparisons between the towns or cities from the aspects of population, industry, climate, location, transport and tourism.
Teaching difficult points
Writing a description comparing two places, using words and sentence patterns learned in this unit.

Teaching procedures
Before class:
1.Ask the Ss to prepare a short presentation about Tianjin or Shenzhen using the words:
attractive, busy, dangerous, dirty, industrial, lively, modern, noisy, peaceful, polluted, poor, smart, vast, wealthy
2.Ask the Ss to collect information as much as possible about Tianjin or Shenzhen from the
aspects of population, industry, climate, location, transport and tourism.
While class:
Step One Revision:
Ask the Ss to present their work in class and make the necessary assessments by working together with the Ss.
Step Two Lead-in:
Check the homework and ask the Ss to take notes about Tianjin or Shenzhen from the
1. Work in pairs. Read this description comparing Shanghai with Guilin.. Try and guess the missing information.
Although Shanghai and Gulin are ________ cities, they are both very ________ and they are visited by a lot of tourists.
Shanghai is ________ while Guilin is situated in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of _______. Shanghai is a lively, ________ while Guilin is a small ________ in a beautiful mountainous region. The climate in both cities is warm and pleasant all year round but Guilin has more rain than Shanghai.
Shanghai has a much ________ than Guilin. It has nearly twenty million inhabitants while Guilin only has six hundred thousand. It is also a very crowded city with ________.
Guilin has fewer ________ than Shanghai. It is a beautiful historical city while Shanghai is a ________city. Guilin has a history of more than two thousand years while Shanghai started as a small fishing village in the eleventh century.

2. Discussion: How to write a description comparing two places.
Before writing:
Collect information as much as possible about the two places from the aspects of population, industry, climate, location, transport and tourism.
While writing:
1st Write a sentence to start your description about the two places saying what you know about them or what’s special about them.
2nd Write a description comparing two places as what has been done in Activity 1 and Activity 2. 3rd Organise your sentences into paragraphs. Each paragraph should discuss one particular feature. You may need to rewrite some of your sentences. You may follow the example in Step Three.
4th Write a sentence to finish your description and give your opinion about the two places.
After writing:
Check your composition form the aspects of content, grammar, spelling and so on.
Step Four Practice:
Activity 1. Work in groups of 4 and write sentences about Tianjin and Shenzhen, using the notes the they’ve already made .
Activity 2. Rewrite the sentences and compare Tianjin and Shenzhen, using the link words: but, however, although, while ,the sentence structures above in the teaching goals and the ways of
making comparisons mentioned above.
Step Five Homework:
1.Write a description comparing Tianjin and Shenzhen .
2.Ask one of your partners to correct your composition and rewrite your composition before
handing it in.
Part 2 教学反思
本节课是根据学生的学情—虽然在高一时写过类似文章,但是所写文章的词汇和句式比较单一和贫乏,为了帮助学生尽可能多地掌握介绍两个国家或城市的对比文章中常使用的好词和好句,使学生对如何写好介绍国家或城市的文章的能力,以及构思、点评和修改自己和他人文章的能力有不同程度的提高而进行的设计。
不足之处为学生收集资料的能力欠缺,今后应加强指导。
Part 3 专家点评
这是一节写作课,基本上完成了老师课前预设的教学目标。
学生能够通过分析自己家乡——天津和深圳的异同,学生学会如何将两个事物进行比较,从哪些方面比较两所城市。
同时完型填空的练习使学生对城市之间比较的相关词汇和短语进一步加深印象,从而为学生自己完成一篇城市间比较的文章做好铺垫。
在此基础上,教师鼓励学生多利用连词是文章连贯,这意味着学生的任务难度被提高了,激发了学生的学习兴趣,尤其是基础比较好的学校的学生。
